1983 was a great year - "Blue Thunder" was released, as was "WarGames" and the Commodore 64! :) This movie had it all when I was 13. Hook it up to your surround sound today and be exhilarated by it! They don't make movies like this anymore - and it was made without CGI!
Ten years previous was a helicopter chase movie that had absolutely breathtaking aerial action including a 500 vs an Aerospaciale inside a hangar. If you can find it, it's a TV movie called Birds of Prey, starring David Jannsen of The Fugitive fame. They managed to put some extra stupid stuff in it, but it still has a dynamic story and a Vanishing Point type of climactic scene. I tend to think Blue Thunder was at least partly a nod to Birds of Prey.
They don't make movies like this anymore. I have always loved the low-flying scenes...especially in-cockpit camera action. The blu ray remaster has amazing sound, a must have for any 80's movie collector!
1983 was such a great Year 1. Def Leppard released Pyromania with their top song Photograph 2. Blue Thunder was released, a movie with no CGI, all reality. 3. Bon Jovi debuted becoming one the best Rock Bands ever.
It's remarkable how they managed to shoot it all with either real helicopters or, in some shots, large scale remote control models. The action scenes are astonishing really. Today it would all be done with CGI and not look nearly as good.
That's one freaking cool helicopter, and I love Airwolf too, making it just impossible to choose. A teaming up between Blue Thunder, Airwolf, Knight Rider and Street Hawk would've been amazing
I have a fantasy lineup for an MCU-style connected universe of TV series. Start with Airwolf, then in season two they need ground support so they create the Knight Rider. Season 3 they need more muscle and recruit the A-Team, and the A-Team steal a prototype motorcycle drone called Street Hawk. The trailer would be KITT driving across the desert, then the A-Team van swings into convoy behind it. Street Hawk goes out in front, and we watch from in front as the line of vehicles bears down on us and Airwolf rises up from behind the others.
I miss the 80's really bad. This movie brings back a lot of different memories. At the time of filming this movie in Los Angeles, gang activity was really bad. A lot of cholas bused into my LAUSD schools from South Los Angeles and East LA magnetized me. No other women had their beauty. Smog was bad too. Several other great movies from within a year of this movie came out, Terminator and Night of the Comet. Buses were RTD. During this same time period and only five minute flight away by helicopter from where the filming of this movie was taking place, the birth of a hard rock band was slowly taking place that I would never have been interested in at the time as a ten year old. About four years after this movie, a band was starting to make noise on MTV and in the hallways of my junior high school called "Guns N' Roses." If you told me in 1987 that I was going to fall in love with this band for the next thirty plus years, I would not have believed you. Ok, now I miss the 80's really effin bad. Thank you for posting this segment.
My mother was working in downtown LA back in 1984 when they were filming the movie all over downtown with the helicopters and I might have said she saw that one day when she came home got off the work she saw the helicopter flying around over downtown it didn't look like regular news helicopters
I really think in that moment right before they opened fire on Blue Thunder, Murphy was going to try to convince them to help expose Blue Thunder’s true purpose.

Well I don’t think it was supposed to be used for normal patrolling. It was meant as an anti-terrorist platform for big events like the ‘84 Olympics. But, even so, it would be a hard sell in this day & age.

Somebody should bring this kind of show. No CGI, just actual helicopter stunts, only use RC Model for helicopter destruction scene.
Very doubtful nowadays especially after the Twilight Zone incident

Rumor is Chris Nolan is remaking this with Damon and Holland 👀
OK story but incredible areal shots and stunts. And Blue Thunder is bad ass-looking ! No fake CGI (see recent Midway).

Far to say. Blue Thunder helped start the super vehicle genre.
They don’t do movies these days with such helicopter stunts.
Blame the Twilight Zone movie incident

😊A movie from my childhood.
No CGI in this and real flying around down town. Incredible pilots, where they ex US services?
These dudes must have been Chopper pilots in Nam, this is the exact low flying they did
I saw this movie when it came out in 1984 just before the TV show airwolf came out I'm a huge fan of both blue thunder and airwolf
It's a damn good thing they weren't feeling grease or the Terminator at the same time as this particular shot about 2/3 through this one out of time.
Before Airwolf there was BLUE THUNDER
This is the only one movie which used the real choppers for the chopper chase scene
Terminator 2 as well
Ten years before was the TV movie that proved some incredible helicopter stunt work was possible. Birds of Prey, not the Nicolas Cage flick.
I would like to see on TV like it back in when I was a kid in 1983 when the movie was out

This was fun to watch. But all I can think about is the people below dodging all those bullets as the fell over the city.
It's Los Angeles they're used to dodging bullets on a daily basis regardless
