Meh. John Woo should never have tried to make a spy thriller. I haven't watched MI2 since it was released but the guy can't do "brain". This was the same era as Bourne Identity. So...MI2 doesn't count.
I remember the trailers for this movie being hype af back in the day, the TV spot was that dope scene with the predator drone blowing up the car and Tom flying into the car next to him.

Congrats, you made it past the first (requisite) 3 movies. Now, the series REALLY hits its stride. You will be introduced to other characters that you will just love. I've been enjoying all your reactions to the series, keep it up guys!
This was a pretty fun movie. The introduction of Benji was a really nice addition, and to a lesser degree Julia. MI:3 was a step in the right direction, MI:4 is fantastic, and then MI:5-7 with a shared writer/director continue the excellence. Avoiding JJ Abrams films at all cost since Star Trek has made me forget how obsessed the man is with lens flares. Like, jesus...
25:45 I always did love the fact that the actors who play the villains get a brief and short role of being the main character disguised as them. Phillip Seymour Hoffman playing a ruthless villain in this film but also getting to act like Tom Cruise in disguise as himself while pretending to be him must have been super fun. May he rest in peace.
MI2 was basically a John Woo movie featuring Ethan Hunt. If you loved Face/Off then you'd absolutely be on board with MI2, but 3 onwards have a much more unified style, though the directors do give each a little twist. The mix of espionage, beautiful locations and spectacular set-pieces makes for a really fun series.
I am partial to this one cuz I worked on the set for a couple days. Not IN the movie or anything - just on set. But this made me a HUGE TC fan. Everyone - from top to bottom - was bringing their 100% A-game. For every.single.aspect of the movie. And all his productions are like that. It’s astounding.
That cold open is legendary, and MI3 was the first movie in a while before that, of any kind, that gave that feeling as you walk back to the car like " goddamn that was 🔥🔥🔥" LOVE IT?
Okay, I have to say, now that you have watched the first three, please, PLEASE don't stop here. The series gets SO SO BETTER from here. Mission Impossible 4, 5, 6 and 7 are four of the BEST EVER action flicks ever. They are so different from the first three, you'll know when you watch them. So, please, don't stop here. I promise you, you'll be blown away. 🙂
The good news is that there's even better things to come! This is a fantastic series and this is when it found itself. The first movie is a gem of suspense but this one let it surpass James Bond because it has both solo spy goodness and ensemble adventure as well. Too, too good!
This is definitely my favorite of the ones I've seen (seen 1-4 and haven't seen further). Hoffman was incredible as a villain - not physically threatening or terribly competent in a physical sense (as evidenced by even as handicapped as he was how fast Ethan took him out at the end) but just terrifying as hell with his delivery and the representation of his power.
Best. Reaction. Ever. I love you, guys!! Thank you for this. I felt like I was in the room watching with you’ll. This is a special one for me because of the back story of Tom Cruise having watched J.J.’s show, Alias, and loving it so much that he handpicked J.J. to direct this and bring J.J.’s team on from Giaccino’s music composition to J.J.’s casting directors to J.J.’s writing team. Phenomenal. I loved, Alias, and so I loved that villain scene with Hoffman & Cruise fighting and the Giaccino music score making it Soooo intense!! Chef’s kiss! Anyway, have a great night and can’t wait for your next reaction! Much love! 🫶❤😉👍😁😎🥳
I love MI:3. It’s my second favourite of the franchise. I love the darker tone. I love that JJ Abrams (with his first film as a director here) channels his TV show Alias in this (that did a lot of high action scenes and also starting in the future and then flashing back). Plus, it’s funny you mentioned True Lies, as him talking about his boring job and the bridge sequence both remind me of that film. Philip Seymour Hoffman is so darn good in this.
This movie is my introduction into the Mission Impossible franchise, the third movie. Everything is all too good from start to finish. This holds a special place in my heart being the best MI movie out of all MI movies.
@@Billyregin Exactly. The tone and base had to be set first. Imagine starting with 3. Everyone would have said it was too insane and ridiculous of a plot to be realistic at all.. The best movie in the series. I love how Ethan's private life is involved, it get personal and you feel for the character. After the third one it became to ridiculous again. This movie is one of the best action movies with casino royale!
28:05 Fun fact: That really was an explosion that they got to film for the movie. Blowing up the car was the very last thing they filmed at the Vatican. Getting permission from them was incredibly difficult and had to be planned safely and as precisely as possible. You can't just blow something up right then and there; so the film crew had to work hard to get it all in one take. Getting approval from the Vatican to film the car explosion is pretty impressive.
