There are not many actors now that have the confidence that Clint Eastwood had. Yes I know it's acting, but he had a presence on screen that made you in awe of him instantly. You knew he was in control of that environment.............

Only the person in the captains seat can steer the airplane on the ground with a little steering wheel to his left, so the copilot would have figured it out when Clint said "put us in take off position" as only the captain can do that.

Listen to the engines - he's revving them up, then down, then up while on the runway. The terrorists didn't realize that he was messing with the thrust lever. Taking off requires full thrust and continuing down the runway. The first officer realized Callahan was about to enact his plan, revving up the engines. He knew sooner or later, they'd run out of runway, have to circle back, and they'd know he was never going to take off.
Back in the eighties I worked in a UK video rental store and loved all the Dirty Harry movies. This apart, from the original one, was my favourite. Clint Eastwood was so cool and had an amazing screen presence.
