Faica Sparks In this scene, Mia was making a point that some of the privileges of being born white, female and affluent in this country provide you with a plethora of options, resources, support and access that you wouldn’t otherwise have and using that status to fuel a false sense of martyrdom is very destructive and invalid.

For me their turner point of their relationship started way earlier. I just understand that she never wanted a 4th child. And was so painful to watch bc for me it started since she knew she was pregnant or the flashback when she litteraly dropped her bc Izzy can't stop crying. She should do an abortion if really she didn't have any sort of love for her.
But I think that is more complex and that actually deep in her she loved Izzy the end of the scene when she kept this feather in the cage all this time was a metaphor of how despite she don't understand her she loves her.

Outside of that one scene, which people are just eating up, there was no nice guy behavior. He didn’t act like he owned Pearl. He didn’t act like he deserved her. He was a 15 year old boy with a crush and acted normally. He was actually interested in her as a person and her interests and hobbies and hung out with her before he even developed a crush; whereas Trip, only liked her when she got dolled up and after his brother said she was better than he could ever hope for. I think Amanda got that wrong.

I agree with you when you say Moody didn’t have a right to Pearl or Pearls body. However, if she really cared about Moody she would have told him the truth. Plus it was grimey of her to go after his brother knowing what position it would put Trip and Moody in. I think that’s why she decided to forgive her mother because she started to realize being honest isn’t always easy and she is/can be just as selfish as her mother. Also side note Young Mia was preyed on by EVERY adult in her life...predatory adults run RAMPANT in this series.

Savannah Sky I understand your point of view but also consider the fact that pearl probably hasn’t had too many crushes since she never really stayed in one place for too long. How would she know the cues that somebody liked her unless it was in the situation with trip and it was super obvious and also how would she have the social skills to tell Moody what was going on. I think that context is very important when looking at pearls decisions in the way that she acts throughout the show.

I honestly never understood why nobody could seem to understand why she left her child at the fire station, but low key there probably was a better way of going about that. Shady Saint exactly. I couldn’t agree with Bebe at all through the whole thing. We learnt why that couple were fighting for that child so much and what they went through. If you can’t get pregnant it’s hard and takes a toll and the fact she didn’t break after so many attempts I credit her. Once you leave your child and relinquish your rights even for a good reason. It’s not your child anymore until they choose to later in life find you or if she went about it in a better way she could have at least visited her often and still been in her life the right way. She blew it all out instead of talking to the family. Like the screaming at the child’s birthday? The embarrassment the family must have felt when all of their friends and family after their million attempts the child’s birth mother runs in acting like you snatched the baby from her hands??? I could not agree with her. There is a lot of things that I seem to be the opposite of the popular opinion but whatever 🤷🏽‍♀️

I gotta defend Moody a little bit here. First let me say that Pearl absolutely did not owe him anything and the "nice guy" stuff is TRASH. However...
Pearl and Trip were still in the wrong for not telling him, knowing that it would hurt his feelings. Moody definitely reacted very badly (which is why I'm glad Izzy called him out on that) *BUT* Trip and Pearl were being pretty terrible to him. Moody was Pearl's first friend and he was a great friend, so she should have been honest and upfront with him. And Trip is a terrible brother for not even considering his brothers feelings about it. Teenagers are so inept on the concept of cause and effect. I feel like anyone would be mad in Moody's situation.
Also, he didn't call Pearl a slut. He called the "Jens" that Trip previously messed with sluts, which is not much better.

I feel the same way! And plus they were fucking in his damn hideout! It was just really messy and unnecessary when they could have just been honest with one another. If she could have all those heart to hearts with Trip, she could have had a sit down with Moody if they were really friends. I mean the boy was your very first friend man, why ya have to do him like that? I'm not she owes him his body but a communication doesn't hurt. Then it would be up to Moody if he decided to grow with that info or turn into a true incel.

