I just know them from a cool “unsolved mystery” show they used to do with BuzzFeed AGES ago…. They fit with Dr Grandes genre…. Eventually the quit and did their own thing…. Which didn’t really interest me…. So I had no idea what they had been up to since….

They're UA-cam content creators that got a little too big for their britches, this is pretty common on UA-cam and I follow a channel penguinz0 where the content creator, a guy named Charlie who has over 14 million subs, comments on this stuff pretty regularly...

Based on what I have read about them, they've hired too many friends and family members as employees. Saying they need to let a few employees go is putting it lightly. I can't even pretend to imagine why they would need 25 employees. They already have a patreon with a lot of followers.
Maybe that's how they came to the deluded conclusion that they make television-caliber shows.
I think they understand video production more than they understand economics.

I cancelled Netflix and give Dr. Grande $10/month via Patreon instead. He never demanded me to, but I watch his videos WAY more often and for HOURS more per month than I did Netflix, and my life is much more wholesome for it. Surprisingly, I have never watched one of his members-only videos on Patreon...

The idea that their viewers would be interested in paying for something that they had hitherto gotten for free is a Grade-A delusion.
The duo Shane and Ryan are the reason why people followed them from Buzzfeed. But the other guy Steven, has his own segments and one of his is just him traveling around the world and trying incredible fancy food. like 1000$ items... and giving a review. and he only gets 1/2 the viewership to Ryan and Shane. If they just cut that food travel segment, I know 1000% they would save their company. But Steven is the CEO... so he wouldn't cut that. Thank you Dr. Grande, we appreciate you!
It is far more nuanced than that and everyone reducing it to 'Steven is greedy' is disconcerting. Ryan and Shane wanted Steven to be the CEO despite them all being founders because he was more business minded.
I did not think Watcher went about this in the right way, the messaging was appalling, but fans reacted out of pocket, particularly towards Steven.
Everyone wants a scapegoat but sometimes situations are more complicated than we would like to admit.
Travel costs way too much. That segment needs to go.
Na....Ryan is a dick...he wants to be famous so bad...he isn't as bad at Stevens asshole self......but Shane is the ONLY halfway decent one here...and he should have known better. He should RUN and try to save his reputation, because at this point because this show is TOAST....DONE...They have alienated too many people...including me...I will NEVER watch again

There are content creators that have the additional subscription app approach. They can post uncensored content that’s too much for UA-cam or Patreon or advertisers.

I watched Ryan and Shane years ago when they were with Buzzfeed and would cover historic murder mysteries, such as the story of Lizzie Borden and Jack the Ripper. They added humor to their videos and had a great rapport. But I’d lost track of them over the last several years.

I get offers to try a new streaming service for a free or low cost subscription all the time. They found out the hard way how much competition they have

Now that youtube is older we are seeing channels get greedy and desperate. Ive seen lots of my favorite channels pivot to something else. I can feel the desperation with these channels. Its crazy that people arent satisfied with Advertising money, youtube money and Patrion money. UA-cam used to be something people enjoyed for free now its like walking into San Francisco with bumbs looking for handouts. The average person is now paying more to watch youtube than cable. Its a crazy world we live in.

The benefits are definitely worth it. I haven't had cable/satellite for years. In my opinion, that's $$ that could be better spent but $12.95 a month for no ads, videos that run in the background, family accounts, & more, is worth it.

I've followed them since they were at Buzzfeed, and I enjoy the content that does not feature Steven Lim, but I agree that it's not "tv quality" (which they seem to define as being on par with Netflix). I fear they have alienated some of their audience and am curious to see how they will do going forward.

This kind of story plays itself out continuously in which entrepreneurs with some technical or aesthetic expertise disregard the importance of business and management ability when launching their businesses. In many cases they even avoid engaging in management activities because they dislike them and sometimes even believe that such concerns are the "problem" they perceive in the markets or industries in which they are engaged. They avoid calling in others to help them areas of their businesses in which they do not have ability. I am now retired. During my career I witnessed this happen many times in a number of industries ranging from manufacturing, retailing of all kinds, restaurants and food. Many small businesses fail and this is a major cause.
