I'm very happy to hear that 😊😊 And yes, I think knitting is sometimes explained overly complicated, when the underlying principles are actually so easy.

Norman, you have such a great way of explaining and showing techniques that make it so much easier to learn! You're a natural teacher! Do you recognize what a positive impact you have on the lives of so many people? Without your help, many of us would be stumbling in the dark with no idea what to do but, with your help and demonstrations, we have a clearly illuminated path to follow. Thank you so much for this. I really like the long tail cast on knit and purl alternating mathod. I never heard of the term "long tail cost on purl wise" before. This was so helpful. I now use that cast on for two color brioche too. I like it a lot more than the italian cast one. It's more sturdy and I love the look.
Thank you for the very clear, informative video on casting on with two colors! The best I've seen. I really like that you showed four ways, so I can choose the one needed for any particular project.😊 Happy viewer..
This was so helpful! And thanks for your suggestion to slow the video down to follow along better. I'm not used to slowing videos down, and I don't think I would have thought to do that, haha.
Great tip-read the chart first and make sure you pick up on the implications for double-knitting. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve jumped in and then got stumped by some twist in the pattern chart! I really wish there was some standardization for double-knitting charts!
I just recently discovered your channel, and I love it! I’m a fairly experienced knitter, but I’ve been watching videos of things I know how to do, because I keep learning some little tip or trick that no one told me about before ❤ I do want to add that I “invisibly” cast on for double knitting by doing a 2-color Magic Cast on and then sliding the stitches onto a single needle. It’s a little tedious, but the invisible way you showed is too fiddly for me, so I had to come up with something that didn’t get messed up on my needles😂
Norman, I am working on a stuffed animal; my first; and without this video I would have been stuck!! Thank you so much for the detailed and clear explanations in your tutorials, it is truly appreciated!!
Thank you, Norman. This was just what I needed. Perfectly clear instructions and demonstration. I chose the second long-tail cast on for a firmer edge since I'm double knitting a bookscarf which I don't want to flare out at the bottom.
I absolutely love your channel! I've recently started knitting again. I learned from UA-cam after my daughter was born cause I was getting tired of crocheting things. I wanted to learn something new. So I'm so glad I found your channel I've learned so many different techniques from you! Thank you so much! Keep up the great work you do!!!
Been trying to get this cast on thing happening for double knitting.. something new to learn.. but the crochet chain cast on is a nightmare! Going to try option 2, … wish me luck 😊
Thank you for making this! I had no idea there were so many methods which explains how there is so much variation in videos. You explained it all so well and it has really helped with my project
I made a lovely double knitted blanket over 40 years ago. I learned from a much older lady at my church. Now, I’m wanting to make another blanket and for the life of me I’m at a loss as to how I did it so simply back then. You, as always have given me the information I need. ❤
You always save me. I was struggling with the first cast on you showed. Then you said it wasnt that great for a scarf...which is what im making. Thank you!! The second one is so much easier! Do you have a suggestion for a matching bind off?
no video about that yet, sorry. I guess I should record one. I didn't back then because the video wasn't very sucessful an initially only got a couple of hundred views and I was like: hm..doesn't seem anyone is interested >.
Kia ora from New Zealand, Norman! Your videos are amazing! I could only knit a very basic scarf, but after watching your videos I am working on a double-knit scarf with colour-changes. I have started with the two-coloured edge that you show at 9 mins, but now I need to know, please, how to cast off, so that I have the same kind of edge at the end?
well...that will depend on whhich cast-on you picked, right ;-) here is a tutorial for the invisible bind-off nimble-needles.com/stitches/invisible-bind-off-for-double-knitting/
do yourself a favor and knit the first couple of rounds flat, then join in the round and bridge the gap by grafting a stitch or two ;-) That does the trick for me..otherwise it's, as you say, veeery fiddly.
Not sure what the join would look like in the round with this "graft" idea. The double knit pattern I am trying to do doesn't have a clear and efficient cast on technic. I'd love to see a video showing a 2 color double knitting cast on in the round for a reversible cowl project. Your video lessons are excellent!
I used your second cast on for my double knit project and loved the result and the easy way you described it. Why do other instructors make it sound so hard? Thank you!
That I cannot answer. Though when you don't truly understand the mechanics behind a technique teaching boils down to repetition instead of educating and that often can become confusing pretty fast. Either way, happy to hear I was able to help you with your project 😊🥰
