As a 10 year healing vet the things I’ve learned are as such:
    1. No one is going to blame you for dying to something they should have avoided. If they do they were toxic anyway and you can disregard their opinion. In fact, most tanks and DPS I’ve run with think it’s THEIR fault when they die even if it was straight up mine. It’s all perspective.
    2. ABC: Always be casting. What separates good and great healers is pure volume. If you ever feel like you’re waiting for someone to heal, start dpsing, crowd control, buffing, whatever you need to do to be on the on top of your gcd. Active casting time should be at least 95% of the fight at the highest levels.
    3. Don’t be afraid to use your cooldowns liberally. If the tank made a dodgy pull on trash it’s much better to use your cooldowns to save him then versus “saving it for the boss” or whatever. Cooldowns are relatively short and will make runs go much much smoother if utilized as much as possible.
Get out there and practice! You’re gonna die, your friends are gonna die, runs will be doomed, you’ll go OOM, your tank will get blown to shreds FORSURE, but nobody is gonna hurt you behind the screen for failing. Don’t be scared to try this amazing role. Healers basically do everything at a certain point. Good luck to all the aspiring pumpers out there.

I think videos have put pressure on players these days I never played tanks before ff14 and I've been playing gnb for my first tank and levelling a warrior up slowly when I want a change of class and I die all the time indont blame the healer was it him, did I get hit harder than I thought or by a skill I didn't catch as i was distracted by something else maybe, it's a game who cares failure is part of the learning curve for me amd when I go healer I will be more focused on healing and party survival than trying tondo massive amounts of dps as healers in tera used to do it all the time get so focused on dps they forgot to heal you half the time. Your a healer jobs kn the title put out any dots you have and then focus in the ho bars of players not monsters amd attack if youbhave the freedom to and only then so what if the boss takes an extra 30 seconds or 2 minutes to beat.

@@dikozapelio9034 Depends how new you’re talking about.
Generally, I don’t see people taking AoE damage intentionally. Usually, they mix up which mechanic or they seem to get focused on damaging. Some people mix up that certain attacks are avoidable, but the way they were looking, they didn’t see the location to avoid it (I.e. in HW The Vault, there’s a row of charging knights, but there’s a gap. You wouldn’t notice it depending where you’re standing if it’s your first time).
There’s also some major philosophical differences. Some try to follow endgame strategies, that if you have to stop damaging, you’re the worst healer ever, quit the game, jump off a cliff.
There’s another philosophy of general veteran players which is: did you get the job done and did the party make it?

It helps if you prioritize the people you are going to heal. The others have to understand they have to keep themselves alive. The worst case is a leach who keeps getting one shotted and is super salty about you not resurrecting them for the tenth time. This is a literal example I ran into on several occasions. Luckily, this is rare.

Honestly, I have the same problem when I tank. If someone dies or if I die I always blame myself unless someone did something *very* obviously dumb. The other day I died to trash mobs on Paladin and the whole time I was trying to figure out what I was doing wrong, but when the fight was over the healer apologized profusely for forgetting to heal. I told them not to worry about it because I wasn't doing very good either. I'm not saying this to say "look how nice I am" or anything like that, but rather the healer did a great job after that and I tend to think if you can take some of the anxiety off your healer they won't spend any brain power worrying about screwing up and they'll do better. Same for tanks or anyone for that matter. Besides, if they hadn't apologized I never would have known they let me die in the first place. They could've just not said anything and I would've kept thinking it was all my fault. They didn't know that but still. Also, I wasn't lying when I said I wasn't doing very good. I definitely made mistakes.

If anything is a mix of all parties involved. If i die and i don't know why, it's either A a lack of knowledge in the fight, B i didn't dodge the mechanic (which happens), C the healer didn't heal me fast enough (which happens as well), or D a little bit of everything, so yea it all evens out imo.

A tip for people getting into AST:
Your cards are more useful for some jobs than others. If the card you draw has a blue outline on the gauge, it goes to a melee DPS or a tank. If it has a purple outline, it goes to a ranged DPS or yourself/the other healer.

