pro tip : watch movies at flixzone. Been using them for watching a lot of movies lately.
I'm a fan of weapons that shatter their own existent cores when they attack. Seeing steam fly off after a Switch Axe amped spin, seeing the Gunlance overheat and require a heat vent in order not to break itself is fantastic. It's what makes me love MH, and what makes me love games like bloodborne. This is peak over the top fantasy design.
Omg this speaks to me so much. It's such a small thing but seeing the swax kinda open up to let the steam out and hearing the sound it makes after a condensed discharge is so fckn cool.
Agreed. There’s something so satisfying about those visual touches. It makes the weapon feel so powerful that it practically destroys _itself_ when used to its full effect
A history of sad tiers and explosions... sorry I meant tears.
I'm very happy how the weapon is more and more technical every entry while keeping the essence of it.
Explosions!
Thanks for all the help!
@@SuperRADLemon You are welcome!

@@caoslayer it deserves it it one of the silliest most fun weapons
well, this episode needs to be shown to Rurikhan phft...
My boi ruri would be proud
MH team frightened by gunlance's full potential, that's why they haven't actually buffed it since its inception without introducing a nerf simultaneously meanwhile the longsword is allowed to be literally god.
I have to say, having recently picked up the weapon, the gunlance has sooooo much potential. Like why does gunlance not have elemental shells? That seems like a no brainer since every other weapon with an ammo mechanic has elemental versions. It's just so disappointing. Gunlance is super fun to play but it sucks to see it struggle while long sword just gets to do everything.
@@TaqSoto that actually sounds like an amazing idea, giving the option to attach an elemental barrel to a gunlance like you can attach a shield or barrel to a HBG.
The only reason why they probably haven't done it is because of the regular lance, there wouldn't be much reason for lance to exist unless they were to overhaul it like they did with hunting horn
@@navi8801 I don't think giving the gunlance elemental shells would make lance any less appealing. Lance and gunlance have two completely different weapon designs. Lance is more about blocking and countering while gunlance is, or should be, about shelling. If I want to poke stuff I'll play regular lance. The explosive capabilities is what draws in the gunlance users. I think they should lean into it way more. Have more than one armor skill that increases shelling damage. Give elemental shells and status shells. Maybe even more types of shelling. Completely drop shelling levels, or at least have more weapons with max shelling. It's the worst when you get to end game and 80% of your tree is trash cuz the shelling is lvl is low. Even with this update the chameleos gunlance is the dumbest thing ever. Why would you even bother making an endgame gunlance with shelling lvl 3? Shelling is the main feature of the weapon. I just don't get the thought process.
@@TaqSoto Because slaplance exist and i hate it. If you just want the big chonky raw damage without shelling just grab a great sword you heathen!
@@hakimiamir6538 Slaplance is so stupid, but it'll never die cuz raw will always get better throughout the game while shelling always has a cap. Until they make it so shelling can scale with raw then slaplance will always rear it's ugly head.
Playing gunlance feels like youre doing the sickest combo routes and tricks imaginable feeling like a stunt driver in an action movie, but at the very end you just fall flat on your face all while learning that your casual friends on other weapons were twice as fast as you on the same hunt.
Yeah it sure is fun, but it's hard to do anything fast when you're using it.

Alternate Title: From Shotgun to Valstrax
You skipped the part about Gunlance being super easy to use underwater, which was actually pretty huge in the third gen, considering how clunky most weapons were in that environment.
Capcom may not love the Gunlance but we do!
I can't believe Susan still has your family, Rad. Sending thoughts and prayers 😔🙏
Ah Gunlance.
The Weapon Capcom refuses to make not shit
It blows me away.
They always keep making more mechanics for Gunlancers to keep track of like the heat gauge, Wyrmstake Blast, and now Ground splitters. It’s like they want it to be a complicated weapon but, unlike charge blade, the return for playing into these mechanics is average DPS that Bow can get by mashing A.
@@bloodbane93 They refuse to give gunlance the slightest boost to make it on par with everything else, all while LS just gets better and better every Gen and gets to do everything. It's astounding really. The weapon is extremely fun to play, but it would be nice to at the same time not be bottom tier.
