So many people downplay Katara's abilities. They said the same thing about her and Azula, as if she did not win against her in the final episodes. The Katara slander is childish honestly.

All those times he fought her he was using his fire for the wrong purpose. When he stopped chasing the avatar and went to the dragons with aang he started using his fire for right purpose; taken down his dad. That's why he beat azula who always used to kick his ass. If zuko and katara fought again post-dragon meeting I feel like he would win or last more than a few seconds lol.

Aang was the moral compass but at the same time, he is carefree, aloof, not confrontational, and prefer to avoid problems.
Sokka was the tactician and the leader. He is smart and funny but sometimes lacked a bit of empathy for others.
Toph was the badass of the group, she's not scared of anyone but also reckless and a little selfish.
Katara is the mother figure of the team. She cares deeply for not only the team but also others. But she can be too trusting and overbearing.
In the show, every main character have their own personality strengths and weaknesses. Their personalities complimented each other while sometime also clashed with each other. But there is one thing they have in common.
*they are CHILDREN*
So of course they made mistakes and say/do things that they shouln't have said/done.

Yeah I actually really like how the show has every single one of the characters having their bad moments, too many shows have their hero figure, or their villain figure, or any of the figures as very one-sided and it's kind of boring. I like how Aang has his selfish, childish, even ignorant moments. It adds a lot to the show.

Exactly, it's because he's such a well written character in a show with as well written characters that he's overshadowed a lot of the times. He fulfills his role but the other characters are allowed more room to be more because of their different roles they play in the narrative.
Another reason why the movie which shall not be named was so bad, they completely changed his character into a bland one-dimensional guy. Like I know he’s 112, but he didn’t have to act like he was 112.
Sokka mastered all four nations non-bending styles too! He learning how Kyoshi Warriors fight in the fire nation, invented the war balloon in the air nation, had his boomerang from the water nation, and his sword from the fire nation:D

When Katara helped Aang out of the Avatar state I KNEW Kataang was the best ship 🥺
Katara was literally the only one that holding the team together at the desert.
• Toph, at the time, cant see clearly on the sand and felt guilty because she "let" Appa to be taken away by the sandbenders.
• Aang was enraged from loosing Appa which caused him to not think straight. He even broke his own code and teaching to not kill (he killed one of the giant bird wasp creatures)
• Sokka was high from cactus juice .

I've always admired Katara, I see myself in her to this day. Aside from the badass bending, can we acknowledge the fact she took on her mother's role almost instantly?! Villiage leader, "wife" and "mother" to her OLDER brother? All while coping with the trauma of knowing her mom sacrificed herself for her. A ✨SAINT✨!

Avatar the last air bender has great world building, lore, character interactions, and educates it’s audience on war, genocide, and the effects of warfare. I love how each character grew. I enjoyed Suki beating the sexist out of Sokka and making his character grow to see women are more than what society expects of us. Sokka is funny but my boy has a brain yet he be getting the hits from benders. I loved how he learned different non-bending elements from the earth, water, and fire nation plus he got the tactic strategies down even Azula recognised the skills. I enjoyed the theme of Toph being a prodigy but being denied acclaim because she was blind. Her strength came from others doubting her abilities due to her disability and showed us how persistent, tough, and elastic she could be. Toph’s disability wasn’t her weakness but in reality her greatest strength with Semitic sense and how it related to the original earth benders. I love Katara not just for her strength but for being mature at such a young age and always standing up for others. Much like Toph she was a prodigy unrecognised because of her lack of resources ( being the only water bender in the southern water tribe) and because in the northern tribe for being a woman (refusing to just learn healing and standing up to sexism) which allows females to learn fighting water bending. Suki deserves more love and should receive just as much attention as the main cast. Avatar Kyoshi would be proud of Suki and her leadership skills. Zuko is the definition of redemption and true honour. Zuko seeking paternal acceptance from his father and Azula seeking maternal acceptance (physically) from
Ursa shows how royalty really divides a family. Although, Iroh was a rescue parent for Zuko , but Azula had no one to save her. His family is like yin and yang. Azula was a terrific villain with a complicated past. Iroh tales of Ba Sing Sae breaks me every time. Aang childish and mature when necessary a child who has lost everything but must learn to save the world. Aang has flaws but I appreciate him for growing as the show and comic went on.
Overall, a good show lol.

