I have been an avid hunting horn main since I first picked up the weapon back in Monster Hunter 4 and I have never looked back.
Capcom's decision to label the hunting horn as a "support" weapon left a somewhat bad taste in my mouth since it might give new players a wrong idea as to how the weapon should be used. The "support" role in video games is often - but not always - associated with a sort of passive playstyle that revolves around only buffing your team while leaving the damage dealing to them. It might also give the impression that the hunting horn is not viable for solo play.
This is wrong.
When you are using a hunting horn you are not a cheerleader supporting from the sides; you are in the heat of the fight attacking the monster's head to stun and break parts. Buffing your team is a major component in the hunting horn's kit, but it is not its sole purpose. It's damage output is incredibly high and it would be a waste to squander all that potential due to a "support" label.
The hunting horn is a marvelous and fun weapon that everyone should give a try when they get a chance.

As a heavy frontliner (lance/ dual blades) I worship decent horn users, they not only inflict KO IN my stead, but buff to give things like crucial stamina or attack buffs, highly underrated and underappreciated weapon users.
As a CB main, the earplugs they provide have saved many a discharge from being canceled by a roar.

add in the buffs and this thing can rip elder dragons a new one easier than most hammer users. seriously, i've seen people rip Gigante to shreds with the HH faster than i can with my charge blade.... granted i suck but still.

@@godsplayingfield With buffs is probably the strongest weapon together with guns. The problem is the skillcap necessary to hit monsters on the head while playing the right notes.

You have to line up songs to act as encore fuel (because encore does the best damage) as quickly as possible while sneaking in enough hits to create openings for encore to take it's course.
And you have to remember to roll or not roll out of encore to preserve momentum while keeping track of the current buffs in effect.
The easy part is the part you play some tunes pre battle.

Reach, stun, exaust, ridiculously OP buffs to ALL players, SnS speed, high DPS, doesn't bounce off the monsters.

Hahaha anything below healings (L) isnt worth and you're supposed to time your buffs so you dont get hit.

Its my favorite weapon in the game, so satisfying when you bash a monster in the head and it falls over, i spend all my fights yelling BONK at the TV..

So it's basically a hammer. A hammer that doesn't hit as hard but that gives you buffs. I'll take it.

Sounds nice even if it's connected to a little timing practice but oh well, you have that with every new weapon. Definitely will give it a try when the PC version comes out.

Me when I first started MHW (I'm someone who plays supports a lot in video games): Okay, I'm not gonna typecast myself and play the Hunting Horn.
Me now: COME BACK HERE SO I CAN BLOW MY TRUMPET IN YOUR EARS YOU OVERGROWN NEWT!
HH is a great support weapon.
But when someone enters your game that knows how to effectively use it offensively, you usually end up killing the monster in about 5 minutes.
I noticed I've been killing the monster in the 5-10 minute range. I use Aerial Style with my Hunting Horn, working on putting more stun gems on my equipment.
Edit: I've been playing MHGU and plan on making the leap to rise to wreck house.
Hunting horns. A great original wyvern once said that hunting horns are not used by many Hunters, and that the long sword is the most popular choice...

Tazzie Devil the sns is an amazing weapon if you can master it, sadly such a feat is beyond me for now
Sns with the aoe item set bonus is more support then hh
I have no idea how sns is a beginner weapon, it gets pretty technical since it’s a slash weapon that also does blunt knock out damage. I’d say long sword or even great sword are more beginner. Long sword having a some what straight forward move set and the great sword being a hit and run. The only way I can see sns being a beginner weapon is the ability to use items and your slinger with your weapon drawn. But anyways, just because a weapon is for “beginners,” doesn’t make it any less difficult to master.
ill be completely honest sns is the only i have absolutely no skill like i can't understand at all yet i can use literally every other weapon with full understanding of atleast what i should be doing

Imagine the feeling of being a monster. You're chilling in your cave enjoying the idea of not being a fashionable pair of boots, thinking about the last few hunters to come through. One had two smalls words and moved with the speed and ferocity of a demon. When he put a cloak on he would create explosions with every swing. Another guy was a berserk swordsman with a slab of iron that someone had attached a jet to. He was slow but swung with enough force to shatter stones into dust. Another guy was a druid with a dragon spirit. He'd leap about like he had wings, and moved between clouds of toxic dust to strike where you least expected him.
But none of them compared to the one hunter who still sends shviers down your spine. The Bastard Bagpipe of Angus McCloud!

Honestly, the only thing that keeps preventing me from picking up Hunting Horn is that I can't feed my tail-cutting addiction with it.

Actually you can, the backward + attack move that gives a stab with the handle is actually a cutting move.
Yeah but how often do people actually use that? The range is really tiny so it's hard to connect against a lot of tails.