Gunlance really suffers in rise from a lack of scaling options. Shells dont scale off anything but artillery, and I remember reading that dango bombardier is bugged and doesnt actually give gunlance the buff it's supposed to. Capcom either needs to increase the boost from artillery or let shells scale from raw, otherwise gunlance is gonna get brutalized by the inevitable power creep that will come with G rank
@@TaqSoto gunlance is not bottom tier in Rise wtf man, it’s getting great times have you even watched a single speedrun?
@Kuromitsu Kazdam that doesn't look like it's updated, or it's just hard to navigate idk, but the most recent times I'm seeing aren't those I'm seeing on youtube anymore, like for example Magnamalo with Lance is still listed as a 3:54 when the guy that set this record beat it himself by over 20 seconds, also I straight up do not believe that gunlance takes 9 minutes to kill almudron
edit : nevermind the newer times are on the bottom, that's weird
edit 2 : my point stands, it's getting good times, just look at teostra who's done in 4 minutes and 25 seconds, that's better than quite a few weapons, sure if you compare it to the long sword it takes more time, but please stop crying about weapon tiers and just try to improve with your weapon
1 thing I didn't know until fighting Teostra in World a few years ago was that while on fire, you don't need to sheathe your weapon to extinguish the flames. Instead of the normal dodge rolling 3x, you side step 5x.
Ah, yes, the unnecessarily nerfed and mistreated weapon
Honestly, I never thought about using this weapon. It never interested me. Then with Rise I decided to pick it up to try something new. Oh my god I love this thing. So much so that I have even gone back to older games and have been using it. It just really fits my very defensive playstyle. I can’t believe I ignored it for so long lol.
what weapons are you using before picking up gunlance btw?
I feel the same way on Insect Glaive and Switch Axe, damn they are super fun to play.
@@senzenseki I mainly used hammer. It was pretty basic to understand so I liked it. I still use it but I like gunlance way better now.
Huh, u hate everything about the rise gl
Just feeding that algorhythm to save Rad's family.
Being a gunlance main is really cool right now. What's happening to hunting horn and gunlance is amazing, buying a switch for Rise was the best thing I've done this year.
yes HH is better but at what cost
yes HH is better but at what cost
rise ruined both of these weapons
Awesome video!! I didn't even thought that you would mention the auto-guard bug form MHP3rd.
In the Auto-guard bug, the hunter would enter in a "possible to guard state" whenever it shoots, it didn't require to Quick Reload after (as said in the video), you could just shoot in the direction of the monster attack and it would block automatically.
Also one curious thing is that exclusively in World/Iceborne, they changed the Wide shelling to be the strongest at Wyvernfire.
ok so hear me out, cause MH has had a lot of Crossovers, what if they had a crossover with Doom with Doom Marine looking armour and a Super Shotgun Gunlance :)
also, congrats on getting a sponsor
get that bag, queen
It's my favorite weapon in Rise. Full tank build switching between poke shelling and chicken stance is my preferred way to play. Bazel set with the Almudron GL, I managed to get a Talisman with 2 levels of Evade Extender, the Master Mounter skill, and a 2nd and 1st level Deco slots. I farmed the shit of Almudron. Between his GL and the materials I needed for the Guard Decos among a few other pieces of gear, I never want to see him again (Even though he's one of my favorite Rise monsters). I also slotted in a Diversion Deco for multiplayer and I think it's what saved my group against Chameleos. We first tried that monster but yeeted both carts in the first 3 minutes of the fight. But since I have Guard Up and Guard plus Diversion, I kept it focused on me like 80% of that fight.
"It will eat through your sharpness gauge like it's a two-bite brownie."
Oh, like the Dual Blades.
This is like when I got McDonald’s after my doctors appointment and went to the school cafeteria!
I think I see a connection in starting the video about gunlance with a clip of Red Khezu...
now that you've done all the mainline games and frontier, monster hunter online might make a good video

Nice dmc reference lol
Watching this made me remember how powerful wyrmstake felt in world, with the screen shake and massive explosion sounds. Kinda wished that was brought over to rise.