Thank you for speaking on Sokka. He's Soooo Underrated. Watching this show as a kid I remember being soooo annoyed with Sokka all the time because he was always trying to kill the fun. But then watching again as an adult I realized that if it weren't for him, their lil asses would've been dead FIRST MISSION/ADVENTURE. They would've either gotten captured, gotten lost, or died of starvation. Sokka kept all their asses alive and I need him to get the credit he deserves.

As much as I dislike Azula, I have to say, her character is soooo well orchestrated.

The episode where she's at a party having a hard time communicating with people and the final episode where there's a fight between her and Katara where she breaks down and start bawling like- shows she's not JUST a villain for the sake of being a villain. She really needs help. Her father's influence and mother's absence are APPARENT. ATLA was so well thought out. Perfection.

Two things I love about Azula's psychology
1) She believes, deep down, that she is a monster. This was internalized by her relationship with her mother
2) She projects this onto everyone around her so she can confirm this belief about herself, which is why she says that fear is better than love. And the way these two things work over the series to slowly lead to her breakdown was BEAUTIFUL
Yesss she's a good villain character, very likeable in that sense. Obviously you can like a villain, and root or justify their actions.
The female representation in this show and Legend of Korra is SOO good!! One of the best among children’s shows, and I love it!

Azula's and Zuko's mother was pretty distant from Azula because she was probably too depressed to try harder to reach through to her. Azula already favored their father and his values by the time they showed her interaction with her mother, so her mother probably didn't have the mental strength to try anymore, especially when you read the comics and see Ozai was abusive to her too.

I like how different Zuko and Azula are. They’re two kids who are around the same age, have faced ab*se by the same person, and have both been abandoned by the same person. Zuko and Azula show how everyone reacts to certain situations the differently.
I think the main difference is that Zuko was desperate for his father's affection but had unconditional love from Iroh while Azula never really had anybody
It actually paints a realistic picture of abused victims: one breaks free from the abuse (Zuko) while the other one becomes the abuser (Azula).Edit: the mom did not abandon her children. For a show that people love to be analytical about, it’s interesting how some fans miss the part where she was banished.

If someone tries to kill you or mistreats you, then, of course, you’re not going to want to do anything with that person. That’s realistic. Her having everyone at the end because people feel sorry for her is not realistic.
@@k.d3983 and on top of that, we could go all nature vs nurture in that Zuko is introverted and sensitive, so would be drawn to their mother’s sweeter nature, while Azula is more extroverted and had an analytical personality, so as a child she saw two very different people with very different value systems at odds, and one was a loser and the other a winner. To her, Ozai is the winner, so she was drawn to his nature.
Eeehhh yes and no. Their reactions are linked. They display typical sibling dynamics that form in abusive and traumatic environments. In an effort to save themselves from abuse, they choose the side of the abuser and do whatever they can to not be the focus of the abuse. She was deemed the favorite early on because of her skills at firebending. And that position means not being abused a certain way, and therefore worth obtaining and maintaining.

Azula's mom never thought Azula was a monster, she was concerned for her since she tried to emulate her evil ass father but Azula thinks her mom hated her because thats what Ozai made her believe. The poor mom was forced to leave after doing Ozai's dirty work (we find this out in the comics).

You don't even need the comics. It's strongly implied what happened in the show through Zuko's flashbacks. Ozai pisses off his father (Zuko's grandfather) by suggesting he become next in line for the throne instead of Iroh (who was having an emotional breakdown because of his son's death during war) which is a huge issue. Grandfather then says Ozai should lose a son to see how it feels. Azula wakes Zuko up telling him their dad is going to kill him. Next thing we know Grandfather is dead, Ozai is Fire Lord (which we know isn't what Grandfather wanted) and Mom leaves Zuko in the night saying she did what she did for him and loves him. It's easy to put together, but maybe after having seen it a few times. But you def don't need to comics to know what happened they just expand on it.