TL;DR: I'm glad to see someone echo the fact that you're encouraging learning first and optimize second, I've always read and found advice to push new healers to optimize right out of the gate, so kudos to the video.
I just wanted to say I appreciated this video. As someone who plays the role of a healer and who has been playing the role for the past three years in this game. It's nice to hear encouragement in trying the role without the mindset of immediately trying to optimize.
I've always seen advice to new healers that look like this: "If you have to cast a GCD heal, you're losing out on damage." And tbh, I have a reason to believe that's kind of why we have healers whether in PuGs or static settings who have the misunderstood fundamental of trying to optimize damage. Or rather, those healers who ONLY do damage, and no healing. There's no shame in throwing out GCD heals if it's necessary, you're not shit for casting something other than Energy Drain. Optimizing comes later through a ton of communication with a team.
Be vocal as a healer, especially with your co-healer if either of you feel something isn't right, this is a team game, we raid as a GROUP. Communicate and plan AS A GROUP and see what you can do together. A successful clear comes FIRST before optimizing damage. So yeah, this turned into a ramble but this video hit dif, and I wanted to just say good shit.

Can absolutely agree with this. I main DPS but really enjoy tanking and healing every so often. And sometimes, I have to actively remind myself to switch to the necessary mindset. I had it happen that I was the healer but my mind slipped off into the DPS mindset, so I just kept throwing damage out. I DID notice the tank getting low on health, eventually, with my mind going "Wow, the healer really should do something about tha- WAIT A SECOND! *hits oh-shit-button*"
Adapting to your role is important~

I certainly appreciated the work of every healer before, and now I understand just how it feels to babysit every member of your party lol. i generally at least keep an eye on the hp of my party and when it gets too low, which depends on the circumstances in the trial, dungeon, etc, I go into healing priority until they are at a safe level and keep my eye up as I go back to damage if I don't need to heal others

I recently picked up healing, needing to level WHM and AST in order to get my classes to 80 (SCH being leveled by Virtue of SMN). I found healing as a general principle, is not hard. But what makes it difficult is the reliance on other people. As a healer I encountered all the meme's. The Dragoon and BLM who stood in every AOE. The DPS that ran from a stack marker. The Tank that did wall to wall pulls but didn't know what mitigation (or self sustain) was. And that one DPS who is impatient so while you're fighting group A they run and agro group B and bring it back. The benefit of being a healer however is, you can punish these people. Eat the same avoidable mechanic a few to many times? You stay on the floor. Run and agro a mob while the tank is busy with another? I don't heal you. I, myself, am confident in my ability to heal non-high-end content now, but ultimately the downside I have for healing is, it relies on other people having some common sense. Which is an uncommon trait.

I kinda really don't like healing in XIV precisely because of the anxiety. I have a short attention span so managing battle mechanics as well as healing and doing damage has always been kind of hard for me. This is especially challenging with astrologian and scholar since you also hafta manage your cards and summons properly. Did most of ARR as a white mage, wasn't too bad, but as soon as heavensward hit, it just felt like things became a little too much for me, so now i mainly do dps and tank (plus red mage and machinist became my favorite jobs). Tanking isn't too bad, and being dps is pretty freeing as there's not as much responsibility. The most I can say is probably to research the battle or dungeon mechanics beforehand and maybe watch a guide so you won't have to guess what's coming next. Also, it helps to really pay attention to your skill descriptions as I found too late i had been playing bard totally wrong.
overall, the job options for healing also just don't excite me too much, but I am hoping sage will change that as the class looks flashy and awesome. Who knows, maybe I'll give healing another chance when endwalker drops.

Also raids are traumatizing when you don't have much experience on this field. I was at the point where I just shut down the in-game chat by fear of being insulted.
Useless to say that this video eases my stress a little. I'd like to try giving a shot again, when I'm strong enough to respond appropriately to critics. Or not respond at all when I'm able to see that I'm not entirely at fault and certain person don't want to learn. Then... Well they can die if they not adjust for once. :)

After starting XIV as a melee DPS, I became a GNB main a while back after finally deciding to get over the tanxiety. I've recently picked up SCH and been thoroughly enjoying getting to grips with the final pillar that is the healer role. Being able to pull an overzealous tank from the brink of death was when I started to fall in love with being a healer. And then planning my OGCD heals and Sacred Soil for each add pull in dungeons is addictive.
Even if I ultimately decide to become a full-time GNB main for high-end content, spending time as a SCH has equipped me with the tools to be a better tank, as I now have a much better understanding what a good tank and a bad tank looks like. *That is why I think it's a great idea for every tank to try out a healer job.* Seriously, it might make you a better tank!

