Emma XTC yup. even if they were released from big cat rescue or joe/doc’s zoos they would not be able to return to the wild because a lot of them were born in captivity. they would be in cages their whole lives no matter if they are released or not. and i agree, while those girls were definitely brainwashed, they still have the cognitive ability to one day realize “hey this is really fucked up and i should probably leave” just like that one girl did. the tigers don’t have that choice. even if they broke out they’d be shot and killed or tranquilized and sent back to a facility. they have no control over anything that is happening to them.
There were a lot of terrible Twitter hot takes on Tiger King but the absolute worst one I saw were people who were complaining about "bi-erasure" when they were talking about the LITERAL grooming and manipulation Joe was exerting over these poor struggling 19 year old boys. He did groom them and it was the absolute worst thing, but the documentary really did have a problem with pretending certain things like being trans (Saff) and bi didn't exist. They should have just focused on Joe's terrible behavior rather than saying the boys were for sure straight because it didn't make sense as to why that was one of the main points against the relationship.

Doc Antle's compound was actually raided by the FBI in either September or October of last year. I'm unsure if they have filed charges against him. But for real, everyone in this deserves to be in jail.
John Cooper I read it was raided because some of his tigers were descendants of some illegally bred tigers from another zoo or something. It had nothing to do with anything mentioned in the documentary, plus nothing came of it.

Honestly I think it's pretty hard to rehabilitate and prepare these animals to go out in the wild. It's one thing to kill a cow or human which are animals that aren't meant to survive "outside civilization", it's another to kill gazelles in the jungle. All these tigers born in captivity are habituated to humans too, so you just know they're going to sniff out some human's scent in the forest and follow them into their village in India to see if they'll give them some steak like their old zoo-keepers did and get confused when the villagers freak out and then decide to go after the easy food sources like cows and sheep. That's if they're lucky. If they're unlucky they'll literally walk up to a poacher baiting them with food. They also won't respect the other wild tigers territories because they grew up in enclosures with a bunch of other tigers and think that's normal and the wild tigers will kill them just as surely as coyotes can kill dogs because wild-born animals have better killing instincts.

I agree with Oliver, they really just include these clips for shock value rather than making a real point. Something that the true crime genre often has issues with disrespecting those who have died for entertainment sake. elizabeth w. Pretty accurate. I know several classmates (vet students) who did rotations there or who volunteered there. They (along with many conservation biologists) have nothing but positive things to say about the rescue itself (not many had a lot of interaction w Carole herself).

Devil's advocate here but maybe the documentary crew just asked for everyone's birth names and rolled with it, and Saff probably wasn't explicit in saying that he identifies as a man so maybe there was miscommunication there.

edit to add: Joe is a paranoid manipulator who preys on the young and vunderable, Jeff Lowe is a massive con artist, Doc Antle is straight up a cult leader who euthanizes endangered tiger cubs, and Carole definitely was involved in the disappearance of her husband. The only valid people were Saff, who genuinely seemed to just care about the animals, and Travis who was clearly preyed upon and intentionally turned into an addict when he was too young to see what was going to happen to him.
It made me sick to my stomach seeing hundreds of tigers being held in captivity like that.
