Hey Crazy Will. I ran into a problem today. I was videoing a funeral using the microphone that came with my VIXIA HF R800 camera and for some reason the video did not pick up the audio in the video using the microphone. Is there anyway I can recover the audio from this video from the internal microphone of the camera? We are a funeral home, and as you can imagine, we are trying anything to be able to make this video with audio available for those who were unable to attend the service during these weird times. We would appreciate any advice you may have. We did record it to the SD card that came with the camera. If you need any further info to assist us in helping get this video available, we would definitely appreciate it.
So there no audio at all? If you use an external mic and it doesn’t record sound unfortunately you have no sound because it was recording nothing but video. I’m sorry I don’t have a solution for that. I have done it myself. I would recommend hooking headphones to the camera and testing the sound before starting recording to make sure this doesn’t happen again.
I know this is an older vid but maybe you still get the comments. We just bought a VIXIA HF R70, basicly the same thing. But I can't get a mic to work on it. Gone through the same settings you used but no sound coming in when the mic a small rhodes, is plugged in. It has the right size of end and it is a trs on both the mic and the camera ends. Do you need a trrs or something different to get the mic to work? Thanks GSW
Maybe your mic did you try another mic? some of my older mics didn’t work or needed special adapters. The biggest thing is making sure the settings are set to mic not av out.
@@CrazyWillTechShow I thought there was only the headphone or av out? I did that setting for the headphones. Is there another switch on the menues for mic/av?
Another great video. I like how you show clearly, how to go into different settings on the screen. Very helpful. I just bought a Canon Vixia R600 and I’m learning everything from scratch. I just got that L Flash bracket delivered today. I bought it on eBay for $7.95 plus tax I’m waiting for my neewer cm15 microphone which should be here Thursday. Can’t wait to try out that bracket with the camera and mic. Which brings me to a question. When using my external mic, can I still control the mic volume in the camcorder or am I just able to use the settings on the microphone? Thanks for the video.
Thanks! Yes you'll have to adjust both to get the sound you want. Your going to have do a lot of testing to get it right. That,s what I had to do like 20 videos of sound. lol you can't go wrong with the Vixia Siri's. Let me know how you like the neewer cm15 microphone.
@@CrazyWillTechShow I for sure will let you know how that CM 15 works out. While I am here, I have another question for you. Obviously I’m going to have to be doing a lot of testing with the new microphone and the camcorder. My brain is still active in VHS mode when it comes to recording. After I shoot some footage on the camcorder, can I just go back to the beginning of the SD card and record over stuff I have already recorded like on VHS? Or do I have to format the card every time I wanna start fresh? Pretty obvious the stuff is new to me. Well I’ve got grandkids and I would like to shoot some movies of them as they’re growing up. Thanks for your time.
I’m right there with you my friend my first edit was on two VHS VCRs lol it was horrible! After you upload the video you can delete it right from the card or reformat the whole card. Once you get used to it it’s a lot easier.
@@CrazyWillTechShow ohhh, very cool. I guess I’m going to have to go on my computer tonight and download the user manual for my 600 and do some reading. Obviously a lot more stuff going on with these camcorders. I will let you know if an old dog can learn some new tricks! Thanks for the tip.

Thanks Will. Hey I noticed that there is a background hiss with an external mic. I don't get this on my phone, a laptop or even my H4N. Have you seen this? Using a senhauser system. Thx.
Funny you would mention that. I had a mic given to me by fine fine work on the vixia and my iPhone fine but not my T6i it would always be hissing. I think certain mics in certain cameras just don’t get along.

I’ve just purchased this camcorder so I’m a newbie. So if I change the mic settings in High Priority, are the settings only applicable to that mode? In AUTO mode the camcorder picks what settings it thinks is best?
It’s all a matter of preference . I Believe it’s only in a mode. when you switch back to auto cancel that what you did and you can’t adjust it. Lol I forgot what I use I’ll post it back to you when I get back in the Studio... thanks for watching!
No problem I would’ve given you a quicker response if I wasn’t so lazy haven’t bin working in the shop lately. The settings that I use is highlight priority and manual Mic level 35.
