Yo! That morphing shot at the beginning with all the different lens hood/cover options was SWEET! I've had my X100V for a couple years now as well and by far the thing I've iterated on the most is the lens hood / front-aesthetic! That morphing transition between so many options is SO on point for what the experience of owning this camera is like 🤣 so rad!
I’ve had one of these for about 2 years as well, and for that period it has been my only camera (other than some film ones). I love it, and haven’t regretted paring down my kit to this and the conversion lenses. I did go out and get a barely used X-T3 and some lenses for astro, landscape and wildlife shooting, but on the current trip that I am on in Massachusetts, it has gotten near equal use as the X-T3. It’s a brilliant camera, and would highly recommend to anyone (if you can find it).
Crazy to think this has been out for two years already. I grabbed a black one from Kenmore Camera a few weeks ago, and they currently have a silver one in stock. I desperately wish Fujiflm would make a fixed lens GFX version of this camera.
This really shows how much you love this camera as a TOOL. Not only you've talked a lot about the camera, but you also stated how much you understand its ups and downs yet you feel content more than just settled.
My favorite things are in order. Image quality, Button and body layout, lens, ND filter, leaf shutter, screen, size, and video Quality. Things I don’t like. 2.5mm Jack, only 10 min record time. Battery life isn’t bad but can be improved.
To avoid bokeh distortion just use electronic shutter, no need for nd (unless you're shooting under led lights). You can freeze fast motion and have pleasant bokeh this way.
FYI Benj, it's pretty buried in the manual (Ken Rockwell mentioned it a few times in his user guide too I think) but the X100V's max shutter speed changes depending on the aperture. (From p.147): "the maximum shutter speed varies with the aperture, from 1/2000 at f/2 to 1/4000 at f/4.5" If you attempt to go beyond that max shutter/aperture combo, even in manual mode, while set to Mechanical Shutter only, the shutter speed number on screen/in EVF should go red and while it'll still take the shot, you will get the weird motion-blurred bokeh all around the outside of the frame (center should be fine though). Oddly enough, playing with this just now lead me to find a bug in the X100V firmware. If you set the shutter to M+E and set 1/4000th + F2.0 (beyond what the physical shutter can do), it'll take that shot with Electronic Shutter. That's fine. If you turn the flash on though, now even though you're in M+E, it has to use M, not E (flash doesn't work with electronic shutter)... but it still doesn't turn the shutter speed red! Seems like the code for "Is this shutter speed too fast" is getting a "nope!" because of "M+E is on, so it'll use E" and not realizing that the flash being on means it will actually have to use mechanical. That's a bug! Just for background and/or others reading: I think the technical premise is that the physical leaf shutter can't actually open up "all the way" at the speed of 1/4000 - it's too much distance to cover in that short of time. So instead it can only open the shutter about half-way... which is fine if the aperture isn't opened up past half-way either. As long as the aperture is stopped down a bit, the shutter can (lazily?) not open all the way up and no light would be lost. When you force the camera to shoot at 1/4000th with F2.0 (or anything smaller than F4.5) I think we end up seeing shutter interference in the bokeh - they look like motion blur sort of because they are; the motion of the shutter blades not fully getting out of the way directly in line of the path of light that ends up hitting the sensor. It's honestly surprising that there isn't actual vignetting happening around the edges either!
I liked my X100f and it brought me into the X-System which grew extensively in the years after it got it. But I never got to love it because I disliked the lens: Sharp in the center, good in the corner but not meeting my standards in the field. It suffered from a wavy focal plane which in the meantime I found several sources to confirm. For large prints of landscapes a definitve showstopper in my book. Then came the X100V and the moment I knew it had an improved optical formula I knew I had to have it, preorded it, and I wasnt disappointed! With some other kinks removed from its predecessor the X100V is simply a joy to use and can do everything you could ask from a camera this size and concept with a 24 MPix sensor. It's no surprise to me it is constantly on backorder. Simply love it and I would put it on one level with my trusty Nikon FE2 which I also consider one perfect camera within its concept and also went for crazy high prizes after beeing discontinued by Nikon in 1988. And the WA-Conversion lens is also great btw.
Awesome insight!..if I ever get a Fuji it would be an iteration of this model for sure! very practical "everyday camera" from when I am not working and shooting with my Sony's..lol at this point yes is so difficult to come by, the price point on some I am not willing to spend on that on the "resell" market prices..and it has been a couple of years..so myself I am just gong to wait for the Mark VI hopefully..it will be release in the next year or so..lol the V is awesome from what I have seen and reviews and people that actually own it..and I can only imagine what a new Mark VI would be.!