As a returning player I always tell my party that simple fact when I am healing or tanking, especially if it's a dungeon I have not seen (at all or) in a long time.
That so far has negated every drama for me. As tank I usually also stop before pulling a boss to ask if there is something I should be wary about. But usually it's just "Don't spin the boss and DDR away with your tank'n'spank."
I did muck up a dungeon tonight by having not the tank in as target and blowing all my CDs in panic mode and watch him die anyway, since... you know, it all got cast on me. XD
I said it was my fault, which is true, and apologized. That was enough. That and the insta-combat-rez of course to stabilize my woupsie.
But everybody was super-chill about it.
And that's it really. People in FFXIV are very patient and relaxed and if you are not afraid to say you messed up and say sorry and sprinkle in a bit of good-natured humor and humility only the most vile and trollish of people will ever give you a hard time.
And those folks are absurdly rare in 14. Seriously.
You would have to look real hard and long to find somebody that is giving you shit after you apologized and took responsibility if you messed up.
The general answer I get is usually "Don't worry about it. It's fine. All is well. You're good."
I CANNOT overstate how much this is a factor in my decision to return, time and time again. I always know returning to 14 is a breeze because people are just that chillaxed.

One thing to add - at the start of a dungeon or trial, don't be afraid to say you're new to healing and open to feedback about how you can do better. Everyone wants there to be more good healers, and as long as you're willing to learn (and actually make an effort to learn from your mistakes, not just say you're "still learning" as an excuse to not give a shit), people will generally be helpful. That doesn't mean there won't be assholes, but overall it makes the experience much smoother.

@Nick Jordan It's for that reason I don't think I could heal with any job other than AST, those cards make all the difference. Rip the old system but they still provide consistent breaks to the monotony and being random there's always a little thought required, then if people die or have gimped dps in a certain phase or are about to blow cds you have to keep track to decide who gets buffs, then shit hits the fan and you have to keep doing all that while also keeping people alive. Great fun. AST cards may be my favorite mechanic in the game.
Tanking however just feels way too loose in FFXIV, I can't stand it. I did some tanking in WoW and it was quite satisfying to leap in and instantly snap aggro on everything, but in FFXIV there's an awkward delay to everything and it's so much worse for tanking because I'll aoe a group and they'll keep running past me for a second so I have to wait and make sure I actually got aggro, sometimes I do and sometimes I don't it's fucking irritating. Meanwhile I'll play a healer and watch tanks sprint through mobs without using any abilities, nearly die then all the mobs go to me for healing them then they pick 'em up after (usually) so maybe it doesn't matter but that's not the kind of experience I want to give my groups lol.

There's definitely a balance between not blaming the healer but also not blaming the person who died. I'm a healer main with 90 Sage and Scholar and running a Shadowbringers dungeon as PLD, and there was a Sage queued with a Mentor DPS in my party. The sage was probably new to the class and was barely casting heals at all. I ended up dying 2 times during the run and the second time the healer didn't realize I died and kept casting spells on the enemies. The mentor ended up yelling at me because I slightly overlapped the duration of 2 of my mitigations, and they explained that they had PLD level 90 and it was my fault I died. I had to resist the urge to tell them that I'm a healer main with two at level 90 including the one the healer was playing -- I would never have issue healing in a run where the tank overlaps mitigations in a simple main scenario dungeon. At the end of the day, I agree it's usually not the healers fault, but you should also take that concept with a grain of salt instead of blaming the person who died.

Being a tank, I can say that the worst healers are those that put their DPS over healing. Running into a dungeon today, I was at a level I don't have self heals for my paladin, so the healer kept doing DPS, only healing me when I was under 5% HP
I was fine with it if it would keep me alive, but instead I kept dying over and over because he refused to keep me above 10%
I asked him to put the minimum hp I had a bit higher to avoid burst damages, but he went toxic. Was my first bad healer case.
Apart from that, I love you healers you are all my best friends as a tank lol

I think this kind of thing is happening because SO many guides out there for healers put an emphasis on the fact that the healer should be DPSing as well, and not JUST standing there healing. Then a lot of these beginners (like myself before I quit WHM for RDM literally today) never really learn to heal because they’re so focused on trying to DPS and heal at the same time. Not saying you shouldn’t DPS on healer, just saying you should learn to heal efficiently first, then begin to incorporate DPS. Not the other way around like it seems many people are being taught. Either way sorry for your bad experience man, Tank can be just as stressful as Healer, y’all don’t deserve that stuff.