Zuko is about 16 during the show, and whilst not initially the strongest bender in the family, but later in life, he manages to produce that colourful dragon fire, and is the first firebender to do so. Ozai only married their mother Ursa because it was prophesized their children would be extremely powerful, Zuko was simply a late bloomer.
I feel so bad for Azula. She's evil but she really had no chance. By the time Ursa left, Ozai had his claws in her so deep, she wouldn't have listened to reason. Ozai broke that child's psyche.
I wouldn't say she was evil, Ozai had his grasp tight onto her, she really did not have time to develop her own personality.

Azula is a great villain because she was intelligent, but not only did she have brains but had skills in acrobatics, defence, and offence. When Azula broke the mirror in the finale talking to her mother that hurt me. Ursa loved both Azula and Zuko but I feel her not receiving her mother’s affection physically destroyed her. Because it’s important for a mother and daughter to have a relationship especially during your daughters adolescent years. So, when her mom said , “No, Azula I love you.” Those words were powerful because Azula knew all of this to be true and deep down if Ozai didn’t encourage her behaviour because of her natural talent things might have been different. Let’s be real Ozai didn’t love Azula or Zuko he only wanted them to be his pawns. He loved Azula’s brains, talent, and charisma and hated Zuko for being human and flawed. Ozai was a man of little words and big on being the best. I guess he was always trying to get out of Iroh’s shadow and be better than Azulon and Sozin.

I always look at like,, people's clothing in tv shows, and Aang is very interesting to me. so in book one Aang was wearing full airbender garb with his glider. by the beginning of book 3 he no longer has his pants and his glider and had to wear the airbender shirt with firebender pants. when he fought ozai his shirt was in shambles and ripped away completely. in the last episode he is wearing a WHOLE different outfit like mans really lost everything from his heritage
I agree with you up until the final outfit, which actually looks just like the robes monk Gyatso used to wear at the Air Temple. The robes he wears at Zuko’s coronation are a replica of what the masters at the Temple wore, down to the necklace with the air nomad symbol on it. It took me a few watches to realize but it’s a really nice touch. He sticks to his culture in the end, just like he refused to kill Ozai and allow the genocide of his people to be complete (because if he gave up their teachings to intentionally murder someone it would have completed his people’s cultural genocide, etc. etc.). That story arc is one of my favorite things about Aang.
I think the reason why aang is considered the best bender isnt bc he’s the avatar but the fact that this kid mastered all four elements which takes years normally, within months and beat the firelord. A whole Kind that was even able to fight a few months back.

If Zhao had found the avatar in the first episode, you bet he'd have destroyed the village where Zuko left them alone. also, you had Iroh, who you immediately loved and since him and Zuko are a pair then what's good for Zuko is good for Iroh.

Plus Katara is one of the most powerful character on the show along with toph and aang. She heated zuko, Azula, Mai, ty lee, hama, pirates, and more like she even went toe to toe with Pakku and she didn’t have any training season one .
What i love about this show is the LEVEL of emotional investment it inspires. EVERY reactor is always entirely neutral and then ends absolutely RAVING in the best way and understands why so many people demand reactions to this show. One of the best pieces of media of the century.

people don’t give aang enough credit. he was an incredible master bender at the age of 12/13 and was the first avatar to energy bend. he was an amazing avatar and yet was still able to follow his air nomad philosophy and culture even though they conflicted with each other many times.
I think Zuko could've taken Azula during the finale, not bc he's a better bender, but by she was slowly losing it, her hard exterior was cracking and she was getting sloppy. Had she not targeted katara in the last second I do believe Zuko would've redirected anything she'd throw at him and eventually win especially since he'd learned the ancient firebending technique in a prior episode

Yessss. One of the big reasons Zuko’s redemption works is because he had everything to lose and made the choice to do the right thing with victory was in hand, and that he wasn’t immediately accepted. He had to claw his way.

Zuko was a very good firebender (he was 15/16 and defeated Admiral Zhao in an agni kai), he learned directly from Iroh and the dragons and even taught the Avatar. But he was the weakest in the fire nation royal family. He wasn't naturally gifted, but he really put effort into learning (which is the whole point of his character, that he struggles and fights for what he wants)

Fun fact: Zuko was about to be killed for talking back in the meeting (where he got the scar)...To save his life she gave Ozai (the dad) a concoction that would kill the grandfather so he could take the throne and the condition for keeping Zuko alive was that she had to leave forever.