Norman, your videos are so helpful. I have been using your second method for double-knitting scarfed as I learn to knit, but I have been unable to find a bind off that will match that. I would love to know if you have a video for that as well; I haven't found it if you do. Thank you so much for being so patient and clear in your instructions!!
Hey! This video was great, I came searching for a cast on that wouldn't make my scarf flare (I'm on my 3rd double knit scarf,1 pattern repeat left). I used your version 2, perfect! But I feel my Kitchener grafting also gives flare. Would you make a double knitting cast OFF video too???
Love this! Now, what if I needed to add a third color (say on your example piece from the intro, i wanted a smaller black diamond inside the bigger diamond)? How would I do that?
13:18 Hi! I thought I could use the easy alternative to add the second layer after creating a rib of the main colour - however, don’t the stitches for the initial colour get halved in number this way? If we alternate the existing ones, to knit the first colour then the second colour? What would be the best technique for what I aim to do? Thanks! So put it differently, if I have 20 stitches of my initial colour, work a rib of several cms with them, then want to double the work, I would have to end up with 40 total stitches on my needles, right?
I'm making seamans 1898 hat. I'd like to make the cap PART reversible. That part starts by picking up the stitches of the cuff. How do I do that in 2 colors? Would SO appreciate your help!!
Hi, in the 1st method showed (the one that's similar to italian cast on) the edges stay open? Should I make a long tail cast on with both strands together at the end for closing the edge? Thank you
For knitting the invisible cast on in the round, do you need to double-knit back across the cast on stitches first? When I tried to slide them across the needles they all seemed to fall apart.
1st caston: Knit stitches in R1 will be mounted correctly if you do stitch 2 of the caston in a purl-type motion. (Go behind *both* yarns, not just one, and pull through as a purl stitch.)
yeah, there are many other ways to knit this. But since knitting through the back loop is just so simple, I personally never really saw a need to make things complicated. But happy to hear it seems to work well for you!
Hi Norman! I have a quick question, do I have to reposition the yarn for each color switch? I'm a continental knitter and my pattern calls for a color switch every single pair of stitches over 46 stitches for multiple rows! Would it be possible to just do color switches by picking up the correct color and not having to move the yarn around? Thanks!
you mean when you are knitting a checkerboard kind of pattern? That's a difficult question, actually. of course, you can just pick the correct color. At the same time, it will create structurally different floats. Now, I am not saying one is better than the other. Just pointing out the difference.
Hi Norman! I've mastered the second cast-on on this video (and I like it!), but I just can't seem to manage the first (invisible) one. I get the stitches onto the needle just fine, but then when I'm knitting the first row, something always goes wrong and I drop a stitch and it just... vanishes! I end up with two strands of yarn connecting the needles and not enough experience/knowledge to figure out how to put them back onto the needle. So: Someone suggested that I try the crochet tubular cast-on, and it does seem like I would find it easier, but I have only seen tutorials for a single colour, and I don't know how to convert it to a two-colour tubular cast-on. Is such a thing possible? And if so, would you be interested in making a tutorial about it?
I wouldn't seem to know how that would be possble. Yes, on a fundamental level the crochet tubular cast-on creates the same fabric but asuming you want to do it with four rows in stockinette stitch you would have to switch colors after two...and maybe let the tails hanging and use that to continue working...not sure how and if that works. Other than that..i mean..i am not sure I can help you with picking up stitches again..i'd have to record a new video for that and right now i don't have the time to do that :(
I ended up with the exact same issue, got the stitches on but everything fell apart in row one. I ended up with a massive amount of slack in between my two needles to the point where it was unmanageable and I ended up dropping stitches. Really curious to figure out what I'm doing wrong. @NimbleNeedles any thoughts on the "gap" between the needles that formed?
Do you know how I would frog a lot of rows of double knitting? I am currently knitting the agnete cardigan by petite knit and forgot to do increases along the way and I need to go back. It is double knitting and brioche stitches that I need to take out. Anyone that can help me 😭🙏🏼🙏🏼
Is that taking up the right side of the v’s on the row below with a separate yarn piece? I’m not sure how to frog the double knitting half away when it’s just a section of the row as the rest of the row is brioche stitch which I also need to frog.

For knitting the invisible cast on in the round, do you need to double-knit back across the cast on stitches first? When I tried to slide them across the needles they all seemed to fall apart.
you don't need to do that but it will be a lot easier. Basically it's just a version of the tubular cast-on

Using “main color” for double knitting is a bit inexact since by its definition, double knitting produces two equal side!
If you ask me, that is, wrong, tho. Except you use a vastly different and more complicated method, you will always end up with a dominant side.