I've been playing and loving the hell out of the gunlance in Rise. So much so that I've even thought of maining it. But I gotta be honest after watching this video and learning the history of this weapon, I don't know if I can take the abuse lol. Capcom just seems to love abusing gunlance mains by buffing and nerfing the weapon at the same time constantly keeping it from truly shining. All while long sword is out there foresight slashing through everything. That's some straight up bullshit.
Gunlance is so cool its sad Capcom doesn't feel the same way
@@philippeszanto9133 I just want those cool ability to not bring nerfs with them
@@philippeszanto9133 damage wise I think that wirebug rocket move still doesn’t top other wirebug moves that other weapons got. That’s why GL is the lowest in speedrun average time. They got gimmicky moves but not combat-practical unlike other weapons.

Well you aren't thinking straight, if they are nerfing it, means its overpowered... besides we can't do much Gunlance is wpn that only has 3% of the player base using. I just hope it doesn't get cut in MHW2 or something.
Can't wait for the history of SuperRAD's family videos.
An entire family video? There’s of course SuperRAD himself. And I’d assume NormalRAD, and also a MediocreRAD. Not to mention, AmazingRAD.
Gunlance may not be the best... but Holy crap, they made it the best its ever been in rise. So much fun.
thats a joke, right
@@Exel3nce Nah, I'm having a great time with it. Do i wish things worked out for the weapon better numerically? Sure. But i love the underlying mechanics and design philosophy of the weapon, and how it's meant to be fun.
I've been a gunlancer since 3U, and things like blast dash, aerial shelling, the general flow of the weapon have all felt the most fun to me with the weapon ever. The only things i'd like to see back are Anti-Air Flare and a good rework of rapid valor shelling from GU, as the most different style of gunlancing to exist.
Gunlance's problem isn't that it's not fun- Rise actually reinvigorated my love for it- it's that the damage numbers always treat it poorly.
@@SylemGistoe rise stripped the fun out of the funlance. its but a shell of what world for example did.
Rise is pretty good but my favorite has to be GU Gunlance, that AA Flare is just too beautiful
@@stoneneedham3596 I'm hoping sunbreak has hidden new skills they haven't shown yet, because I need AA flare back. Or Valor shelling. GU had some real fun good ideas for gunlance, just a shame it scaled so poorly against the hardest stuff.
Rise Gunlance sounds like it will be good if they do another G / Ultimate version. It looks like they just were too worried they would go too far and so every new thing took from something else.
Yeaaaa, they're worried gunlance might be OP all while longsword exists.
@@TaqSoto I still can't wrap my head around that mindset, they buffed the shit out of that weapon in every single way, but Lance/GL get the shaft. Especially GL with non-scaling shelling to top it all off lol. Atleast MHW:I fixed some of it's issues with new Wyvern stake blast and better shelling levels aswell as Wyvern Stake damage scaling with raw and for rise they didn't even consider any of that for some reason
Well Sunbreak definitely buffed the weapon, but by how much, I'm not fully sure. We may have to wait a little longer to fully see the weapons potential.
@@Exalted-Beleth The main issue seems to be that they totally redesign Gunlance every generation for some reason, whether it's the Heat Gauge etc.
As someone whose hunted with gunlances... the support they can give to damage is nuts...
But honestly it's a fun weapon people should try when they're comfortable with their current weapon because flying through the map is Hella fun
Quick note about the Auto-guard Gunlance bug in MHP3, it wasn't just the quick reload animation that gets auto guard, the recoil animation of all shelling outside of Wyvern's Fire also gives you auto-guard. So basically spamming quick reload and shelling, you can keeping attacking while blocking all attacks in a braindead spam style, making all monster fights extremely trivial.
Hell yes!!!! I've been binging your content for a month now and youre work is amazing.
Also Im just waiting til you get to all 14 weapon types and hopefully cover the long non mainline/removed weapons which are Magnet Spike, Tonfas, Medium Bowgun and Accel Axe :D
Man, Susan brought Rad's family into hell? This story is mad ballin'.
