This video came up on the autoplay while I was knitting a sweater, so I wasn't paying too much attention at the beginning until I noticed the casting. That's some knitting SORCERY, Norman! Can't wait to try that myself!
Oh my goodness I have been agonizing over how make color work on a scarf not look stupid. My beginner self didn’t even realize that double knitting was a thing that exists. You, sir, are a wizard and I am so grateful for this tutorial. My world just just doubled in size.
I am a beginner and I have yet to try this, but I have to say you are my favourite knitting instructor and channel on all of UA-cam! Easier to understand, clear and very clean finishing and advanced techniques and tips! Also, I like that you explain more details of the why - it helps me so much to try to understand it. Thank you for your channel I love it!
There’s a lot of really awful videos on UA-cam about double knitting. Your video is amazing and covered pretty everything I wanted to see! Thank you! Very well thought out.
You took a technique that I struggled with and after watching this video I'm much, much happier and confident with my results, no sitting there ready to start my hair on fire so THANK YOU from the bottom of my heart kind sir, you're a genius!
I have just recently discovered double knitting and am amazed at how it works. Thank you for the clear instructions for casting on and the salvage edges. It looks so clean and neat. I love the way my project is turning out because of it. Thank you!!!
Norman, I have been watching your videos for some time now. As a crocheter for some 13 years, I finally figured out how to knit after watching your videos which taught me the continental method. This was probably around 10 months ago and since then I've returned to your channel, and your blog, again and again. I've gone from a hopeless feeling of 'I'll never be able to knit', to being able to work double knitting, backward knitting, intarsia in the round. Stuff I never thought possible and it's huuugely thanks to your videos and picture tutorils. I've been thinking about signing up for your patreon for a while now but I really don't think I have an excuse not to anymore. Thank you so much! Oh, you're also a pleasure to listen to. Such a beautiful person! You just explain things so wonderfully! They just click with me instantly.
awww...thank you so much for this kind feedback. So happy to here I could help you surmount your fear/respect of knitting. And if you decide to follow me on Patreon, after all, then see you there!
Norman always comes through with the knitting videos!! I always end up back to this channel whenever I'm learning any new techniques and I know if it's Norman it's gonna be a good one!
Dear Norman! You just made my day! Many ecades ago, I learned this technique, then never used it and, forgot. Big thank you for bringing me back. Your exceptional tutorial allows me to start projects that were dormant for some fifty years. Happy knitting! You are such a gift to all of us! 🌞🌈⭐
I started a double knit scarf off of a pattern when I was first learning to knit and the pattern just had you knit both colors together at the end. I was surprised there wasn’t a cleaner looking way to do it, but I made the scarf anyways. Running across your video and seeing how perfect your technique is has me so excited to remake the whole thing! Thank you very much.
This was very helpful. You are a great teacher. You showed what mistakes people commonly make and that was extremely useful. I have started knitting as a hobby fairly recently, and watching these kind of detailed explainations is whats keeping me going. Soo thankful for your video. 💕💕💕💕 pleasecontinue maiing videos and projects.
I have been wanting to try double knitting for ages but it fell by the wayside in favor of other knitting techniques because I hadn't seen anyone showing how to do it. I can't wait to get started with learning this new type of knitting!
Norman, first of all I would like to thank you for your videos and written instructions. I have been a crocheter for about 59 years and finally started learning how to knit, on my own. I could not have gotten this far without your help. Recently I saw something that was double knitted--amazing--I did not know that was a thing! So I have been learning from your video, and I would get a good sized swatch done find a small error, and rip it out and start over. I had quite a bit done yesterday...decided I wanted to start from scratch again and...I could not get it right, it kept coming out with just the repeating of the two colors without the 'magic' of separating the colors front and back. Ripped it out over and over, would have a stitch or two that just was not right. Then after starting over again, watching your video Again ( lost count of how many times) I realized it was as I suspected, a very simple error on my part. The memore trick that finally got this knitting style to sink in for me is simple...when doing the knit stitch that yarn color should be closest to the needle you are working off of and when then doing the purl stitch that color will be closest to that needle as well. As you said many times do not twist your yarns...but I had to do it, see it to get it thanks so much for all you do.
I've been watching a lot of double-knit videos and yours is by far the most comprehensive I've seen yet. Your explanation on how to double-knit ribbing is so clear! I had no idea that was something one could do, I'm super excited to play around with this technique now
I absolutely appreciate you putting out this double knitting tutorial!! You did a great job of explaining and showing how to do it. After watching this, I feel much more comfortable about giving it a try!
