    What I really like is the difference between hiccup and his mother. His mother said she "couldn't" kill a dragon, in the first movie hiccup said he "wouldn't". Hiccup's answer implies that, if he wanted to kill a dragon, he could. Valka's answer implies she can't physically do it. That is what makes hiccup a great leader. He can do bad things but chooses not to.

      And that's also why Drago is a great villain to me, because he's the representation of what Hiccup COULD have been if he COULD HAVE killed a Dragon.

    • @kevinw.6177
      @kevinw.6177 11 місяців тому +15

      To be fair, I'm pretty sure they never show any human kill a single dragon in the series, or use anything besides blunt force or tranqs, so it could be argued none of the Vikings or their rivals could/would kill a dragon. Chalk it up to them technically being "kids movies" but I did always find it interesting that for all of the talk of killing dragons, the only on-screen dragon deaths are attributed to Red Death (queen) in movie 1 and Drago's alpha in movie 2.

    • @mellyq92
      @mellyq92 11 місяців тому +29

      @@kevinw.6177while we dont see them killing they talk about it enough that you know that its a big part of their culture. its even a right of passage for the best student to be awarded the honor of killing their first dragon in front of the whole village. lines like "they've killed hundreds of us" "and we've killed thousands of them" "I should have just killed that dragon" "most of us would have why didn't you?". I think they make it pretty clear without being graphic that they were capable and willing and have done it multiple times.

    One could make the argument that Stoick was so reluctant to accept Hiccup's relation with Toothless in the first film because he had PTSD attacks to Drago and was worried that Hiccup would turn out like him.

      He also saw first hand that his wife fought for dragon/human coexistence and it ended in her death and nearly the death of Hiccup. Like he knows it failed, which is why he’s so adamant in the first film that the only way is to kill dragons. And when Hiccup changed his world view, a part of him hoped that his wife was alive somewhere since they were both right, which is why he was so grateful when he laid eyes on her again.

    My favorite thing about these movies is that they do the thing that animation rarely seems to do, at least not as well. There's growth and aging the likes of which you rarely see animated. It's clear that hiccup is older in the movie and he's damn near a full grown adult in the third. It gives that feeling you got with the Potter films, growing up with the characters year to year.

    • @ncard00

      I grew up watching star wars the clone wars in danish (language of Denmark), and the woman voicing Ahsoka in the danish dub also voices Astrid, recognized the voice immediately the first time I watched HTTYD, so everytime I watch these movies or the show, or watch that actress in anything live action danish film or show, I just hear Ahsoka’s voice. Love both the danish version and Ashley Eckstein’s Ahsoka equally though.

      I also like that they removed the makeup from Astrid’s design, along with the rest of the women. That’s also something you rarely see in animation. Women are often just automatically designed with eyeliner, eyeshadow, etc. No matter the culture or time period they’re portraying.

Hiccup and Astrid's relationship is adorable, Valka is a great character and addition to the cast, Drago is such an unstoppable force of a villain, Eret's redemption feels earned, Stoick's death was extremely emotional and impactful, (it still makes me cry,) the climax is just plain perfect, and as always, the animation and musical score are fantastic. I’m actually glad that they were unsuccessful in changing Drago’s mind, because it’s a lesson of the real world. Obviously, trying to have peaceful communications is always preferred and should be the first step, but there are some people that just cannot be reasoned with no matter what. I felt this showed the contrast of people who are willing to accept and choose change like Stoic and the ones who aren’t, and sometimes, that’s just how life is.

    OR, more poetically speaking, despite her being the exact opposite of Hiccup's dad, she said the exact same thing as Hiccup's dad, perhaps hinting that they can be exact opposites on everything but that one thing remains the same, and maybe there's a reason.

    Stoic went out doing what he believed, protecting his own. I like the fact that he fought and looked desperate to get to Hiccup in time, it was beautifully done. The whole movie is just a beautiful film to look at but also to experience. I also love that characters don't act out of character just to further the plot, like what other movies do, they all act and react exactly as their characters would. Also, as well as being a coming of age story for Hiccup, it's a coming of age story for Toothless too, as they are around the same age, and they both rise to the challenge and grow into adulthood, with Toothless becoming the Alpha and Hiccup becoming the new Chieftain. yes based on a book. but the book is definitely more for kids. there is a lot of character building in the tv series "dragon riders of Berk" where they did a "Dragon of the Week" trope.

