The original title of this song, 'Heartache And A Pair Of Scissors', is a little more self-explanatory. Also, the band did play this quite a bit back in the day, and was even more creepy when performed live. They would do an extended version that lasted twice as long, where the song would wind-down part-way through and Corey would go into an almost catatonic state and repeatedly say weird shit over and over, such as "Where is the life that you were promised?" and talk about shedding old skin to make way for new skin. They would also set each other on fire.
Yup, and these live versions were different at every performance as Corey would always improvise the break down sections, offering a different speech with each performance.
This reminds you of Daddy because this album was produced by the same person that produced KoRn's first album, Ross Robinson has a knack for pulling emotion out of singers
They were doing all kinds of unusual emoting on the first two records especially. I still think some of Corey's whines came from screaming until it hurt, but there were so many growly whines, anguished cries, heavy breathing & creepy whispers in his and the backing vocals.
They should've let Joey write more of the songs bro. This shit is dark, deranged, edgy, uncanny, and overall just creepy. Type of shit you'd expect to hear from an asylum patient in the middle of a severe suicidal psychosis episode. Sure does put the slipknot in Slipknot, that's for sure.
@@frankholmes4175 It makes sense that he did as the song and lyrics were written before Corey even joined the band... so it had to have been written by one of guys who was there early on.
@hi.com888 I don't know exactly where it starts, I just read that the last few lines were improvised by Corey, and that Joey wrote the rest. I think it was a quote on Genius lyrics if I remember correctly.
When I'm in a dark place mentally, which is very often these days, I feel a sense of calm and happiness watching you guys check out and enjoy new music - especially as I don't have any friends to share my love of music with. Thank you from the UK
Correct me if I'm wrong but I thought I heard Joey wrote this song. It makes Corey even more deranged at the time if he is singing a song about something that wasn't his personal story. The story of this band is quite inspirational. Corey especially. He has been full sober for like 10 years including drugs. He used to be a mess. His soberness has actually helped the band long term because he sounds better than ever. This song shows the raw emotion. Can always hear Corey breathing in his first 2 albums it adds intensity. This side of the band was "scarier" then alot of death metal to me at the time. It was like hearing a mental breakdown.
You are correct, Joey and Paul wrote the music and lyrics are mostly Corey. The dumb Clown did have some input (fukin keg hit). But earlier albums all members got equal credit.
Corey said that the reason it’s his favorite song is because when played live the second half of the song is a free style between the whole band and they just feed off each other’s vibes. You know at that point everything going on is completely original and real. Because of that he gets to do whatever he wants with his vocals depending on what’s going on with the crowd and the others in the band. Every time you hear the song live with a never like the last.
Also side note, Corey was also sexually abused when he was 10 or 11 by an older neighborhood kid. Now I don't know and he has never said (as far as I know) that the releasing part on this song had anything to do with that but it wouldn't be surprising if it was. So 🤷♀️
@@RKOwarlord well I guess some lines like I SEE YOU FUCKING ME can be taken out of context and some came to the conclusion that metabolic is about when THAT happened
This song is insane. It actually has some death metal heaviness at some parts. Slipknot were definitely on the heavier side of nu metal with their first album.
I would say they used some sludge and noise rock elements on self titled. Lot of noise actually, which made the album so heavy and chaotic. Distortion everywhere as well and some hardcore/punk elements.
i was 24, just out of the military, and recently divorced when this album came out. this was my favorite song on it because of the douchebag ex. it helped me vent a ton of frustration 😉
it's about a bad girlfriend he had that abused him mentally emotionally and physically then lied to Corey Taylor then left Corey Taylor then wanted to kill her then wanted to kill himself Mick Thompson said that his riffing in the song was influenced by black metal and death metal
This is what I was talking about in a comment on a previous video, this song is still heavy but leans a little more towards plain creepy and deranged. From what I can tell, every Slipknot album seems to have one. They basically just let Corey go unhinged and just release! They're not as chaotic on the later albums as they are on this one and Iowa. They used to perform this song live a lot back in the old days and during the second part where is goes insane on the album, Corey has said he just would kinda go into this trance and just start saying shit or would just start vocalizing and it usually ended with him being set on fire (usually thanks to Sid and/or Clown, yes they would set his legs on fire) and/or Corey laying on the stage, completely incoherent and exhausted! Now that you guys have heard this, can't wait till y'all hit the song 'Iowa'!!
