If they are all in the same area of the room you are going to be looking at a shotgun mic. Like (www.rodemic.com/microphones/stereovideomicpro) or (www.rodemic.com/microphones/videomicpro). Keep in mind that the HF R400 needs a power source for a mic. It will not power most mics that are plugged directly into the camera. If you are looking to record a large group in different areas of the room you will need to think about a wireless set up.
Excellent video. Thank you for taking the time to fully demonstrate the VU meter (volume graphic on screen) and the effects that take place when you connect mics to it. Watching the full video gives solid information to anyone wondering about this.
"You do need a powered mic for this to work" is probably the BEST piece of info that I've seen on this topic. And this after searching support pages on Canon's own site, trying to figure out why the mic I use for Skype wasn't doing squat when plugged into my camera. OOOOOOOOOOOH! I have no idea what a powered microphone is (other than the wireless one I see in your video, but you've sent me in the right direction. Thankyou!
A powered mic is one that does not draw power from the mic port on the camera itself. Rather it has its own power supply. That power supply could be for a battery or electrical outlet. The R XXX camcorders from Canon all have this issue.
+Wanderer001 any recommendations on self powered mics other than that wireless one? A lapel mic for vloging is what I'm looking for. Camera mic picks up too much ambient sound and sounds "far away"
thank you very much. I had to get a video camera that had a mic output, so I decided to get the Canon Vixia HF R400 (the same one that you use in your video)! I already have a wireless axcess MPWL 1503-BK microphone. Which works great, again thanks for the information... Randy
I just tried my lavalier mic and it worked perfectly. I guess I have to get a mic like yours as well. Thanks again for the video, it really helped out a lot !!
Nice overview, but assumes the wireless mic receiver outputs mic-level, not line-level audio, and that the receiver also takes the mono mic signal and puts it onto both the left and right channels of the mic receiver output jack. The Vixia mic-in jack is actually set up to take a TRRS (tip-ring-ring-sleeve) plug, similar to an Iphone earphone/mic plug. Going up from the tip of the plug, the signals to the Vixia are left-audio/right-audio/ground/power. If you want to use the power connection, you need to use a TRRS plug wired correctly to use the sleeve power. Plugging a regular stereo plug (TRS) into the Vixia mic-in jack shorts power to ground in the camera, but that is OK since the power has a fairly large resistor in series and is current limited internally. If you plug a mono mic with a TS (tip-sleeve) mono plug, you will get audio recorded only on one of the stereo channels. A mono to stereo adapter will put the mono signal on both left and right channels and correct this. The power connection in the camera is shorted in this case. If a mono mic relies on power applied to the tip of the connection, as a condenser mic might, it won't work. You need to use a TRRS plug and wire it to provide needed power on the tip of the mono mike . Google for circuits. In my case, I had a wireless mic receiver that output a mono, line-level signal. To adapt to the TRRS input of the Vixia, I wired an adapter circuit with two resistors on a small piece of circuit board. The two resistors first reduce the mono line-level receiver to mic level. I then wire the reduced level to both the left and right connections on a TRRS plug. I then make the ground connection directly from the sleeve of the receiver connector plug to the 2nd ring connection of the TRRS plug going to the Vixia. I leave the sleeeve connection unconnected on the plug. Using a TRRS plug avoids shorting power to ground in the camcorder, and may save slightly on battery life. In this setup, the power connection from the camera is not needed. Sounds complicated, but works without thinking once the adapter is wired up. An excellent write-up on making various adapters for the mic input of a Vixia is at: www.instructables.com/id/How-to-connect-an-external-microphone-to-a-Canon-c/
quick question. have you ever had problems with your canon vixia picking up the external mic from the transmitter? it's been an intermittent problem. one day it works completely fine and another day, I see the bar menu for the external mic on my camera screen but I can't see the bars and no voice is picked up. do you think it's possible that my camera mic slot has malfunctioned? it's really annoying to say the least. any input based on your experience would be great. thanks. ps: yes the battery is fine and powered so nothing obvious like that.
I have not experienced anything like this with my camera before. Is it possible to use a different cord from the transmitter to the camera? That really is the only thing I can think of that might cause this other then a bad plug on the camera itself.
Wanderer001: I appreciates you doing this as It addresses my issue. To wit: I bought an XEXIA R52 because i saw the words "stereo audio recording". I make musical instruments which involve automated audio panning - so i wanted a camera in which i could record the audio from the instrument through wires as opposed to a mic and have the benefit of capturing stereo panning. My only othr option is dealing with it in i Movie or whatnot, but then I have to worry about syncing and this small job just got horrible big again. Now here's my problem I was hoping you could help me with: I can find the assignments for the audio input jack in the pdf manual. I noticed your Audio Technica wireless has the three contact 3.5 mm plug and the Canon manual does say they make a surround mic you can use instead of the internal one - so all looks good - but i can't find the tip/ring/sleeve assignment so i can make a cable that will send stereo info into the camcorder. Do you happen to have this info?