    The second I saw you guys reacting to the first movie I knew this one would make you cry. I cried just watching the reactions but I really do love the first two and really like the third. Stoics death and funeral was haunting and how the relationship between Hiccup and Toothless helped him through his grief.
    Also I regularly listen to the duet between Stoic and Valka.
    Also also I love Cate Blanchett and have yet to dislike anything she’s been in. Always top tier.

    As a Danish person (our ancestors were Vikings), seeing the traditional funeral for Stoic also made me cry. We Danes obviously don't burry our loved ones the same way anymore, but back in the age of Vikings it was a tradition to "burry" the chiefs and other high-ranked and respected Vikings (both men and women) by sending them to sea on a boat, and filling that boat with that person's favourite belongings. Then they would fire arrows/small catapults ignited by fire at the boat, so that the deceased person and their belongings would rise up to Valhalla by the burning flames. It was a one of the most honorable funerals you could give your loved ones.
    As a Dane, I grew up with stories of which famous Danish Vikings got such a funeral, as well as going to several museums that had blueprints of the boats used for this, as well as the belongings that were most often chosen to "accompany" the person to Valhalla (these were usually their favourite clothing, foods, favourite songs with their lyrics written on paper, weapons, and several gifts from their loved ones). Viking-ness is a very big part of our education, and Danish kids learn everything there is to know about Vikings and the time they lived in in great detail.
    I bet witnessing a real Viking funeral must have been a spectacular experience.

    I remember seeing the very first ever trailer for this movie, just showing a masked Hiccup flying with Toothless and it was just mesmerizing on its own with the visuals, music, everything. But what really blew me away was when they showed Hiccup's face after he took his mask off. The younger version of me seeing that for the first time just surprised the fuck out of me cause at that time, it was super rare to see an animated character aged up like that. It was pretty mind blowing to me lol I do like this movie, I dont think I like it as much as everyone else, but its still pretty damn good despite the flaws I see in it.

    It's so cool to see some continuity from the kids series make it to Movie #2 - particularly the trust missions. There was an entire episode dedicated to Toothless & Hiccup figuring out maneuvers mid-air; trusting that they'll "catch each other" instead of floundering like in Movie #1. The result is Toothless & Hiccup's entry scene here were they can have fun while free-falling, and when Toothless has to trust Hiccup's leadership while flying blindfolded.

    What I love the most about watching the movies is I get to THEN watch the animated shows, they're canon to the storyline and it really allows you to grow with the characters, including more background details and information about the dragons, character development, and most importantly, you get to witness their journey (from the first movie to the next).
    I just really love this series.

    Stoick and Valka reunited is my favorite scene in the entire trilogy. Its so real and human you completely forget youre watching an animated movie.
    I like how her guilt is portrayed, wanting to be justified by him screaming at her ( which she thinks she deserves and maybe does a little, depending on the point of view ).
    But hes just blinded by his love for her and the awe of having her back. Hes probably pissed, alot even. But lets be real thats how you initially would react.
    And yeah, then these a-hole moviemakers make us love Stoick more and more just to...
    Absolutely stunning movie :) 9.5/10

    45? You're still a bebby!! But seriously, happy birthday!
    I might have said this on the first one, but I wouldn't say this is necessarily better, but it DOES move the story forward beautifully, it shows the characters' growth brilliantly and the growth of all the relationships between everyone, it ups the stakes brilliantly without OVER-upping them, it's just a perfect example of how to do a sequel right.
    And the tears...ALL the tears....holy shit do I weep every damn time. When Valka realises who Hiccup is, her reunion with Stoick, Stoick's death and bot Hiccup's AND Toothless' reactions, Hiccup getting through to Toothless, the victory over the dark Alpha...So. Many. Tears.

    The first one was also nominated for best score. There are many reasons why I think (especially the first movie) might have the greatest soundtrack of all time and John Powell needs to be recognized as the power house of a composer that he is!