The song next is "iowa" next? here's corey quote from what I said about some of the shit he did before recording it, Corey Taylor- “The biggest memory for me was recording ‘Iowa‘ naked, cutting myself up with a broken candle. That was probably the one memory that comes out. It was the one time that producer Ross Robinson didn’t come in the vocal booth with me. He probably wouldn’t have had a good time in there with me naked!”
oh man this is one of my favorites, not because of the lyrics because this song is creepy af lol but from a musical standpoint, it just pulls me in. I think in an interview somewhere Corey said that this was his favorite song because they would play it the same as the recording all up until the "second part" (honestly don't know where that is) and just improvise it. every single night they played it. and I think he liked the fact that he didn't know what was going to happen when they got to that part is what was exiting about it. Imo this the "Iowa" off this album. in fact I would actually recommend Iowa next:) Joey actually wrote these lyrics. r.i.p Joe
this and Metallica's "One" are my all-time favorite songs. this is probably the only song that i could replay over and over and not get tired of it at all.
Fun Fact: Joey Jordison wrote the lyrics to Scissors.. Scissors is my favorite Slipknot song. When I first heard it, I decided to listen to it because I heard Joey wrote the lyrics and I wanted to hear it. I hated it at first. But as I heard it again and again, everything in me connected to it. Now it’s my favorite Slipknot song. This was a great reaction. Keep up the good Slipknot content!
Still my favorite Slipknot song all these years later... I think you were right when you said that these Scissors are about cutting ties, and the internal torment this person caused and the primal freedom felt upon release by cutting those ties. "You purge, you burn, I don't need you anymore, it's time"
Gotta love scissors. The consensus of the meaning of the songs meaning is that it's about drug addiction, suicide, and cutting the flesh of your arm. Joey I believe wrote it. Very dark and twisted but great song🤘 One cool thing about this song is when they used to perform it live is the second half of the song performed live it sounds different everytime. For your next track to react to gotta check out either Gematria ( The Killing Name), Wherein Lies Continue, or Birth of the Cruel. That video and track Smokey dropped yesterday is 🔥🔥🔥. One last thing if Michael Jackson was a villain then he'd be every kids nightmare if you catch my drift 🤣🤣🤣.✌️
Suggested this a while back. So glad you guys finally did it! First time I heard this I was in high school, high af blasting this in my car and it blew my mind
Most of the speculation on Scissors is that Corey is talking about his times when using heroin(cutting the flesh) and the lines about "It is time" references that it is time to get high again. I think he let everything out on this song to kick his addiction. The darkest sluipknot song IMO that feels more like 'daddy' is Iowa, which you guys really should check out if you want to hear a terrifying Slipknot song. Especially if you try to figure out what was going on in the studio during the recording of it.
I think I’ve commented this before; but this album, musically, sounds a lot like a Korn album to me, especially their first (featuring Daddy). Same producer too! The next song that popped up was Iowa, I highly recommend that one next. Scissors was the last track from their first album, Iowa is the last track on their second. Both fantastic albums/tracks!!
I think I've seen somewhere that this song is about man ripping off his own skin and lyrics were written by Joey. That female person he is talking to is his own skin, making it even crazier. Speaking about Corey, I assume he might like it that much because it's very different from their standard sound, but who knows. Also, spirit of this song is kinda closer to pre-Corey Slipknot, so it's kinda ironic that Corey names it his favorite.
I luv the almost silence on your faces at the end😆 If you wanna hear a deep poetic insight of a serial killer, its done no better than in Cradle of Filth's Lord Abortion.
Late on the video lol, but from what I’ve read, those moans and cries that you hear in the song are real. He was deep into his addiction and trauma. Those cries are from him trying to actually physically hurt himself in the studio. None of this is faked and that’s why it’s so raw and disturbing. He legit was trying to hurt himself while recording……let that sink in….
This is one of the creepiest songs ever, and this is my favorite Slipknot song. This song is amazing. Happy Saturday Maggots! Great reaction guys, as always! Slipknot forever! 🤟🏻🐐♾
First time I heard this song along with you guys and I must say there is talent in making such uncomfortable music. I get why it's probably his favorite song, he unleashed all his anger on this shit. Well, then came Iowa but yeah this was arguably more disturbing than Iowa but I think you should give that a listen too and decide for yourselves.