This is one of the most advanced tutorials on this technique I've found! I love it. I am struggling to visualize adding a skein of yarn and sewing in ends mid row. I've started a large throw and didn't consider this in advance so now I'm quite worried, and no one has recorded themselves doing this.
I have a video on joining in new yarn here: ua-cam.com/video/xuu_lpzq3rI/v-deo.html For double knitting, you can choose any method where you can hide tails on the backside (i.e. inside)
Your videos have helped me understand the logic behind knitting so much more than I ever have with books alone. Even just watching the first part, a different video you did helped me understand that it's called double knitting because the purl is the reverse of the knit stitch. I wouldn't have understood that just on my own. Thank you for your work!
Good Day to you.. well tomorrow tht is. I for one think the yarn u are showing absolutely perfect. I much prefer it. Thank you for all the time n dedication to a historical craft tht will live on bc of folks who keep it alive. Blessings to u alwys!!
Awesome tutorials. I love that you showed the mechanics of how it works instead of just giving instructions for how to do the stitch. You mentioned a video with cast on steps and this video was very thorough on how to double knit. Is there anything on how to cast off to match your cast on? I have not watched the cast on video maybe it is covered there.
well...as these videos were only mildly sucessful *cough* here on my channel i didn't continue the series. but you can find a tutorial on my blog: nimble-needles.com/stitches/invisible-bind-off-for-double-knitting/
Thanks for the clear instruction on Double Knitting any more videos you have would be helpful esp changing colors in double knitting. I have a pattern that I would love to complete.
You are an excellent instructor, Norman! I've viewed several other videos on double knitting and yours are the best. New subscriber here:-) Thank you for producing these. informative videos.
I Love double knitting. I attend a knitting club where my friends are capable of creating wonderful sweaters, in fairisle, or mittens or socks. But, for them, I am the most skillful (!) simply because I "master" the double knitting technique. I think people is intimidated by all the purls and about being confused about where to knit or purl. My way: I knit with the yarn held in my left hand (continental style) and I purl with the yarn held in my right hand (english style). In this way, I can be fast and following a pattern is as easy as in fairly isle (which I instead do not enjoy due to tension problems). Double knitting to me is easier than fair isle :-)
Thank you so very much for this video. I've been so afraid of trying double knitting, but hearing you explain it all so clearly really helped me a lot! ♥
This is fascinating. I do this but I only used one color and slightly different.? Maybe not. It’s only you are using two different colors. Have to watch this video over again. Thank you.
I love the look of double knitting for color work on scarves and hats. I did it by knitting one colour at a time, and twisting the yarns at the end of each row. You need double pointed needles to do that, but the edge turned out nicely without slipping the stitches. However I think it would be easier to keep track of the colour changes with both yarns together. I also had no idea how ribbing would turn out. Great tutorial as always!
Very helpful. My first project with double knitting is the foral wave jacket featured in Vogue Knitting. although I have done some bioche knitting, this is my first time with double knitting. Thanks for a great insturction.
I've been working on writing up a double-knitting pattern, and I was struggling to find a good tutorial to recommend. As you mentioned, the vast majority of tutorials out there say to bring both yarns to the back to knit and both to the front to purl, and this isn't always correct. Thank you for making this video, so I have something to share that won't lead people astray on my pattern. :)
Favourite tutor when I want to do a project I have never done before like double knitting. How to calculate raglan, etc. I always find my answers in your tutorials wich are clear to understand. Learned to knit and crochet when I was 6 in school and Afghan and tunesian crochet from an aunt of mine. Still i am learning due to you New techniques and materials like sorts of needles etc. Now busy with socks for a big size as my husband has big feet haha and wilde. I always want a good result. Already started back 5 times. Oh need a stitch that widens. Got it. A good exercise Pearl one Stitch one. Needle close zo ik goes faster. After the socks i will proceed double knitting. Base than a hat. I saw the hat you have knitted double. I also want to teach my daughter a lessen. She did not learn does want to but also has always critisism. Why don´t you buy in a store. Because self made is better and warmer. After she is always amazed. How do you do it. Makes me laugh. Realy. Look even men knit I say. Odd no at least they dare and you don´t I say to her. Hahaha Have a great Year 2023 ahead. My best wishes from Belgium.
Super toll erklärt. Ich habe eine Vorlage, bei der immer von "yarn in front" geredet wurde und ich habe nicht verstanden, warum. Dann kam ich zum Ende deines Videos und alles wurde schlagartig klar. :-) Vielen Dank!
Double knitting seems easy enough, but at the same time can be so complicated! One day I'll be brave enough. :D I do enjoy your tutorials! Thank you very much!!!