It will always be a travesty that the Fast and Furious movies make more money than these. This series has great acting, really good writing especially for an action series, great villains, and REAL stunts. Yet the franchise with horrible acting and awful CGI and terrible writing and the lead sounds likes having a massive stroke is more successful
Why can you only like one and not both? I saw both Fast & Furious 10 AND Mission Impossible 7 in theaters AND on opening day. I'm a fan of both, and gave them both my money. I also just bought Fast & Furious 10 on Blu-Ray, and I will be buying Mission Impossible 7 on Blu-Ray.

But honestly the movies just get better from here-better stories, better stunt sequences, and even a better team as the core members begin to solidify. MI: 4 is great, but I consider 5-7 exceptional.
The 4th one is objectively the one that gave the franchise a resurgence. Incorrect to say it was this one. They were considering replacing Cruise, but the 4th one was so successful they changed their mind. It made the most money, and started off the unbelievable death defying stunts. This movie is great, but you're incorrect
Liked right after the "HANG AROUND" haha! Well played! Yes, 2 is kinda the odd duck. John Woo's style as you noted might be fun but it's not serious and therefore, not sustainable for this series. 2 was poorly received overall and that is in part why the gap was long. PSH was great!
The opening flash forward was one of the very first movies to ever do it (which JJ Abrams had used in his TV series Alias a few years before) and is one of my favourite openings to a movie ever. It has been overused in movies/shows since MI3 though for sure. Cruise's acting from trying to go through trying to "handle" Davian through lies and manipulation until he realises it isn't working and begs him to not kill her is spectacular. My favourite movie of the series closely followed by MI6 Fallout.
Awesome movie! Watched it so many times! The next one, Ghost Protocol, is my favorite in the whole fantastic series so far. Such creative and awesome action scenes. Can't wait to see how you like it!
I always have a hard time deciding which I like better Bond or Mission Impossible. This movie and the following movies are absolutely made for the theater. Jah bless you both 🖤💪 Can't wait until you drop Ghost Protocol which is my personal favorite.
Mission Impossible only has one bad movie, the second, and its not even that bad. The most recent James Bond series has 3 bad movies, and all are worse than mission impossible 2
guys you only have a few more to catch up with the next one. 4 Ghost Protocol, 5 Rogue Nation, 6 Fallout, thay are one story ark so enjoy them. the 7th one Dead Reckoning Part One only came out this July and starts us on a new story ark.
They need to react to dead reckoning is well l get that they would not watch till it comes out on dvd and blu ray like when they can watch it digitally
Yeah, that filming and the director JJ Abrams (Lost, The Force Awakens) was really in his game and his signature fun filming style. Other movie debatable plotting approach, aside. I think he was top of his game, so to speak, at this time with Lost. Man, the late great Philip Seymour Hoffman! Did you see his (SPOILER, THIS MOVIE) mimicry of Tom Cruise with the cheerful handgrab, I think? This lit a good fire boosting the franchise forward! 🚀!!
One wasn't bad, but not great but still a classic. Two is the WORST in the series, just a summer popcorn flick. Three onward...WOW!!! They are excellent and intense and well done and we get invested in these! =D
Best open of any movie ever? Perhaps? It really sets the tone for the whole film. I saw Insider do a breakdown of that scene and its apparently textbook what an agent shouldn't be doing, it's a real Insight into how broken he is.
And if u haven't reviewed JJ Abrams TV shows, Alias and Lost, shame on both of u! Pro tip.... Quentin tarrantino directs and is in, a couple of the Alias, shows 😮😮😮
Phillip was such a good guy and actor, he just couldn't beat his demons. Most of his parts were small but he always maxed them out. He had parts in Almost Famous, a surreal life intertwining movie with Tom Cruise in Magnolia, Scent of a Woman, Leap of Faith, Twister, Flawless, the amazing Talented Mr Ripley, Capote, The Boat that Rocked, and did a real spy part based on a actual job called, A Most Wanted Man. He did a lot of movies with the off center director Paul Thomas Anderson, and really they are all watchable!
I love that y’all are watching these! This is probably my second favorite Mission Impossible movie behind Fallout. That one is my favorite. Ghost Protocol and Rogue Nation were good but but Fallout was just phenomenal and I can’t wait for you to watch it!
Just watched the reaction and thought you should know. The Dark haired guy on Ethan’s team was the Warrior Bishop from Vikings. I did hope you would recognize him! Just wanted to tell you guys!
I know most won't agree with me, but 1 is still best. The strange character in Max, the storyline, the beautiful camera work, long no edits, no dialogue, plot twists, all because of the great director, Brian DePalma. He uses action, to complete a point, not as a big impressive thing, to blow ur mind.
To get Nikki over her way out of control fear of heights(which at its core is about loss of balance and falling even if only to the ground from off a single step up) Take her to one of those retail jump stores, where u get in a air chamber , wear a flight suit, an instructor goes with u to control u, and air blows u upward about ten-15 feet.
