HEY! This is Doolbag Johnson AKA CREEP SCENE! Thanks so much for the recognition Crazy Will! You very much deserve a pat on the back my friend. You not only give great advice and helped me a lot with questions I had, but you actually pay attention and interact back with your followers. I will say again, believe it or not, some of the advice you have given about the camera really helped me to unlock a lot more potential I did not realize it had! Please keep the good content coming dude!
Lol you did it again made my day 😁. You give me too much Credit. Yes I try to get back with everyone and some I keep tabs on to see how there doing, like u. I in-joy helping people achieve their goals. And it comes back like what you wrote. It means a lot to me. Keep creating man.
Will - great job on all your Vixia videos. You actually address the logical questions that users would confront. These are great little cameras but the interface and operations can be puzzling at times. Regarding the viewer who wanted to use it for streaming…I feed two Vixias into an Atem mini, which is like a little switcher but performs the same basic function as a capture card. I had a hell of a time finding how to get a clean HDMI feed until I came across your video, so anyone interested in streaming should check that out. Also, even though you are not recording on the camera itself YOU STILL NEED TO HAVE A MEMORY CARD IN THE SLOT. if you don’t, the camera will stop sending video after about two minutes and display a generic Canon promotional graphic.
6:20 Exposure is to compensate for background difference in light compared to the subject. The background may trick the auto exposure to record the subject to light (overexpose) or to dark (underexpose). You select 0 for underexposed subjects. Exposure compensation can use aperture and/or shutter speed.
I also have the Vixia HF R800. I use it to film my Zumba choreography dance videos for my UA-cam channel. I keep setting it for Manual Focus but it automatically changes to Auto Focus every time I shut it off and turn it back on. I also shut off Focus assistance in the advanced settings. No matter what I do my videos get blurry with the movement. Can you suggest all the best settings for this camera for dance videos? I also see that the Zoom type options are 32x 57x or 11140x. I don't know if those settings need to be changed as well. Currently it is set at 32x. Thanks for your help.
As far as the question at 6:26 is concerned, there is also a possibility to capture a single frame from an already recorded video as a still picture with the camera. All one has to do, is to play the video clip in the playback mode, then pause it in a desired moment - a camera icon will appear in the lower left corner of the screen. When the icon is pressed, it saves the current (paused) frame as a still image file.
Hi running into an issue and you are the expert. Hope you know the answer to this one. I am using the VIXIA HF R82 to video masses in a church. Up close I was OK with the camera and the shotgun mic you recommended. Now that live masses are back, they stuck me in a choir loft about 40 feet from the "stage". So I can zoom in but the resolution gets very grainy. So i figured a telephoto lens will help. First I tried the Vivitar 2.2x telephoto, 43mm, that everyone seems to sell online. With that one I got serious vignetting. I could zoom past it but when I zoomed all the way to the subject, the center was clear, but the edges were out of focus. If it is a 2" diameter, 1" circle in the center is clear but the rest of the image is fuzzy. So I figured get past the vignette with a bigger lens barrel. I bougth a 43mm to 58mm adapter ring and bought 2 Polaroid lenses; one 2.2x and one 4.5x to see if that fixed it. Nope, same issue. Vignetting on both and the focus in the center is good but it gets blurry the further out you go. I am ready to buy a 43mm to 67mm adapter ring and buy a few 67mm telephotos thinking that might work but I am getting tired of returning this crap to Amazon so I figured I would ask someone smarter than me. Unfortunately Canon is worthless. As they don't sell lenses for the VIXIAs they won't even give me an opinion. I know I am putting a lens in front of another lens and i may just be screwed. I know if I stepped up to a better camcorder with replaceable primary lens I could just put a telephoto or even a zoom on it and it would be great, but I don't have the money and the church aint payin for it. I am open to suggestion. Even the 58mm lenses added too much weight and was pulling the camera down on my tripod. I am guessing a 67mm would be even heavier. I may need to put a metal plate between the camera and tripod and hang a weight off the back to compensate. Again I am open to suggestion. Oh and BTW I had lighting issues with this thing and started with an R800 and lost a mass once. Stepping up to the R82 you can set it, one step down from the top resolution, and it will record on both the internal memory and the SD card simultaneously so if one fails I have a backup. I tried your P setting, tried Cinema Vivid and others, but don't get the brightness I need. Finally used SCN and Snowman, upped the exposure to +.75 and it gives me the right lighting. Low light works but it creates trails. Unfortunately the room is too big and the priests are not that tolerant so adding a light kit to this project is not an option.
