The franchise is so good, even the TV shows are great! Each dragon is based on a mix of animals, like toothless is based on cats and salamanders, nadders are based on birds, gronkles are based on bees and bulldogs. Watching the movie you connect with toothless and think about your own pets
I feel like they are all based on cats, they all like "grass" and purr, like fish, but each of them have other combos! Bee + bulldog is the best combo I've ever heard for the gronkle! It's so accurate xD It's weird how toothless went from feeling like a giant cat in the 1st movie to a full on dog in the 3rd, licking people and everything xD
@@Thebeezzkneezz. Oh I watched a documentary on the making of httyd 1 and Simon Otto explained what each dragon was based on and how they came up with their sounds... you can find it on youtube, really recommend watching it
36:55 That's the reason Toothless is really scary. For some reason, many people pay attention to his cute appearance, but completely forget his description from the book of dragons. He dropped to the ground a dragon that was 15-20 times bigger and heavier than him, who also stood firmly on all four legs, with one shot. If you start to look into the details, then you realize that Toothless is a damn scary combat unit.
"It feels more like lava" and THIS is where HTTYD is really cool because the dragon biology lore is really cool, dragons create fire in different ways, zipplebacks breathe gas and then light it like a lot of dragons too, nightmares have flammable saliva which can be spat and it's also why they're able to set themselves on fire through regular grooming. Gronckles eat rocks and the qualities of their fire change depending on the rocks or combination of rocks that they eat. The depth and uniqueness of every single species is like nothing else :D "Those aren't words" actually that does translate pretty correctly soooo
After Stoic leaves the room, the door flipping open again is quite symbolic, if you notice he also seems quite shocked at what he has just said. For me it suggests the door is still open for their relationship. Love this film, the music, animation and story are a real treat. Definitely recommend watching the rest of the films.
I have the directors commentary on the dvd, they say they took some Ghibli inspiration of 'imperfections' for that door to not slam shut as well as the symbolism
The sequence when Hiccup gets closer to Toothless and he slowly warms up to him is probably one of my all time favourite movie scenes. The whole scene. The music. The emotion conveyed without a single word. Every single little detail of it is perfect.
If a person has ever taken in an animal/pet that was a stray and had to slowly win their trust, then they know this scene perfectly captures that. The slow process of getting an animal to understand they can trust you, and for it to pay off at the end, very few feelings beat it.
All 3 are good in their own ways too. Number one is the best overall with regards to plot and script; number two is my personal favorite and has the best emotional scenes; number three has the highest quality animation (most advanced) and the strongest ending/epilogue. The Riders and Race to the Edge series are also excellent (but kind of rough to make it through copyright for videos), their strengths are lore/world building and very good villains.
Many people in the fandom actually hate the third movie because of all the plot holes and sudden need to connect with the plotline of the books. I personally love the trilogy even with it's imperfections.
I'm one of those people, personally! Less because of the plotholes, more because I felt the message and character dynamics were rather poorly executed. However, I definitely can see why people enjoy it. It's got a great villian and beautiful animation (even if the designs are less than stellar imo...)
The musical score for these movies is TOP NOTCH. There have been showings of the films with a live orchestra, and OMG I would love to go to one of those. And bawl my eyes out. Music makes me very emotional.
@@AndrewWest-nu9ipone of the guys who either wrote or directed it felt like there was a part where there needed to be a song so he not only wrote the song, he sang it.
@@AndrewWest-nu9ip The part where they fall and Hiccup gets back on just in time is one of my all time favourite movie moments. The music kicking in when Toothless opens his wings and catches the full force of the air, barely gliding over the trees, Hiccup throwing away the instructions and pressing the tail piece into gear, flying like a bullet between the rocks...just amazing.