Then big heart to heart ensues and it would be up to Moody to act like a jealous lunatic or have a serious talk with his brother about his little superiority complex.

some of my thoughts (even though i’m not anyone special lol)
-the show was good but i feel like it made mia and elena into caricatures of people. in the book they were super complex characters, and you could see both perspectives. in this mia was selfish, and elena was just straight EVIL
-lexie didn’t do a lot of that racist shit in the book
(unfortunately she did put pearl’s name down which sucked ASS), and i was happy to see it give good commentary, but like the writers could’ve given her a LITTLE depth, you know? i was so done with her bullshit the whole time
-also the way they changed her relationship to the professor was a bit disturbing. in the book she had a girlfriend and was a mother figure to mia but in the show she, a woman with a clear power dynamic over this teenager, gives her drugs and dates her like ??
-mia in the book was basically asexual, and she had never had sex, but in this she’s literally fucking the boss while bebe’s having a crisis like omg
-sorry to keep referencing the book but moody was so much more likable in that! he was genuinely caring and he played guitar and wrote music, but watching this i was just like 0.0 “boy, chill tf out”
-and OMG didn’t april give her the cabbage patch dolls??
-the thing that just really made me mad about the custody battle was just that in the book it was really understandable to help bebe because she had been searching for may ling and found a pro bono lawyer, but in this she had conceded and was trying to move on, and mia called her to the house she was in so she could have a breakdown that would make her look crazy, and then paid for the lawyer just to justify to herself that she was right in taking pearl (which i understand but like....)
-i felt for linda AND bebe, but who i really felt for was may ling. it was really such an impossible situation because there was the issue of culture, but there was also the fact that she’d been raised for almost a year by mark and linda and even was calling linda mama. like may ling is going to be hurt in both situations, just in different ways
-the weird cop out of the adoptive father saying not to go check on may ling was so odd. in the book may ling didn’t even cry, which hurt linda even more because may ling was still super comfortable with bebe
-the pick up sequence was definitely a dream because she woke up on the bus
also love you queen, you always make such well thought out points

I agree with absolutely everything you said in this video and I thought the way the show handled all these sensitive topics was phenomenal. However, the only thing I disagree with you on is your stance on the character of April. As a gay man, growing up in the closet is very difficult, trying to mask your feelings and hide who you truly are becomes second nature to us and when we feel like all our secrets are about to be exposed we do things we have to to survive. While the way April treated Izzy was atrocious, as a 15 year old girl growing up in the 90’s scared about being outed, I can only empathise with her. She may seem like a coward but I feel like at that stage of her life and seeing how brave and strong Izzy was, I reckon she was just extremely confused and scared to be shunned by her friends and family for something as primal as loving somebody. I agree that her character handled the situation wrong but I have to empathise with her feeling trapped. I love your channel btw :)

I think moody had never really had a real love interest before so maybe he didn’t know how to treat pearl or convey emotions he had never felt before fr. He said those offensive remarks out of anger and I think he kind of did get to know pearl bc they were hanging out everyday he knew about her writing and tried to do nice things for her. He probably called her that bc Pearl lead moody on and wanted Trip instead but moody knows the type of girls Trip gets with and usually they probably are “easy” so I felt like pearl was in the wrong for lying to moody and leading him on by basically inviting him over and being under moody 24/7 then cutting him off. If someone had a crush and y’all hung out everyday and y’all flirted and was sweet back and forth and they get with your best friend how u gone feel? Mad af that’s how.