EV stands for Exposure Value and is equal to a full stop of exposure. Normally the full description of an exposure consists of both a shutter speed and an f/stop (or aperture opening). EV simplifies the process somewhat by reducing the two quantities to one number. Going up or going down 1 EV either increases or decreases the exposure by a factor of 2, that is, it either doubles the exposure or halves it, depending on which direction you're going, just like traditional f/stops do.
Excellent Information: Thank you so much for your efforts: My Question: If I want to shoot video for long time more than one hour what are the necessary settings should i do?
Hey Will, I enjoy your videos. I need some help, just purchased the Canon Vixia HF G21 camcorder and want to self film my hunts but I am totally new to this and don't know anything about it. What settings do you recommend? Thanks in advance for any help
I don’t know just stumbled upon it. I tried looking it up the only exclamation I got was was this Zoom Ratio: 57x Advanced / 32x Optical / 1140x Digital Focal Length: 2.8-89.6mm
I just have one question. If you put your ear to the camera (or very close to it), do you hear the stabilization or AF working? I've noticed, my camera produces a kind of constant rapid ticking, which is loud enough to be recorded by internal microphones with recording level set to automatic in a silent surrounding (but is generally not noticeable when there's some background noise).
@@CrazyWillTechShow Thank you. Mine is not a big problem too when there's some background sound, but I think, this camera ticking was not so loud some time ago (sadly I have no comparable recordings to be sure). Anyway, I'll have to use an external recorder when it becomes a problem (my camera is Legria R88, which does not have a mic port)...
This is fantastic it’s helped me so much! Can I ask what you think the best video editing apps are and what do you use on your videos? Thanks so much 😊

Hi there. Like your videos and I have a question. Is there a way to set a marker when recording to a jump back to, rather than rewatching hours of video?
Love your channel!....Quick question.....I record live bands with a Canon R500, and I use a separate audio recorder (Tascam DR-07) because the audio is much better. I ran into a problem not long ago where I couldn't sinc up the Tascam audio with the Canon audio (using iMovie). No matter what I did, at some point it would go out of sync. Any idea why this would happen , and how to prevent it happening in the future?
Thanks man. If I had to guess I would say your Recording a 24 frames per second and your recorder may be doing 30. I would try different frame rates on your camera I would think that would be it. Another thing that I’ve ran into is different encoders and video Koda. In those cases I run it through iMovie individually then try to put them together. Please let me know if any of these worked. You sparked my curiosity.
@@CrazyWillTechShow Thanks for the quick reply! Not sure what the camera records at. Does 35 Mps sound correct? Not sure what the Tascam recorder is recording at either (it has a sampling frequency of 44.1/48kHz...whatever that is). Any idea how to change the frame rate on the camera??As you can tell, a lot of this is "foreign" to me. Also, I believe that the camera and recorder record in variable frame rate and not constant frame rate, which may be part of the issue. I did read that Handbrake can correct this. Anyway, if my memory serves me, I do recall changing the camera recording from Mp4 to ADCHD mode....and that is when my problem began. So I changed back to MP4 and haven't had any issues.
ok i just need to know if i may ask if the AC adapter does it only work on 110v or can i plug it in on any volts for example a laptop adapter plug can work in any volts from 100v to 240v trying to see if the AC adapter to the Canon can do the same and the next thing i want to know how many watts is the adapter just in case i will use a step down voltage converter if it does not work in 220v outlets
Great information, thanks! I have a DSLR and wanted a cheaper camera I could take hunting and fishing when the weather wasn't gong to be perfect. After doing a lot of research, your videos included . I went with the canon Vixia. Its light easy to pack and I seem to have plenty of battery life for my applications.. Your information about the audio setting has been a great help, and has allowed me to adjust levels for each type of mic I use. Thanks for all the great information!
Question Will, I am thinking of making dvds for my family and friends of the videos I recorded with my Cannon Vixia. Can I record the videos I recorded into a DVD at HD quality like 1080P or will the resolution suffer, do I have to get a Blu Ray burner in order to record in 1080p?
To be honest with you I don’t know. I would think dvd would be fine and full HD 1080p. Now I may try it this weekend. Lol. I share my videos and photos on google drive digitally.
Thanks again for the great info and great video. After watching you're film I finally got the picture I wanted out of my VIXIA! I tried "VIVID" mode but I think I have too much lighting in my garage, I think their rated 6,000 on the Kelvin Scale. Thanks again for you're time and keep the videos coming. #ChiefsKingdom
Crazy Will Tech Show I have a DSLR and use them for weddings but I want something that can continuously record for more than 30 mins, this camcorder looks ideal without paying huge amounts for a professional camcorder. What do you think? I’m sold but would love your advice.
ok so I found my vixia r70 in storage, always heard the audio through those horrible speakers, bought a ride mic and now realize that I probably didn’t need it that bad. well whatever what can I do now. Nice video.