Great review, Benj. I am the same as you - I have owned the X100V for 2 years and absolutely love it, however agree with some of the annoying things you mentioned (however I didn't realise the quality of the bokeh in the shutter speeds you mentioned). In addition sometimes I've accidentially touched the screen and changed the focus point, or there is a function that cannot be set or changed because eye detect is on (such as Photometry or flash). That's annoying. The lens cap is a bit annoying and I worry about losing it if I go to shove the camera back into my camera bag. Apart from that, I have taken some wonderful photos - certainly the ones that amaze my friends and family are the candid shots done with a film simulation as SOOC's at parties and gatherings and people state "wow, that looks so cool!" That is a good feeling 🙂
The only thing I would change on my x100v is to have it with a 40mm equivalent instead of 35mm for the main lens. I prefer the 40mm look better. Other than that I think you did a great job reviewing it. The quiet leaf shutter and high flash sync speed are nice too.
The app works for me about 10% of the time. So frustrating for something that is necessary for this type of daily carry shooting. As long as the app has been around it should be much better.
Nice little review and totally agree on everything. I didn't know about the hype of this camera.. I got mine in mid 2020 for I think $1450 (black by the way). Wasn't expecting the back orders and $2k+!
Ironically, I just sold my V to return to the F, after about 2 years... I love almost everything about the V, but I really struggled with two things (both related to personal preferences: 1) The eye-detect sensor really doesn't play well with my sunglasses. The F is measurably better, and the X-T's are better again. 2) I really don't get on with the joystick/touchscreen interface. I shoot OOC jpegs, and I need to change WB regularly (I find manual WB makes a big difference for the Fuji OOC). I just find this a lot easier on the F than the V. Both those elements combine to make my experience a bit worse. I often found myself frustrated by the V.
Try this to make the app more reliable: Hit "Play" to go into playback mode. Now hit the top Function button, the one to the right of the shutter release; this starts wi-fi on the camera. Now, on your iDevice, go to "Settings" and connect to the camera's wi-fi network. Now, on the iDevice, launch the app. Now you can view and download pics. Once I got this working (as I recall, I might have had to "pair" the camera and the phone the first time), it works every time, simple. (Well, update, I think iOS 16 is not playing nice with the app, so don't listen to me...)
I hesitated so long to get this camera but honestly, it is probably my favorite camera ever. I love my Sony a74, but this little guy is such a powerhouse in such a small package and I can just take it anywhere. I looove it. Great review Benj! Also, you have kind of convinced me to get myself a little kodak ektar h35 hahah!
Nice review Benj. I have the x100f and thought about upgrading to this one. The main thing that prevents me from using it more is the autofocus is pretty bad. Definitely a fun camera though and doesn't feel like "work" when I use it.
Thx Benj for sharing your longterm experience on the X100V. Due to YT I would really like to try out this Fuji camera line up out, but as you mentioned looks like the X100V is backordered on the entire planet. I will properly pre order X100-6 when it launches in 1-2 years, because until then the X100V might still be backorderd :D
Love playing with the film recipes. Gardens done in miniature are beautiful. Bought colored filters to play with. If I could do memes, I’d have a person carrying the camera and a backpack full of batteries. Truly HATE the grayed out items in the menu. Change one thing and 10 go gray. They are connected like a spider web.
Ok so I've been using mine pretty much non stop since I got my hands on one back in February. The few downsides: turning on the flash on/off takes a LOT of clicks/manipulation and I hate it. Sometimes I need to move between different settings and it takes so much time. It's pretty obvious when you compare to all the other things/settings you can change manually and so easily such as aperture, ISO and time of exposure. I HATE IT. The Fujifilm app is bollocks... It does kinda work once in a while but it's really annoying. EXCEPT THAT. EXCEPT the two small things I've said... It's a camera that made me fall in love with photography again. And I'm saying that as a portrait & commercial photographer with 15 yrs of experience. I love it so much. I carry it pretty much non stop with me and yeah. That's it. If you can afford one or if you're lucky enough to find one quickly, I would say just go for it. You won't regret it.
Amen on the app. It's terrible. I too have had my X100V for a couple years. I absolutely love it. My biggest complaint is the focus mode switch. It is sooo hard to flip to continuous without overshooting. Is there a secret that I don't know about? :)
the flash is tiny, but the x100v has a leaf shutter, so you can use the flash at 1/4000 to kill the ambient light and the flash still provides some fill. it is amazing to use in bright sunlight; pretty useless otherwise.