I bought some cheap lapel mics and I cant get them to work on my camera, how did you make your camera show the volume bar ? Is there a setting in the camera to change? Thanks
Can you link what lapel mic you got. I have had some people tell me that the mic jack is not working for them, because it is not providing enough power for their mic.
a major issue is the need to adjust the input level manually. how is that done? If the input level is too high, the sound on the video will be distorted. Please tell us?
I'm an amateur fire photographer in so cal and I'm extremely interested in purchasing this type of camera, I've seen many video reviews of this camera but I'd like to see a video of what I would use this camera for, which is emergency response videos. If you could please make a video testing how well this camera performs when videoing emergency vehicles I'd greatly appreciate it and it would super helpful. So if possible can you get a video of your local fire or police department responding? Thank you.
LBC fire buff It would help if you would go start a fire and run from the police. NOTE: DO NOT DO THAT! This comment is a satire of life on UA-cam and should not be taken seriously. Duh!
Hi, thank you so much for your video. I hope you can help me, at fit my externa mic was working wonderful!! However, on the last videos the sound is horrible when the pastor stops talking there is a loud noise, when there he talks again the noise gets lower.. any idea?!?! We are small church so the room is not sound treated. Also we use the movo mic with zoom H6. Thank you again for your time, and God bless you!
If you can use another mic to see if there is an issue with the report on the camera. If a different light works fine next week to check the cable on the light that's giving you an issue. Both are giving you an issue port on camera might have gone.
I have an iPod running into an electronic drum set. I use head phones and it is loud. Do you think the audio input on the camera could handle it going from the headphone output on my drums to the input on the camera?
I am thinking about buying an Audio-Technica ATR-1100 off Amazon. I know it was explained earlier that the r500 has problems powering mics without an external power source, but the wired Audio-Technica used in this video seems very similar to the one I'm think about purchasing and it also doesn't appear to have an external power source either(I may be wrong), but would an ATR-1100 work with this camcorder?
I have found it to not be very reliable. Most times even with the hand held mic I still have to plug it into the wireless power pack to get it to work.
Hi there, I Plugged wireless mic in... When I played back the video... It appears in my software that one channel of the two is showing.. So is it stereo??? Is there a setting for mono?
I do not believe there is a setting for this. It is determined by mic that you are using. What I have found is most wireless mic tend to be mono channel for audio because they are made for a vocal track. There are some shot gun mics that have stereo channel you might need to look into this depending on what you are trying to film. I hope that helps, let me know.
Hi, I have the R600. Is there anyway to adjust the levels of the mic in camera? When I record with my lav mic the sound is very loud and I have to dial it down in iMovie. Does the onscreen mic level indicator indicate if your sound peaks into an unacceptable range? Thanks!
The mic level can be controlled on the camera. However, there is a catch. I cover how to do it and what that catch is in this video: ua-cam.com/video/fttItkyj3zg/v-deo.htmlm. As for the mic level indicating your sound peaking into unacceptable ranges, this is not that fancy of a camera. The read out is marley showing what areas of the video are louder then others that is all.
I use this camera Sunday mornings. I plug the house sound directly into the camera so I don't have to pick up every body coughing. But I can't record in stereo despite a proper cords. Is this an expectation I shouldn't have?
I just purchased a vixia 600 and am looking in search for an affordable but still work decent for outdoor yoga recording. Any advice? Thank you kindly.
+Cesca Love I am not sure I under stand what you are looking for. You have the Vixia 600, are you looking for an additional camera to use outdoors or are you asking if the Vixia 600 can do this?
Quick question - When I plug in a battery powered lav, or a battery powered shotgun, the camera is picking up almost -12db of noise. Even when the manuel audio meter is turned way down. Is there an internal setting? I've tested both mics with the mic jack on my macbook and there's minimal noise. Anyone lese run into this problem? Thanks
I had a problem with background buzz/hum when using a battery powered external mic on my Vixia R40. I eventually discovered that it only occurred when I had the camera plugged into the AC outlet! Try running the camera from the battery only, and see if it helps. -- Mimi
stonysilenceworkshop yup, no hum when the camera's not plugged into the AC outlet. So did the Vixia R40 have that problem ongoing, or did it resolve itself after a full charge? I also have a Vixia hf42 and there was never a hum w/ the AC plugged in.
This is very helpful. I have the Vixia him 400. I just bought an Aputure A.lav wired microphone. It has a rechargeable battery. I'm getting a lot of LOUD buzzing, which I have been unable to resolve by trying different cables and settings. I'm wondering if it is not compatible? Or if I have somehow missed appropriate settings. It seems the camera should be adjusting auto, but I have tried adjusting manual settings as well without good effect.Any help appreciated! Many thanks!
+Susan Abbott Is the Vixia 400 running off battery or do you have it plugged in while filming? I have found that if I have it plugged in and use a mic I get a similar feed back.
