I can't believe how many people don't like this album or it's songs, this album is so heavy and dark, I freaking love this song its one of the heaviest songs slipknot has put out, and the guitar was straight up growling; and was groovy af. This album was released in 2014, it was after Paul Gray's death, and this album is mostly about Paul, and the grief they are experiencing after his death. Paul died of a drug overdose that the doctor has prescribed him, and also this doctor has killed multiple other people for the same reason he gave them the inappropriate amount of prescriptions that resulted in their deaths.
Well , he was prescribing opiates to opiate addicts,he didnt give them the wrong dose of anything,he gave drug addicts what they wanted. At the time, they wouldve been begging him to give them those pills, its not a situation where someone with no drug history walked in and he gave them too many pills and it killed them and they had no part in their own death, they were addicted and desperate and really if anything, he kept them from having to buy pills and heroin on the street which wouldve had a much higher risk of accidental overdose. They SHOULD just give drug addicts what they want so at least they are getting the real thing and wont accidentally take a pill that's full of fentanyl that was only supposed to be 30 mg of oxycodone. And most people that are abusing prescription drugs are mixing them all, multiple different types of prescription drugs. Thats what usually kills them..he wasnt just taking pills from this doctor and if he was,he definitely took more than it said on the bottle and mixed then with other drugs which he also took too many of. This narrative that people were prescribed more than they shouldve been isnt entirely true. They wouldve been WICKED HAPPY to get those drugs at the time, they just fucked up and took too many ON THEIR OWN. He didnt say "oh take this much" and then THAT DOSE killed them. No. That's not accurate. Come on kids.
@@jerrybergsteinbaum8008 yo, like I don't want to be an ass or anything but I don't think this is the time for all that. Paul had his issues and they resurfaced one way or another, that's all it is. He's still missed dearly regardless of what the situation is.
The grey chapter is my favorite!!!! The whole album is about loss... And recovery, and finding out how to smile again.... Yes iowa, awesome!!! Slipknot album, awesome, all hope is gone.... Ehhh, subliminal vs, transition album
If I'm not mistaken, this song is talking about the guys regrouping after Paul gray died and how they are trying to get past their grief and get back to where they were before as a killer unit (hence approaching original violence). This album has a ton of meaning behind it given what the guys went through at the time. I know you guys have too many suggestions than you know what to do with but some others from this album with strong meaning would be "XIX" (the intro of the album where it sounds like them acknowledging that life moves on and they need to too), "skeptic" (the band unleashing their aggression and grief after losing Paul, this is really a love letter to him) and "goodbye" (which sounds like them coming to terms with the situation, where the song flows into 'nomadic' which is another great one).
Hollywood, I appreciate you because you appreciate this music in the exact same way I do. You were feeling all the twists and turns that they threw in there and I'm here for it. Also I demand more bass solos, the one in this song was on another fucking level!
I saw Slipknot at Carolina Rebellion in 2015. When they played this song, I lost my shit. I don't care. I cried a little bit. I'm not going to lie. I love this song. This is the first Slipknot record I bought. Go see them live when you get a chance.
Jay had been a big fan of slipknot since he was a kid. I'm pretty sure that should've also helped him with learning slipknot music He went from being a kid with dreams to playing with his idols.
I absolutely LOVE this song!!! Its a perfect song imo...I listen to it relentlessly....A very underratted song that no one ever seems to talk about it. Thank you for reviewing it!!! I think the lyric about losing a brother is in reference to Paul. Corey was very, very close to him. I watched a video of Corey getting a tattoo to commemorate Paul and he broke down sobbing talking about him. So heartbreaking....👍🏻 both incredibly talented drummers!!!
Jay stepped into the audition for slipknot without having a clue who he was playing for and jammed 3 hours of the bands songs on spot before offered to start recording for "the grey chapter"
Love Slipknot and all the reactions to their songs. Here’s a suggestion for you guys that may open new doors… Devildriver doing “country heroes” I don’t recall you guys doing a reaction to Devildriver, so if you do, enjoy!
Ok so first thing, I have been a maggot since 1999 when the self titled album came out. For me Joey will always be number #1, with his number and placement. However Jay has proven time and again that he can hold his own. He has his own style but can still can still deliver on the older stuff and that's about the best you can ask for as a fan. So for me it's both. As far as Jay being a fan of Slipknot, a quick search on Google would show you a kid Jay dressed up as Corey Taylor and taking pics with the band way back when! So yeah I'd say he was a fan for a while before he joined. Lol. As Joey was a massive Metallica fan growing up, which is why he was able to fill in so easily. So far as I can tell, the reason Jay doesn't do the floating drums is because that was Joey's thing. Kinda the same concept as why new members don't get numbers. That was something the original 9 did and it's seen as their thing. Joey, Clown and Paul started the band and Joey is on the first 5 albums (including the demo album, Mate Feed Kill Repeat, which was pre Corey vocals). This was the first album after Paul died and Joey departed. There was a lot of speculation that this song and another from this album (The Negative One) were directed at Joey and the circumstances of him leaving the band. Corey has denied these suspicions and stated that this album was about Paul and the band dealing with his death. However when you break down the lyrics to this song, it's pretty easy to draw those conclusions about it being about Joey. It even sounds like that to me. However Corey has stated numerous times that it's not so who knows I guess.