I agree with Big Homie Steve The Metal Head, "Iowa" is definitely one you needto listen to. You can hear and feel the pain Corey is going through. It will give you chills the entire time. Only a true Slipknot fan could appreciate it. Its not a banger, its pure art.
y’all should definitely react to Iowa next it’s dark and very interesting and it’s one of my favorite songs ever by Slipknot & correct me if i’m wrong Maggot’s but Corey took 2 takes of recording that song and when he was recording it he was Drunk and got naked and would cut himself with a Broken Candle glass. Definitely recommend listening
Yea I was 12 when this album came out...instantly they became my favorite. I think my reaction was the same as you guys for this song haha ...glad you did this song ...next IOWA 😁
And that right there is how you finish an album 👌👌 This and the track Iowa are incredibly dark . I’d love to see them do Iowa at some point, 14 minutes of madness
One of my favorites. They have a bunch more raw outside the mold styled songs to come get. Some will have u saying WTF but will be your favorites one day I promise
If you really want to top this one next Saturday, do Slipknot - "Iowa" from the Iowa album. When Corey did the vocals, he did it in two takes, covered in his own vomit and blood by the time he finished....
Me again, suggesting y’all to react to My Bloody Valentine, Ride and Slowdive to get you started on Shoegaze. Something y’all surely love! ______ This song is the closest to an anxiety attack I’ve heard. Difficult to hear for me but I can see the mastery behind it as they convey that horrible sensation so perfectly.
this is one of the songs i wish they would play live! i’ve seen them 3 times and they are crazy good! but i feel like it’s such a bad ass song that’s left out of the set!
There is a reason a lot of people say that new Slipknot is unrecognisable compared to old Slipknot, lol. I love the self titled album, in fact until "We Are Not Your Kind" Came out, it was my favourite slipknot album by far. Good Reaction guys.
Im so happy that yall do alot of videos for slipknot because i have been a fan since the day they started but one band you should listen to is lorna shore to the hell fire
I would have thought the old ''People tend to teach kids not to run with...'' would have sufficed as a question. That said, without your approach I wouldnt have heard a guy, in a scenario where he is a kid in school, think of a fucking compass before scissors as an essential item XDDD Either way, I didnt know if you would dig it, but the sheer culture shock on your faces the last couple of minutes was unexpected and priceless - best reaction to this song ever! How about dipping your toe even in some More groovy harshness? If youre interested, then Definitely check out "Bleak" by the sonic punishers known as *Frontierer* - its an experience, man.
🦋The Live Video for Scissors is definitely worth a watch guys.. 😏Your Faces At The Ending. I agree this song does give the Korn song Daddy, or The Disturbed song Down With The Sickness, kind of vibes. All Understandably the Lyrical Art of a Terrible Reality. I'm curious as to what song you choose next after this banger for next Slipknot Saturday!
For corey to get into this state of mind he cut himself, pissed on puked on himself and just some wild shit and then went and recorded naked to feel the most vulnerable backed into a corner rage like this. Do some research to the way they got into all the raw emotion and energy needed to embody a song like this among some others. There is sooo much they overcame and been through to make the music they have. Their o.g. music was to say fuck the world we arent taking it. Their way to heal with the maggots.
I honestly cant think of a deeper and just raw song from slipknot than scissors yall did not practice as they say save the best for last but its so kick ass you reacted to it, i guess a second follow up would be prosthetics from the same album ,, personally my second favorite song from the album.
FINALLY!!!!!! That does something to me everytime!!!!!! Gotta listen to Prosthetics next!! The whole second half of the self titled album is absolutely insane!!!
I recommend surfacing and the heretic anthem if you want angry and crazy slipknot. If you like the signing and the slower stuff then listen to Till we die. it's from their fourth album.
Rico was a former cop and also American Gladiator before performing a "flamboyant " wrestler on TV . 57 seconds in BAM ! LOL . I do this every wrestling question ! HAHA
This song is so creepy in all the right ways. The slow build up of dread & disturbing atmosphere. Great point y’all made too, it def has a lot of KoRn circa ‘94 vibes. You can hear the influence
This is by far and away my favorite, and the best Slipknot song. Hell id wager top top 10 greatest metal songs of ALL time! Id gladly fight, and die on that hill my friends! P.S. that last bit of vocals before the track cut off was actually Corey choking and vomiting from the pure aggression and emotion he recorded with.