I had a quick question. I recorded an interview with the external mic, and unfortunately, I think the battery must've been failing on the mic, because I get a lot of static from the mic. So much static that the interview is unusable. Here's my question: I know that on professional video cameras, there is a "camera mic" and "plug-in mic", and that if there is ever an issue with the plug-in mic, you can always resort to the camera mic, and even though the quality won't be as good because of the distance from the subject, at least the interview can be heard faintly. Can I do that -- are there two tracks of audio recorded once a mic is plugged in, and I can somehow switch off the recording of the audio that was recorded by my crappy mic?
I hate to say it but you are looking for a little too much from this consumer level camera. If you use an external mic that is the only audio that is recorded. It bypasses the on board mics once something is plugged in. Sorry.
You may have just solved my problem with the R600... I didn't realise it needed to be a powered mic!!!! Thanks. If this works for me I'll try to come back and thank you again as this could save me recording separately every time!
+Damian Brown www.ebay.co.uk/itm/MICROPHONE-PLUG-IN-POWER-BATTERY-MODULE-3-5mm-MONO-TO-3-5mm-STEREO-JACK-PLUG-/301497740311?hash=item4632aa6c17:m:mEJGGloDsHpiKLtHQMxHmrw seems to be what I need... anybody tried this?
+Wanderer001 Sorry responded to wrong post earlier. Hi, I bought the mic you recommended and it is not working with my Vixia HF R600. The weird thing is when i switch the power on I see the decibel meter do the meter thing you show but then when i speak there is no response on the meter and it does not record any voice. Any suggestions.?
Thanks a lot for the info! My issue is still not answered though -- maybe you can help...I'm using a Rode VideoMicro plugged right into the Camcorder. When I recorded, no audio was picked up at all, just a static sound. The mic works perfectly going straight into my computer. Do know what the issue could be?
Is the Floureon BM-800 condenser microphone compatible with the Canon Vixia HFR600? Do I need an extra cable? Is there a setting on my camera that I need to adjust?
Hi, I have the HF300 and when i plug in new, ATYR6550 2AA powered shotgun i get low but very noticable hiss. When i plug in new working ATR-3350 wired button powered lavlier I get LOUD BUZZ. Both mics register a 1/2 full mic volume upon plug in, and i cant find a way to alter anything. HHEELLPP!!!
I just purchased HF R70, will this mic work. Also any suggestion on what to do with transmitter box while vlogging at an amusement park? Or would I be better off with either a camera mounted or a wired lapel mic
Yes, it should. If you are going to be vlogging at amusement parks I would suggest going with a wired lapel mic. Just remember that the mic will have to have its own power as well.
So, I'm a music teacher that wants to record concerts of my students. I have a H4N Zoom that I plug into the camera. I have the H4N all set up with the mic level I want. However, the camera is auto-adjusting the sound so the soft parts of the concert sound like crap (because of the hiss) and then the sudden loud sections sound awful as well (because the camera can't adjust instantly to the sound). Is there any way to set the recording level on the camera to a static level and not change based on the amount of sound coming in? Any help would be appreciated! I just tried it again and I even switched it to "M" on the "Mic. Level" and put the recording level lower. It STILL auto adjusted. It is SO frustrating.
Ok, I was going to suggest lowering the Mic. Level on the camera as well before setting up the H4N Zoom. Have you tired using the preset audio setting on the camera for concerts? I have not had a chance to test this out in a situation like yours however, I would hope that it would taken into account the subtle dips in sound better then the default. Let me know if it helps.
Wanderer001 I unfortunately can't use the audio presets with anything plugged into mic jack. It instantly turns it to "standard" and is grayed out. I called Canon support about the issue and the guy I talked to basically said "what you're trying to do is beyond the scope of this camera because it's a consumer camera rather than a "pro"sumer camera. Truthfully, I think that is a bullshit answer. If I set the recording level at 10%, it auto adjusts for the situation and makes the sound louder. If I set the recording level at 100%, it auto adjusts for the situation and makes the sound softer. It's just unbelievable that I can't just set it to a level and have it not adjust. I even asked about a firmware update that might change it - no luck. I don't want to buy a $1600 camera so I can pick up sound at a decent quality. The video in this situation isn't really even that big of a deal. So annoying. Thanks for the response though!!!!
OPMS Music Wow that really does suck. Good data point to know. If the video is that that critical have you considered just getting a cheap audio recorder?
OPMS Music I have the same thing happening here. (My camera is the HF R500...virtually identical to the HF R400). I take a line out from the mixer and set the input level appropriately. The camera still self-adjusts. My theory on this is that the input "level" control is more of a pre-gain control. In this case, the "pre-gain" only controls the level of the signal before it hits the Auto Level Control circuit in the camera. The ALC circuit in the camera is never actually disabled. I look at this adjustment as being just a built in attenuator. It does help with reducing and eliminating distortion from a "hot" signal going to the input, BUT it does not disable the auto level in the camera. I think the labelling is a bit deceptive, since it is not a true level control.