So true! Also the score for the hidden world is a bit underrated compared to the other movies. Please sit down and listen to Furies in love, it's amazing 😭
When Stoic left and told Hiccup that he might be back...just remember...they left with three ships and only came back with one...and the ship was on its last legs
I love how everyone, without falter, absolutely melts after Hiccup tosses the knife in the water and Toothless gors into confused cat mode. Also, in regards to Hiccup's foot, realistically just his leg wouldn't burn off from the fire. So how'd he lose it? Well he was falling backwards and Toothless was diving after him. More than likely, in order to grab him and pull him into his wings, Toothless probably had to bite down on his leg and pull him. So there's a solid chance Totthless had to bite Hiccup's foot off in order to get enough reach to save him.
To be honest I really like that Stoic (Hiccups dad) didn't have any other "redemption arc" than that. For 300 years killing dragons was their only way of life and Stoic being the chief of the village with Hiccup as his son who was against everything they believed in, it makes sense how Stoic treated Hiccup, even tho he was his son, (and different times as well, but that is a whole other discussion). But then he saw who his son really was, and even before Hiccup really showed his true heroeism with slaying the big dragon Stoic apologized and said he was proud of him being his son. That scene makes me emotional every time. I love this movie and your reaction! Can't wait for the other two! This trilogy truly is a masterpiece
Agreed. And when Stoick said, "You aren't my son", that was about the worst curse he could make. That meant that Hiccup would no longer be welcome at his Father's house and would have to find someone else willing to take him in, which would be unlikely, as that would mean crossing the chief, or fend for himself. It also means that he couldn't claim his Father's lineage and would be the lowest status person in the village. If you look at a lot of Scandinavian names they have surnames like Erikson, Jacobson and the like. It, literally, means son of Jacob, etc. It also means that unless Stoick takes another wife or adopts someone, his bloodline dies with him. And lastly, when Hiccup dies, it means that, according to their beliefs, he would not be welcome at the hall and table of his ancestors and would have no family in the afterlife. This was why Stoick reeled after saying that. It was something that had MAJOR consequences.
Not gonna lie, when Gobber said “well… most of him” I thought he was referring to hiccups size and I was literally like “dude, this is not the time for that 😂”
Fun fact. The hesitation from Toothless when touching Hickups Hand was an animation error. But the studion decided to leave it in the finished movie. That was the cutest error if ever seen. I love this movie soooo much and have high hopes for the live action.
30:37 Gahhh! This moment is so beautifully subtle that NO ONE NOTICES IT! And it's a shame because it plays such a HUGE part in showcasing the depth of Stoick as a character in this first movie!
For me the saddest part of this movie was when Toothless leaves Hiccup's dad because Hiccup tells him not to . He could have ended him and easily flew away but he didn't
I hope y'all react to the shows too.i love how sassy and petty Toothless is.They made Toothless' noises by mixing human noises, elephant noises, horse noises, tiger noises, and cat noises together. Also I just subscribed.
8:18 he said "THANKS!" With base boost and i choked on my root beer. i love that you added the base boost to the roar cause probably what it felt like for hiccup lol
bit of foreshadowing, when Gobber was talking about trolls only stealing left socks? And then hiccups loses his left foot. Especially most socks don't really have a left or right, unless vikings made socks different
So glad you watched this one. One of my favorite animated movies for sure. I love watching y'all--you're so effortlessly funny and real. As a podcaster with a barking dog, "we need how to train your dog" hit my funny bone. Keep it up!
Toothless is an orphaned tween so they are both growing up at the same time. Most Dragons shoot fire, Toothless shoots plasma and never misses. He also has supersonic speed and is highly intelligent. Edit. Also, Hiccup hurt Toothless' tail and Toothless took off Hiccup's leg. Both injuries and prosthetics are left sided. They both immediately forgave each other and helped each other adjust to the changes.
11:51: "Those aren't words." Lol, interestingly, they are! :D It's English, just transliterated into runic script. A few letters are absent or changed since Younger Futhark only has 16 runes, but it says prettymuch what Hiccup reads out. Runes always look so neat and dramatic imo, since it's a script designed to be easily carved or chiseled, so there are no curved lines. Yeah, Toothless is SUCH a cat, the whole "no touchy" thing unless it's his idea, but if you ignore him and do something else he can't help but get closer to investigate? ADORABLE.

