Clint Eastwood. One of the greatest actors of all time; regardless of westerns Dirty Harry movies, etc. He was so busy making movies that one has to wonder how he found time for anything else. Clint and I have grown old together!
It's not so much the line as the direct cut to the door with Clint walking out in his pilot's uniform. We see his suggestion immediately, approve, and then look forward to the resolution--all within seconds. Great writing and direction.

Only the person in the captains seat can steer the airplane on the ground with a little steering wheel to his left, so the copilot would have figured it out when Clint said "put us in take off position" as only the captain can do that.

Listen to the engines - he's revving them up, then down, then up while on the runway. The terrorists didn't realize that he was messing with the thrust lever. Taking off requires full thrust and continuing down the runway. The first officer realized Callahan was about to enact his plan, revving up the engines. He knew sooner or later, they'd run out of runway, have to circle back, and they'd know he was never going to take off.

What always struck me about this scene was the first officer and navigator sitting absolutely still as Callaghan went into action, which is exactly what professionals would do in that circumstance
I was on that flight, glad Clint turned up to save the day. Also glad the video has been kept for posterity. I understand that it has been much used to train air crew as to how to deal with hijackers.

I was on that flight, glad Clint turned up to save the day. Also glad the video has been kept for posterity. I understand that it has been much used to train air crew as to how to deal with hijackers.
Saw this movie in the theater on my first date ever. I knew Clint Eastwood was everything I could never be - tough handsome and cool.
