One of the best rock ballads of all time. True story. When Slash heard this for the first time he was driving in his car, broke down in tears and had to pull over. His words.
The Name from the Album "Achtung Baby"....because, the Album was recording in the Hansa Studios in Berlin (Germany) and the audio engineer said every time "Achtung baby" before he start record. Bono tells this story in a documentation about this Album....Achtung Baby=Attention Baby
Last night I saw U2 at the sphere in Vegas. My favorite band of all time. They were great live as they've always been. Bono has lost his high range a little but his stage presence is still there and it was a great show. They do have great ballads but they have a lot more too. You just haven't gotten there yet. You mention the wet guitar sound. The edge is a master of that, his use of dotted eighth note delay sound is innovative. Love your reactions! Keep it up!
Interesting fact, the band was going in two different directions at this point in time. They could not agree on the sound moving forward for u2. Bono said that this point in time was the closest they came to splitting up. Then one night in the recording studio, the guitarist - The Edge - showed the rest of the band the riff he had been working on (the gentle one you hear at 9:49). It united the band together, and they have never looked back.
Maybe their best tune or at least spiritually! This band is spiritually above so many bands with their feeling musically and lyrically giving all of us a sense of hope and togetherness!❤️☮️
You´ve just stumbled on another masterpiece, if you ask me! Love to see you find these - this song, and lyrics are truly amazing!! Just the right amount of feel, great melodies, The Edge adds his beautiful guitar... Where the lyrics still get to lead. And the lyrics can be applicable in many life situations! Me for sure, can certainly recognize a lot... I also really appreciate your comments! Spot on! 😍😍
On the 92 Zootv tour when this song first cane out and was played in concert it was a huge song in concert and went on to be one big their best songs ever written
Achtung Baby was recorded in Berlin at Hansa studio the same studio David Bowie recorded in back in the day!! Great reaction video as always, keep up the great work!!

Phil, when you say that the lyrics are open for interpretation by the listener... You have hit the nail on the head. If you look this song up on the most popular 'Lyric Meaning' sites, you'll find tons of wildly varying attempts to explain what this song means. U2 songs in general tend to be this way, but 'One' is especially dividing among fans. In the end, I think it is whatever you get out of the song. I won't bore people with my own meaning though, lol. I just wanted to say thanks for the reaction!! Always a fun time hanging out and watching you two react to great videos!
i would want to hear your interpretation, for sure. That's how we learn and connect with each other; sharing those thoughts and emotions that are attached to any given situation.
Would love to see u guys go “all I want is you/where the streets have no name” live from slane castle. Bono’s dad died day before the show and he still wanted to go on. One of the greatest transitions between 2 songs.
This was THE slow dance song when I was in high school but now as a divorced dad my ex gave this to me on a cd yearssss ago when we broke up and man seeing these lyrics it really hit me today especially. Love your channel, keep up the awesome work bringing old memories back to light , it’s truly great!
The song says so much in a concise use of lyrics. The hardest part to making this song was the original riff you hear in the beginning of the song. Once Edge played that, it sparked the creating process in the band again.
U2 has a very diverse catalog. Been a fan since the early 80's when MTV would play Gloria. Seen them 20 times in concert since the mid 80's. The most recent at The Sphere, where they perform the whole album of Achtung Baby. Still a great experience to see them live, but at the Sphere, it's almost beyond description.
U2 did it first :-) You know you're chewing bubble gum You know what that is but you still want some You just can't get enough of that lovey-dovey stuff
Hello guys. I saw them with the Joshua Tree Tour Unbelievable live band. Greta reaction as always. If you want heavy U2 try Bullet the Blue Sly or Exit
Great reaction , may i suggest Where the streets have no name official video , which cost the band nearly $50,000 in costs as they did it on a roof of a store in a dodgy part of L.A without proper permission
U2 has been my favorite band since 1979..... did my military service when their first EP Three came out with Out of control, Stories for Boys and Boy/Girl and then "11 O'Clock Tick Tock", Seen them 4 times throughout the years.... and wished i could have seen them many more times
I remember going for a while, possibly even a few years, and then hearing this song again. It was like hearing it for the first time, and gave me an incredible appreciation for it, all over again. U2 has a lot of good songs, but this is my number one from them. For something VERY different from them, check out the official video for Numb. Possibly my number two of theirs.
One is the song that essentially saved the band at the time. They went to Berlin to record a new album in late 1990. During that time the band was struggling with which direction to go. Bono and Edge wanted to get into more a more groovy, dance inspired sound and branch out from the traditional U2 sound. Adam and Larry were hesitant to do that. They were struggling to make anything click in the studio. Bono was struggling with writing lyrics. Tension was high within the band. So much that they were considering breaking up. One day while working on another song Edge came up with the guitar chords that would eventually turn into One. The rest of the band liked what they heard and it brought the band together and they started working on crafting a song around the guitar notes Edge was laying down. It turned into One. From there they wrote one of the best albums of all-time, Achtung Baby. Some say their best album and a favorite of many fans. There is a great documentary about the making of Achtung Baby called From the Sky Down. Highly recommend it along with Rattle & Hum if you’re looking to do a deeper dive into the history of the band. One is a masterpiece song and one of the most important the band has ever written. I enjoy your U2 reactions. I’m a massive U2 fan for the last 37 years. Keek going. You’ll have only scratched the surface with this band.
Live Aid 1985, a little known alt band from Ireland took the stage at 11 am , of a 12 hour concert, Broadcast worldwide satellite. The band was U2. THIE PERFORMANCE OF " BAD"...is the second most iconic performance next to Queen's set six hours later. It catapulted U2 into the mainstream and worldwide fame. Please react to this iconic performance.
I knew them having seen them live multiple times before live aid but you are correct this performance elevated them towards stardom, BAD at live aid is one of the best live performances ever, they dropped Pride(in the name of love) to continue the song, a little known album track but Bono the genius knew and the rest as they say is history :)
@@mickr1448 thanks man. I was 15 in Oklahoma , and talked my parents into letting me watch the 1 TV in house..Live satellite broadcast...( 1985... funny in 2024) and I was blown away.
You have to remember 3 of the 4 members of U2, especially Bono, are men of strong faith and Christians. They are also very active activists. A lot of the lyrics in their songs dance around those kinds of themes.

