    I so appreciate how the "disapproving dad" trope is written here. Stoick never actually thinks low of Hiccup and he does want to connect with him. He thinks killing dragons is the only way, but they're more alike than they think. After Stoick said Hiccup wasn't his son, he briefly took a couple steps back because even he knows he went too far there.

      I also love the touch of the empty chair standing by Hiccup's bed when he awakens at the end of the movie, implying that Stoick's been sitting there, watching over him for most of the time he was unconscious, not to mention that Stoick would've had to be the one in charge of making Berk more dragon friendly, showing how much his son's happiness means to him.

      He just wanted his son to be competent. Not the weak, scared, liability he started out to be. Being able to hold your own is the difference between life and death for you and those around you. And once Hiccup figures it out by himself, Stoick is truly proud and relieved.

      That moment when he said, "You're not a viking. You're not my son." Was the worst thing he could have said to Hiccup. The Norse took great pride in their ancestry. If you look at Norse, and Scandinavian surnames, you see a lot like, Anderson, Thomson and similar. They, literally, mean son of Ander or son of Thom. When Stoick said that, Hiccup could no longer claim his ancestry. He would have been the lowest status person in the village. It would, also, mean that unless he fathered another child or adopted someone, Stoick's bloodline would end with him. And after Hiccup died, he would not be welcome at the table of his ancestors in Valhalla...assuming he was let in.
      So, yeah. What Stoick said was the worst curse he could say. And the only saving grace was that Hiccup was the only one who heard him say it, so he could take it back.
      Side note: The first flights with Toothless., including where he terrorizes Astrid would have been really profound for them. Considering back then that the highest most anyone got was when they climbed a tall tree, and flying was something no one would really think of, to find yourself flying so high that you are above the clouds and looking down on mountains would have been a view reserved for the Gods. We can imagine how amazing and fun that flight would be. They, literally, couldn't.

    The musical score, "Forbidden Friendship", never fails to make me bawl my eyes out. The build up when Hiccup and Toothless bond to the end with the soft chorus is so emotionally charged.
    And not just only the score, but the entire scene has no dialogue whatsoever, only actions and reactions. Hiccup touching Toothless's nose will forever be iconic.

      I think considering the boats were gone and that dragon could've roasted him and Gobber in less than a minute, he wasn't really buying them anything. Honestly, I wasn't really a fan of Stoick in this movie. I don't hate him, I just found it hard to let him off the hook that easily.

    • @BeDatAPickle
      @BeDatAPickle 2 місяці тому +14

      @seangriffin2053 It's a big island. He was at least trying to buy them time to get out of sight. He's also a single father and the chief who has to take care of an entire village while also worrying about frequent dragon attacks. You can't really blame him for being upset with Hiccup when all he's known is that dragons are dangerous and are constantly attacking his people and putting his family in danger and now his son is suddenly trying to protect the creatures that have caused him so much pain and suffering. We learn even more about that last point in the 2nd movie as well. He's always trying to keep his family and his people safe.

    • @seangriffin2053
      @seangriffin2053 2 місяці тому +3

      @@BeDatAPickle Well unless they are marathon swimmers, they can't get away. He is obviously a good chief, but he's failed as a father. Am I supposed to ignore the fact him slamming that hammer down when his son is in the ring with that dragon nearly kills him? Stoick obviously knows how they react to that. Glossing over that really bothered me. The fact that Hiccup is so different really keeps him at a distance from his son and it shows through most of the movie. I know that happens in these parent-child relationships. My issue with Stoick is he doesn't really try until it's almost too late. And I also know the 2nd movie gives more context (we're not meant to know that yet), but it's not like Stoick ever explains himself. When it comes to Hiccup, he really doesn't believe he has to.

    • @samuelvincent557
      @samuelvincent557 2 місяці тому +14

      @@seangriffin2053 No, that shouldn't be glossed over. Stoick made some terrible mistakes, and they were tied to his character flaws. He hated dragons, and only ever saw them as a threat. He loved his son but couldn't relate to him. And at that moment, I think, that his response wasn't just about Hiccup trying to tame the dragon, but HOW he did it.
      Hiccup threw down the helmet that was made from his Mother's armor. His Father kept that armor, and had it fashioned into TWO helmets. Seeing as he presented it to Hiccup immediately after getting back from the filed hunt, means that he had that made long ago in hopes of being able to give it to Hiccup. He wanted his son to have something of his Mother's. And when Hiccup threw it aside and said, "I'm not one of them", he was, turning his back on his people, and disrespecting that gift Stoick gave him.
      THAT is why I think he was so mad. How Hiccup tried to show them was done in a way that was an insult to everyone, especially his Mother and Father.
      Stoick is a flawed person, and didn't know how to be a Father to someone who was as different, AND be the Chief. But he was, at least, able to admit he was wrong...when he sat still long enough, shut his mouth and actually was forced to listen.