I hate it when my tank down to a tiny dot of hp before dying and still not receive any heals. I am sorry I have to pop my clemency, not that i don't trust their heal but they are making the tank insecure, when you make the tank insecure then is a fail as a healer. as someone that came over from WoW I really like how easy it is to weave dps into healing, but healing is top priority when you are a healer. Playing a WHM right now to get a feel for it, I used to play a discipline priest in WoW so once I get more dungeons memorized out I would not mind the shield healing, but till I get there WHM and reactive healing is the way to go. Plus, burning out my retinas with holy is fun lol. Also, I am starting to get why people are into a parasitic plant getting fed the precious. I have also gotten good at swiftcasting rez when people ignore mechanics. I have noted that dungeon memorization is high priority in FF14 since in the end game dungeons you really do not have time to just react to things before things kill you but it becomes much easier once you figure out the visual clues and patterns.

Not sure about how Sage will be, but SCH isn't too rough - nowhere near as thoughtful as disc priest. If you're like me, though, you'll feel right at home when you start the kit.
Scholar's shielding lasts for a whopping 30s, which is way more forgiving than PW:S at 15s. Plus, you get Selene/Eos which heals as you deal damage, so it can feel similar to your light Atonement healing (albeit permanent and 1 target at a time). You'll get something similar to bubble, but you'll trade your 60s for 30s in exchange for lower power.
It's easy to throw Physick (a weak, single target heal) in the trash, but I find it to be a useful spot heal tool, similar to SMend... as in, I'd rather not have to, but I will.
In truth, you probably don't need to learn the dungeons as much as you think you might. The mechanics can be learned on the fly if you're paying attention and, even when failed, rarely outright kill you. For Disc, I know how punishing it was not knowing a fight, typically because you'd lacked any real powerhouse group spells. In comparison, FFXIV's Scholar has a couple extra "things are going bad" tools to help you recover.

Whether you play as a tank or healer, I strongly suggest you level your Company Squadron and Trust System. Both allowed me to learn tanking without worry of being ranted at by toxic healers and dps.
Your Company Squadron will have most dungeons from ARR to Heavensward, and the Trust System will have most of the Shadowbringer dungeons (with the exception of the optional ones). If you do end up using the Trust System, I strongly suggest bringing Alphinaud as your healer.
The only odd time you will have to tank with real people will be Stormblood as there's no Trust or Company Squadron system in place, but either by then you'll know enough about tanking to do it with real people or you can just use the daily PvP roulette in combination with Heaven-on-High to get you from 60 to 70.

What I try to do is always run my first time through the dungeon with at least 1 friend on the team, ideally all friends. Then you not only get to experience the mechanics but you get the feel for how a dungeon is suppose to go when it's done with people who are good at their job. This is how I realize when people are being bad at their jobs in a dungeon and that it's not me in DFs. Like for example, one time, I was wondering why the mobs weren't dying fast enough and I almost run out of MP keeping the tank alive every other pull. I realized at the first boss, when the boss got to do his attack rotation TWICE when he was supposed to be DEAD before he got to his second time around, that it wasn't me OR the tank but the DPSs who weren't doing nearly enough damage to warrant safe room pulls (or anything else for that matter) who were at fault and I immediately stopped feeling bad.

