The movie reveals that he is a former Defense Intelligence agent (DIA). The second movie goes into more detail about the DIA. He's old enough to be living off of his pension, but DIA also get "danger pay" bonuses like any other military related profession. So, he probably has a massive fortune to live off of on top of his pension for all of the danger pay bonuses he collected over the years. Yet, he still lives modestly and efficiently like the soldier he will always be.

Denzel Washington is just ageless. 60 years old in this film. Third movie is expected in September and he'll be 68 going on 69. Man is immortal! Love all of his films. Man on Fire, Fences and The Book of Eli are all favourites of mine, but he has such a filmography under his belt.

It's an amazing way of revealing who these characters are. Like you said, for Teddy, it shows he's used to intimidating people. He's a spooky dude. For Robert, he took a tactically advantageous position by meeting him at the head of the stairs. A regular Joe wouldn't do that and Teddy knew if Robert was the guy he's looking for, he killed 5 armed guys undetected. Teddy definitely knew and even said in the car, "Everything about him is wrong." Best scene in the movie.

I really love Denzel in this. He's so calm and collected. He even gives the bad guys a chance to do the right thing. He was willing to give $9,800 to buy the girl's freedom and only hurt people when they gave him no choice. But as mentioned...his demeanor is what made this movie. He didn't look like he was putting in any effort and he sort of shut off all of his emotions when he had to kill people. Such a great performance.

It seems you missed a really cool detail during Bob and Nikolai's last talk. When Nikolai asks Bob what he sees when looking at him, Bob tells the story of a troubled child taken in by a kind and empathetic man and given a chance at a life, only for the man and his wife to be murdered. He says he believes the child did it, fearing the man would one day decide he wasn't worth it and not wanting to find out. The implication is that the child in the story is Nikolai, and that Bob did his research on him (showing the connections and information he has access to). He then states that he gave the men he killed a chance and they made their decision, and he gives Nikolai the chance to make his. The men made the same mistake Nikolai made way back and now they're dead for it, and he's giving him the opportunity not to make that mistake again.

Actually, she says he didn't come for help, he came for permission. I have a problem with that line, which doesn't make a lot of sense in context. Robert DID come to get her help in identifying this brutal villain and his associations, so that he can decide how to exact revenge and more. She gives him some psychological boost as well, and provides information that helps him justify doing what he's about to do. So maybe that's a stretch of the word permission.

There could be the context like what you said about knowing what to go after, or even if there is some reason the agency wouldn't want him to. The info she got could have been just her being informed on if there were any issues with going after them. There is a lot of misdirection in the scene. That first verbal showdown between them is insane. They both know, yet neither one can say yet. Both are at the top of their game... Teddy just doesn't realize that his top game is WAY short. Straight admitting he was there that night throws him. Being reminded to leave his card throws him. He did good. Most wouldn't have caught those. LOVE this movie. The tension is incredible. And how he is protrayed to everyone else as calm, mild mannered, always helping anyone... and then his utterly brutal and rapid takedown of anyone who gets in the way of someone he wants to help... it's amazing. And the 2nd one really builds on it and gives some backstory to him. Also has some of the best scenes.
I love that they highlight his observational skills. Notice everything all at once. Anything can be a weapon, use whatever you have at hand. Speed and overwhelming force. Fun fact, honey is great for disinfecting wounds. Has antimicrobial and antibiotic properties. Specific type though, not just any. So that was a really cool and accurate little scene. Also, honey never goes bad.

There was a TV series back in the day, and they rarely/barely explained his past. His "newspaper ad" was "Odds against you, call the Equalizer" and basically he helped underdogs being victimized by bad guys. It was very fun to watch.
Now they have these movies and a new series.

He’s what you would consider a sleeper agent. There are triggering methods that he uses to remove the fear. It’s control.
When he opens and closes the doors and locks it. It puts him in control.
And when he sets the timer. It’s him turning it into a timed speed run. It’s a mental control that allows him to fight with maximum efficiency and removes the fear element.
He’s effectively a killing machine at that point.

Notice that when Robert has the nail gun against Teddy's throat, Teddy slowly nods as if to say, "Please end this for me." It's both an act of defiance and accepting his fate. The second movie is good too. I hope they do a third, even though 1 and 2 only did fairly well (not bad but not great). I've seen this one dozens of times and that first scene with the Russian mob is so well done.

I cannot believe it either that it's taken you so long to watch 'The Equalizer' (2014), but nevertheless, I'm so glad you hadn't now, because it was so much fun watching your reactions, I enjoyed re-watching it again with you guys and liked you enjoyed this vigilante story, his OCD and his special skills in exterminating the enemy and you're right, the kills were unique. Denzel is one of my favourite actors, I just LOVE him in every film he does. Not sure if you've seen these two, but you may enjoy reacting to "Safe House" and "Inside Man" as well.
Nikki you made me laugh when you shouted "With a book b**** with a book, with a *bleep n* book." One of the best lines of the movie was when 'Robert McCall'/'The Equalizer' said "When you pray for the rain you've got to deal with the mud too" - I agree with you Nikki, "WORD".
Next best line when 'Robert McCall'/'The Equalizer' tells 'Nicolai "Teddy" Itchenko' after interrupting his meal at the table in the restaurant about the promise he made to someone he loved very much that he wouldn't go back to being that person he wasn't proud of and proceeds to tell him "but for you I'm gonna make an exception" - SCARY when a man like 'The Equalizer' tells you those words, you better believe him! I absolutely loved this whole restaurant scene with 'McCall' telling the story of the little Russian kid, showing 'Nicolai' he'd done his research on him, but implied in a subtle way etc etc.
Yep the chills in this movie and the next are real Steve', but LOVE and laughed so hard when you said "Home Alone the Adult Edition".😂🤣🤣🤣
Once again, a GREAT reaction as ALWAYS!

If you ever get the chance to see some of the behind the scenes about the fight coordination, it’s worth your time. It really demonstrates how military special ops weaponize observation, it’s not just about noticing things others don’t, they catalog, categorize and activate everything and everyone around them so they can be precision weapons with whatever is at hand. So much so, that they don’t feel they need to have or use traditional weapons and can predict outcomes at an exceptionally high percentage.

Vigilante stories have been around for a long time and people never get tired of them. I remember back in the day there were many many tv shows with that particular type of genre all over the air. The A-Team, Stingray, Knight Rider just to name a few off the top of my head. Never get tired of them. I think even back in old time radio show days there were some, The Shadow is the only one I can think of at the moment as I used to listen to them.

Robert McCall in the TV series was essentially MI6 (like 007), but Denzel's iteration was CIA or something like that, a field operative. Which is why he knows martial arts, weapons, etc. The reason he got out of the spy business was his late wife. Elena (played by "Hit Girl" herself, was the reason he got back in, the young man whose mother got burned out, was just the icing on the cake. That and the enforcer coming on the scene.
