I'm not sure if it's officially confirmed, but, while I too initially thought Hiccup lost his lower leg to the fire, it's actually that Toothless bit his leg in order to catch him and break his fall in time. What Stoick said was one of the worst things he could have said to Hiccup. They take great pride in their heritage. Many Scandinavian surnames are along the lines of Anderson, or Ericson. Which, literally, means son of Ander or Eric. To say Hiccup was not his son was to deny him the right to claim his lineage. He would be the lowest status person in his village, and by their beliefs, when he dies and if he goes to Valhalla, he cannot sit at the table of his ancestors. It's really just about the worst curse. Plus it means that Stoick's bloodline ends with him, unless he has, or adopts another child. So it is, entirely, fitting for Stoick to be shook by what he said.
And yes, it is nice to see people recognize his reaction, instead of just lambasting him for it.
Edit. As an aside, the part where they convert Astrid with the flight is more impactful than it appears. If you think about the time, flying would have been inconceivable to them. The highest anyone, probably, ever got off the ground would be to climb a tree. To be high enough to touch and get lost in the clouds, and look DOWN on a mountain, would be a view of the world from the perspective of the Gods. It would have been a, literally, life changing experience for her.

To be a little fair to Stoic, his fear for Hiccup was never that he wouldn't be a dragon killing warrior: it was that he would get himself or someone else killed trying to prove that he's something he isn't. If you listen to Stoic's conversation with Gobber, he says it pretty clearly: Hiccup doesn't know who he is or how to be it, Stoic doesn't know how to help him, and he's afraid he can't protect him. Does that excuse his behavior? Nope. But it does help one understand him better.

Understanding both of those things, his fear and role as the chief, is so important to him saving Hiccup and Toothless and apologizing. If they presented it as just "My son isn't the warrior I want him to be because he's tiny" the apology would be... Not totally hollow, but much less impactful. Stoic acts out of a want to keep everyone safe, which is why he goes back to save Toothless; he understands that trusting his son and the dragon is the key to getting everyone out safely. I've seen a few first reactions to httyd, and it's kind of upsetting how often Stoic's character is misunderstood because of its more subtle reveal.
Sorry, I know I'm preaching to the choir, but Stoic really feels like a linchpin in the whole story to me.

Toothless knew Hiccup was okay the whole time, but when Stoic gets close, instead of uncovering Hiccup right then, he looks at Stoic, waits for the apology and THEN unfurls his wings to show everyone that Hiccup is safe. Like he was fully okay with letting Stoic think his son was dead if he didn't show how truly sorry he was to toothless himself, because saying it to Hiccup wasn't enough for him, he had to hear it too and it had to be sincere.

Some facts about this franchise in case your interested:
10:42 This "old woman" is Gothi, she is the oldest viking in the village and acts as the village's doctor when they are sick. I don't think I've ever heard her talk before throughout the series before either.
Toothless was based on a lot of animals but took a lot of inspiration from cats as you thought.
The dragons hate eels because they cause them to hallucinate once eaten and can't control their fire blast.
15:24 This grass is called Dragon Nip in their universe and is the equivalent to Cat Nip
On the original book Toothless was actually the size of the Terrible Terror (tiny dragon) but they changed it in the movie.
16:44 The amount of people that left is the same amount of people that returned, just less ships.
29:04 The strap that's across Toothless' head keeps his mouth closed enough to not allow him to shoot his fire.
The big dragon at the end of the movie is called the Red Death, she is evil. The Red Death makes the other dragons give her food and if they don't, she kills and eats them.
When Toothless dives from a high point and makes that whining-like noise, he is flying at the speed of sound. So when he fires one of his shots at this speed it also creates more force to the blast that caused the Red Death to end up falling over.
    Sorry this was long.

Toothless forgetting those aspects is another reason why his domesticated friendship with Hiccup is so admirable.
    Dragon facts:
Also, all dragons do have hidden gills that allow them to breathe underwater a bit longer than humans, which is why toothless was able to stay down there for so long.

My personal opinion when I think about it is that she was just really annoyed that she couldn't figure out what Hiccup was doing and it confused her. Let's face it, Astrid is extremely competitive and if Hiccup hadn't changed his methods Astrid probably would have won and she probably knew that too. She's not much of a gloater or has any ego but compared to everyone else it's not that hard to put together that she probably would have won. To see that opportunity get taken away from her suddenly in a way she couldn't figure out probably is what got her so mad. Once she understood she was all good and completely supported Hiccup. It was the confusion that got her mad.