I get through a whole day of shooting even while traveling with two batteries no problem whatsoever. This camera incentivizes to slow down a bit anyways so if you don’t burst through the day the battery life is fine.
I love using my X100V for little camcorder style family videos but I HATE that the mic pics up the focusing of the lens. I don’t want to use an external mic for those grab and go moments
14:23 I use the new fuji firmware feature of manual focus but push to focus… so I guide the focus point via the joystick then push to focus! Best of both worlds.
As much as I love to have one, it is impossible to get one brand new from the stores. And the used market are packed with greedy sellers who are selling them hundreds more than MSRP. So I decided to grab a XT5 instead. Fujifilm needs to invest more on production lines, they just can't keep up with demand on lots of their products.
Thanks for the video. I have been on the fence about this camera but think that is partly because it is so hard to get. BTW, the link to the strap doesn't take one to the strap but to the home page. I was ready to buy one but can't find it.
As always, thank you for the great video! I got lucky and bought my X100V earlier this year at BestBuy when they had it in stock for half a second. Couple questions for you: do you ever use Film Simulation modes and shoot jpg? And do conversion lenses make a big difference (I'm considering getting a wide conversion lens but not sure if it's worth it) ?
Quick question: I love my X100V too but I have a gripe that I sort of need to confirm with someone who knows their s**t. I enjoy the optical viewfinder but I struggle with the light meter - if I miss the exposure by a long way, for example forgetting my settings or leaving the ND filter on, the dot on the light meter dial disappears. It’s like “sorry, man, you’re way off so I can’t tell you what to do”. I often have to take it away from my eye, check all my settings and/or check the screen to see where I’m at (not the point of the ovf, really). I’m capable of shooting with a simple light meter on film cameras, using a v basic one on my phone, but this problem really bugs me. Have you experienced it? If not, what might I be doing wrong? Does it tell you somewhere that you’re way over or way under on the ovf? J
Loved mine but sold it. Turns out I'm a long lens type of guy. Hello Fuji 100-400mm. I do miss the floppy screen though. I shoot left eye so all cameras cover my face. Be lucky stay safe
I’m curious about how you approach dynamic range. Do you try to shoot at 640ISO? Do you stick to DR100 or go for more range or use D Priority? Also, do you use the digital tele at all? I’ve recently purchase one because I keep swapping between the 18 and the 35 and thought the x100v could sorta cover that without having to switch lenses while on trips.
Just curious, since you have a couple digital Leica M cameras, why you don’t use them for your daily work? I would think the benefits might outweigh the ..well, weight.
I can’t hand a Leica to someone to have them take a photo. If I pick up a kid and they kick my camera, I’d rather it be a $1400 camera than a $10,000 one ;) Close focus & autofocus for the fast moving littles is also clutch. I still use the Leicas for travel and all sort of other stuff, but the X100V is basically my fam-cam.
@@benjhaisch that makes a lot of sense. I use two canon R5’s for my work (commercial/ wedding photographer) and also have an M6 that I bring everywhere. I use it to document behind the scenes, life and at weddings (just a roll or so). I’m trying to decide if I want an x100v as my walk around or if I should use that money to upgrade my M-mount 35mm lens to something much nicer then the voightlander 1.4 classic.
Love your videos! I’ve watched every single video that you made about the x100v, I think I’ll get one. Here in Spain it’s easier to get. I only have one question, do you think that the quality and sharpness is good enough to make good quality prints (the biggest I would like to print is 120cm x 100cm) ? Keep up the great content! Thanks
I think that if you keep ISO under 3200, prints at that size should be fine. The grain will be noticeable though. IMO Fuji’s grain feels very film like, even in color. But at higher ISOs you’ll be loosing some detail at that size.
I have one. not sure what's the hype. I do appreciate its esthetics and engineering but as a creative tool I am finding the 35mm to be kind of boring after a while.
Big electronic store had some for sale a few days ago online. I regret not buying it. I could use it for a few months and sell it for more than I paid 😂
I’ve had mine since they first came out and I have only looked through the viewfinder one time just to see what it looked like. Every shot I have taken with it was done by viewing the scene on the LCD screen or by shooting blind.
For me this camera is a bit of a love hate thing. I love the looks and I wanna pick it up and bring with me all the time. What is a huge let down is autofokus - particularly continuous autofokus. It's really slow and I often miss shots. And the digital viewfinder is very low resolution. Another thing is that the lens is just ok. It's not very sharp wide open - at least compared to my Nikon S-lenses for my Z-system. (Perhaps an unfair comparison) I just wish the X100V performed at bit more like I'm used to with my Nikon Z7 II. (I know Leica Q2 would be the answer, but the cost is too high for an everyday-documenting-my-life-camera. So I guess this is as good as it gets at the moment.