Well since people might see this here are some tips from 4 years of white mage experience:
1)WHM is probably the best healer to start the game with since you don't have to bother with shielding and mitigations(at least not that much).
2)WHM allows you to recover from unexpected damage for example: If a tank gets tankbustered and is very low on hp you have 3 instant healing "buttons" to use Aflatus/tetragramaton/benediction in fact you can combo a cure into aflatus into tetragramaton and they will be in full health again ;)
3)While you do have single target healing WHM has 2 instant aoe heals that can help you refill all of your party's health really fast AND having access to medica 2 allows you to use it and you will be 100% sure that they will be healthy when they really need to.
4)If DPS classes dies to mechanics IT IS NOT your fault for not healing them, most of the times when you get hit by a mechanic you could avoid you get punished with a damage invulnerability that means someone didn't do a mechanic correct or didn't dodge the attack, don't panic, heal them normally and if by any chance you wipe, no worries you will try again.
5)When everyone has full health and no one is taking any damage you can use your dps skills, just apply your aero/dia and spam stone/glare, healers have some respectable damage numbers so you really help the team by dealing damage.Of course since your rotation is literally pressing 1 button you can focus your attention on other things like healthbars/mechanics etc.
6)You have a shield, use it when a tank is about to take heavy damage from tank busters, they will love you for that, trust me.
7)You are the only class that can kill your party members, there is a little good skill called "Rescue" where you can pull a teammate to you in order to rescue them......or... you could send them to their deaths by pulling them in a bottomless pit or a death zone and what can i say, it feels fun knowing that i can kill anyone i want if i truly desire it.
    8)Relax and have fun.
9)If a gunbreaker uses Superbolide when you use benediction let them die, they will learn.(memes must be memed)
People from NA data centers are very chill people from my experience and you will rarely find toxic players on easy content like story dungeons and trials.

I just started healing 2 weeks ago, fell in love and played healing class almost exclusively ever since.
I did have a couple of bad run ins with the 'oh so superior' mentor class.
It was the 4 man in the stormblood castle with me, tank and 1 dps being sprouts. Monk mentor kept pulling big causing the inexperience me and tank to struggle greatly in keeping him alive.
Then the dick had the audacity to hurl insults at us calling us noobs (which was true).
And since I don't chat at all, I expressed all of my annoyance with inaction.
No heal or res ever came his way till the end of the raid.
Naturally, he kept the insults coming but it sure was hell fun to watch him die again and again.

I had a healer blame themselves for resing me during an aoe phase but I blame myself for pressing "accept" too early :)

      @jamieanderson8308 3 роки тому +9

This is one of the most common mistakes new players make. The res has a minute to be accepted and if there is a large mechanic happening, just wait. There’s no point coming back to life to swallow some massive cleaves and immediately die again.

In fact, the healer *should* be rezzing immediately and then leaving the timing to you so that they can get Swiftcast back off cooldown as soon as possible.

You also have 6 seconds of invulnerability when you respawn in which you can move but if you don’t carry out any actions, you can’t be killed

Only recently started playing FFXIV and really enjoying playing healer for the most part, except those tanks that keep moving constantly and complain you aren’t doing your job (note to tanks not all or our skills are instant so we do need them to stay in range to heal at times). But overall I’m finding healers most fun to play

I think for me it just took a lot of trial and experience. WHen I started off healing as SCH? Nervous af. WHM? Ok this is the one people say is easy, so I felt better about this. AST? I was anxious about bc I've heard of the complexity, but by that time I had gotten comfortable enough with the role and it became my favorite of the 3!

I started to enjoy playing healer in exper dungeons because your average dungeon time lowers by alot.
There are to many "party needs to be 100% hp and I only need to heal" healers and you feel how much longer a dungeon takes with them.
So by playing healer by myself I can tell the tank to pull everything and then just holy spam the enemys down.

I would say don't worry about damage until you are comfortable with just healing in general then when you get that down start learning to throw in some damage. Learning to not blow all your mp is the most important rule of healing if you don't have mp that's when the wipe will come.

I used to play healer a long time ago and quit when I was told by Streamer Mr.Happy and dozens of other people the Healers are 100% DPS first and Healer second. I was actually kicked from groups doing roulette's because I wasn't DPSing when there was no need for me to do so and just healing. I also quit doing end game content as at the time the end game community was EXTREMELY toxic and would kick people and even just abandon raids after just one wipe.