Hi guys, Happy Thanksgiving, Happy Slipknot Saturday with a great one :) The whole album is awesome, I really liked it. There is so much melody and honesty on it. I highly recommend If rain is what you want, Nomadic, Custer, The negative one. "Stay sic" and take care of yourselves.
Can't really compare them, they both have their signature sound. Joey was Slipknot, his drumming brought Slipknot to where they are now. But since Joey's departure, the remaining guys in Slipknot decided to take Jay and V-man to fill in both Joey and Paul's shoes and I respect them for that. With Joey and Paul gone, Slipknot ventured into a newer sound and Jay brought that. I honestly like their older sound more since I grew up with that but overall, the new Slipknot still kicks ass.
I love them both! Joey filled in for Metallica, but Jay also filled in for his dad with Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band when his dad was on Conan O'Brian. They are both amazing.
and after about 20 min of playing with the band they were like if you want it the job is yours...but i cant imagine the nerves jay had going on stage the first time in place of joey but he crushed it
For me there is no competition. The original 9 will always be my favourite Slipknot. The self titled album and Iowa are the best in my opinion and even though I enjoy the newer ones too its not the same. Awesome song and reaction!

joey was on the first 4 albums and jay used to be in a NY hardcore band called madball and then he was in a slipknot cover band and slipknot is his favorite band his dad took him to see slipknot when he was a kid and he was dressed like corey and got to meet the band....so when they called him up for tryouts jay could already play most of the stuff joey did

It is impossible to compare Joey to Jay and Jay to Joey. In my opinion . I can relate to the lyrics a lot. I bet most of us can. We all just want to be heard, seen and understood. The lyrics is about honest communication and redemption. Slipknot is above any genre in music. Multi tasking. I went to Slipknot's first live perfomance back in the days. I fell in Love at the first sound wave. And i still am.