Thanks for the info! It's just really frustrating because I know how to set the levels correctly when I do an audio recording. I just wish that I could do the same with video! (without having to import the whole concert and pair the good audio with the video) Oh well. We're just recording for the kids to watch in class, parents to watch online, and for posterity. We're not making any money! haha
hey Wanderer Thanks for your videos. I have a question. Im trying to download some videos I just took with my cam but when I put the memory in my computer They are not there. But they are still in the video camera. What wrong? Thanks a lot!
Chances are if they're showing up on the camera but not your computer they were filmed using hcav format and not the MP4 format. The reason you can't see them on the computer is you don't have a program that can open them.
I got a canon hf g25 camcorder ..when connecting the ext mic to my mixer amp and record from mixer head phone out to camera there is a humming noise in the background, when play back..when turning the headphone volume down the hum gets lower, turning it up the hum goes loader what is the problem, please, Willa..
Thanks for the vid. Do you know if the lav mic will pick up ambient noise as well? Let's say I'm interviewing someone and they are close to me. Will their voice get picked up along with the ambient sound?
+DeLuSioNaL's Arcade At least with the mic I use it does not pick up ambient noise. The other person would have to get almost uncomfortably close to be picked up by the mic.
Hmm, I'm looking to upgrade my mic for my channel. I'm planning on covering arcade conventions so ambient sounds would be great. I'll need to do some tests with my lav mic once it arrives. But I may need to purchase a portable boom mic just in case. Thanks for the feedback!
I tried using a RODE VideoMic Go with this camera and when I plug it in, I can't get an audio signal. Is this mic compatible with this camera or should I try testing if the mic is faulty? Thanks in advance for any reply to this question.
+Interface Death There should be no issue with the mic. The issue is the camera. One of the issues with the cheaper R400 line is that you need to have a powered mic. The RODE VideoMic Go does not have its own power source rather it uses what it can draw off the camera. The R400 does not output enough power through the mic port to power any mic. So the only mics that can be used have to have their own power supply.
Do you know if the issue with the mic port is the same with the Canon HF M300? Searched all over the Interwebs and can't seem to find an adequate answer. All I want to know is whether my Vixia M300 will work with the Røde VideoPro Go... -Thanks in advance for answering this, given I'm replying to a comment from 2 yrs ago ;)
Might be able to double back tape one on the top to the right of the GPS bump, depending on how big of an external mic you are looking at. Normally would would want a camera to have Hot shoe so that you can mount a shotgun mic to them.
I just found your site when looking for accessories for the vixia hf r400. The mic was one thing I needed, your video was helpful and suggestion on products to get. Now my other problem, I can't get a very steady flow to the zoom. Was looking on line for a remote. The camera is so small it is hard to be steady, the only thing so far I don't like about this camera.... Any ideas?
You never got to a very important point- how do you adjust the input level on the camera? Recording music in various settings demands that you may have to turn up, or turn down the input signal. If you fail to do that, loud music could potentially damage the camera, and it certainly would be distorted on playback. I'd be very thankful to hear about that. Thanks
Some mic only have mono recording. If yours does this there are two options you have. Either use a different mic or using post production software you can duplicate the left audio track into the right channel as well. I have done this a few times depending in the mic I use.
+Wanderer001 I have this mic: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00WJXHUXQ?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00 am i doing something wrong. or what would you recommend?
+PredatorOwnz04 It does not seem like it is a mono style mic. You can always try using a different 3.5mm jack to see if there is an issue with the cable.
I have a battery powered mike, and it is working, when plugged in- how do I raise or lower the recording levels? Various situations demand different sound input levels- how is this done?
I tried hooking up a regular computer microphone (unpowered) to my RF Canon video camera, like the one shown here, and it didn't work at all. Have you actually tried a non-powered microphone? You didn't show it working.
+supermuble I have and non powered mics do not work. The mic I used was part of a wireless mic setup. So there is a powered receiver that it was paired with.
I have the same camera and the same audio-technics microphone. when I plug it in, it just gets rid of all the background noise but the mic does not pick up any sound. I somehow fixed it once but I have no idea how can you help?
Can you send me a link to a web site that has the plug in power device you recommended? The Nikon ME-1 has no battery or on/off switch. I may have to return it if it's not compatible. My requirements are stereo sound, wind screen, some isolation from camera body (less autofocus noise) small size, for mostly outdoor shooting.
I have heard good things about the Rode Stereo VideoMic Pro. It is a little more then what you spent on the ME-1 but does fill the requirements that you are looking for. The wind screen "shaggy dog" looking one is an add on. It comes with general pop/wind filter. It should fit what you want, I am not sure what kind of price point you are looking at.
Thanks for your helpful videos. I have a very similar model (Vixia fh R700). I'd like to be able to turn off the LCD display while recording videos (lectures) with camera on a tripod. My understanding is that this is possible only by changing a setting in the menus and then closing the LCD screen. But that means you can't use the external mic! Is there any way to turn off the LCD screen on a Vixia without closing it, so that the external mic can be used?