This series is one of the rare ones which has a good blend of feel good moments, and learning moments. Each movie is just as good as the others. Not to give any spoilers, but I highly recommend watching the next two; not that I doubt you wouldn’t, but hey.
I think you missed one of the best and most subtle bits in the movie due to making a joke about the tall doors. XD. There’s a moment after Stoic and Hiccup fight in the long hall and Stoic says “you’re not my son”, Stoic steps outside and just staggers slightly with this look of pure pain and shock on his face then he steals himself for the task at hand and keeps going. That fight broke Stoic’s heart, and the only thing he really knows how to do is to fight dragons, and so that’s what he tries to do to solve the problem. Hurt people hurt people. From Stoic’s point of view his son has lied to him and his entire clan, putting them all at risk with his deception. Did he overreact? Yeah, he did, but is it really all that inconceivable a reaction? We as viewers have the benefit of seeing the situation from all sides and with an outsider’s perspective, but all these Vikings have known for generations is the danger that dragons present and the struggle they have surviving against their constant raiding. What is one very brief moment of coexistence compared to lifetimes of conflict, and he didn’t even really see any of what hiccup could do with dragons before the “kill ceremony” disaster. So, don’t be too hard on Stoic. Everything he does makes perfect sense given his experiences and knowledge. Very well written character, and probably my favorite in the franchise.
The music is DreamWorks films are freaking entire master classes of their own. The first flight scene, with the combo of hiccups, toothless, and the main theme, the terror and joy, was beyond emotional.
This is my first time watching your channel. I love seeing people react to this incredible, wonderful trilogy. I will definitely be tuning into the next two. Enjoy!
I only just started watching your guys videos but this is the most I’ve seen of Bridgette showing a lot of emotion and spazzing and talking, this movie was that good haha!
Love this series. What really got me on the first watch was a real consequence for the protagonist where when I was a kid the hero would get cut or scraped but never lose a limb or something like that. I hope you two watch the other films
I just found y’all and I really loved your reactions throughout the movie! You two honestly made it feel like I was watching it for the first time again😁 I can’t wait for the rest of the movies!! Plus, there’s also extras branched off from the main movies including a short series. I personally liked the series despite the animation & some script lines being weird lol
Toothless' head is modeled after Axolotyls, and his characteristics and mannerisms are based on many different pets so everyone can relate and love his character. Of course most noticeable cats, dogs, even bats when he was hanging upside down, and much more. Hiccup and Toothless both ended up injuring each other. Toothless got his revenge though lol. Initially, they wanted to take Hiccup loosing his leg out of the film, fearing it would be too much for younger audiences. However, their test audiences made them keep it thankfully! There are 3 films total, each one actually gets better than the last! And they are planning on making a live-action one at some point. I enjoy animated films but I typically prefer other films. Horror and indie films are my favorite. But THIS series is my favorite animated series. There are tv shows for it as well. One of them falls between the 1st and 2nd films and gives more context to why certain decisions are made. I don't think I've seen a reaction channel react to the tv shows ( I typically watch films/ film reactions) but it's worth a watch even if you don't record them. But you can easily just watch the 3 films and not be lost. The show just expands on world-building.
You should definitely react to ‘How to train your dragon: the hidden world / Kit Harington and Toothless, the lost audition tapes’, it’s hilarious. Kit (aka Jon Snow) voiced a character in the second movie and this short vid is part of the promotion campaign.
I'm so glad you like this movie! One of my all time favorites, for sure. The score gets me every time. Someone else may have already mentioned it but in the scene where Toothless "draws" Hiccup in the dirt - if you look at it the right way, it isn't just squiggles. You can see a Hiccup in there for real.
My first love of dragons… Dragonriders of Pern. Found that series in an isolated little nook of my middle school library and it’s what got me into fantasy novels deeper than any book before 😌🥰
By the way, If you're interested in seeing Hiccup's growth between the first and second film, maybe you'd be interested in checking out the shows on your own time? They are canon btw, and not only do they show how Hiccup matures and grows his leadership skills and gains confidence, but also lets you see more of his relationships with his father and Astrid and how they develop. If you want more Dreamworks Dragons content, I definitely recommend.