While they spent a lot of the planned recording time in Berlin, most of the songs came together and were recorded in Dublin. Quite fascinating to hear your take on this one. I always enjoy how you pick things out about the instrumentation and production side of things, not just the lyrics. Great stuff. Great song too, of course. I'd suggest 'VERTIGO' next. It's a real rocker and the video's great too.
Great job with your reactions, U2 is my favorite band so it's fun to explore this journey. As you continue, before you continue going deep into their more ballad style songs it would be great to return to their harder rock WAR period like New Years Day and Sunday Bloody Sunday as was mentioned. Looking forward to exploring some of your other content. Btw, you've inspired me to make a U2 video ranking songs I think are underrated gems.
U2 has had a long and amazing career. They were more punk/hard rock in their early years. If you liked the first 2 songs of theirs you've heard- you'll love plenty more of them. Be sure to check out their earlier stuff: War, the Unforgettable Fire, Rattle and Hum and of course, the Joshua Tree.

It's actually pronounced: uhk·tuhng. When this song came out, and for a while after, many newly married couples played this song at their wedding/reception thinking this was a love song...like "We Are One" but it's actually the opposite. Classic case of people only hearing the title or the word: "one" One of many examples in the song: "You ask me to enter but then you make me crawl..... And I can't be holdin' on to what you got..... When all you got is hurt."
Yes, he wrote many of the lyrics to this song ss the recording sessions were starting to fall apart- think the quote was "we're mates first, a band second, Irather be mates than in the band". Then this song fell into place and the album recording took ff from there.
I love watching y'all get your first taste of U-phoria! Do yourselves a big favor and watch recordings of them live. The spiritual/emotional aspect you've both picked up on is really palpable there. I'd suggest, "Sunday Bloody Sunday" live from Red Rocks, "October/Bullet the Blue Sky" in Paris (2015), and "All I Want is You/Where the Streets Have No Name" in Dublin (2001). The hometown show in Dublin took place a few days after Bono's dad died of cancer. You can see and feel his grief in the transition between the 2 songs. Happy watching!
When I grew up in a Southern Baptist church we had an associate pastor that got a divorce, and half the congregation turn against him and said the Bible said that a divorced man can’t be in charge of a flock. But pastor Richard Jackson said no to that bill shit! And we got to experience pastor Rick Ausley preach the word of God. Thank you pastor Jackson!!!
Although this is a great song already, Mary takes it even higher; the crescendo ..., it's a must listen! By the way I didn't even know before this (perhaps I'm a barbarian? 😉, my only excuse is that I'm from the Netherlands)
For a deeper dive into U2 try In A Little While, which is from their Elevation 2001 tour DVD. The album is All That You Can’t Leave Behind. Imo their 2001 performance in Boston is epic.
Hey Phil & Sam, I thought you might enjoy hearing a tune by three artists that you have reacted to separately, but these three actually recorded a song together. The song was written by Brian Adams, Robert John "Mutt" Lange, and Michael Kamen for the soundtrack of the movie "The Three Musketeers" it was released in 1993 and became an international hit. So, if interested give this one a listen. "Bryan Adams, Rod Stewart, Sting - All For Love (Official Music Video) (by the channel: Bryan Adams)
Going through a divorce, you can hear THE EDGE making that guitar cry, his playing makes U2, what's U2, the playing more than create the rhythm it creates atmospheres, It is weird to explain, but his playing is unique in this aspect. It creates this sound that is HIS and it makes U2 U2
Until the End of the World is another great one, but be sure to watch the live version from the Zoo TV tour on their channel. It's better than the studio version. Likewise Exit/Gloria from the Rattle and Hum live performance is also incredible. Some of their songs are far better live and those two are definitely two of those. They are incredible live. If you go back much earlier in their timeline to the early 80's, An Cat Dubh/Into the Heart live at Red Rocks 1983 is amazing. Actually many of their performances from that concert can be found and just shine 🥰
Please if you read these; a live video fromU2 you have to watch would be a live version of with or without you in concert it is so touching and shows you exactly the true nature of Bono and why he’s so loved! ua-cam.com/video/_Ye8GLPUVsM/v-deo.htmlsi=0sEawjtsyP2dj3XN
"Achtung" is German for "Attention" U2 Went to record in Berlin (still West Berlin) after the Berlin Wall broke in Nov'1989. They went in 1990, after the Joshua Tree tour, went on a few years, and the men needed to reorient themselves. They chose a studio, Hanna, where David Bowie, Iggy Pop and such had recorded =and their co-producer Brian Eno (who was in Roxy Music) had work before with Bowie. Hansa was next to the Berlin Wall - it had a ballroom, where Nazi's pitied and danced during the War,....the ballroom, had fine acoustics, like in Bowie's "Heroes". This song "One" was their first full success, after struggles, and demos -U2 found themselves back on their path with "One". "Achtung Baby" (attention Baby!) was a line from Mel Brooks "The Producers" (1968)where two Jewish theatre producers stage "Springtime for Hitler" to be so offensive, and get their Insurance money, for their failing theatre. It was a phrase the Irish guys of U2 knew, without studying German before.
Another version you should listen to is Warren Haynes of the band Govt Mule. He does a solo stripped down acoustic version at the bonnaroo festival around 2004. It is really emotional. Stunning cover
This song saved the band from breaking up. You should watch the documentary called "From the sky down" that shows what the band was going through and how this song came out of nothing and solved their problemss
Sunday Bloody Sunday live version is a must U2 listen 🎸🎸🎸
When the organ kicks in… sublime… greetings from the home of U2! ☘️
What organ
@gazurtoids1 there's a Hammond Organ playing in the background
Nope. That’s Edge’s interpretation of a Hammond organ
It's actually a guitar thru a Leslie (rotating) speaker cabinet, or an effect that approximates a Leslie.

