One of the most beautiful parallels in this film is how Toothless flies Astrid around wildly and terrifies her until she apologizes to Hiccup, and at the end, he doesn't reveal that Hiccup is alive until Stoic apologizes.
That look toothless has on his face is too perfect. Stoic: You brought him back alive! Toothless: You damn right I did, what, who you think you talking to maaaan you trippin, don't act all surprised 😂
I love how that works on multiple levels, though I kind-of see it as both Astrid and (especially) Stoick apologising to both Hiccup *and* Toothless. When Toothless is performing the crazy aggressive aerobatics with Astrid he's essentially responding to her own aggression and showing her what he *could* do if he didn't trust Hiccup; the fact that Hiccup is strongly protesting this approach when Toothless's instincts have actually found the most direct way to get through to the axe-wielding warrior maiden he's just met just makes it funnier. Obviously the scene with Stoick is much heavier emotionally; Toothless's experiences with Stoick have only involved witnessing hurt towards Hiccup and himself - having protected his best friend from the explosion and fire, Toothless is fully prepared to protect Hiccup from his own father until given a reason to believe it's unnecessary. Another aspect to add to the (already humungous) pile of "beautiful" in this movie is the way that Toothless - a non-human character initially portrayed as a threat - is the first to realise just how special a human being Hiccup is. On the basis of a sort-of wary initial trust, Hiccup gave Toothless back his ability to fly. In the subsequent scenes with Astrid and Stoick, Toothless is essentially demanding that both of them acknowledge just how much they have in his friend... And he does it without saying a single word.
What’s really cool is that his personality isn’t too dissimilar to a leopard gecko, bearded dragon, or tegu that has been handled and socialized with people often from a young age, they can be very personable and sweet!

Threw hands with a monstrous nightmare and sent it packing. Bro is straight up superhuman.
For all the mistakes and failures to communicate, Stoic is actually a great leader. He knows how to motivate his people to do what needs to be done. He's not afraid to get into the dirty work or face danger, he's smart and observant on the battlefield (when everyone else was celebrating the dragons running away, he was still paying attention, sensing something was off.), and he does his best for his people. But no one person has all the answers and he needed to learn to listen to those around him who might see something he missed. Once he did, he was able to open himself to new possibilities and trust his son. He's a stubborn Viking, but even when he said Hiccup wasn't his son anymore, he actually staggered with the weight of what he'd said because he really does care.
Gobber's singing line is one of the funniest I've ever heard. "I got my axe and I got my mace and I love my wife with the ugly face; I'm a Viking through and through." LOL Gets me every time.
People think Astrid hated Hiccup; but remember, when she first saw Toothless, she tried to DEFEND Hiccup and told him to run from what she thought was a wild dragon. Just something to think about.
She also silently defends him in the beginning to when the others start making fun of him for lying about taking down a night fury. Not only that, but her dislike of him was justified, she’s dedicated her life to this and trains daily, only for the walking disaster of the village to overnight become *the* uncontested best student, even though he spends his time drawing random designs (for saddles and artificial tail mechanics but she doesn’t know that), building stuff in his workshop, and disappearing for hours on end carrying a basket of fish.
The title implies that it's Hiccup who trains Toothless, when in reality, it's Toothless who trains Hiccup about dragons and what kind of creatures they are. Amazing movie
@@erikperhs_ lol or you could go for totally literal, while Toothless was bonding with Hiccup, Hiccup was using that knowledge to train the Other dragons, he's using Toothless help to write a how to Manuel on training Dragons, Toothless shows him things or he stumbles onto them, then tests out the theory in the arena on the other Dragons. So he's writing a how to Manuel and going about it scientifically
Third one…falls flat a bit if you watch the shows. Like…Vigo was a MUCH more threatening villain than…whatever that guy’s name was in the third movie (and so was Drago, but it’s more impactful when there are two others), but _that’s_ the guy, for some unfathomable reason, that makes them leave Berk and give the dragons up. Doesn’t sit right.
Well in a village where everyone is built different, no one's really built different... so hiccup, in that way... is... you know...... built different. lol
This movie is full of snall details that are worth the rewatch. First, is that Toothless actually responds when people apologize. Leveling out when Astrid says sorry, and showing Hiccup is alive to Stoick when he's begging forgiveness. Second, is that moments after the "you're not my son" scene that's been done to death in all movies ever, Stoick actually staggers a bit in shock and regret at what he's said. He powers through it, but the haunted look in his eye truly sells the moment!
Now imagine having to tell your little niece that no, she can't have a dragon, after watching that movie. I was really close to crying myself, because the smol one was soooo heartbroken, it took a couple of weeks until she got over it and began understanding. Edit: yes, the movie AND the TV series are absolutely worth watching!!! The TV show is a bit sillier (it ran on nickelodeon if I remember correctly), but you'll get a ton of background on the village, its inhabitants and the dragons. Guessing by what you said about you liking that style, I'm sure you'll love both.

I was a Netflix subscriber back before they did streaming. They had over 60,000+ movies on Blu-Ray and DVD, and another 10,000+ TV shows. At the time I cancelled, I had watched some 6,000 movies.
I didn't even think once. I knew Natalie would love it and all the sequels (can't wait). She easily gets so invested in a character like Hick-up and Toothless..
an important detail that people often miss is that the terrible terror or whatever it's called that hiccup is supposed to kill for his trial bursts out of the enclosure and into the cage and at first COMPLETELY ignores hiccup and looks for a way out. Only once he realizes that he's trapped does he turn his attention towards the human.
To many already doing or done it, so many more animations out there. Not a bad one but all animations take a long time, just wish people would start doing or at least suggesting different things. Personally I'd love to see a bunch of different cartoons or animes reviewed episode by episode, like Dragon ball, or Bleach for ones that got big in the States, or old school cartoons like G I Joe or Transformers. Heck even one like Thunder cats or for a laugh even the episodes of Super Mario's super show. There are so many but you see same ones all the time, that's my only complaint against the idea. Dont mean I wouldn't watch it if done, but hope for different things to react to.