+Aspey Humor When filming there is the word photo in brackets. Touch this and it will take a picture. The images are good enough to share over the web or make a nice 4x10.
HELP. I have a Vixia HF M50. I can run the external RODE mic with no problem. But my new Boya BY M1, which works fine on my cell phone, does not work. And yes I turned ON the "camera" power switch. I notice the 1/4" plug on RODE has 2 black stripes while the Boya has 3 which means there is something different about the jack. But it is supposed to work. Can you suggest a fix...perhaps name an adapter?
@@Wanderer001_Reviews Thanks for the reply. This my does have its own battery power supply to switch on for cameras. It's not helping. I now think it needs An adapter
Waqar Sahi From what I can see it does not appear that this model has a mic in port on it. This would make using an external microphone impossible. However, I do not own this camera so I am only going on what I was able to find on line.
I'm trying to get sound out of my shotgun mic and though I'm seeing the level measuring bar, I'm getting no sound reads or sound reception. Am I missing something?
Wanderer001 Oh, that would explain it then, because I don't have an external mic power source. Thanks for the prompt response, I'm going to subscribe because of it.
In real need of help here. I have a Samson Q1U USB microphone and ive been looking everywhere for ages to see if i can plug that mic into a camera. Can i use it on this camera and if not, any chance you could help me out and as im out of ideas here :/ I dont want to have to go out to get a new microphone so if i need to buy a special jack for it i wouldnt mind doing that as long as i get to use it. Meany thanks !
The Samson mic will not work with the R400. You could look into something like this (www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00H28XZWI/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B00H28XZWI&linkCode=as2&tag=wanderer001-20&linkId=2GR6C4CD5PUOY6SR) which may be able to work as the converter you need. However, I do not have this item so I can not say for sure.
Are you using the camcorder plugged in? Some times there can be a noticeable reverb in this case. Do you have any video samples on youtube? It could help, thanks.
I have been testing and just finishing a review of the Audio Technica ATR288W. It works with the HF R400 and has decent audio quality and its only $119.95 on amazon.
Wanderer, I am using an external mic and I can replay the video from the camcorder itself and hear the audio but the audio is not transferring when I take out the SD card and insert it into a computer. Any thoughts?
What format are you filming in .mp4 or AVCHD? There are times when AVCHD can not be played correctly by some media players on computers. With that said what are you using to play the video on your computer?
I testing two shotgun mics. A Bower and a Sima Mic Mixer. Sometimes I use them at the same time, the Sima has an aux jack which I plug the Bower into with the Sima Mic Mixer in the mic jack on the camera. I set the balance on the Sima so that both mics or picking up 50% each. I test it three ways, the Bower by itself, the Sima by itself, and then together. I haven't decided which sounds best. All three ways are a vast improvement on the camera's mic. . Maybe you can help me if you watch it yourself. It's in my Fumbling Wizard Series. I use a Vixia HF R50, which is basically the same cam you show.`
+Irene Yamane Yes in playback mode select the house icon in the upper left. After which select other settings, then the last tab. Here. There is an option to make the volume louder.
hey man i have a vixia hf 4500 and i want to use an external mic for better audio quality. my videos will consist of far shots and i want clear audio so which mic do you suggest i get? i dont want anything pricey although i know it might be pricey since it needs to be wireless and im gonna need a transmitter and receiver, but yeah please help
DWOProductions Sorry it has taken me some time to get back to you I was trying to find a mic that would work for you situation. I had some issues finding something that was good but also not extremely expensive. The best I could do was find a topic on a digital video forum asking something similer, here is the link; www.dvinfo.net/forum/all-things-audio/89832-best-long-range-wireless-mic-under-600-a.html I will let you make up your own mind as to how much is to much to spend as well as the max range you would like. I hope that helps.
Im having trouble with an SH-666 Condenser Microphone. Im plugging it in but the audio goes completely off. There isn't an on an off button on the microphone so Im really confused. It also didn't come with any instructions. (This is for the Canon HF R700)
If the mic itself does not have a power source other then then Canon Vixia it will not work. The Vixia line as a flaw in which the mic needs its own power. It can not just draw power from the mic plug.
Something like this: www.rode.com/microphones/videomicpro or www.rode.com/microphones/stereovideomicpro. Note how they are powered by a 9 volt battery.
Willi Patterson If you are asking how can you do this with your current set up you would need a second mic, that you can switch between channel A and B. The other way you could do this is by use of a audio mixer or splitter. Hope that helps.
I've been using Rode VideoMic with my Canon Vixia M500 camcorder. It picks up every little sound loud but doesn't get much louder in the video as if it reached the maximum volume. Could reducing the mic level fix this problem?
I do not think that lowering the mic level will help you get louder volume in your videos. If anything lowering the mic level might actually cause the sound picked up to be lowered as well.
