Well said, Sean. I've been shooting for 45 years. The first 35 with my trusty Olympus OM10 35mm. I was totally oblivious to all the photography chat on UA-cam until I bought a small digital camera at the start of 2013. The great advantage of film was the inability to assess each shot immediately after capturing it. I use my Fuji X100V because it's so convenient. My photography is for me and I don't feel the need to share it, explain it or have it critiqued by others. Is every photo that I take a masterpiece, hardly ( it took me well over ten years of shooting film before I took a photo that struck me as being anyway good - and even then it was a spur of the moment shot to finish a reel that I thought nothing of until I saw the developed article). I love that photography embraces such a wide church of participants, each with our own motivation and favoured camera manufacturer and/or system. Life is imperfect so I take it as a given that captured images can also be imperfect. For me that often adds a reality to the image. You won't be surprised to know that I shoot jpeg because raw and computer screens loaded with Lightroom aren't my thing. For what it's worth I enjoyed your photos of Ireland. For me they came across as having been taken by someone wanting to capture memories, not technically perfect images, and are all the richer for that. Thanks for posting & I look forward to seeing more of your content.
I’m a proud owner of a Fuji X100 V and it’s true! It’s soooo f’cking difficult to find it brand new right now! It’s crazy! I f’cking love this camera sooo much!!! I’m not kidding when I say that even if I buy a newer model later I’m planing to keep this one with me for decades and something tells me this camera is going to age pretty well.
Thank you for this video, Sean - I have found myself in the same rut of not wanting to take photos or post them because they’re not Insta-perfect or they don’t live up to my (way too high) expectations. It’s nice to know professionals like yourself deal with the same insecurities. Your content is always so inspiring and I look forward to watching your videos. Do you have any books about photography that you recommend? More interested in instructional/technique/philosophy than just books of photos (which usually make me feel like I’ll never measure up!).
Thanks Sean, I couldn’t have said it better. It gets depressing trying to get the perfect photo, instead of capturing life around us. I have the mighty tome of Magnum photos and what a joy they are to browse through. Where would us humans be without the documentary photos. Thankyou for putting my life back into perspective. Recently I have been going through my 60 yr old collection of black and white negatives, and using the cyanotype process to print them out. What joy this has given me to see my family again in blue and white those everyday meaningless photos to anyone else evoke such happy memories, and that is what street photography does, not those endless long exposures of the sea and rocks, but people and places. So once again Thankyou from an elderly lady who loves photography but often looses her way.
I so love your comment, Gill! My wife and I are avid amateur snappers and have introduced our (soon to be ten year old) grandson to magic of photography. Your catalogue of negatives and developed images are a rich seam of family history for all to enjoy. I hope you continue to enjoy your photography for many years to come.
A much needed video! I do love the documentary side of photography. And a great reminder that it's okay if every picture we take isn't perfect Thanks, Sean..
After years shooting with professional cameras and looking for the perfect photo everywhere, I took a moment and I boought a Fujifilm Finepix x100 (the first one). Now I own two Fuji cameras. I fell in love straight away and I wanted to try because I was curios about the Film Simulation. The more I use it the more I feel free.. free to shot anything I want, without rules, it reminds me why I started my journey with photography, the need to explore, learn and see the world with different eyes. I think every photographer should't stop to experience this, let's take a break and remind ourselves why we are here.
Man you tell it like it is. I bought my 1st generation Fujifilm X100 in 2011 when it came out because I was instantly in love with the concept of having a mirrorless camera with a hybrid viewfinder. Even though I am working professionally with much newer and "better" cameras I still love using my X100. The X100V is the first newer generation that is tempting to me but I shot so many great memories and so many great photographs with my old camera I just can't bring myself to exchange my X100 for a X100V.
I was in the same boat up until a couple of days ago. I bought the X100S when it came out, took it with me everywhere and to many countries and have many photos/memories with it. Over time the sensor and finder have gotten dusty, the batteries, even the new one I just bought don‘t charge properly, so it had stayed in the drawer being sad. I got lethargic and found an X100V for a good deal in the local ads, now I have a camera that honours the X100S that I dearly loved shooting with. Like an homage to it‘s retired older brother. Can‘t wait to take it out on it‘s first shoot!
