She’s still vacuuming because one of the agents, the woman, said to her in crispiest, native Russian “keep cleaning, grandma, keep cleaning”. Which is remarkable, because usually movies mess up Russian, and because we’re in Prague, and supposed to speak Czech.

    • @AlanGresov
      @AlanGresov 6 місяців тому

OK I WAS VERY CONFUSED ABOUT THAT, because I also just watched this movie for the first time recently and they said something about being in Prague but I swear the subtitles also mentioned speaking Russian, I didn't know if I was meant to take something from that or not.

    • @karlmortoniv2951

@@AlanGresov As Phelps alludes to in the movie, the wall only came down a few years before this movie came out so assuming that Russian might be understood by spy types makes sense to me. A lot of the IM guys were probably trained to work in or against Russia so more of them would have been trained to speak Russian than Czech, wouldn't they? Of course, the real world explanation is probably that someone decided nobody would know the difference and blew it off but I can rationalize just about anything given a minute. 😉

I was in charge of back end profit participation reporting for the Mission Impossible series up until 2006, when I left Paramount. Cruise partnered with Paula Wagner early on to gain legitimacy as a producer. For MI:2 he took the SAG minimum salary of $56k in exchange for an even bigger role as producer, and a bigger cut of the back end, in order to free up cash in the budget to attract John Woo to direct. Woo was THE trendy director in Hollywood at the time. TC’s back end was about 50% of gross on MI:2. I cut him a check for $52M after the first two weeks of box office, the biggest check I ever held during my time in Hollywood.

I can only imagine it is WEIRD for the OG Mission Inpossible fans to see this.
For those who dont know, when I said "OG", I mean REALLY old.
The franchise was originally a TV series. The main character of that show....was the surprise villain of this movie.
That twist was the main reason why the OG actor did not reprise his role.
I imagine it would be heartbreaking for the OG fans for their hero to be killed and witness the killer/protagonist to star in even more MI movies.

Even Bill Shatner appeared as a recurring character. The famous theme was composed by Argentine composer, Lalo Schifrin who based it off of the sound of the Morris Code for the Letters M and I (dot dot dash dash).

    What up.
    Late comment.
M:I is based on one of several tv series, created by Bruce Gellar.
Among many to hit television of the 1960s Spy craze.
My introduction to M:I was the second series from the late 1980s that
featured characters of the original series with newer characters.
Tom Cruise in the mid-1990s officially became a producer by
forming a company with Paula Wagner.
Both were given the greenlight for the rights to make M:I as an movie.
This was 1 of 2 films for Cruise in 1996 (the other was Jerry Maguire).
This first film matches the tv series at almost perfect beat.
Thanks to this franchise, Cruise becomes a even bigger movie star and
the consummate stunt performer we know today.
The legendary theme by Lalo Scrifrin is so timeless with Intrigue and excitement.
Adam Clayton & Larry Mullen from the group, U2 did the new version for the 1st movie.
As reruns of the tv series resurged during the movie's success, Cruise definitely had a franchise.
Also there was tie-in media, the video game by Ocean and the M:I comic book series aka The Ethan Hunt Chronicles from Marvel.
I couldn't wait for more missions as an fan, coming soon and I chose to accept them all.