Wanderer001 I've tried it today. It is better but not ideal, though. It picks up soft dynamics better, but still doesn't get loud enough. It'll do for now until I save my money for a better one. I'm thinking of Charter Oak e700. Have you tried that mic? Thank you for your quick reply, by the way.
+LEX MARTIN O R400 e R600 deve ser muito similar. O porta microfone capta o som mono mas quando reproduzidas ele duplica a faixa de áudio. Dando um som estéreo.
Hi dude. I just bought a Canon Vixia HF R10. I'm trying to use a Genius Mic withouth external power suply and it does not work. Could you help me? Thanks.
@@Wanderer001_Reviews Thanks for your reply. Yes, I realized that after many attempts. I thought my cammera was in bad condition. Do you think a Lavalier BOYA BY-M1 mic could work? Thanks again.
Hi. I have the same camera and the same mic, but i have a problem. I record everithing normal and i play the videos from the camera and the sound sounds good. But when i get the videos from the camera to my pc, the video doesn´t sounds. Do you kwon what happend. In the camera sounds good, but in the pc there´s no sound. Thanks
***** I would first suggest trying to play the video on a different program see if that helps, if not then a different computer. If it sounds good on the camera it should sound ok on a computer. Let me know if that helps. I will see if I can come up with something if it does not.
***** Ok last thing I can suggest that will be simple is try using VLC media player. It will load just about ever codec under the sun and if that does not do it then I will start testing things out on my camera to see what might be going on.
Is the audio quality via the external mic good enough to record a live event? I'm getting a LINE OUT from the main mixer device, will this camera be able to record stereo audio from it?
+Hrushikesh Ghatpande The audio quality really depends on the external mic that is used. I have never had the opportunity to use a line out from a mixer. However, and log as you have the right cable I think it will work and give you stereo as long as that is what the mixer is outputting.
+Hrushikesh Ghatpande From the videos I see you on your page it looks like you might be working as part of a stage crew. Any chance they will let you set out the mixer camera during one the the practice runs or a full dress rehearsal to make sure it works?
External mic is always going to give you better sound. However, with that said using speech scene mode will help to cut down ambient background noise and the like. So if it all you have it is better then nothing.
+Wanderer001 thank you for your reply. so, it sounds like that canon implemented the audio scene, more specifically the speech mode, by post processing audio signal obtained by the general purpose built-in mic instead of using a small shotgun mic-like, if any.
Thank you for the video! I was going to ask if the microphone must be one that has its own power supply, but I see you have already answered that down below. Reading reviews on Amazon, twice I've read that the Vixia R400 can only work with a microphone that has its own power supply, which means a little battery. That is no big deal, as long as I know which microphone to buy before hand.
I have a question... Do you know if the camera provides plug-in power? I'm planning to buy this as well as a RODE VideoMic Go, but it needs to have 2.5 v from the camera's mic input.
I have a VideoMic GO with the vixia hf r400 and I can't figure out how to get it to work. It shuts off the audio when I plug the mic in, but it won't come back on unless I unplug the mic.. Is there something I'm doing wrong?
It's like in this video where you plugged in the mic and it shut off the audio until you turned the other one on. Only this is, the Rode mic GO runs off plug in power and has no on/off button.
BlueNuggetProduction Everything I see says that this should be a non issue. The mic should work. Last idea I can offer is try plugging in the camcorder and seeing if the mic works then. Maybe it is a power supply issue from the battery.
Hey, quick question. I have a simple lapel mike that I plugged directly into the R400 external microphone slot, however, it doesn't pick up the sound at all. Any thoughts?
@@elijahmunkee5703 That would be the issue then. This camera needs a mic with its own power in order to use it. The camera does not give power to the mic.
@@yolandajimenez8134 I am sorry but I do not know enough about a blue yeti set up to know what might work to give power to the mic to use with this camera.
Hoping to get a little help here. I’m using this very same R400 camera to shoot UA-cam videos. I use two types of external mics, a handheld and a lapel mic. Both are wireless. Both have an adapter to plug into the camera mic line in port. While they work and record audio and the audio is fairly decent, when I playback the recording on my computer or edit my projects the final audio output seems to not work very well when wearing headphones. Sounds fine on a tv or computer or mobile device speaker. But if you plug in headphones the Audio recorded on the camera originally is only heard through one headphone. Usually the left one. It’s infuriating and I have tried everything I can think of to fix it. I cannot figure it out. Could someone please help before I throw the camera out the window? :) Thanks!!
It sounds more like your video editing program is treating it as a single Channel instead of dual channel for the audio. You should be able to visually see this depending on the program you're using. You can correct this if necessary by making sure the camera is recording in stereo. If it's still an issue you could always duplicate the audio Channel so that you have it on left and right in your editing program.
I just tried watching the raw footage from the camera and it is also mono tone, one headphone, left side only. So it’s not the editing software. I have tried adding a second audio track in editing and that also doesn’t seem to work. It’s horribly frustrating. What are the steps to ensure the camera itself is recording in stereo? That’s the only thing I could be missing here and I’ve been all over the settings. Unless there’s a hidden one I missed or misunderstood. I continue to be at a loss here.