Fun fact: the terrible terror was the original design for toothless! The movies are loosely based onna book series, and in the books toothless looked just like the terrible terror! And in the books it wasnt a finding acceptance of the dragons story. They already loved the dragons in the first book and they went on an adventure together. Theres even an old version of the movie u can find online of the original toothless and hiccup playing with him in his house! Im so glad that we got big black cat toothless tho. If we didnt I wouldn't have my toothless tattoo!
This is hands down one of the best Animated movie series!!! All three movies are brilliant, with amazing character growth, and I know yall will love it ❤️
Aaaaaah, i thought they saw those.. I can't wait for the rest. I knew u would love them, they're hella funny, adorable and yet heartbreaking too. I teared up (again) when seeing his leg again.

Not Sure If They Picked Up On It, But It Was Hiccup Who Shot Toothless’ Tail Off, Toothless Was Flying Like A Beast In The Opening Scene.

This is my first time watching your channel. I love seeing people react to this incredible, wonderful trilogy. I will definitely be tuning into the next two. Enjoy!
'It's on the same side'
Yep, they're going to do this often in the franchise so watch out for those cool details.
This entire trilogy is truly a beautiful story. Cant wait for the next two!
I love this series of animated films. I think I loved them more than my son..LOL. looking forward to the live action movie
I was 15 when it first came out and I went and saw the sequels. I saw one of them twice and dragged ppl with me. Lol
I only just started watching your guys videos but this is the most I’ve seen of Bridgette showing a lot of emotion and spazzing and talking, this movie was that good haha!
25:09 “I can show you the world. Shining shimmering splendid….” Oops wrong movie.
First time seeing Cody teary eyed here, and on my favourite childhood movie! I cry everytime i watch this.
The best movies/trilogy i ever watched in my whole life! I love dragons and i am watching Game of Thrones now for the first time.
How to train your dragon is one of the few movie trilogies i think are genuinely masterpieces. Each movie just gets better and better.
ive watched this movie probably a hundred times and i cry everytime
Cody’s fixation on the doors was killing me😂
I'm convinced if those movies don't melt your heart you simply don't have one
I had a black cat that was basically Toothless. So loving. Miss you Jasper
I love how everyone literally has the same reaction to Toothless every time!! 🥹💔
I’ve watched like 100 reactions to this movie.. never gets old it’s so good
You should definitely react to ‘How to train your dragon: the hidden world / Kit Harington and Toothless, the lost audition tapes’, it’s hilarious.
I enjoyed your reaction a lot and seriously Toothless is so cute I love him ❤ ❤.
My first love of dragons… Dragonriders of Pern. Found that series in an isolated little nook of my middle school library and it’s what got me into fantasy novels deeper than any book before 😌🥰
I absolutely love how sarcastic hiccup is in the first movie😭😭
You guys are in for a quality ride. These films make up such a great trilogy.
I’m amazed Stormfly and Astrid bonded, considering all of their previous interactions consist of Astrid whacking her across the face. 😂😂😂😂
This is really such a wholesome franchise. I can't wait for you to see the sequel.
Yes yes YESSSSS, the whole How of Train Your Dragon trilogy is amazing and tugs, plays and runs at those heartstrings!!!
YESSSSSSSSSSS CANT WAIT FOR THE NEXT TWO YESSSSS
favorite franchise EVER!! all of the movies are great and the friendship portrayed in it is the best❤️
THE WAY HE SAID "well Hi did you do this to me? jerk"
All three movies are brilliant, with amazing character growth, and I know yall will love it ❤️
This is one of my favorite animated trilogies. The 2nd one is my favorite.
Aaaaaah, i thought they saw those..
I can't wait for the rest. I knew u would love them, they're hella funny, adorable and yet heartbreaking too.
I teared up (again) when seeing his leg again.