Just watched your cast on video and watching this one now! I got the hang of the stockinette stitch in double, going to learn color work now! Thank you for your detailed explanations and camera angle!
actually I would hold that it isn't. It just looks advanced but the basic techniques are very beginner friendly imo (well beginner as in past their first couple of projects).
Thank you for this wonderful tutorial. I really respect the way you anticipate and address potential questions and problems (e.g., ribbing, where the yarns are held on opposite sides). The one thing no one seems to have anticipated is how gauge is affected by double knitting when it's not from a pattern. I need to knit some 6" (15 cm) squares. Do I cast on enough stitches for 12" (determined by the yarn's label gauge, then going down a needle size as you advised), anticipating that half will be on each side, and they will naturally be 6" each? Thanks so much❤
Well, that's a good start but from there you will probably have to experiment around a bit. So, it's not gonna turn out the right size in 100% of all cases..maybe 20.
well..that is a little bit more difficult. you basically have to increase both sides at the same time and then slip the stitches around. hard to explain. would have to do a video :(
Because of your wonderful explanation I started to knit big blankes in double face and I really love it as well as your whole knitting chanel. My question: I also love to knit cables but I don't know how it should work with the extra needles in front and backside of the work when twisting is nessesary. Do you know how to knit cables in double face and if yes can you explain it in one of your next tutorials? That would be really great! Thanks a lot!
you cannot really knit cables. I mean, you can but that would require an awful amount of slipping stitches and for most people that just won't look good :(
This is great for continental knitters, but I can’t do that! I’m struggling bc since I do more of an English throw style for my hands. Definitely helpful for some basics though!!
I could watch your knitting videos all day long. In fact, I have done so today! I really appreciate that you explain the reasoning for the mechanics in the placement (front vs. back) of the unused yarn. I have not yet tackled double knitting, but after completing a cowl today (and feeling like I knitted two cowls in order to knit an inside lining to hide the color work in the front), I am ready to give double knitting a try. I realize that the labor is still the same; however, like doing socks two-at-a-time, I like to feel like when I come to the end of a pattern I am REALLY done. =) Thank you for taking the time to record these.
oh true enough! you can use double knitting for cowls. I mean..not sure if it is really faster than knitting a liner to hide the floats but it will give you a lot more choices in terms of the colorwork!
Mr Norman, salut. 🙏🏻🙌🔥You’re always my go-to for comprehensive instruction and also rid me of some sloppy habits. Wish I could come visit awhile. Thank you for sharing your talent with us. 🌷 I do have dyslexia and even though I’m an English knitter, introduced by my German mother, I can usually understand these continental videos… My brain and it’s letter flipping craziness- this was too much for me to follow, although I grasped the concept. Maybe it’s time I find a knitting teacher? Anyone know of an English style dk knitting explanation to recommend?
Do the same double knit techniques apply when you are knitting in the round? I’m making a hat and I want to have a double knit ribbed cuff, (well, I want the whole hat to be double knit) and as someone commented earlier, my mind is doing somersaults! Thank you so much for your clear videos, I love them. Thank you, Norman!
I´m so happy that I found this video. I have never managed to get the pages nice. Been close to giving up. But not anymore :D But.....how do I worm off when I´m done? I don´t remeber how I did before.
Question....I apparently love to be difficult. The very first thing that I ever knitted was a pair of socks. Now, you're amazing and you explain everything so flawlessly. I'm wondering about double knitting in the round and also adding a third color that would be on both sides opposite each other. Any tips or hints?
well, you can knit it in the round..it's the exact same process. As for 3rd color...yeah you could combine it with stranded knitting but I don't have a video for that (yet)
I read about a method where you use the double knitting techniques to make a conventional single fabric in the round. It is supposed to be good for small areas where working in the round becomes difficult, such as in gloves. Also I read about using this method to create sock heels. I find knitting in the round to be awkward in areas like this and was intrigued to learn I could actually work back and forth using a version of double knitting to conquer these areas. Have you ever done this? If so do you have any videos showing the technique or can you recommend some? The world of double knitting is new to me and your videos are excellent! Your instruction is so clear and your videos well made. Thank you.
I don't have a video for it. However, when you use double knitting to fake knitting in the round, the edges will be a major problem. You will need a special technique and your tension..well let's say it will be very difficult to get that right. So all in all, I would say that for the average knitter, knitting int he round is a lot easier. But you can always knit flat and seam with kitchener stitch/matress stitch
@@NimbleNeedles thank you for your advice. It was just something I read about and wondered how well it would work for small areas. I am guessing for me more practice with DPN's is the way to go!
thank you for this video! i got it almost right away, your explanations are clear and easy to follow! i have a question, actually; is it possible to double knit herringbone stitch?