If filming in auto mode select the camera and gear icon in the lower right hand corner of the screen select audio and then you're going to want to make sure it's on STD and those are the settings that I have when I've used this camera in the past.
***** Looks like you are running into the issue that the R400 has where if it is not a powered mic it will not work. I might recommend something more like this: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00HUEBGMU. Same style but is battery powered.
+Wanderer001 Hi, I bought the mic you recommended and it is not working with my Vixia HF R600. The weird thing is when i switch the power on I see the decibel meter do the meter thing you show but then when i speak there is no response on the meter and it does not record any voice. Any suggestions.?
this camera does not support all microphones, it must be a self powered mic, i found out the hard way.
thank you
So would a typical generic lavalier mic with the cord going to a 3.5 mm jack not work then with this camera?
No it would have to be a powered mic.
Mine didn't.
:(
Ya, I just got burned on this too. That mic jack was one of the main reasons I bought a vixia. Useless with my rode video micro :(
Which Microphone would be best to record a group of people in a room @ one time?
I might suggest something like this. (amzn.to/29UWFPg) but I am not sure of your price point.
Thanks. I've had this equipment laying around for so long and never used it. Needed this to get it going.
Is there a link to the external mic product that you are using in the vid?
Yes, right here ua-cam.com/video/fszzAF8wif0/v-deo.html
ok thank s
thank you very much.
Nucy Boo its is good ?
An excellent write-up on making various adapters for the mic input of a Vixia is at:
www.instructables.com/id/How-to-connect-an-external-microphone-to-a-Canon-c/
quick question. have you ever had problems with your canon vixia picking up the external mic from the transmitter? it's been an intermittent problem. one day it works completely fine and another day, I see the bar menu for the external mic on my camera screen but I can't see the bars and no voice is picked up.
do you think it's possible that my camera mic slot has malfunctioned? it's really annoying to say the least. any input based on your experience would be great. thanks.
ps: yes the battery is fine and powered so nothing obvious like that.
I have not experienced anything like this with my camera before. Is it possible to use a different cord from the transmitter to the camera? That really is the only thing I can think of that might cause this other then a bad plug on the camera itself.
great suggestion. I will play detective and see
+Ditsy Dolly @Ditsy Dolly Full 1080 60fps. I use this camera to film all of my newer videos if you are looking for samples.
+Wanderer001 I have tried this with headphones with the mic and I still don't get any mic levels. I have a R600.
+Nucy Boo Are you using a powered mic? One that has its own power source?
it's a
different mic. but have replaced that one and tried another. that's why I'm thinking it's a option in the camera
I have this
Wanderer001: I appreciates you doing this as It addresses my issue. To wit:
I bought an XEXIA R52 because i saw the words "stereo audio recording".
Thanks for the video but how do I connect it to my Tascam DR-40? When I plug both ends I hear a horrible noice, please help
From what I can see you would need an xlr to 3.5mm jack converter in order to use it with the R400.
thanks for your reply :)
I bought some cheap lapel mics and I cant get them to work on my camera, how did you make your camera show the volume bar ? Is there a setting in the camera to change? Thanks
it almost feels like theres a problem in the camera 3.5mm port, I noticed yours seemed very tight when you unplugged your mic, mine is loose.
Can you link what lapel mic you got. I have had some people tell me that the mic jack is not working for them, because it is not providing enough power for their mic.
Food Porn Network Try plugging in a different 3.5mm jack into the port to see if it is the port that is too big or loose or if it is the mic itself.
+Nucy Boo It does not. It has a night mode which lets more light in but not a night vision mode like you are thinking of.
Plug n play... If you have a powered mic or Phantom power going to it.
a major issue is the need to adjust the input level manually. how is that done? If the input level is too high, the sound on the video will be distorted. Please tell us?
I had someone else ask this too, so I made a video: ua-cam.com/video/991lj3lav8E/v-deo.html
Thank you.
I will see what I can do.
Wanderer001 awesome thank you so much!!!
LBC fire buff It would help if you would go start a fire and run from the police. NOTE: DO NOT DO THAT! This comment is a satire of life on UA-cam and should not be taken seriously. Duh!
so, will a lapel microphone work directly off of the camera? l would think it could at least power a little dynamic lapel microphone.
+electronics for fun It does not. Even a lapel mic will have to have it's own power.
How and what mi can you attach to the camera for mobility because there is no mini shoe, right?
There are no mini shoe on this camcorder. What I have done is use double sided tape where they should be to keep a mic in place.
OK, thank you.
Wanderer001
thank you for replying back.
It turned out it was the settings.
Do you have the night vision mode on your cam ? The new one does not.
I have an iPod running into an electronic drum set. I use head phones and it is loud. Do you think the audio input on the camera could handle it going from the headphone output on my drums to the input on the camera?
+David Willard It should be able to. You can always change the mic level to lower it a bit if it is too much for the camera.