There's times where tanks put healers in position where they just can't heal fast enough or have enough MP to support the team or in my case got teamed up with a white mage in a level 49 dungeon (forgot the name, it's the one with Gold lung damage overtime debuff) just now, whom solely focused on DPS till keep on forgetting to heal everyone (we got wiped at least 4 times) I literally had to keep on using Hi-Potions to keep myself alive.....
I too used main White Mage till level 50, if I were in that other healers shoes I would feel utterly offended to see people using potions when I'm around as it shows how incompetent I am as a healer (unless there's communication where I ran out of MP and need time to recover hence its ok to use potions) ...... but as a DPS (current Black Mage, I had to do it to keep myself alive)

I'm addicted to the Queue privileages. I usually only DPS anymore when I'm with friends. I usually know what kills me - like the DPS who runs AOEs into me, or my own stupid ass when I eat too much pain for breakfast. Still, I do love them blood lilies....
I didn't start with a god complex. I only wanted to help. But yeah, the pressure of "It's up to me who lives or dies" is a matter of perspective. It's either the weight of the world or that feeling of power when the dragoon tanks the floor for the tenth time and you're like "Sorry, the Monk is doing a better job of staying alive, I'll get you... eventually" But seriously, I love DPS who know their rotations and how to stay out of the bad. :) I used to get frightened by every AOE marker and prey icon, so I would run away or into the healer without realizing it. Healing helped me DPS better... and then I started maining Healer XD

I mean, that pretty much goes without saying haha. Just be patient with yourself, try not to do more than you're comfortable with. Also ask the tank ahead of time to keep it slow...two pulls are just enough to make sure you get comfortable with everything. Then once you've had enough practice and exposure, you'll be begging the tank to pull wall to wall haha.

I'll admit that when Sage came out, I probably made the worst decision of deciding it would be the first healer I'd run. First dungeon I ran was with randos. Not a good time.
Did absolutely freaking terrible. Almost swore it off because I got chewed up and spit out in the party chat, but it was thanks to one other player who just waited until they were gone to talk.
That Sage is the class I finished Endwalker with, and now I'm working on Scholar to be an even better healer than when I started learning the role as a Sage.
Were those two players toxic? Maybe - I definitely misstepped many times trying to remember all the actions, but it was also up to them to utilize movement and maybe speak with a bit more patience and grace. Sage had just come out and I wasn't going to start out as a master of it.
    You aren't either.
Feed your blood lilies. /laugh at the boss that killed you last time, poison them, and try again. Shoot the boss until your tank is worried about you...or...do some fortune telling (ain't worked on AST yet)?
Don't give up on working through the discomfort of being a healer. At some point, you too will be able to scoff at the mitless tank and laugh at the over-eager DPS when they blame you for their fourth repeat misstep, and more importantly, your friends who love to play with you will love to play with you even more.

The reason I like to have my group at 100% is that I still cant predict when raid- or grp-aoe is coming in. So I keep them nice and up at least around 90% so they survive that. The Triad boss in Delubrum e.g. does two nasty raid aoes in a row (and I only know that because... well, I ran that raid quite often... like... very often ^^°). If the group isnt topped up, they die. Or just yesterday in Dalriada during the "soft enrage" of Diabolos: granted, the healers were hard pressed, but one aoe was enough and almost the entire grp wiped (fun fact: a little later I got raised the moment the boss did another aoe - everyone died the moment I got up XD )
Maybe this just my anxiety speaking... Worst part is when I keep an eye on the tank, see him going below 50% while still casting my Glare, thinking "ok, next a heal then..." - and then he dies >.< And its not even that he didnt use any cd's - he just drops o.O

as a WHM main.. I'd really like a secondary attack and not another dot... GlareMaging is kinda boring as hell, even keeping everyone alive. It doesn't have to be a frequent thing, just something to shake the rotation up, something like a 20 second cool down attack would be nice. (sure the lilies help, but they require 3ish minutes to deal another "attack")

It took me years and years to realize that people dying could potentially be beyond my control. I had to finally play DPS to understand what 'optional damage' meant. I should have done it sooner, I could have defended my honor better. either way now it's part of why I have anxiety -- it's not that I think it's my fault, it's that I know nobody wants to be told they're showing their ass

The real issue is WHM who can't be bothered to stop their glare / holy spam to heal. I main tank and I have to keep HQ Max pots on my hotbar for this reason alone. I shouldn't have to pop more than one miti for a 2-3 group pull because the WHM refuses to even think about touching a healing button. I've been yelled at and "rescued" forward for only going one group at a time when that happens and it's the most irritating thing and usually ends with them getting shirked.