The thing is it's two-fold Moody isn't owned Pearl just because he had feelings for her or at all but Moody and his feeling for Pearl didn't come out of left field weren't completely unfounded(at least based on the info he had) it's not like Moody had no reason to think Pearl had no romantic feelings towards him when they spent presumably everyday for like months together like the rest of that summer. Daily talking and like getting to know each other and like they smoked weed and were holding hands staring into each other's eyes it did seem like Pearl had some feelings towards Moody( The secret spot before they got caught, homecoming) until she saw Tripp and wanted to have the quintessential High School experience she started to drift away from him to his other siblings. Even when you first hear her response to her mother after she had sex with Trip it wasn't like she fell head over heels she just assumed it would be easy to have sex with Trip she made it quite clear to both her mother and Trip that she knew that he had other sexual encounters that everyones knew about about the Jens. Moody's response to her was foul but he doesn't have the audiences perspective from his perspective Pearl got with Trip with Trip using the same methods he told Moody to use on Pearl which was to neg her. Most the scenes that showed Pearl being into Trip happened when Moody wasnt around like the you can watch tv and wait for Moody or the math class stuff. When they started actually dating they did it in secret from him specially since Mia knew and they had no reason to think they had to hid it from the Richardsons. How Moody reacted was awful and what Izzy said was right but based on what Moody knew, the girl he liked and thought liked him back got with his brother that knew he liked her by being awful and negging her ( he didnt Pearl initiated it and Trip seems to genuinely like her but Moody was specifically excluded from knowing that information )then they lied about it for a least a couple months and met up in the private place he showed her. He had a right to be mad but like 15% Pearl and 85% Trip.

I get what you mean but she didn’t flirt with him or lead him on in any way at all. If he didn’t have a crush on her you would think their relationship was completely platonic. His behaviour stemmed from the mindset that “because I like you and I’m nice to you, you should like me” which is very toxic and misogynistic. Treating pearl with respect and getting to genuinely know her is standard behaviour. Therefore he had no right to expect her love and affection in return. Plus she lied because who she’s sleeping with is none of his business especially when she’s always liked his brother and had every right to act on it. She lied to spare his feelings, which I wouldn’t necessarily advise but I understand

I'm commenting as a watch lol as much as elena needed to mind her business so did mia. Mia shouldn't have told bebe about her daughter in the manner she should, especially since she was only doing it do basically justify HER own actions (taking Pearl).. because she had only known bebe for a few months so the whole "she's a good mother" (bc like how does she really know that truly) thing had no weight imo. Edited: I see you discussed it lol but i disagree with the idea they only lost the case bc of the system, as much as Linda may have been ignorant to the child's culture, Bebe ABANDONED her daughter and left her outside as an infant and almost died from frostbite, she would have never won.

    • @vee6163
      @vee6163 4 роки тому +34

Totally agree. Is Linda ignorant? Yes. But she can learn with time, especially now that she got called out. By the end of the day, her and Mark can give May a much better life than BeBe. I mean, wasn't this the reason why she left her child at the firehouse in the first place? So she wouldn't die due her poor conditions? But now that May has finally found a family, she thinks she's in the right to just take her back? BeBe's life conditions are slightly better now, but in no way she can fully provide for her child with her poor income and the threat of being deported at any moment due still being an illegal immigrant in the country. Mia was extremely selfish to instigate such idea to BeBe which will now surely lead to her downfall.

      @jadedcornea7460 4 роки тому +14

I have so much resentment to Mia for alot of things like lying to a family that their child died etc, the Bebe situation was the height of it. That's why I understood Elena's revenge telling Pearl her secret. It made Mia feel the pain others were feeling and yes I know two wrongs don't make a right but Mia got served. I also expected Bebe to lose the case BECAUSE SHE ABANDONED HER CHILD, THAT CANNOT BE TOLERATED. If she had come for a plea for visitation rights, that I would have been happy about but MIA was just so MISLEADING. It's why I'm always so careful about letting people talk me into things everybody has where they are coming from in their own right that doesn't align with your situation.

Ayodele Bello I’m sympathetic to Bebe more than the couple that could’ve bought any other kid they wanted out of their plight. Like the show said you can’t really make good choices if you never had them in the first place, and when you’re treated as subhuman in a new country where you have nothing to your name and nothing but your child, I’m curious to see what people who have all this smoke would’ve done if they genuinely loved their child and had to leave them somewhere else so they could survive. I don’t blame her for wanting her child back or giving her away so she could survive. Both sides should’ve been empathetic to each other and granted Bebe visitation rights.