Really curious to see where this will go from here.
We need a history of the medium bowgun.
Random as hecc pointless comment but returning MH player here (started with 4U years ago when I was a young kid) just wanted to say keep up the good work as your contents been really fun to watch and you've quickly become my fav Monster Hunter youtuber. Mainly found you through your history of MH and Frontier which have become my favorite videos to put on and watch lol.
Are we gonna get a Supercut of the Story so far once the Susan Arc is finished?
Man, I always played around a little with GL and then completely fell in love with it in World, so everytime I hear about the nerf-buffs (buff-nerfs?) my heart weeps a little. Of all the weird things, I appreciated the idea of the heat gauge the most. Just the idea. Because, much like how Switch Axe tried really hard to link its two halves (and imo managed to do it in Rise), the heat gauge felt like a genuine effort to combine the use of poke and shell. Bringing with it a completely unnecessary nerf was unfortunate to say the least and the visual design of the gauge made it superhard to manage. Would it have hurt to make it a scale with actual units?
Overall I love the GL, but I have to try hard to not look too closely, because the way Capcom "buffs" the weapon is infuriating. My biggest pet peeve is how Hailcutter doesn't even fully reset Wyvernfire, but leaves the gauge with juuuuust a little sliver, making the move even worse than it already is with way too much windup and no armor whatsoever. Oh, and if you get hit during ANY of it, guess what? No cooldown reduction for moi.
I still love the weapon a lot though. Nothing beats having explosions available at all times.
Only thing they need to add is a ability to put the GL under your armor and blow up something behind you besides blast dash. That way we can have the monster blowing up behind us effect, 2nd only to the walking away from an explosion in slow motion.
Nothing like a good boom from an explosion stick =D
Gunlance in Portable 3rd is actually stupidly busted, same with Bow's Arc Shot
How busted? You can stunlock Silver Rathalos to death with it

We made it G*mers we got the NordVPN Sponsorship
why did you censered gamers my boy?
@@imsirnootnoot can't believe you just said it like that, shocking
that still does not answer my question
Bruh...
Charge Blade main, but the gunlance is hella fun!
Was that a divine comedy reference I heard? I love it
I find it weird you said gunlance focused on cutting damage instead of thrusting because the lance and most of the blademaster weapons have their damage classified as Severing in every game. Severing, Blunt and Shot are the 3 main damage classifications in the series and i'm pretty sure that's how it's been since the first game.
I can't believe that this is not sponsor by Long sword gang
Fun fact: The Wirebug Whisperer skill, combined with aerial-use Hail Cutter (Hail Cutter from Blast Dash) allows you to use Wyvernfire roughly every 15 seconds if you have 3 Wirebugs.
Conceptually the heat gage was a great idea because it tied the shelling and melee modes of the GL together. It encouraged you to mix them to get the most damage. I also liked over heating because it punished you for being sloppy. However, the whole thing was implemented as a nerf which kind of soured the whole thing.
I hope they bring back the heat gage with better tuned numbers.
What type of fucking weed are you smoking?? That shit was fucking ass
I know I'm extremely late to your comment but I fully agree. managing the gauge itself wasn't too tough, the problem was strictly due to numbers. I'd be happy to see heat gauge come back as a buff in Wilds, ideally with Dragon's Breath in some form
Yes he finally got to the shotgun on a stick!
Been waiting for this since he started this series!
Oh and congrats on the sponsor :D
That red stamina... bad memories of forgetting bbq spit.
he missed 1 thing in Rise that is very nice, while charging shells u can adjust your aim vertically which is new and very nice 4 since u don't have 2 shell after some of the weird attacks 2 make sure it's at the right angle u can just change it yourself like if a monster suddenly starts flying as u r charging or lands u can still hit it with that shell
Most Players: Charge Dash go zoom zoom zoom.
Me: So you're telling me I can use this from long range to go into an instant overhead slam and full burst?

13:30 this was actually visible in the older titles too.
Mained hunting horn and hammer when I started P3rd, moved to Lance as I was finishing the game. Took up gunlance in Generations because it was bizarre and fun. Moved to Gunlance in world cause my other options felt super bad.