I would say not really. I mean sure..somehow it is certainly doable with a cable needle and lots of fidgeting around...but no..decreases in double knitting are always a bit of a problem and herringbone is just decreases. I can't image it looking very pretty for all the effort it would mean.
Thanks 🙏 a lot for the useful information Would please send me what do you call the little thing what you put it in your finger help you to control two colors Enjoy your time

You're amazing!! Thank you for your videos, they are nice and clear!
You're so welcome, Josefina
Great detailed explanation! Thank you for this video, I'm going to try to make a coaster. Then maybe I'll progress to a hat!🙂
never a bad idea to test a new technique on a little coaster! :)
Never done it before but will try
Wow...thank you for showing us.
I’ll have to try this.
Super toll erklärt. Ich habe eine Vorlage, bei der immer von "yarn in front" geredet wurde und ich habe nicht verstanden, warum. Dann kam ich zum Ende deines Videos und alles wurde schlagartig klar. :-) Vielen Dank!
Das freut mich sehr!
Thanks!
Double knitting seems easy enough, but at the same time can be so complicated! One day I'll be brave enough. :D I do enjoy your tutorials! Thank you very much!!!
That is neat I’ve never seen it done
It's a great technique indeed Wanda!
Just watched your cast on video and watching this one now! I got the hang of the stockinette stitch in double, going to learn color work now! Thank you for your detailed explanations and camera angle!
Wow, This is adbanced knitting
Thanks.💖
actually I would hold that it isn't. It just looks advanced but the basic techniques are very beginner friendly imo (well beginner as in past their first couple of projects).
Quite fascinating , love easy explanation.
At 6;20 I’m grateful for the selvage technique
my pleasure
Very clear tutorial. Thank you! 🙂
Thanks so very much for all your teaching me How do I do reverse color work for a mosaic 3 color design with repeats Thanks Marianne ☺️💜
hi can you show how to change color? I'm obsessed with my pattern, and you make a great video. grateful for help.
I have two videos on changing colors here on my channel already. For now, I feel that us enough
Thank you so much! You made this technique look so much simpler than I’d feared! How do you decrease with double knitting?
well..that is a little bit more difficult. you basically have to increase both sides at the same time and then slip the stitches around. hard to explain. would have to do a video :(
if you use Italian cast on with two yarns, it will fit Kitchener bind-off and looks neat.
I mean, you can but that would require an awful amount of slipping stitches and for most people that just won't look good :(
Thank you for your help ❤
Great video, I was wondering do you have one showing how to bind off in double knitting? Thanks 😊
No video, no
Thank you sooooo much. You are owesome😊
Amazing video, thank you so much for this
Looks like I'm going to be making some dishcloths next so I can practice.
Fantastic
Thank you! Cheers!
This is great for continental knitters, but I can’t do that! I’m struggling bc since I do more of an English throw style for my hands. Definitely helpful for some basics though!!
i'm sorry. Sadly I can only show you the continental way proficiently here on my chanel!
I would love to see double knit in the round
I do have dyslexia and even though I’m an English knitter, introduced by my German mother, I can usually understand these continental videos… My brain and it’s letter flipping craziness- this was too much for me to follow, although I grasped the concept.
Maybe it’s time I find a knitting teacher?
Anyone know of an English style dk knitting explanation to recommend?
sorry, can't help you there :( :(
Do the same double knit techniques apply when you are knitting in the round? I’m making a hat and I want to have a double knit ribbed cuff, (well, I want the whole hat to be double knit) and as someone commented earlier, my mind is doing somersaults!
Thank you so much for your clear videos, I love them. Thank you, Norman!
yeah..the general technique is the same, though there are no return round, obviously.
@@NimbleNeedles Thank you Norman!
I´m so happy that I found this video. I have never managed to get the pages nice. Been close to giving up. But not anymore :D But.....how do I worm off when I´m done? I don´t remeber how I did before.
worm off?
@@NimbleNeedles sorry my english ha ha ha I mean when I´m done and shall stitch off the stitches
Ty explain so clear
Please!. Teach us how to knit the third one. The one that looks vertical strips on two colors!. I really need that!. Thank you very much 💖❤️😊!.
This is good. and I done it before 😄 !
Will do, thanks
Thanks 🙏 a lot for the useful information
Would please send me what do you call the little thing what you put it in your finger help you to control two colors
Enjoy your time