@@benjhaisch can you share your autofocus settings then? I have the same issue with autofocus where more than half my shots are not in focus (albeit taking pics of a uncooperative toddler). To the point where I want to sell this camera for a sony

I’m not into cellphone sized cameras, so my most wanted feature is a 1.4 lens. I don’t care if the next version end up being bigger and heavier. I’m sure Fujifilm can handle a middle point design for that.
Those lens hood transitions at 0:54 are amazing!
Hey thanks!
@@benjhaisch but like… how??!!
Agreed! What a bonus!
I've been waiting for months for one to come available and I'm finally getting it in a few days, so excited!
Crazy to think this has been out for two years already. I grabbed a black one from Kenmore Camera a few weeks ago, and they currently have a silver one in stock. I desperately wish Fujiflm would make a fixed lens GFX version of this camera.
THIS ! THIS SO MUCH. A GFX sensor in a body "à la x100" and I'll be incredibly happy.
awww dang now you've made me want something that probably won't ever happen haha. Good idea though I would be all over that.
Dude, love the family photos, capturing the best life has to offer. Good video. I appreciate your take on the Fujifilm X100V. Thanks for sharing.
Great vid! You're so lucky to have this camera man. It's sold out everywhere! I'm waiting till its back in the market.
FYI Benj, it's pretty buried in the manual (Ken Rockwell mentioned it a few times in his user guide too I think) but the X100V's max shutter speed changes depending on the aperture. (From p.147): "the maximum shutter speed varies with the aperture, from 1/2000 at f/2 to 1/4000 at f/4.5"
If you attempt to go beyond that max shutter/aperture combo, even in manual mode, while set to Mechanical Shutter only, the shutter speed number on screen/in EVF should go red and while it'll still take the shot, you will get the weird motion-blurred bokeh all around the outside of the frame (center should be fine though).
I have a a7iii, and I’d love this little camera as a secondary body
I'm waiting for new model, may be VI or X200 to release soon. Wish Fujifilm adds sensor stabilization and fix overheat issue.
Nice little review and totally agree on everything. I didn't know about the hype of this camera.. I got mine in mid 2020 for I think $1450 (black by the way). Wasn't expecting the back orders and $2k+!
Ironically, I just sold my V to return to the F, after about 2 years... I love almost everything about the V, but I really struggled with two things (both related to personal preferences:
1) The eye-detect sensor really doesn't play well with my sunglasses.
You make a really great point abut the offset viewfinder not hiding half your face.
So sad that they are pretty hard to find these days :( Love your reviews, keep up the good work!
Thanks!
i have one $2k
I hesitated so long to get this camera but honestly, it is probably my favorite camera ever. I love my Sony a74, but this little guy is such a powerhouse in such a small package and I can just take it anywhere. I looove it. Great review Benj! Also, you have kind of convinced me to get myself a little kodak ektar h35 hahah!
Nice review Benj. I have the x100f and thought about upgrading to this one. The main thing that prevents me from using it more is the autofocus is pretty bad. Definitely a fun camera though and doesn't feel like "work" when I use it.
Ordered and patiently waiting for mine, hope it wont be more than a month of wait time
Great video! Is there anywhere I can find the settings you use on the X100V?! I love the way your images came out.
Hope to one day get one of these cameras. Thanks for introducing me to this song btw!
The best review video of this camera I have seen. Thanks.
It took 4 months to get mine.
Just put an order in at a reputable store and you will get one eventually.
I’m in NZ I have one on order will be here November 8 ,2023 I can’t wait . If I win a Lotto ticket I’ll buy a Leica q3 for the faster lens 😮
Thank you for the great tip about holding the camera so that more of your face and expression can be seen by your subject.
Music selection every video 🔥
Solid video and some great photos. I love capturing family 👌
wow your shots and that music are fantastic, cheers for sharing!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Other companies apps are quite damn good. Panasonic is good, but Olympus is extraordinary good on how easy it is to connect and transfer.
Great point about the offset viewfinder, makes me want to get an X-Pro3 or X-Pro4 whenever that comes out who knows when that will be
A potential X-Pro4 is something I’m actually really excited about.
What is that rounded-square lenshood at 0:56? Looks like a Leica 12526 Lens Hood
lovely shots, great video, i have the original x100 and i'm enjoying using that. :)
That shutter button is so tiny can you tell me which one it is as I’d like to get one? Thanks.
