I haven’t seen anything pertaining to the cast off in any of the videos I’ve watched on this subject. I’m afraid to start a project until I know how that all works. That separation of the two yarns is a revelation:)! Thank you
I knit English combination, my stitches are naturally oriented like you showed so that will definitely make it easier when I try this. I have a few projects I would like to do with double knitting, now I just have to finish the projects I'm working on.
The cast on edge looks so much better than what I first tried. I’m a lever knitter so hold both in my right hand but still make that V. Double knitting is like learning to knit all over again! I’m going to do what I teach… just plain knit a whole small ball of yarn (or in this case two) before switching colours and making a pattern. I need to get the feel. Thanks Coach 😊
It’s really up to you whether you want to keep the Slip Knot as part of your stitch count. I do, but some designers do it differently. Just be sure if you decide not to include it, that you do not knit into those stitches on your first row. You can skip them and then pull out the knot when weaving in your ends.
The answer to that question depends on whether you counted the beginning two strands of yarn in your slip knot as part of the count for the cast on. If you included them, then you would not slip it out, but instead use the two strands as part of your next row. If you did not include them in the cast on count, then you will need to slip it out. 😁
You will continue knitting into the back leg. Please see the Slipped Stitch Edge for Double Knitting video to see how to knit across subsequent rows: ua-cam.com/video/K0F0Z3A1yL0/v-deo.htmlsi=CPL0ItYjJ8I0TAu6
Combo knitting is basically winding the yarn in a clockwise direction when purling and a counter clockwise direction when knitting. You can do the same cast on as in the video, but wind the yarn counter clockwise for the purl stitches and it will be oriented differently.
You are correct! Since double knitting is basically knitting two side of fabric at once, you’ll need double the amount of stitches. Be sure to do a swatch to make sure your hat will fit perfectly! 😉
I tried this method casting on 260 stitches, but while working on row 1 I ended up with a massive amount of slack in between my two needles to the point where it was unmanageable and I ended up dropping stitches. Does this happen to you? Am I doing something wrong that's causing it?
This can happen if your cast on is too loose. One way to combat this is to use a couple needle sizes smaller than the body of your double knitting. For instance, if the pattern calls for size US2 needles, you can go down to size US0 needles just for the cast on row. This also helps with the common “flare” that can happen at the beginning of double knitting.
Great tutorial. Thanks for sharing. May I make suggestions … 1- for a better visual understanding, using a worsted weight yarn would help. 2- best results are obtained by using contrasting colors but for a tutorial, maybe light color needles would also help.
Your using a white yarn against a white background. If TA hard to see what your doing. You also didn’t knit to end of roe to show how to do a smooth selvage and then dropping the double stitch.
Any newbies watching, DO NOT COPY THIS VIDEO! SHE DOESN'T KNOW WHAT SHE DOING! You must have only been knitting in total of your life for 1 hour! If that! Your very first purl stitch you did the correct way way, counter clock wise! The rest where you tried to show off, you're wrapping it clockwise, thus twisting the stitch each time! Then there's your choice of yarn to demonstrate! Why didn't you use dental floss, it's even thinner, or sewing thread to make even harder to see if that's what you were trying to do!!!!🤨🙄 So it can be seen clearer, use at least a Double Knit weight yarn!
Sorry you didn’t enjoy the video. The way I twist the yarn is purposeful in order to allow for less movement in the yarn when holding it Continental and using combination knitting to do this double knitting technique. I apologize for the thin yarn I used. I am a professional knitter but I don’t claim to be a professional videographer.
Why did you go on the attack at the outset? You could have brought your point across without all that drama and the insults. Everyone does the best they an with what they have, with what they know and with their particular skill set. If you didn't enjoy the video, or you felt it didn't give you what you needed to know, you could have asked a question or moved on. There are so many other tutorials, I am sure you would have found what ypu were looking for elsewhere. And if your knitting is so very outstanding and you're an expert videographer, then by all means go ahead and make your own videos and help those of us still navigating this world. Please. And I hope that those viewing are kinder to you than you have been here. Love and light to you❤
Just found this. Thank you so very much. Even though this is 3 years old it's helping me today. Brilliant.
Thanks. This is great. The most simple explanation to date.

Happy to hear you are interested in giving double knitting a try! Here’s a video about how to bind off: ua-cam.com/video/mugqpX9UTrg/v-deo.html

Hi! I think the audio is mixed up at marker 9:59 but it comes back on at 10:00

You're an angel. Thank you for the video, it was easy to follow. Thank you!
You're very welcome!
Thanks for the tips. I will need to watch this a few times to get the hang of it.
Ok I just saw that amazing continental trick and I am AMAZED. THANK YOU
Yay! I’m so happy it helped you!
Thank you! I’m an Eastern European knitter and do it, hold it, the way you do.
Oh that’s perfect!
Really great!!! Thank you from Spain!!
You’re very welcome! ❤️
This is so helpful, thank you!
May I ask
For the needle, what number needle can be use for double knitting so the the knitting look beautiful.
Thank you frm indonesia.
Thank you for this technique. I don't like long tail cast on. Thank you again.
Thank you very much for this wonderful tutorial!!
I took my last light st and did a backward loop. Then I did my first row of knitting.
Great video! Please clarify: Is the slip knot included in the stitch count? Other videos say to drop the slip knot later. Thank you!

@@donielleshowvaytheknitting165 Thank you for your quick reply!
I just started your Tree of Gondor blanket and when I come to the end of the first row should I unravel the slip knot?
The answer to that question depends on whether you counted the beginning two strands of yarn in your slip knot as part of the count for the cast on. If you included them, then you would not slip it out, but instead use the two strands as part of your next row. If you did not include them in the cast on count, then you will need to slip it out. 😁
Do you only knit into the back leg for that first row or is this continuous through out?
You will continue knitting into the back leg. Please see the Slipped Stitch Edge for Double Knitting video to see how to knit across subsequent rows: ua-cam.com/video/K0F0Z3A1yL0/v-deo.htmlsi=CPL0ItYjJ8I0TAu6
What’s the Congo or whatever method you did? Why knit in the back loop to orientate? Is there a different cast on that’s correct from the start?
Combo knitting is basically winding the yarn in a clockwise direction when purling and a counter clockwise direction when knitting. You can do the same cast on as in the video, but wind the yarn counter clockwise for the purl stitches and it will be oriented differently.
I hold my knit st in my continental hand and my Purl in my throwing hand. Move them into position as needed.
Plse tell me, if I want to knit a cap in the round with 144 sts but I am double knitting, do I need to cast on double that amount of stitches?
You are correct! Since double knitting is basically knitting two side of fabric at once, you’ll need double the amount of stitches. Be sure to do a swatch to make sure your hat will fit perfectly! 😉
Is there a way to make he cast off look similar? I want to knit a scarf and therefore both ends should look the same.
Yes! Here’s a video showing how to do it! ua-cam.com/video/sCFaE6t1bOs/v-deo.htmlsi=KHaJKLjhPWQuejxy
@@donielleshowvaytheknitting165Thank you so much for the quick answer! I actually searched for it, but sometimes UA-cam brings strange results.

@donielleshowvaytheknitting165 do you switch needles on the first row of knitting (set up row) or after the first row?
Neat! 😊

Such small needles and yarn too
i can’t see anything it’s so small
Thanks very much for this simple explanation.
Glad it was helpful!
Very difficult
It can take practice to get the hang of this technique. But it is worth it to achieve the professional edging. Keep trying. I know you can do it. ❤️