What i love the most about this movie is how Hiccups goes against every the traditional manly things from his culture (and ours). He show us a masculinity that is sensible, sensitive, empatheti, non dependent of physical straight and gross, and still courageous and honorable.
I love that one of the primary themes in this one is the concept of humility. When Hiccup takes credit for them flying Toothless gives him a WTF look and chucks him off. At the end Toothless doesn’t reveal that he saved Hiccup until Stoick apologizes. It’s important and always there in the background.
It works both ways in the scene where they try the prosthetic tail for the first time. Hiccup is the only one who knows that his initial design won't stay extended in the slipstream, because Toothless can't see it. Toothless bucks Hiccup for sounding cocky, but quickly learns the hard way that he still can't fly without Hiccup's help.
NO SPOILER COMMENT: I cried at the end of HTTYD 3 because it was the end of an era and the conclusion of one of my favorite childhood movies. I can't wait to see how you react.
And not just any cat, I think it was the head designers cat that would be in the office when he was, so they constantly had refrences to how Toothless should walk and interact with things. You can totally see the influence in the eyes, with how they change shape depending on how focused Toothless is.

Everyone talks about Toothless and Hiccup (for good reason). But the relationship with Astrid is JUST as great. In the whole series she is there to support. She'll stand up for him but also back away and let him lead. She'll show loyalty to her king like in 3 where she was the first to remove the saddles. But she is definitely her own strong role model. The most impactful moment to me, still, is when Toothless is being lifted onto the ship, and Hiccup and Stoic make eye contact briefly, and the sadness that Hiccup has on his face sums the entire scene up completely.
One of my favorite things about these movies is that Toothless' behavior was based mostly off of cats. The hunting prowl, the pouncing and sitting, all that such.
These are some of my favourite animated films. Everything from the characters, to the music, to the animation itself is just great. I'm so glad you watched this, and you have two more to go!
Designing Toothless has been long and hard ( for what I remember ), but the team working on it made an incredible job, taking inspiration on few animals ( cat stays the most recognizable ) and succeeding on making him look incredibly cute while sometimes scary/badass. His movements and expressions are pure gold
Toothless and Hiccup are probably my favorite duo of all time. Also, this movie even made my 50 yr old mother cry! It's so well-written. Can't wait to see you react to the other ones :))
The best part is when Toothless is helping Hiccup walk again and you can both see their disabilities with his tail and Hiccup's leg. Something very important that she skipped past:: when Stoic tells Hickup "You're not my son", he walks out of the door, and we actually see him outside, instantly regretting what he just said. It's a moment that shows that Stoic isn't just a loudmouth, but a father. He feels like he shouldn't have said that, but his pride won't let him take it back. It humanizes him in a way that makes his later turnaround more believable.

Definitely YES to the whole trilogy. It’s a must.

"Toothless is such a cutie!"- yup, and that's why my daughter has 2 dolls of him. And, you'd better watch the sequels!!!
My wife considers Toothless to be the absolutely cutest sock puppet she's ever seen. 😀
Gobber's singing line is one of the funniest I've ever heard.
"I got my axe and I got my mace and I love my wife with the ugly face; I'm a Viking through and through."
LOL Gets me every time.
People think Astrid hated Hiccup; but remember, when she first saw Toothless, she tried to DEFEND Hiccup and told him to run from what she thought was a wild dragon. Just something to think about.
Yesss
I like to think that the title is about taming your inner insecurities and transforming it into something amazing.
That's how moody Toothless is, he'll train you on how he likes to be treated. He's definitely a cat.

"He's built different" probably the first person to ever say that about hiccup
Well in a village where everyone is built different, no one's really built different... so hiccup, in that way... is... you know...... built different. lol
@@jeslan9773 I don't know, I don't think people in the village are built different. They're all built exactly like a brick shithouse.
@@eskreskao LOL. Well atleast hiccup ain't built like a brick shithouse.
It sounds like a “I’m not fat, I have big bones” kind of excuse. 😂
I think she meant to say that he's "wired" different, which is to say he thinks differently as opposed to physique

Hiccup: No one has ever killed a Night Fury, that's why im going to be the first.

At the time, berk was not a big Village, the neighbors knew cuz they all had the same nest issue but berk got reputation after the nest is eleminated and some defenders of berk, race to the edge stuff happened. So their sources was small and night furies are really an apex predetor, only hunters are likely to even survive
@Niko They found a light fury, which is a sub species so technically yes, they are extinct.
Nice catch : )
Me too im still crying over that song
I love how they based Toothless' movements off of a cat. It's so perfect.
And not just any cat, I think it was the head designers cat that would be in the office when he was, so they constantly had refrences to how Toothless should walk and interact with things. You can totally see the influence in the eyes, with how they change shape depending on how focused Toothless is.
@@TheMrsmartass13 that’s awesome to know! As a dog person myself, I always associated him with a dog, but I’d mostly say that’s due to his expressive faces
You mean purrrrrrfect?
In an interview I saw, it was the designer's first cat - so its behavior and movement were still a new, novel, fascinating thing to him.
I can see not just cat movement and behavior, but some dog is in there too. It's kind of a mix of both IMO.

I was just as impressed with that relationship. Even more every time I watch it. Such good character development/interaction.
