- When it came to upsets this season, there have been plenty across the Overwatch League, but none can quite compare to the underdog run that was the Shanghai Dragons that saw them go from the worst team in esports history to Stage 3 Champions.
After struggling to get started in Stage 1 and having to bear the burden of an embarrassing 0-40 legacy the Shanghai Dragons with their new roster had a great deal to prove in 2019.
Luckily with a revamped roster, the team was able to figure out a playstyle in a GOATS dominant meta that works for them and climb their way to the top, taking down the likes of SF Shock and Vancouver Titans along the way, to ultimately claim their first Stage title.
In today's video, we explore how the Shanghai Dragons were able to accomplish such a feat in Stage 3 by analyzing the tactics used to help them accomplish their greatest achievement to date.

Streamline pretty sure Super said that owl players knew about role queue at the beginning (or end, don’t remember) of stage 2, so it was decided before
Akshon Esports yes, it was more of a variety of comps and more fun to watch (maybe I’m biased because my fav team is Shock)
@Enda O'Rourke the teams still have Goats in them so they play comps in 2 2 2 that like a brick wall, if one goes down, everything goes down kinda way like goats. I feel like we just have to wait till more heroes to come. If teams want to redo what shanghai did in the playoffs, they need find a second tank that could fill a role of dps like youngjin did on doomfist.
Dragons with the big brain comp makes me a little sad about 2-2-2 despite that I love role lock.. simply because I was amazed by how the Dragons adapted and were the only team to figure out a counter to GOATs, rather than playing a mirror
They didn't find a counter to Goats... It's the same thing that Clockwork Vendetta did: they got really good at a comp that revolved around their individual strenght (dding's pharah and Diem's Widow mainly) that other teams didn't know how to fight against because they lacked practice against.
Shock played GOATS for a lot of the playoffs finals and almost beated them.

I wish there was a way for them to open role queue back up but have a minimum of 1 player from each role to allow flexibility but that would just lean back into Sombra Goats. Or even allowing it at OWL/Contenders level but I still feel like Sombra Goats would be dominant. I love seeing whacky comps work, that's why Chengdu are fun even within role lock because you never know what they're going to run.
Role queue started the downfall of this game and is stupid af. For solo queue I get it but it was just a cheap way to get out of balancing tanks and healers. Owl league players should have any wacky comp they want that they can make work and being unrestricted leads to much more intriguing picks.

@@christophermarsh1580 They desperately needed to drop S1 support players. They always had terrible positioning and was a big factor in their losses.

Yeah, the awful results in season 1 were very likely due to the fact that they had underqualified support players (Fiveking only knew how to play Lucio at a barely acceptable level!) and they were subjected to an unreasonable and unhealthy training regimen to try and make them competitive, which backfired. It's likely that the entirety of the fault rests on the management and the org.
I feel like we're going to have a different stage champion at each stage and that cheers me up :)

Christian Kid Colin you act like shock and titans haven’t had easy as hell schedules too. none of the top three teams have had difficult regular season matches, hell, nyxl hasn’t even lost to shock ever. they’re not as good at reaper mei comps but their dive comp and when goats was a thing, their goats was a force to be reckoned with. every team has a meta they aren’t good with. vancouver, bunker. nyxl, mei/reaper, shock, dive. nyxl isn’t trash
Same reason as how EPIC store is kicking Steam ass. But giving what the fans or gamer want, free stuff and free stuff. Shanghai dragon properly get spoiled with free stuff, because of those chinese overlord deep pockets.

I think ow should have 2 modes in quick play i is role lock and another one is the old ways and the rank should only have role lock that would be very good
You explain it as if it's easy to pull off, but every piece of the comp had to do it's job to not fall apart. Ana had to keep high heals on 1 tank, that had to survive alone on point, widow and phara had to hit shots so gamsu cant get ran over, and mercy had to keep on phara without getting picked
Even if everyone hate goats I would rater play that meta than have to deal with pharamercy in lower ranker without a decent dps. Pharamercy is more entertaining to watch on stream but not as fun to play so I hope they won't influence people too much

@@Akshonesports yes and no, as an healer I can give my active contribute vs goats, especially with Ana. While aganist pharamercy I have to just hide around until someone pick hits and try to melt her down

Disappointed you make no mention of the balance patches. Shanghai Dragons has come a long way to beat Titans here but it should be noted a big part of the reason this was doable is because of the MYRIAD of nerfs to GOATS.

Incorrect. Aside from diya, the entirety of the season one roster got kicked out of Shanghai dragons. None of them have been picked up by another pro team. This an entirely new roster that is actually good, which is why they won this.
And now they're not even the best Chinese team in role lock. Tragic.