    This movie has my all-time favorite musical score from John Powell. It's so melodically simple yet orchestrally complex.
    And as put by the YT channel *Sideways,* 99% of all the movie's themes and melodies are in the opening except for the theme for Toothless (because he represents the unknown). So, basically, John Powell is telling a Hero's Journey story just through the music!
    And the track that plays during Hiccup's first flight with Toothless (called "Test Drive") is actually both Toothless and Hiccup's theme played together, emphasizing that they have to work together for this to work.
    And it's because of this that I was not only mad that Powell didn't win the Oscar for Best Original Score (he was nominated, but still), but I was even more livid when I read that _The Social Network_ won Best Original Score. It's like, did _Social Network_ even *_HAVE_* a musical score?!?!

I felt like The Hidden World tried to cutify him to the point that it was a little off putting to me. I mean, he’s meant to be “the unholy offspring of lightning and death itself”. They did a great job of this in the first movie, and he felt powerful to a degree that was fitting of his title . They (in my opinion) contrasted this well with the cuter scenes without one undermining the other. The second movie did a decent job too, not quite as good as the first, but the third movie makes him feel like a weak little puppy in my eyes.

  • @tehdipstick

    Stoick isn't disappointed in Hiccup at the start because of Hiccup's small size or lack of muscles, nor is it true that he can't stand who Hiccup is as a person. A lot of people seem to think that Gobber is better at understanding Hiccup than his father, but in actuality Gobber is part of the reason Hiccup and Stoick don't see things eye to eye. Gobber means well, and he does have some good ideas about what Hiccup needs, but he's a terrible mediator between father and son.
    The reason for Stoick's disappointment at the beginning is heavily implied when he admonishes Hiccup after the opening dragon raid. Hiccup has established a pattern by this point of going out and trying to fight dragons with his inventions, making a mess of things and putting himself, and other people in danger. Hiccup's opening narration also implies that he only wants to kill dragons in the first place to get a girlfriend and be seen as one of the cool kids, rather than for the good of the village.
    We're also shown that Hiccup has a tendency to beat around the bush a lot, omit information and straight up lie, or at the very least 'bend the truth' at times in order to not get into trouble. There's little reason for Stoick to believe his son is telling the truth once he thinks he's allied himself with the enemy they've been at war with for 300 years.
    I love how Stoick's change of heart at the end is purely the result of his love for his son winning out over 7 generations worth of ingrained hatred and intolerance towards dragons, and that he tells Hiccup he's proud of him *before* he flies off to face the Red Death. He's telling Hiccup he's proud of him for who he is as a person, rather than his accomplishments.

      It should also be noted that, even Hiccup meets Stoic/the ways of his people halfway, something that allows him to finally find his place in the community: while he didn't kill a defenseless dragon, to the point he says "I can't kill one", in that final showdown Hiccup kills an entity that clearly is not backing down and, in this particular case, is going for the kill.
      Hiccup and his community find he is not useless or a coward, he just needed to have a clearer reason to take a life (he doesn't kill just for the sake of killing).
      Also I wouldn't be too hard with Gobber being a terrible mediator: while Gobber accomodates more Hiccup's eccentricities, he is not entirely in the channel of trying "new ways" for the dragon problem (thus he also tries to make Hiccup settle for "what's always been done") and, while he tries to soften Stoic in some of his views, he can't push the boundary too much; Stoic may be his friend, but he is also his leader... Vikings didn't take open challenges to authority very well.
      It's not a perfect intervention, but nobody else is doing something (all the other members of the town disrespect Hiccup or simply love how Stoic loses his cool with him) and the two involved parts are locked in a downward spiral because they don't listen to each other (Stoic tries to be more strict; as a response, Hiccup makes crazier stunts that require lying before backfiring spectacularly, prompting Stoic to be more severe... and so on). Gobber was never going to make much of a difference, but he still tried to do something.