Classic case of people only hearing the title or the word: "one" One of many examples in the song: "You ask me to enter but then you make me crawl..... And I can't be holdin' on to what you got..... When all you got is hurt."
Wonderful song ! suggest "Street With No Name "with video or "Vertigo" with video. Thanks!
Yes, he wrote many of the lyrics to this song ss the recording sessions were starting to fall apart- think the quote was "we're mates first, a band second, Irather be mates than in the band". Then this song fell into place and the album recording took ff from there.
Great reaction. Enjoying ur journey and intelligent analysis. There’s a Mary j Bligh version that is fire
Good self wareness about your growing learning and living
awesome
I love watching y'all get your first taste of U-phoria! Do yourselves a big favor and watch recordings of them live. The spiritual/emotional aspect you've both picked up on is really palpable there. I'd suggest, "Sunday Bloody Sunday" live from Red Rocks, "October/Bullet the Blue Sky" in Paris (2015), and "All I Want is You/Where the Streets Have No Name" in Dublin (2001). The hometown show in Dublin took place a few days after Bono's dad died of cancer. You can see and feel his grief in the transition between the 2 songs. Happy watching!
he had a great voice alright very infront vocals is U2 most of the time
I prefer the video version for this great song but it’s all good!
the best song ever by u2 & probably the best non bitter sweet relationship song ever!!!
You have to listen to the’One’ collaboration with U2 and Mary J Blige. Absolute 🔥 man oh man!
OMG! I have to agree with you. Tbh it’s the only version I love.
Although this is a great song already, Mary takes it even higher; the crescendo ..., it's a must listen! By the way I didn't even know before this (perhaps I'm a barbarian? 😉, my only excuse is that I'm from the Netherlands)
Also Chris Cornells mashup of U2 and Metallica One
For a deeper dive into U2 try In A Little While, which is from their Elevation 2001 tour DVD. The album is All That You Can’t Leave Behind. Imo their 2001 performance in Boston is epic.
we're one but we're not the same
My favorite U2 song
Achtung Baby was recorded in Berlin.
Pronounced Ocktune baby. Great album
Try maybe Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me for a different side to U2
Please if you read these; a live video fromU2 you have to watch would be a live version of with or without you in concert it is so touching and shows you exactly the true nature of Bono and why he’s so loved!

You need to listen to “Bad” it’ll awaken you!!! From Rattle and Hum
This song saved the band from breaking up. You should watch the documentary called "From the sky down" that shows what the band was going through and how this song came out of nothing and solved their problemss
there probably isnt any bigger humanitarian in the world then Bono, he has been feeding and helping the poor around the world for decades now
Mas cometeu um grande erro apoiar os ucranazis...., não tem desculpa!
Every U2 album is different. Which I love each with a different style. Check out there Album “U2 Live at Red Rocks” my favourite album
Olá, abraço aqui do Brasil! Seria legal vocês ouvirem a linda e atmosférica canção: The Unforgettable Fire!! Uma obra prima!
