- "Blue Thunder," the 1983 American action thriller film from Columbia Pictures, directed by John Badham and produced by Gordon Carroll, Phil Feldman, and Andrew Fogelson, featured helicopters specially designed by Mickey Michaels. Rejecting existing designs, Michaels created the helicopters using French-built Aérospatiale SA-341G Gazelles. These Gazelles underwent extensive modifications with bolt-on parts and Apache-style canopies for the film.
Columbia Pictures purchased two Gazelles, serial numbers 1066 and 1075, from Aérospatiale for $190,000 each. The helicopters were then sent to Cinema Air in Carlsbad, California, where they were heavily modified. However, these alterations made the helicopters considerably heavy, requiring filmmaking tricks to create the illusion of speed and agility on screen.
Post-film and TV series production, both helicopters were sold to aviation salvage collector Michael E. Grube in Clovis, New Mexico. In 1985, one of the helicopters appeared in the pilot episode of MacGyver, featuring a different paint job, removal of microphones, the video surveillance package, and a change in the side number from "02" to "51."
Grube later leased serial number 1066 to a film company shooting "Amerika," an ABC television mini-series depicting Soviet occupation of the United States. The helicopters were repainted black with red tail stripes and numbering, and missile launchers were added to the pylons. After its return, 1066 was dismantled and sold for parts.
Serial number 1075 met a different fate, being scrapped in 1988. A third static display model used for close-up shots with actors was created but deteriorated over time and was eventually scrapped by 2009. The bolt-on cockpit of the original helicopter was once visible on the backlot tour of MGM Studios in Florida.

This was one of my favorite movies as a kid grow up in the 80’s. I literally wore that VHS tape out. Now I’m in my mid 40’s and I still watch that movie at once a year. Such a shame neither of the helicopters were saved.
I heard one was save by a collector
And one of them is in pcs. Laid around on a scrap yard...
It remains one of my faves too. Had the model kits years ago; built it but later gave it to my cousin.
Amazing to think that the writer of ALIEN, Dan O'Bannon, also wrote this film too!
A huge fan of that movie. I still watch it 2-3 times a year. (In whisper mode..;0.)
Outstanding JAFO!
I grew up in L.A., and I'll always remember seeing one of them occasionally flying around, while they were working on the tv series.
HERE'S MY FAVORITE HELI
THE GAZELLE. !
BEAUTIFUL AS BLUE THUNDER
PERFECT LOOKING MACHINE ❤
Agreed! One of the most beautiful Helis in the world. I also love the MH-6 "Little Bird."
My first supervisor when I went to work at Ryan Aeronautical in San Diego in 1984 worked on the conversion of these helicopters for their movie role. He said most of the stuff added to them was simply cosmetic to create the illusion of an attack helicopter. Ironically, the project we were working on at Ryan was the fuselage for the AH-64 Apache.
Now THAT is interesting.... considering how Blue Thunder had some of the tech that the Apache also has!
This was my favorite helicopter before Air airwolf
I remember seeing the 2 helicopters in Lincoln Nebraska sky's during the America movie filming.
My favorite movie of all time!
Yeah..same here ..love the 80'S
Of all time? Seriously
The French Helicopter is one the best aerobatic made. You can lookup an old UA-cam video of a stunt pilot doing shit in one. That would make most pilots never fly in one again..
genial amigo que buen reporte de ese bello helicóptero, BLUE THUNDER PARA MI ES UNA INPIRACION DE MUCHOS PROYECTOS . GRACIAS POR DAR RECORDATORIO DE ESTE GRAN GAZELLE.
This was favorite movie before airwolf comes out one year
One day the helicopter would be in military for a real mission over seas
After the movie, these helicopters were parked for several years by the LA Sheriff's aero bureau at Long Beach Airport.. I used to see them almost daily. They just sat there gathering dust. for about 2-3 years. They were unlocked as they were in a secure area. I inspected them thoroughly inside and out. They were pretty cheesy. One day they were there. The next day they were gone.
It's amazing what the prop people can get away with on film. Get up close and they look hand made.
Great video and Blue thunder was a great movie ⚡⚡⚡⚡⚡⚡⚡⚡ 🔵🔵🔵🔵🔵🔵🔵🔵 🚁🚁🚁🚁🚁🚁🚁🚁🚁🚁
😮😮😮😮😮😮 se estreno en españa a finales de 1983 y me encanto el helicóptero es un gazelle modificado y cuando la sacaron en video vhs la compré y más tarde en dvd y bluray
When I was a teenager in 84
I never understood how you could be the owner of one of these and then just let them rot away! So many people (Me) would of loved to see one of the Movie Helicopters up close and in person....charge $5 a head and you could of made millions.
Their demise was a shame
This too bad this no more Blue thunder like airwolf
Great. AI comment.
Apache ? Hughes 1975 to 1984 McDonnal Douglas 1984 to 1997 Boeing 1997 to today.. Low Observable windshields were the Army rave in the 80s AH 1 Cobra & OH 58 Kiowa - Fugly! really wasn't worth the bother and extra weight
This is too bad
The low quality tv-series with dumb face actors and boring episode, condemned this superbe copter to die. Unfortunately the original movie dont put missile launcer under the wings. When i watch AirWolf i think its nice copter look like a flyng dolphin with a ridiculous gun machines, i think is the "female copter" version, if compared with Blue Thunder...