From squarehood actually!
I get through a whole day of shooting even while traveling with two batteries no problem whatsoever. This camera incentivizes to slow down a bit anyways so if you don’t burst through the day the battery life is fine.
Yeah, those straps look great. I haven’t seen those before.
I love using my X100V for little camcorder style family videos but I HATE that the mic pics up the focusing of the lens. I don’t want to use an external mic for those grab and go moments
can you take multiple shots with film recipies?
14:23
I use the new fuji firmware feature of manual focus but push to focus… so I guide the focus point via the joystick then push to focus!
Please! Where did you get that shutter button!!!
It’s from Squarehood!
Thanks for the video. I have been on the fence about this camera but think that is partly because it is so hard to get. BTW, the link to the strap doesn't take one to the strap but to the home page. I was ready to buy one but can't find it.
It’s on the homepage as well, just gotta scroll down :)
I do love that WCL-X100II ua-cam.com/video/GYSL5LY3rjw/v-deo.html
Flash works fine with lens hood if its a lens hood designed for that camera. (flat top)
Looking at some of your photos it looks like you're in Washington/Seattle?
J
I'm already invested in the Sony ecosystem so my Sony version of the 100V is an A7C with a Samyang 35F1.8. Not as cool looking but does the job.
I really hope they come out with an A7CII with some A7IV improvements. I'd probably be interested in that camera.
Great video ! Just ordered mine !
still have my X100S and love it
Subscribed for the BGM, good taste!
Wonder when will fuji announce the next x100 series camera. It has been almost 3 years since the launch of this current camera
I’d be surprised if it’s within the next year, but who knows
My trusty x20 does wonders, sadly battery life is a curse. I always have 5 spares for my sense of security.
Loved mine but sold it.
Turns out I'm a long lens type of guy.
Hello Fuji 100-400mm.
I do miss the floppy screen though.
I shoot left eye so all cameras cover my face.
Be lucky stay safe
Do you not use the film simulations? Big proponent for x100v is shooting jpegs. Love your presets, so it’s understandable 😁
I don't normally, but I'm probably going to do a video in the new year comparing presets vs film sims :)
How long do I have to wait to buy this camera!! 😭
If I pick up a kid and they kick my camera, I’d rather it be a $1400 camera than a $10,000 one ;)
Close focus & autofocus for the fast moving littles is also clutch.
I just wish fuji will make xpro4 with xh2's 40mp sensor & ibis & ofc all the other improvements.
@@60400 thank you very much for your reply! Very useful to have more than one opinion!
@@santiagoolloqui4161 you could definitely print that size. Especially if you use enhance details in Lightroom
Agreed! What I hate about this camera is that it's usually out of stock or inflated by 700 dollars.
This or Canon R5 if price not a factor?
Did I see the Squarehood mounted to the wide lens adapter? I was told they didn’t work together.
It’s a newer model
I have one. not sure what's the hype. I do appreciate its esthetics and engineering but as a creative tool I am finding the 35mm to be kind of boring after a while.
What’s your soft shutter button?
Hey Benj, what length of strap do you have for the green one that's in this video?
I believe it’s the 40
Hey what song is it in the sample photos section?
I actually have zero issues with the autofocus and the lens is as sharp as my Leica glass wide open… I’m wondering what I’m missing?
@@benjhaisch can you share your autofocus settings then? I have the same issue with autofocus where more than half my shots are not in focus (albeit taking pics of a uncooperative toddler). To the point where I want to sell this camera for a sony
How’s this vs the Gr3?
Great vid !
Would stay far away from Clever Supply. I bought leather 2 straps from them. Both had defects that were never addressed by the brand after emailing. Won’t be buying from them again. Stay far away.
Hmmm I’ve heard quite opposite things about their CS, but I’ll reach out to them for you. I’d be shocked if Todd wouldn’t rectify a reasonable issue.
I always chuckle when people say the battery life is garbage. I use a ricoh gr bruh. It's all perspective haha.
I adore these cameras. But please. Please fuji. Put a true manual focus lens on this with a focus lever, and a range finder. God please. Haha
sure, it's all relative, but would still be nice to have better battery life.
when the new X100V will come out?
No idea but my guess is not until the end of 2023 at the earliest. No need for them to make a new one when this one is still so popular that they can’t keep it in stock.
Thanks FP this! 🙏
How much better is the build quality on Leica M? Is it a night and day difference?
Yeah, I mean a Leica is made out of brass and significantly heavier as well.