Hey Will. Thank you so much for this, your videos are extremely helpful. Do you know if adjusting the mic level the way you show here will help if you have a shotgun mic plugged into the camera? I have the same shotgun mic that you recommended in one of your other videos ( the Takstar) and it's a great mic, however, I can't seem to find a way to adjust the volume. I filmed my first video today with the who set up and it came out perfect but the volume that was coming through my shotgun mic was too loud so there was feedback.
I have a microphone Rode VideoMicro, and it need to use the plugin power supplied via camera's microphone input. Do you thing it will work with this camera? Or I need to use a microphone with own power batery?
Great Video. I have been thinking about buy The Canon Vixia R700. Maybe I'm asking a little much But I have been really thinking about buying the Yi 4K Plus Action Camera which has an external Mic Input but it uses a Type C Connector. They say I can do Live Streaming an add an external mic. I have a 72" and a 25 Foot length Chord. Do you know about this? And what is the length of your Chord for your Mic when you record with your R800.
It’s not that long. But I have 20f cord I can connected to to try it out. I’ll try tonight. I’ll take a look at the camera. Yi is good but they can be hit or miss. Thanks for watching men.
I am thinking on getting the best Yi Action Camera out there. And with a lot of reviews it blows away the Go Pro in many ways. Just not sure about the long Mic after it goes through a Type C Connector. (BTW only a Yi Type C Connector is what I should use, others have had problems) Love to see the new video regarding the 20f cord.
Yi 4k plus is really good action camera but in my opinion it is overpriced. in that price range I would get Sony fdr x3000. Yi has a lot of features but quality of the video Zeiss lens optical stabilization better sensor better color science Sony is just way better camera with less fancy features. and it does have mic input. for a budget action camera I think the best deal for around 99$ is thieye t5 edge. the same sensor and procesor like GoPro 4
Thank you I will look into the Sony FDR x3000. Though I thought it was pretty cool to get an action camera that can do all of that. Just looked. It's $399 kind of stretching my budget but it seems like it could be more stable than the Action Camera's as far as adding a Mic to it. I will have to see how many pennies I have saved up before I take the Plunge. Thank you :)
it can be found for around 360 370$ but definitely pricey. honestly I am a canon guy, I got my first dslr 12 years ago, and canon is number one for me. yi4k + is good but not 299$ good more like 179$ good. sony is overpriced but what you get what you pay for. for around 99$ thieye t5 edge is definitely best buy and not that much worse than yi4k. it depends what you want. if you need a camera for every day casual shooting I would go with canon dslr like used t4i or new t6. t6 with kit lens can be found for less than 350$ and it's way better than any action camera. couple years back I bought used canon Eos m mirorless with efm 22mm f2.0 stm lens for around 220$ shipped like new 200 shots. and I can't be happier
can i still record and use it while it is plugged in and charging? does it need battery plugged in to use or can i just plug in to ac without battery and still record?

It has to have Phantom power.
My microphone costs more then this camera. But I don't care because the video on this camera is great.
Thanks for this video. Ic couldn't find levels
Right! Lol
im using a rode shotgun mic and its not working. does the mic have to have its own power supply?
Yes.
The mic I use it’s $25 ua-cam.com/video/udcDfyrEMp4/v-deo.html so Worth every penny.
@@CrazyWillTechShow yea I have two different mics and neither will work. both have tsr on both ends of the cable.
@@CrazyWillTechShow I thought there was only the headphone or av out? I did that setting for the headphones. Is there another switch on the menues for mic/av?
@@CrazyWillTechShow it looks like the same tsr ends on that mic also.
I’m still not getting audio.
What type of mic are you using? Needs to have phantom power.
Thanks man, this was really helpful!
Thanks man!
Well you have any questions let me know. We are all Learning. Can’t tell you how many times I show somebody piece of technology only for them to came back and show me some thing I didn’t know.
Genious
Thanks!
this video helped a lot. thanks. btw the way the internal mic on this camera is awful. even 1 mph wind and it sounds like gale force. it's got a external mic jack which solves that but if it didn't i would have returned camera to the store

Thanks queen awesome gaming!
Crazy Will Tech Show I really think this channel can make it I really like it!
Thank you so much! You have no idea how much I need to hear that today.
I fucking love you, friend! thanks so much.
Bro can’t stop laughing! 😂 that has to be the best response I’ve ever gotten.
Thanks dude
Happy to help thanks for watching.
Thank you! You saved me a lot of frustration. Job well done!