@@scottlefaivre6889 Jay really wanted to play for them. Kinda like Cory when he first saw slipknot. He said he would be their singer. 18 months later.... now that's drive. Both of them.
A quick attempt to be peacemaker. Obviously Joey was special and brilliant, his usage of extreme metal techniques is part of what set Slipknot apart and will always be a key aspect of their brilliance in the albums that made them giants. For Jay I must say that with him Slipknot have released some really brutal tracks, the guy can play stuff with a meaty slab of death inspiration. Let’s not be children and say together that both are extremely talented. Everyone is entitled to their opinion and opinions are never right or wrong they are simply the view of a person. Side note anyone throwing shit is shit.
I think they are both very similar in playing style. Joey was a little faster popping the heads. I tend to favor Joey a little more cause he was an o.g. but Jay is pretty good too.
The Gray Chapter was the album that introduced me to Slipknot. Had Nero Forte and Red Flag in my playlist sitting idle for about a year then I decided to check out their discography more and immediately became a Maggot. That being said, I simply do not understand the schism between the Joey (RIP) fans and the Jay fans. Joey was a pioneer and a fucking genius, but let's be honest here and acknowledge that Jay has stepped up to the plate matching Joey's energy and style extremely well. Not Jay's fault the band's sound as a whole has shifted, dude goes in hard and he goes in taking zero prisoners on those drums as if he was Joey's own prodigy.
Literally Jay was inspired by Joey. That being said, I believe Jay had more formal training since his dad his Max Weinberg of the freaking E Street Band. But Joey is mostly Self Taught with some jazz lessons mixed in and managed to accomplish what he did! A FUCKING LEGEND in metal! Comparing the two is like comparing a 1970 camero with a 2020 camero. Its just useless and not fair.
Actually I don't believe Jay started playing until he was around 14 and went into their basement and put together a set from his dad's stuff and taught himself in the beginning so, aside from what he's gotten from Max, he's had no formal training like lessons or anything. But I guess you could argue that since his dad is a professional drummer, he has gotten formal training. Essentially though, drumming wasn't pushed on him and he decided to pick it up on his own later than many do
When Paul Gray died, so sad. When Joey died, I knew him, he was my favorite knot, he was number 1. And I still cry , I just can’t compare jay to Joey. Joey was so so fast, you had to really watch to see his hands move. Still hurts me in the pit of my stomach. Fast, unique, a Murderdoll who introduced me to Wednesday 13….. and the rest was history….. and a hell of a lot of good memories!
You guys should react to more Gwar songs, The Salamanizer,Maggots,Sick of You,Immortal Corrupter,Bring Back The Bomb and Madness at the Core of Time are all great songs to start with.
The line “I don’t wanna watch another brother fucking die” is directly referring to Paul. That entire album is named after Paul and very much made in memory of him. OOH LISTEN TO SKEPTIC NEXT!!!
"AOV stands for Approaching Original Violence . The album as a whole is the story of the last four years for this band, so AOV is basically about looking at each other and dealing with a lot of the issues that we've had , to try to bury those hatches, so we can get back up on our feet. Because you can't stay together until you figure out what the issue is. You have to get on the same page to be able to move forward - it's just really about finding a way to stand on that common ground and not only stand on it, but to take that territory back and guard it as your own " - Taken from Slipknot's own explaining to these lyrics and this song. Not my copyright. It's like a redemption song.❤ It slaps so hard because it's personal.
Someone else made the comment that Joey was only ever playing at maybe 75-90% of his abilities whereas other drummers are at 100% trying to do the same thing (and possibly not succeeding). I can’t say that about Jay as I think it’s a thing where he grew up playing Slipknot songs so that shaped his playing and is why he can play what Joey did and write in a similar style.
A lot of this album is based around the loss of Paul Grey, Hence the name of the Album 5. The Grey Chapter. Personally I prefer Joey over Jay, but that being said Jay really kills it and is possibly the best possible to choice to have taken Joey's place.

Essentially though, drumming wasn't pushed on him and he decided to pick it up on his own later than many do
fukin' roller coaster mate!
You know it’s an absolute banger when Smokey is getting into it as much as Hollywood 😉🤘🏼
I'd love to how you guys would react to "Gently" by Slipknot. Especially the bridge section \m/
Great pick for slipknot Saturday! May I interest you in Heretic Anthem?
You guys need to react to Wherein Lies Continue!!! #Slipknot Saturday!!!
Born Treacherous (Live in Oslo)

Hey smokey. How much and how do I get one of those TT hats.. I'd rep that all over Michigan...🗑️🗣️4️⃣🧬
#1 JOEY JORDISON
Guys! Love your videos. You guys really need to check out Cane Hill. Trust me you’d love them. 🙏 much love and respect.
A lot of this album is based around the loss of Paul Grey, Hence the name of the Album 5. The Grey Chapter.
Personally I prefer Joey over Jay, but that being said Jay really kills it and is possibly the best possible to choice to have taken Joey's place.