    35:10 btw, Hiccup’s leg didn’t exactly get burned off lol… 👀
It’s never directly stated/confirmed, but it’s pretty heavily implied that Toothless was the one who damaged/bit off Hiccup’s leg. (And if you’re eagle eyed enough on the falling scene you’ll see how much sense this makes. Hiccup falls headfirst into the flames, so his lower body was least likely to be touched by fire. Furthermore you’ll see Toothless shotgunning for his legs, and in the very last moment you see his head seemingly specifically lock onto the leg Hiccup loses. So basically he grabbed him by that leg with his jaws and pulled him into his wings to protect him, but the terminal velocity they were falling at and general force the action required would have damaged/torn the leg). Thus mirroring Hiccup being the cause of his own amputation. Everything with these two is meant to parallel one another. And their shared disability also allows them to work more fluidly together as a team
As you can see, 14 years as a fan of this series has given me (and a lot of others) a lot of time to think about every tiny detail 😂

Also either before you watch the second movie or perhaps shortly after you might consider watching the series Dragons: Riders of Berk, followed by Defenders of Berk and finally Race to the Edge. Not only do they take place between the first and second Dragon movies and thus kinda show how Hiccup and the rest of Berk get from where they were at the end of the first film to what they were like at the start of the second, but they are among the best film-to-television adaptations out there if not the best animated series period. Even if you don't feel like you can react to it you should at least watch it on your own time, for yourself if nothing else as it's really truly great.

Totally love how Hiccup learned all about how dragons are and think and like and hate from Toothless, and how he looked like an absolute boss in training and all were just....'wtF.... Hiccup is doin this?..." beauty, hehehe.

29:05 The reason Toothless didn't try to escape the restraints and burn down the ship was because Hiccup asked him not to hurt his father. Even though Stoick and the Vikings were ready to hurt, capture, and even kill him, Toothless trusted Hiccup enough to listen to his request not to hurt his community, even though he wasn't there.

You're totally right, for the scenes at the beginning with toothless's new tail, the animators based it off of taping something to one of their cats tails and seeing what it did

The scene where damaged toothless tries to escape the new tail is based off the lead animator tying a kleenex to his black cat’s tail and watching it react. Frame for frame the same

10:53 fun fact: toothless’ movements were based on gabe hordos (the supervising animator)’s cat.
another fun fact: when toothless recalls a bit before moving into hiccup’s hand, that was a glitch that the filmmakers liked so much it was kept.

In the "The Downed Dragon" scene where Toothless is trapped and the camera pans across his wing to reveal his eye open, his eye being open was originally a glitch too and they decided to keep it that way

HTTYD is definitely one of my most favorite trilogies. Also, as an owner of a black cat, I highly encourage you to get one if possible. I actually have two cats. The black one is a male named Midnight, and the other one is a gray striped cat named Laila. Midnight is older, and he's super chill and just wants you to pet him all the time. Laila is younger and is a total menace.

As a long time fan of Scottish actor - Gerard ( Gerry) Butler, when I found out he was doing this animated movie, myself (and his fanbase) thought it was great! Of course I never heard of the kids books that was based on but the story sounded good. 😊 Loved the movie when it finally came out, GB was perfect as Stoick. At the time I thought it was a bit goofy that only a few of the Scandinavian village has a Scottish accent lol. But not like they were doing a documentary lol.
Vikings are typically Nordic/Scandinavian, and they did invade Scotland and etc. but left eventually. Shetland do pretty much consider themselves more Scandinavian than Scottish. Anyways, I watched a behind the scenes video yrs ago on the making of the movie and the Animation ppl and etc. made Toothless basically a mix of Cat / Dog. His general look was very Cat like, then some bit of his personality was Dog like. Anytime I see Toothless, he reminds me of a Black cat I once had, named Tabou. Same green eyes as the Dragon. ❤ FYI....Black cats/kittens are one of the last color types to get adopted. 😢 I love Black cats and have had a few. So IF your dog wouldn't harm one- Adopt a cute black kitten!😊

I am so glad you noticed Stoick staggering back after the "you're not my son" line.
It is such an important detail and perfectly informs his decisions in the third act when he comes around as well.
Alot of reactors don't seem to notice that moment so it was a relief to see you notice.