It was the 29th February 2000. They were playing Manchester academy, England. They played scissors.. it was brutal!! I ducked myself up so bad at that gig (wasn’t even Drinking or anything) and I puked so hard afterwards! I was so messed up for the next 24 hours. Pure aggressive decent into physical and mental madness!! Yeah be been to plenty of shows, nothing comes close to that night!
After tackling scissors, I think it might be time for iowa. It's the logical next step and tbh, get ready because it's always an experience to listen to it. It's not often I'll put on iowa OR scissors but when I do, it has to be quiet, nothing going on and I just focus on the darkness of the music.
I’ve been a fan for a couple decades, but seeing you all get caught up in it like you do makes it new. Hearing these songs again like that is amazing. It’s awesome that you guys respect music and talent for exactly what it is without expectation. And for the love of all that is holy…. See them live!! You will not regret it. They’re on par with Tool. A totally different, but just as captivating type of energy. There’s is nothing quite like it. Stay awesome my friends!!🖤🤘
Scissors is mostly know for Corey completly losing his shit hahahah. Btw they used to set each other on fire during the live performances of this song.
In a way I kind of feel sorry for you guys that you didn’t get to hear this album when it first came out and listen to it over and over and get better every time you listen to it. this is one of the songs i wish they would play live! i’ve seen them 3 times and they are crazy good! but i feel like it’s such a bad ass song that’s left out of the set!
There is a reason a lot of people say that new Slipknot is unrecognisable compared to old Slipknot, lol. I love the self titled album, in fact until "We Are Not Your Kind" Came out, it was my favourite slipknot album by far.
Good Reaction guys.
You guys should react to Korn Blind with Joey Jordisan at Rock Am Ring 2007. Joey was incredible and was the reason I started listening to Slipknot.
Manson said this was his fave when the album came out too...this song and Prosthetics.
This was the song that introduced me to Slipknot 13 years ago, when I was 11.
Im so happy that yall do alot of videos for slipknot because i have been a fan since the day they started but one band you should listen to is lorna shore to the hell fire
Just wait till you hear Iowa. That song is more dark and disturbing than Scissors
I would have thought the old ''People tend to teach kids not to run with...'' would have sufficed as a question. That said, without your approach I wouldnt have heard a guy, in a scenario where he is a kid in school, think of a fucking compass before scissors as an essential item XDDD
Either way, I didnt know if you would dig it, but the sheer culture shock on your faces the last couple of minutes was unexpected and priceless - best reaction to this song ever!
All Understandably the Lyrical Art
of a Terrible Reality. I'm curious as to what song you choose next after this banger for next Slipknot Saturday!
Scissors and Prosthetics are the most creative Slipknot songs ever.
Tell'em Large Marge sent ya!
Your faces towards the end 🤯
🤣🤣🤣
The whole second half of the self titled album is absolutely insane!!!
this live is insane everytime
I can put it on repeat and bump it.
Love it when ya'll do old ish on SS!
Ahhh man just seen you say you don’t think they did this live. Good news…. Yes they did … and yes it was fucking awesome
I just discovered you guys and ima watch all the Slipknot Saturday vids for sure
This is one of those that grows more and more the more you listen to it, it’s so….fucking Slipknot 🤘🏻 an all time favorite for sure.
Always been my fav. Glad Corey caught up 😊
Jinjer also has a track called Scissors.
Slipknot at their best!!!
You should react to Slipknot - Iowa, that's another level. It's almost the same as this, but it's creepier. 🤟🏻🐐
You’re not wrong about Thriller. It freaked my little ass out when I was little
Hehe
Edward Scissorhands had… what on his hands? Blades?
I know he said Freddy Crugar but I find it amusing to think he said Scissorhands
Prosthetics slipknot for next slipknot Saturday
This was my first song 13 years ago and I've been listening to them since
In a way I kind of feel sorry for you guys that you didn’t get to hear this album when it first came out and listen to it over and over and get better every time you listen to it. To me, this is raw Slipknot and each album after diverted from that (as every other band does after their first) but this album is my favorite.