Love seein' this full history tho - would love to see how the other weapons have evolved, along with the four lost weapons.
Me, a humble DB main: May I please have “History of Dual Blades”
Might be next actually
As one of the only living Gunlance mains, I approve of this video.
Didn't Funlance trend on Twitter in japan?
Gunlance has always had a special place in my heart all the way back in Freedom Unite, i know it wasn't that good of a weapon back than, but defeating a Nargacuga with a Rathian Gunlance has always been a great memory. its fun seeing all the changes its had over the years, i remember how i thought Full burst was the greatest thing they could ever add, but cut to years later i'm using my weapon to pretending i'm Valstrax about to drop down on some unexpected monster.
Thank you for covering Dauntless
No worries!
I'm like a week late (thanks UA-cam for notifying me), but thank you for doing this.
The big nut of weapons deserves more attention.
One good rule of thumb for this is that going from G & GU to World, they swapped some of the properties of shells of Long & Wide.
This can be noted because the Raging Brachy gunlance (aka THE Gunlance) had long shells in GU but got Wide shells in World. Specifically, Long shells used to benefit more from its Wyvern Fire while Wide benefits from charges. These 2 things swapped in World.
Now, with changes to the Wyrmstake in Rise, it now makes it to where hanging out on certain spots for the monster is more advantageous. Long Wyrmstakes do a bunch of baby, cutting attacks followed be a mediocre explosion, but because of the amount of cuts, it's great for camping out on the tail. Due to the Stun, Wide shell is better for face; normal is a big of a middle ground that can be for either, but I find that it's better for body shots.
Or, you could do when I do, & slap on full Tobi-Kadachi gear, grab that Narga gunlance with Master Riding Ramp-up, & just fly around the monster mounting more often than the Glaive would even dream of doing.
Fun fact, the gunlance COULD full reload in gen U using valor, you could use the same input but you have to be in the valor sheath, this, however, wasn't that useful since once you get 4/max, which is usually 4 or 5, maybe you could use load up, but it wasn't that necessary, nor advantageous unless you were using long, which got to enjoy the full 4 shell reload of the valor state. In this game the gunlance meta was valor fullbursting
Other than that, you were spot on with the explanations, though maybe a veteran could correct me since I haven't played anything bellow 3U.
I thought Dual Blades were done already but seeing as they actually dont have a vid, I’d love to see Dual Blades for the next history vid
Remember the Frontier history days when SuperRad said: "Unlike today where you can use something like NordVPN. No, I'm not sponsored by them so don't worry."
Here we are fellas.
A note for Gen/GU. Being in red gauge have you 20% more damage, but Capcom nerfed the damage of gunlance by 20% from 4u. This however was fixed in GU making the gauge a bonus. I personally don't mind the gauge but I understand those who do.
Eventually could you talk about the frontier specific weapons? I don’t know much about them but they look really interesting I’d love to see them in the main games
"have you heard about lance..."
Me being 1 of 60 lance mains:
Yea
His family sure has been trapped for long
Possibly the biggest buff gunlance ever got was starting quests with ammo already loaded.

we're my mediumbow gun viedo God damn it , and nice edit 7:48 did not know maining a gunlance made you a wizard
Since you've done the explosive version, think you could do the regular lance? It's my main and is one of the og weapons from the first games, and has alot more of a focus on counter attacking?
I often pick Gun Lance over Lance because my main weapon is the Charge Blade. Most of the armor skills carry over. I personally don't have any preference over either.
maybe i missed it, but i don't think you mentioned how long became the charged shelling type and wide became the poke-shelling type, basically swapping their playstyles
Ah yes. The American Cousin. A solid weapon with great versatility. Still the overcompensating version of the most faithful and trustworthy weapon Lance. Great video

So you’ve done the flashy brother, when of the classic sibling lol
the name gunlance implies more of an action oriented gameplay style, and while having a more methodical and technical weapon can be good, id like to be able to aim and shoot things with a weapon called the GUNlance.
still a pretty cool weapon just more cool in concept than execution