I loved this video, it brought me back to why I am interested in photography, it was about documenting my life really. But the thought of editing etc I kind of got put off from all forms of scrapbooking, but yeah - I definitely want a camera that is small and compact, decent quality and to focus on the moments . There was so much I took away from this video I’m just not able to get it all out but really enjoyed this video and I will check out the Lisbon video! ❤
Thanks for such a refreshing video. Photography & videography is an art form, that is without restriction and a form of self expression. The sooner we realise this, the sooner we are able to embrace our own style and creative flair and not pigeonholing ourselves into what everyone else is doing:).
Great video! I got my x100v a few months ago and have fallen in love with photography again. I’d love to take mine in a trip like this! I still have days where I don’t love the photos I take because the edits don’t turn out the way I want but you’re right, embracing the documentary side is just as important. Great video!
Wow that’s crazy! I was just in Ireland too. I brought my dslr / canon rebel eos t6 and took “bad” photos with my iPhone 6. All it mattered to me was that I gather pics of things that I saw that made me remember the memories and be able to share with others. Even if it’s slightly blurry, out of focus, or even not the right angle - it was still lovely.
Wow wonder why his videos were not recommended to me lately, i had to search and find this one. I also did that last year. I got an Instamax and just take photos in the moment. I could print them out, but i know i will want to edit it and nit pick. So that camera is a reminder to live in the moment and enjoy the imperfections because that's what made it a good memory
Oh man I loved it. You pointed out some topics I struggle with the most sometimes, especially shooting not to take amazing stuff, but just document my trip or my daily life. And the reason why I was thinking about the Fuji, was exactly to take it easy and small. But I think I to go first with a compact lens for my Sony, rather than buying another camera. Like a 28mm f2 or similar. Anyway, great video man, I love the work you do on YT!
You're always covered (for the most part) if you shoot in RAW The only time that I've used jpeg is when I set my camera in error I agree about documenting the moment for posterity 📷👍
This is a most honest, informative video dealing with feelings about photography as a use to be a rewarding experience and inspirational, creative hobby. Magic is gone. Swallowed by a flat black hole sitting in everyone's pocket or purse: Mobile phone. It drained creative energy, precious time and privacy. Everything shared, everything filtered, everything the same. Done..
i’ve been looking for the x100v but it’s sold out. i dont really call myself a photographer, but i love ART and have been thinking about getting into it just for the documentation purpose as well.

Mobile phone is probably the best documentary camera right now, because they’re so accessible and create great images. I like having a dedicated camera for it though, just makes the process a bit more romantic. Good luck on your journey Jay!
Hi, thank you for all these videos, and also the ones on Skillshare. I have a Fuji X100T, and although I Iove it, I do have a problem with it sometimes not focusing properly, or at all. It seems to be a switch I must inadvertently change which makes this happen, as these times, I cannot physically focus, auto or not. What is wrong??? Maybe someone in the comments has this camera and knows what I’m dong wrong. I’ve had it for years, and still can’t work it out!
Thank you for your interesting thoughts on photography. I'm a happy 100V owner too. A comment on the film simulations. When I am not sure which one I should use, I shoot both raw and jpg. When I connect the camera to the PC, I can edit the raw file with FUJIFILM X RAW STUDIO and convert it to any simulation thats present on the camera and also fine tune them.
lol just got back from Iceland and I mainly shot on my x100v with a bnw recipe. waiting to reset my mind before I review my photos. I find it better to wait a while before you review photos.
Not quite the x100v (which I'd love to own!) but for the purpose of unobtrusive documentation I recently picked up a RX100V and it's got me taking so many more photos "imperfectly" compared to how I'd approach using my A7III
Two questions: 1. What is that neck strap at 1:30? (I've never seen a camera carried like that and I think it's brilliant. 2. Where'd you get your socks at 2:02?
Hey Riley! I’m not sure of that strap, it came with my buddies vintage film camera. I think it’s specific to that camera. The socks I bought at a random skate shop in Bali which is unfortunately gone :(
Such a relevant video for me as I have an x100V on backorder and I CANT WAIT to get it, eventually lol I appreciate the nice photos of Davenport and I think Bodie? You must live near me =)
I’ve been feeling the same. I hate taking photos these days because every time I push the shutter button I put all my hopes into a perfect insta worthy photo. I lost my passion for photography because of it all. Now I’m selling my canon and planning to take a break.