Hi Steven, if you want to be pretentious, that technique of showing the middle or end at the beginning is called 'in media res' (res is prounounced rez). It's Latin for 'in the midle of the story'. Action/thriller movies love doing it, but it's REALLY hard to be suspenseful rather than spoiling your big moments.
I always felt like Tom Cruise looked like my dad. I never told anyone because I felt stupid. When I'd put them next to each other, they probably wouldn't look too much alike, but Nikki, I totally get the "member of the famliy"-feeling. It's super weird 🙈
I agree: MI3 is a fantastic film! What blows me away is how relatively poorly the latest movie is faring at the box office, given how highly favored it is by critics and audiences, and in spite of the general success of the series. To date, it hasn't earned enough to be considered anything but a flop, thanks in part due to the success of "Barbie," which is, in essence, an anti-men feminist fantasy flick (a whole other topic). In the accounting departments of modern Hollywood, MI7 would need to earn at least a billion dollars to be considered a success.
Out of all the Mission Impossible movies, this is the one I like the LEAST ... and yet, I still consider it a great movie. That's how strong this franchise is.

The gap was more long from 1st to 2nd film
The opening flash forward was one of the very first movies to ever do it (which JJ Abrams had used in his TV series Alias a few years before) and is one of my favourite openings to a movie ever. It has been overused in movies/shows since MI3 though for sure. Cruise's acting from trying to go through trying to "handle" Davian through lies and manipulation until he realises it isn't working and begs him to not kill her is spectacular. My favourite movie of the series closely followed by MI6 Fallout.
Sunset Boulevard (1950) did a flashback opening with a dead man telling the story of events leading to his death.
Moral of the story is don't marry a secret agent too much trouble for marriage
My favorite one out of the MIs.
RIP Philip Seymour Hoffman
This is where the series takes off.
M:I is probably the most consistent action movie franchise.
guys you only have a few more to catch up with the next one. 4 Ghost Protocol, 5 Rogue Nation, 6 Fallout, thay are one story ark so enjoy them. the 7th one Dead Reckoning Part One only came out this July and starts us on a new story ark.
They need to react to dead reckoning is well l get that they would not watch till it comes out on dvd and blu ray like when they can watch it digitally
yes you can give cpr to a person that is electrocuded, but its not gonna bring the heart back to work, you need to shock it to do that.
This movie is awesome!
That's why Steven has to pay attention. He constantly looks away and doesn't see what happens in the movie
I am sitting with someone watching these movies. I’m going to look at the person I’m watching with every once in a while.
Still my favourite movie in the franchise. Best villan, best acting by Tom and the whole team.
19:09 -19:39 I wonder if the plot of Dead Reckoning was set up right there. As from I read, involves AI and a cult.
If Nikki hates heights, wait until M:I 4. 😬😬😬
Or Fallout.
Phillip Seymour Hoffman was the best actor ever R.I.P Great reaction 👍🏾
14:41 Ironic that Steven looks away to say "Hopefully, it works!" at the exact right moment to miss it not working.
Laurence Fishburbe was the best IMF director. Hopkins close 2nd
Watch the Americans with Keri Russell. Amazing show!!!!
R.I.P. to the Oscar winner Philip Seymour Hoffman❤😿Greetings from Germany❤
To get Nikki over her way out of control fear of heights(which at its core is about loss of balance and falling even if only to the ground from off a single step up)
Take her to one of those retail jump stores, where u get in a air chamber , wear a flight suit, an instructor goes with u to control u, and air blows u upward about ten-15 feet.
Hi Steven, if you want to be pretentious, that technique of showing the middle or end at the beginning is called 'in media res' (res is prounounced rez). It's Latin for 'in the midle of the story'. Action/thriller movies love doing it, but it's REALLY hard to be suspenseful rather than spoiling your big moments.
watch “just go with it“ with adam sandler and jenifer aniston and a very cool and funny movie!!!!!!!!!!!
Love y’all! 💚🥰💚
I always felt like Tom Cruise looked like my dad. I never told anyone because I felt stupid. When I'd put them next to each other, they probably wouldn't look too much alike, but Nikki, I totally get the "member of the famliy"-feeling. It's super weird 🙈
I just can't handle Nikki's references saying "thats what she said"! LOL🤪🤪🤪
Among all the praise don't forget: This was J.J. Abrams first feature film... 😅
Out of all the Mission Impossible movies, this is the one I like the LEAST ... and yet, I still consider it a great movie. That's how strong this franchise is.
And people say Cruise can't act this scene between him and Phillip Seymour Hoffman was brilliant
... I'm sorry... You got robbed 😳 you can't just say that and skip past that we need details