    • @tehdipstick
      @tehdipstick 2 місяці тому +8

      @@DocuzanQuitomos To be fair, I don't think anyone saw Hiccup as a coward. He would run out and try to help during the dragon raids after all, even though he was wholly unequipped and unprepared to do so. They saw him as reckless, clumsy and imprudent, as well as generally being incompetent and not fitting in, but none of them accused him of being cowardly.
      Like I said, I think Gobber means well, and his heart is certainly in the right place. He has a good idea about what's going with both Hiccup and Stoick since they both have an easier time talking to him than they do each other, but he does inadvertently add to the rift between father and son by saying things like "It's not so much what you look like, it's what's inside that he can't stand," when we learn pretty much immediately afterwards that Stoick loves his son very much, but has no idea how to deal with him being so different from all the other vikings.
      At the start of the movie Hiccup and Stoick are both approaching their frayed relationship with a preconceived idea of each other: Hiccup thinks his dad is disappointed in him because he isn't big, strong or tough like the others, and Stoick thinks Hiccup is being irreverent and irresponsible, treating the raids as an opportunity to get a girlfriend and joking about the village potentially having to starve during the winter months. We learn that neither of these are true, but Gobber telling Hiccup that his dad doesn't like him because of who he is as a person, rather than because of what he looks like, just adds fuel to the fire and makes Hiccup feel like more of a failure.
      Gobber isn't in the wrong for wanting to do something, and he clearly realizes the position he's in, and that Stoick and Hiccup both listen to him more than they listen to each other. He's obviously trying to help as best he can, but he is still adding to the pressure Hiccup feels when it comes to proving himself and making his father proud. Gobber could have chosen to set them both straight, telling Hiccup that his father's worried about him, and telling Stoick that Hiccup just wants to be accepted and make him proud, but instead he unwittingly keeps them from seeing things eye to eye.

    Well fun fact, the "cinematographer" for the HTTYD trilogy is actually Roger Deakins (known for films like 1917, Blade Runner 2049 and so on).
    The production team originally thought that they will be spending time with him consulting about the lighting and stuff for a day or two, but unexpectedly Roger himself insisted that he stayed for the entire production.

    At 2:04, you mention Stoick's beard, right? Apparently, that was the most difficult thing to animate at that time because all the hair in this movie was INDIVIDUALLY ANIMATED. So imagine having to make such a manly beard while your outdated composite monitors beg you to put them out of their misery as their processors are fried to death (That was a mouthful to write but my point still stands).

And something that I am sure you picked up on your full reaction is when Stoick leaves Hiccup at the great hall after saying "You're not my son", he staggers just after just realizing what he said. One thing I'll never get is some people blame Stoick for stopping the Arena fight. It makes sense he would, we've seen Dragon's from Hiccup's point of view but he hasn't, plus he threw his weapon and protection away when he was meant to fight one

  • @roreddick9235
    @roreddick9235 Місяць тому +2

    When Hiccup gets touched by Toothless the first time, you notice this tiny start-and-stop hesitancy from Toothless before he makes contact. That was an error that wound up making the scene more incredible than it already was. From Google: In "How to Train Your Dragon," the moment where Hiccup first touches Toothless's snout, and Toothless seems to slightly hesitate before fully making contact, is often considered an animation error that the creators decided to keep in the film because it added to the emotional impact of the scene, making the moment of trust between them feel even more powerful; essentially, it was a happy accident that enhanced the story.

    If you plan on diving deeper into this franchise, there are 3 TV shows that you can check out that all take place before the second movie, and show all the adventures that Hiccup, Toothless and their friends get into.

    If you look at the scene where Hiccup is falling and Toothless is desperately trying to get to him, Hiccup is falling head first. The first part of him that Toothless would have been able to reach would have been his feet. It's never explicitly stated, but it's very likely that Toothless bit off Hiccup's foot trying to catch him and save him. So, the parallels are even stronger than you realized. They didn't just both lose their left fin/leg, each of them lost the body part to the other.

    you have a good memory and eye for detail, the Arrax vs Vhagar scene was in fact partially based on/inspired by Toothless's fight against the Red Death, as the big one's called.
    This franchise is one of my all-time top favourites, so I'm thrilled your taking an interest in it now, and if, at the end of these movies, your interested in seeing more, there are a plethora of shorts, specials, and several series that are all worthy/quality additions to this franchise, plus, they also show many Dragon species you never see in the movies, so they are worth watching just for that if nothing else (but there are plenty of other good things in them, as well). Plus, at the end of this, I would be interested to hear your final verdict on which kind of Dragon/s you would most want to train/fly
    p.s. contrary to what I imagine many people's favourite Dragon is (Toothless/Night Furies), my favourite species is the fast, colourful, spine-shooting, bipedal, bird/Dinosaur-like Deadly Nadder, whose magnesium based flames are canonically the hottest of any Dragon-fire

    I wonder how many people recognized the voice actors,.. look them up you might be surprised. Also the TV series is just as good as the movies. They develop alot of lore and relationships, not just between humans but also between dragons. By far the most important thing is that the TV series has a definitive conclusion, no cliffhanger, no questions about the future, just a solid conclusive ending to a great epic.