Thanks for watching.
I think certain mics in certain cameras just don’t get along.
can you mute the audio?
i’m pretty sure you can. just turn it down.
This really helped. Thank you! Any mic recommendations?
Thanks yes I do have a recommendation ua-cam.com/video/udcDfyrEMp4/v-deo.html I also have a playlist on the Camera ua-cam.com/play/PL6sM6dPg3LNOOs8V-0CTNfpAAFs9Hm0v_.html
Crazy Will Tech Show thanks for the quick response!!
No problem I would’ve given you a quicker response if I wasn’t so lazy haven’t bin working in the shop lately. The settings that I use is highlight priority and manual Mic level 35.
Crazy Will Tech Show thanks again. Much appreciated!
MY canon vixia hf r800 settings does not have your settings it has auto which has speeches as an option!!!!!!!!!!!
what mic are you using?
My budget UA-cam shotgun mic, TAKSTAR SGC-598 Interview Microphone ua-cam.com/video/udcDfyrEMp4/v-deo.html
2 years and I still love it!
Ever tried to hook up two lavalier mics?
I have not. I would try using a splitter.
Yup, been looking for that splitter that will work on this canon lol
Look for the Saramonic mixer on Amazon, mounts to a camera hotshoe, provides two mic inputs with auto or manual volume controls.
Yes that how you do it. I was using the mic in the video. Make sure you use head phones.
@@CrazyWillTechShow awesome thank you!
I have a microphone Rode VideoMicro, and it need to use the plugin power supplied via camera's microphone input. Do you thing it will work with this camera? Or I need to use a microphone with own power batery?
That’s a really good question I don’t know.. I don’t think supplies power. But I don’t have mic that works that way. Sorry man.
Crazy Will Tech Show thanks and congrats for the channel!
looks like no community.usa.canon.com/t5/Camcorder-Discussion/VIXIA-HF-R800-external-mic-not-working/td-p/229427
Thanks man!
fire outro!
Thank you :)
it can be found for around 360 370$ but definitely pricey. honestly I am a canon guy, I got my first dslr 12 years ago, and canon is number one for me. yi4k + is good but not 299$ good more like 179$ good. sony is overpriced but what you get what you pay for. for around 99$ thieye t5 edge is definitely best buy and not that much worse than yi4k. it depends what you want. if you need a camera for every day casual shooting I would go with canon dslr like used t4i or new t6. t6 with kit lens can be found for less than 350$ and it's way better than any action camera. couple years back I bought used canon Eos m mirorless with efm 22mm f2.0 stm lens for around 220$ shipped like new 200 shots. and I can't be happier
can i still record and use it while it is plugged in and charging? does it need battery plugged in to use or can i just plug in to ac without battery and still record?
does the takstar work with cannon vixia hf r800?
Yes I have a video on that very subject
ua-cam.com/video/udcDfyrEMp4/v-deo.html
Great tutorial video on the Canon (HF-R 800) video camera, I have the same one, but I couldn't figure out how to access it's features, you explained everything and made it simple to make adjustments, one question I have for you, being on a budget and wanting good quality audio, would you recommend (Takstar video mics) as an external microphone, verses (Rode video mic pro), the difference is price, about $275.00 between the two, let me know what you think!
Thanks man! As far as mics I want with the takstar all my video use that mic so you can here it plus made a video ua-cam.com/video/udcDfyrEMp4/v-deo.html . Like I said I’m not a camera guy I do what works. I watched lots of videos and did a lot of research I didn’t see the need but that entirely up to you. Thanks for watching!
after watching your video about the Canon Vixia HF R800 yesterday and 'chatting' with you, I've decided to get one of these. however, I need to use an external mic and some reviews seemed to say they were having issues (I have a Lavalier lapel mic) with external mics...will your adjustments correct this issue?
also, can you wear headphones as you are recording so you can hear yourself? (I have a background in radio)
thank you!
I have 2 different shotgun mics, one hand mic, and wireless cheap cheap Lavalier lapel mic. That all works great for me haven't had any issue. Yes you can listen with head phone with a mic while you record.
+Crazy Will Tech Show excellent; thank you!
Thank you bro
You’re welcome man thanks for watching !
THANK YOU!!!!
Now that was some useful information. Thank you. I'm loving the sound meter.