Instagram and suchlike are just a place to make you think everything is perfect when in reality many are staged, some are retouched, other took a long time to be at this level and the photographer shot hundreds and hundreds of photos to be that good. You're putting too much pressure on yourself thinking "you have to take the perfect photo every time". Take with you daily a camera that you like, take photos and focus on the moment, the composition. But don't peek, don't look at the photos when you put them on your computer, just forget about them for weeks, months or even more. And maybe after that period when browsing your photos you'll find a couple of good ones, you'll even want to print those and hang them to the wall. Selling your gear and taking a break might make you sad, like you're missing something you really like. It's gonna hurt if you truly love photography. Just keep doing it but do it for yourself not the short-lived insta fame where everyone has a 5 seconds attention span.
@@REMY.C. hard to do when you shoot portraits and promise a 2 week turnaround for clients. That’s why I quit. I don’t take photos for anyone but myself now. dude you're the goat, just drop in once in a blue moon, make a banger video that does great and then disappear loll. PLS stay consistent I live your content/work
I use to have a X100s wich I sold, and I'm still regretting because I did a tone more pics that with much better cameras. Actually last week I was speaking with my wife to buy an X100V because I miss that feeling so much!
Thank you for the video Sean, you are very inspiring in generall and touching important things here. I agree that nowadays with instagram perfect images we sometimes loose the joy of what photography itself should be. It's easy to compare yourself and not be satisfied but finding a joy in just simply in having your camera with you everywhere you go and documenting those special moments with people around is really valuable. I also got my first Fujifilm recently btw and must say it's a different photography:) have.so much fun with it!
Thanks for that video! Just a few days ago I had quite same thoughts. Especially because in Moscow, where I am living, it's autumn now and most of recepies unusable because of lots of rain and clouds in my city, colors look disgusting out of camera. And I was wondering if fuji's magic color science works in countries far from seaside and with lots of haizy days in a year?) Now I turned off all the recepies and shoot only with Pro Neg hi and that's it) also I began to notice that my x-pro3 begins a bit slow and stupid when receipt is on. Is it ok?)
Hey Denis, I think so! There’s a lot of great European photographers that shoot in cloudy overcast settings. I think you should try and lean into the moodiness of the seasons out there. Don’t try to bring out the colors if they’re not there, just embrace the gloom and let that play a role in your photos. I don’t know a specific recipe off the top of my head for this, but I recommend experimenting a bit
Nice Video, like it. I think, those 1000 recipe keeps me away from buying this camera. I am super happy with Leica q2. Not much to change here, its just simple: shoot with it.
Strongly disagree on the "social media worthy" thing. We make social media, we share what we feel like sharing, plus these photos of yours are more than great. I personally love the whole lo-fi thing, like images shot on Holga or other "cheap" cameras or even diy cameras. Anyway, seems like you had a great trip. Thanks
It’s the Kodachrome 64 from Fuji x weekly. Forgot to add it into the vid. Here’s the link! fujixweekly.com/2020/05/27/my-fujifilm-x100v-kodachrome-64-film-simulation-recipe/
I could research this on my own but wondering this camera does not have a zoom is that right❓I think it’s refreshing to not have perfection in the photos, a lifetime ago before so much editing, those are the photos I love to see in books etc. is it ever a good idea to get one from eBay, even a used one? Thanks for your input
Correct, there is no zoom with the x100v. It’s a fixed 23mm lens (35mm full frame equivalent) which is my personal favorite focal length. I purchased mine used from Japan on eBay. I recommend buying from Japan as well, the sellers are typically quite good.

Glad you found a steal there man! It’s a great site, and they check everything thoroughly. If you haven’t purchased it yet, do you mind using the link at the top of the description?
They’re in focus, perhaps a shallow DOF in a lot of them. The black pro mist softens out the highlights quite a bit as well. My intention with this camera is not to capture the most crisp images possible, it’s a stylistic choice. However, they are in focus
It's definitely an overrated camera tbh but it is aesthetically pleasing* the film recipes aren't as good as my custom Lightroom presets I've spent years making though. I like the in camera ND filter and the OVF. But honestly I grab my Sony a6000 more because it's even more compact and I like a solid shutter CLICK. I bought the brand "squarehood" mk III but it doesn't fit any of my 49mm filters. 90$ for the thing and it doesn't even work.