Hunting horn, stun potential, team wide buffs, good damage and wicked range for it's attacks. All weapons have a place, but when a hunting horn pro enters the hunt you can definitely feel their presence.

By presence you mean the hunt takes longer than normal but oh i get to have earplugs which is useless when you roll thru roars by habit. I mean some buffs are useful and I like having a HH user in the party simply to have a different hunt than usual.

I gotta be honest, I had the wrong idea of the HH at the start, because I was almost used to be the Support guy in most class-based gamed (mainly because no one else does it around me), but after playing MH4U and Borderlands 2 (the former one being more decisive)... Something changed inside me, now, most class-based games will teach you that your DPS suck and should not be your priority, but rather giving advantages/disadvantages to friends/foes, I get that, but both MH and Borderlands (specially 2) throw that out the window, you are able to be supportive, yes, but they make that a side dish, important, tasty, healthy, but only one part of the whole meal, you are as capable as other classes, even better in some aspects, but a good "support" player can dictate the whole pace of the battle more than any other class, because they are the most powerful class on the game, capable of both DPS, and buffing... Thanks MH, I know things such as Clerics or Medics are important, but I wanna be upfront with my friends, helping them full force, winning or dying together... Rather than waiting for an outcome.

I may be a noob to this series but the biggest thing I’ve seen so far is whatever weapon works if you know is how to use it. It’s the hunter that matters. You can have the best weapon and armor but without the skill behind it, it doesn’t matter.
At least that’s from my observation of seeing other players.

That's the beauty of this game. We are all so different from each other. I have mastered the HH, but i can not use the GS for shit. But my friend mastered it and he tears shit up with it.
Ive seen people us the SnS, Lance, Bow, etc to their full potential and their own way that every person is optimal in their own way.
Thats the reason why i am really hating the "builds" centered around Monster hunter. Now you have Charge blade noobs running around using that damn weapon and carting because they CANT master it. Its not their weapon type that suits them. They need to discover THEIR own abilities

As a Hammer user I am aiming to the Monsters head allways, anything else makes often no sense.
Then my teammates with their Blade weapons just attack randomly instead of aiming to the Monsters tail, to cut it off.
It happens way to often that they interrupt my attacks and I'm thinking ("WHAT THE HECK ARE YOU GUYS DOING!!").
Btw I like the Hunting Horn even if I can't get used to it, if I would, I'd use it as second weapon for sure :D
If you go near the Tail when I have my Axe out, you chose death.

Dilapidated Banana I was using the charge blade at the very start of my MHW career but found out I'm not experienced enough with it. Then I switched to Insect Glaive and I'm happy as can be. I've also then branched out to the Long Sword and the Lance weapons. Maybe I'll give the Horn a go sometime. 📯
To call a Hunting Horn a “support weapon” is a disservice. Sure, it has certain features that CAN be used for support, but one should not disregard the fact that this thing hits like a runaway semi, and can also buff itself at will.
SamValiant If you compare the damage output of the Hunting Horn to most other weapon, it gets outclassed by pretty much everything other than the Lance, the Sword and Shield and the Bowguns. If you don’t like the word “support” just call it a “team” weapon.

HH mains enjoy the thrill of playing sweet sweet music upside a monsters head - the buffs are just a nice side effect of that.
In short, hunting horns aren't about DPS they are about insult to injury!
This is why I love Monster Hunter. Every weapon is a destructive work of art in the right hands. For instance, I can use most weapons, but I know I'm at my deadliest with a Heavy Bowgun. Doesn't matter what anyone else says when you can stare down a White Fatalis and live to tell about it.

I just cut shit up to pieces with my trusty Long Sword. Hitting a Roundslash just as the monster is attacking, and not only managing to get the hit but also completely dodging the attack in the process is incredibly satisfying.

The problem with referring to it as a support weapon is that you imply that it only works well in lue of something else. But, what people fail to see is that it is, in essence, a musical war hammer. It's a massive blunt object sturdy enough to be wielded like a club that also happens to play music. Support weapon my ass.

Step 1 take a ball of power and buff abilities
Step 2 add a stick to it
Step 3 throw in a flashy design for sh%# and giggles
The HH is a support weapon in the same vein as the SAW machine gun is a support weapon. You take it to dish out massive amounts of pain, and it doesn't even matter if you hit anything, it still has an effect.
I think the SAW is classed as a support weapon because once the enemy hears full-auto fire coming from an infantry squad, they are more likely to keep their heads down (while also focusing their attention on the SAW user) so the rifleman can flank and do some good ole one-shot one-kill, knowmsayin?

Hell yeah, give the HH a good shine in this video. New players really like to shun the HH but it’s honestly really fucking good. It’s one of the mains I picked up when I started out in 4 as well.