Couldnt agree more. The baby would have died. There should have been gratitude for having sheltered the baby and looking after it! I wanted the baby to not be with bebe. I was sad that she stole her baby back that's not justice!... And it is "not because of the system"! It's because sometimes a wealthy family comes with privileges that are worth more than just th romantic notion of "mother's love". Because everyone screws up thier child. But it's better to not be literally dying of hunger and being screwed up as well.

Also, I feel like her husband is going to divorce her, and he will most likely take everything. But he’ll also probably have to support Elena because I’m pretty sure he makes more as a lawyer. But he isn’t a good parent either he’s absent and at work a lot and what he said to Izzy was really backwards, because he ignore how she’s treated. Micheal (I’m not calling him moody) needs help and so does Lexi. (Who’s clearly the favorite) Tripp is the middle child so of course he’s ignored, he needs help too before he catches something.

I feel like the "Pearl didn't owe Moody anything" line is a strawman. If anybody told me in person the they felt someone owed them a relationship I'd be certain they were having a breakdown. No one is saying she owed him. But that's just completely letting Pearl off the hook for sleeping with his brother at his secret spot and Trip off the hook for sleeping with a girl he knew damn well his brother liked.
Moody has every right to be upset. Just because someone doesn't owe you a relationship doesn't take away from your right to be heartbroken because that is tough. And that's your big brother and your special place which will no longer have the meaning it once had to him. People are completely projecting modern feminist ideas onto this kid and he's only 15 and has zero idea of how the word or relationships actually work.

I noticed that the “pacifier” scene was a good one. That’s when I realized that Elena regretted not staying with Jaime in Paris. That’s also when I realized that she hated her life but was pretending it was perfect. I loved how Jaime read her the second time she tried to reconnect with him. And I love how Bill read her at the end when he said “I need to go get a pacifier this time” when he left the house right before the children confronted Elena on her bs after she completely drone Izzy to leave with her disrespect. The part that made me sad the most about Izzy’s and Elena’s relationship was when Elena cut Izzy out of the Christmas photos and Izzy found them in the trash. The way Mia handled Pearl was insane. I just can’t with Mia’s unstable lifestyle. Brian wasn’t sooo bad. When he really saw how Lexie was toward Pearl, he eventually stood up. I hated Lexie and Moody and Elena. Period.

The reason that I have a problem with Pearl, is because she became the stereotypical black girl who hung out with to many white people and then starts treating her mom with disrespect. I know not all white kids do that and I know not all black moms would beat their child because of it but I don’t like how she was like yelling her mom and feeding into Alanas bs. When I watched the commercial for this before it came out I got the impression that Izzy wanted to be Mia’s child and Pearl wanted to be with Alana. The show definitely gave me those vibes. Another thing I hate is Kerry Washington’s facial expressions 😂 this is my first time seeing her in anything so I was so confused also I hated Reece Witherspoons character in this which I guess means she did a damn good job. Also I do think the part with Izzy at the end was a dream at first I was so excited I was like OOOH SHIIIIIIIT ROADTRIP! But then when she woke up I was like dang. All kids were really good actors and I thought it was sweet how they all got upset not only when they found out pearl and Mia were gone but when Alana told Izzy she never wanted her. Even Lexi knew when to draw the line and that girl is a mess. Speaking of that when Alana screamed at her saying she was perfect it just showed how much she was living through her. Overall a good show I definitely wanna check out the book even though I should have read it first 😂

But at the same time this is most the fault of Lexie, she's the embody of the white privileged girl that use her power to steal work of the disvantaged's ones. She shouldn't stole Pearl's essay. Yet, she did it. Why ? Bc she reproduced the same behavior of her mother. She internalized racism bc she heard her parents said it. Remember the discussion they had in a dinner table when they asked why she should doing an essay bc they pay Yale.
So why just also blaming Pearl ?
I agree with you the series really stresses on the embody of how black girls got manipulated and alienated by white women and they became the followers, but also stressed on the dynamic of power in races espicieally when it comes to black women and white women. IRL a lot of black women experienced that.