dude you're the goat, just drop in once in a blue moon, make a banger video that does great and then disappear loll. PLS stay consistent I live your content/work
lol cheers man, that's been the recipe so far haha. Looking to make more videos soon here! Got one coming out this week
Nice video! Came across you via Skillshare. Yes pls upload more Fuji content. Keep up the gd wrk my man.
Appreciate the support Dave, thanks for the love buddy!
„Bad photos“…
Those pics are way more beautiful and honest than 95 % of the „insta worthy“ ones.
I agree, especially after giving them some time. I’m pumped on them. Thanks for watching!
Nice video but I can’t find this camera anywhere. Is there some production issues?
Where did you get that green strap 😍
Not me looking at your pictures and saying OK these pictures are awesome what is this guy talking about lol great work brother!
Haha much love Anthony thank you my man.
Bro please make a video about your moody nature style... Really like your green
Hey man, I’ll definitely keep that in mind! Specifically regarding editing, or the entire process?
I use to have a X100s wich I sold, and I'm still regretting because I did a tone more pics that with much better cameras. Actually last week I was speaking with my wife to buy an X100V because I miss that feeling so much!
You took some great photos Sean
Thank you Zanskar, appreciate the love man!
Exactly what Manny Ortiz said, and no, your photos are not bad :D
Nice Video, like it. I think, those 1000 recipe keeps me away from buying this camera. I am super happy with Leica q2. Not much to change here, its just simple: shoot with it.
Q2 is epic. I would really love one of those. Definitely a camera I plan to pickup in the future, Lowkey waiting for the Q3
Thanks
The first 20 seconds says it all
Thanks for watching Jaime 🙏🏼
Wich of the Kodachrome recipes did you use?
It’s the Kodachrome 64 from Fuji x weekly. Forgot to add it into the vid. Here’s the link! fujixweekly.com/2020/05/27/my-fujifilm-x100v-kodachrome-64-film-simulation-recipe/
what kind of strap do you use?
What is a good camera for a beginner
Any beginner series DSLR that costs $500-$1k I’d say :)
Somehow it's now available at one of the stores nearby. Should I go for it?
If it’s available definitely go for it!
Totally relate to what your saying
You photos were great. Might be time for another dalton insta or VERO account focused on the Fuji.
Thanks John, I actually have another IG account @analogsean. Will have to post some of the images there
I could research this on my own but wondering this camera does not have a zoom is that right❓I think it’s refreshing to not have perfection in the photos, a lifetime ago before so much editing, those are the photos I love to see in books etc. is it ever a good idea to get one from eBay, even a used one? Thanks for your input
Correct, there is no zoom with the x100v. It’s a fixed 23mm lens (35mm full frame equivalent) which is my personal favorite focal length.
I purchased mine used from Japan on eBay. I recommend buying from Japan as well, the sellers are typically quite good.
@@seandalt thank you so much for the quick reply. I had a goal to finish photography school at a local university by the age of 60. I am one to say it is never too late to begin something new. I have much to learn but love the journey. @bethannagrace
Happy shooting kind Sir📸
Try a 24 x24 challenge.
24 consecutive photos, no deletions, no edits... just 24 images from your day. Like 24exp film.
It makes you work for every image.
Let me know how you get on.
I really like this idea. I think I might do one photo per day for 90 days
@@seandalt I'm one month away from doing one photo per day for 1000 days. 😅
what is a recipe?

5:04 rupiah ya bang yak
Ahem..... the X100V does not take 'bad photos' ;-)
Sean thanks for the MPB reference, found a lens $80 cheaper. Steal.
Glad you found a steal there man! It’s a great site, and they check everything thoroughly.
If you haven’t purchased it yet, do you mind using the link at the top of the description?
@@seandalt Yes definitely. I have not bought it yet, but I will use the link to buy the lens.
Sorry But ,,,,,,, It appears that the photos all look soft ... OUT OF FOCUS .......
They’re in focus, perhaps a shallow DOF in a lot of them. The black pro mist softens out the highlights quite a bit as well. My intention with this camera is not to capture the most crisp images possible, it’s a stylistic choice. However, they are in focus
:)
The X100V is every bit as good as all the other cameras, often better. All depends on who is using it. Check out JerredZ.
It really is, such an epic camera! Thanks for commenting 🙏🏼