You know, technically, Tom Cruise is responsible for the recasting of Rachel Dawes between Batman Begins and The Dark Knight, and also almost singlehandedly responsible for the DCEU Mustachegate. I'm sure neither of those were intentional or even really on that dude's radar.
Also, he has an odd number of teeth, his top front tooth is directly in the center of his mouth.
ALSO -- Tom Cruise is the first celebrity freak out that I was like, 'Fuck yeah, dude!" while listening to. I don't know if you guys saw that one. I don't know if they were filming Top Gun Maverick or filming Mission Impossible 6 or 7, but it was during the pandemic and the production was only allowed to continue on the condition that everybody in the crew followed all of these strict guidelines and precautions, and then Tom saw somebody next to a camera not wearing a mask and flipped the fuck out on them because "I'M TOM FUCKING CRUISE, I'M FINE, BUT THEY'RE LOSING THEIR HOMES AND WE ARE THE REASON THESE CREWMEMBERS GET TO FEED THEIR KIDS" and I was like... These reactions are gonna be fun if you guys haven't seen many of the movies recently. :)
This first "Mission: Impossible" movie was in development for a HELL of a long time. The original plan for the team that got killed was to have people from the TV show come back and play those parts but the actors were fairly hale and hearty at the time and they were all, "I'm sorry, but fuck you," so they went with a starrier, less nostalgic bunch of people for the death team. Probably a good call, actually, as it might have looked like Tom Cruise was working with his grandparents or something.
The original pitch for the TV show had Jim Phelps (or Dan Briggs, to be strictly accurate, but never mind) recruiting dangerous, fringe, criminal types to carry out these missions - terrorists (that meant something very different in the '60s) and international bad guys they could make a deal with in some cases. They were going to have a percentage of them be psychologically damaged, or maybe thrill-seeker types with no government connections at all. The creatives were very excited by this idea but unfortunately the network killed it deader than dead. The network's objection was that the very idea that the U.S. government would willingly hire or collaborate with criminals or dodgy people for any reason was ludicrous and unpatriotic and stuff. The early '60s were a very innocent time. LOL!
I'm not sure if it was by accident or by design, but that original concept gets an airing in the second film. Tom Cruise ends up performing all kinds of insane stunts in the later films but in the second film Ethan Hunt and other characters are portrayed as getting a charge out of the danger, which is a very interesting dynamic that they really don't have the time to explore properly what with all the slow motion doves and stuff. Everyone gives the second film a lot of stick, but there's some fun stuff in it.
The original plan for the movie series was to bring in a different superstar director for each one and let them go nuts expressing their own style in their respective entries in the series. Brian De Palma was a great guy to start with, John Woo was at his height at the time and would have seemed like a good idea as well. Tom was trying to talk Oliver Stone into doing one - his brand of paranoia would have been fun to see in a "Mission: Impossible" movie but Oliver probably didn't want to do a sequel to another guy's movie at that point in his career, which is fair enough. I would give my eye teeth to see a Paul Verhoeven or a John McTiernan "Mission: Impossible" movie, but I've no idea how far that strategy was followed. From the third film on the "Mission: Impossible" movies start to seem like part of a series, for better or worse. I kind of wish the last few hadn't been done by the same guy but they are a hell of a lot of fun to watch, aren't they? 😃

Peter Graves, who'd originally played the part, allegedly turned down the chance to reprise the role in the movie upon learning that the character was to be the villain, and other actors from the show walked out of the premiere of the movie in disgust.

@@jeffreynunya4716 Because having Jim Phelps be the mole is stupid, bad writing all the way. Might as well give Mr. Rogers a heel turn, it wouldn't be dumber.

TGV means Train à Grande Vitesse in french (or High-Speed Train in english). Based on the livery, the train could hit 300kph.
The TGV had the land speed world record already in 1981 before the Germans took it in 1989. In 1990, the TGV established a new record then went on for a second try and beat its own speed record for track trains with 515.3kph. It lasted 17 years.
Found more info about the train sequence in a french article:
The whole sequence was a mix of special effects, miniature model of the train, the helicopter and the landscape (1/8 scale) and real size practical elements filmed with a blue screen.
The skydiving fan Eric is talking about was able to blow at 225kph.
PS: This movie released the year I was born and still holds up to this day.

Did you guys ever continue with this series? The movies honestly do get better after the first couple entries. In fact, one of the great pleasures from the series is seeing how the movies stylistically change and find their footing.

My man Aaron over here completely stumped trying to remember the "Mighty" Ducks. But that's okay, because it's not nearly as embarrassing as the time I had that entire MIghty Ducks conversation before watching Ant-Man with my ex-wife, because I thought it was Michael Douglas in Mighty Ducks, not Emilio Estevez.

As an OG fan of the original Mission Impossible show, I was deeply annoyed by this movie back when it came out, I didn't buy the fact that Phelps could be a traitor. But as the years go by I can accept the movie series as being a reboot and the fact that it's a different actor playing the role, anyway. It's just that Peter Graves is so likeable as Jim Phelps in the series. Voight plays a more cold, manipulative guy. Cruise is basically the Martin Landau and Leonard Nimoy characters.

You're not TC's favorite reaction crew. (Maybe a close 2nd) Tom invited her to the premiere of MI-6 and met her personally after watching her react to his MI franchise. The Mission Impossible TV show was the inspiration. The original budget was $80M and box office was $457M. Successful revenue so the franchise was born.