Wanderer001 Any handheld mic/power bank recommendations? I'm fairly new to using this camcorder.
Nononsense69
Sorry to say I can only speak for what I use which came with my wireless mic set up, which is ua-cam.com/video/fszzAF8wif0/v-deo.html
Thanks! This was helpful!!
The particular Blue Yeti I have does not have XLR input. It's USB. What do I do?
+MrStrongBro You could try and converter cable, that might work.
I use this camera Sunday mornings. I plug the house sound directly into the camera so I don't have to pick up every body coughing. But I can't record in stereo despite a proper cords. Is this an expectation I shouldn't have?
The mic port seems to record in mono which then get duplicated when using editing software to make time like stereo sound.
-- Mimi
stonysilenceworkshop
yup, no hum when the camera's not plugged into the AC outlet. So did the Vixia R40 have that problem ongoing, or did it resolve itself after a full charge? I also have a Vixia hf42 and there was never a hum w/ the AC plugged in.
could you please tell me where the "manual audio meter " is? how are the recording levels adjusted? thanks Norm
ua-cam.com/video/991lj3lav8E/v-deo.html
Sorry.
That's what I figured, but figured I would just ask anyway. :) Thanks so much for your prompt reply!
The 3.5 mm jack needs to be stereo? Because I've tried with a couple of mics, and i got to see the mic bar. but I can't record a thing
You should be able to use either a stereo or mono mic.
Will it sit on a tripod? Will it record on special effects like monochrome and cross process?
My Puritanical Opinion The mic set up that I use can sit on the tripod. It also can be used in all the modes.
Wanderer001 Well, thanks for your quick answer.
You may have just solved my problem with the R600... I didn't realise it needed to be a powered mic!!!! Thanks. If this works for me I'll try to come back and thank you again as this could save me recording separately every time!

Figured it out from a forum! The camera doesn't provide phantom power, which the Rode VideoMicro requires
Yes you beat me to it it does need to be a powered mic.
Is the Floureon BM-800 condenser microphone compatible with the Canon Vixia HFR600? Do I need an extra cable? Is there a setting on my camera that I need to adjust?
+Entertainment Reviewer It is not. The only mics that work with the Vixia line are those that have there own power supply.
HHEELLPP!!!
Is the camcorder plugged into power or is it running off the battery?
We're not making any money! haha
Hi, i have one mic Sony ECM CS3, intent introducing in the Vixia r400 but not work. My camera is damaged?
Mic should work, 3.5mm connection. Make sure you are using mic port, if not could be defective.
hey Wanderer Thanks for your videos.
@@Wanderer001_Reviews thank U for your time!
+Willa Cilliers When you plug it into the mixer do you also have the power plugged into the camera? If so this is the cause of the humming sound.
Wanderer001 That's what I though. Thanks for the reply.
It does not look like it would.
how to figure out if i can mount external mic on >PowerShot SX280
Digital Camera???

+PredatorOwnz04 It does not seem like it is a mono style mic. You can always try using a different 3.5mm jack to see if there is an issue with the cable.

+John Wathey Sorry to say no. The only option you have would be to lower the screen backlight.

I never had to. I only get a hiss when I use a mic when the camera is plugged into a power source.
The vixa line needs to have a powered external mic. I did not see that this mic is. What this means is the mic must have its own power supply.

If the mic itself does not have a power source other then then Canon Vixia it will not work. The Vixia line as a flaw in which the mic needs its own power. It can not just draw power from the mic plug.

Ji An Sorry to say I have not tired that mic. It's a little out of my price range right now. So I can not offer any helpful information on it.

How bad/good is the built-in audio scene mode as "speech" vs. external mic?

When I use a mic with phantom power it is so noisy as to be unusable. I can't seem to lower the power of the mic to fix it.
You may need to adjust the micro-level itself on the camcorder.
I have a question... Do you know if the camera provides plug-in power? I'm planning to buy this as well as a RODE VideoMic Go, but it needs to have 2.5 v from the camera's mic input.
I want to say yes. The wireless mic set up that I have, also has a hand held in line mic, which I have tested plugged right into the camera.
I have a VideoMic GO with the vixia hf r400 and I can't figure out how to get it to work. It shuts off the audio when I plug the mic in, but it won't come back on unless I unplug the mic.. Is there something I'm doing wrong?
BlueNuggetProduction Is it turning off the audio on just the camcorder or is the audio not working from the VideoMic GO?
I have found that the R400 does not have enough power to support a mic. You will need to use one that has its own power supply.
For some reason whenever I plug my mic in, (it's not a wireless one) it stops picking up any sound from anything
Does the mic have its own power?
@@Wanderer001_Reviews I don't think so, I think It's meant for computers
@@elijahmunkee5703 That would be the issue then. This camera needs a mic with its own power in order to use it. The camera does not give power to the mic.

Thanks!!
Every single time I plug in the mic, it can not longer catch any audio :(