The rode mic should have done the trick, did you adjust the audio? ua-cam.com/video/1gW8HG5AhpA/v-deo.html you could use you smart phone with the mic and sink the audio and post, But that could be a pain. Thanks for watching.
Do you recommend that battery charger and battery kit, mines is the Dste charger and battery from amazon, which takes 8hrs to charge and the camera recognize the battery life.
Hello Will, this post is getting old but I still have a question about this camera. LOL Can you plug the camera in to a wall outlet and record at the same time?
@@CrazyWillTechShow I think the answer is yes, you do mention it in one of your videos. I find out tomorrow, batteries are drainng fast and charging slow, time for new once.
hey i was wondering, im getting the canon vixia hf r700 on adorama for $100 with power ac cable and battery ,so is it possible to chainge the gain on the camera? i have a c920 but for some reason my pc lags when i record with it even at 720p and i have a ryzen 5 1600 processer so its kinda wierd but i just make gaming lets plays and stuff but i whant to upgrade my camera for the recording and quality reason
I think so but it’s a roundabout setting. If you streaming while you’re playing it could be a lot of things. Band with ram. I would talk to other gaming channels that have good streaming video and what they use.
Thanks man sorry I’m not more helpful I just never played with the streaming thing. I don’t Believe I would be good live. Lol Who knows what will come out of my mouth.
Great video as always! Do you have a cheat sheet video somewhere of all your settings you currently use when shooting video? If I asked this before, I apologize. I got hit in the head a lot as a kid, and tend to forget stuff lol
The guy whose video you have linked in the description put a lot of effects on his footage, so it might not be the best example to show what the camera is capable of.
Hey I made the video. Yeah I agree adding effects can take any footage good or bad and alter it to your liking but realistically without a good source it is very hard to have a good outcome. What I mean is. Without having good source footage from the camera I would not be able to make it look good even with effects. (which was all originally shot in 60FPS and rendered down at 24FPS and in program mode with my own custom settings on the VIXIA HF R800) This camera can be used for a wide variety of things. If you watch to the very end of the video though you will see it ends with a scene that although the footage was edited for lighting and what not there are no overlay effects that really changed the footage too much so you can get a great idea of what the camera does without a bunch of FX. Thanks so much for watching and I hope you enjoyed it!
@@CrazyWillTechShow I did the video. I agree with your comment and I also want to thank you very much for the shout out. I just noticed this now haha. I will def make sure to shout out you and your channel next time I do a relevant video and also on my social media.
I'll be interested to know how this camera performs in extreme cold. We did have rain and snow the day of the Santa Claus parade but it was only about minus 5 Celsius or so. Come January, February it will be more like minus 20 .
You've probably been asked this questions already, but is it possible to video record(with a 64gb sd) with the ac adapter plugged in for at least 4-5 hours straight?
You’ll probably only get four hours out of it but you can use the 64gb card which I have in my camera, and ac power will work during recording. I never did long spans of Recording but I remember reading that the New format on the camera only lets you Record 30 minutes at a time then you have to restart it. I could be wrong about that.
I have a VIXIA HF800 and when using it I get 16 min segments of my video. Is there a way to get a video that is continuous and not in the 16 min segments?
@@CrazyWillTechShow Transcend it is the one that came with the Camers when I ordered it. Tonight when I used it it recorded fine went past 16 mins. I'll try it some more and get back to you if the problem occurs again.
Anytime man. If you have any questions shoot them over. I am eventually going to do a video on it and how to set up green screen. Just got to get my stuff together. Lol
Hi, I'm having a problem focusing this camera. When I try to record myself my face is very out of focus, I don't know how to change this. I've heard that the focus is suppose to be automatic.
I'm a Canon guy, having trouble loading my videos to my UA-cam account. I didn't have the driver so maybe that is the problem. I'll download it and then try. I use a PC computer.
@@CrazyWillTechShow what I been doing is using the mini cards and putting the in my tablet to load. But I'm sure there's a way. On my computer it doesn't give me any option to send them. I think it may be my wifi connection.
My Vixia records files with video about 2 or 3 frames behind the audio. I've tried everything. different SD cards, different camera settings, with mic, without mic, no change. Anyone have a clue??
If it plays back on the camera like that then it’s the camera and you’ll have to contact Canon. But if your Bring it into a video editor you may have the Frame rate wrong.
@@CrazyWillTechShow then I'm pretty sure the camera is whacked. When I load the file into any video editor, audio and video files both start at zero but the video is still 2.5 frames late.
@@CrazyWillTechShow It's hard to tell, 2 frames is not a lot. I plan to upload a clap clip to youtube then play it back halfspeed to be sure. Will let you know.
He man..... The software link to Cannon is a dead link. Amazon has them at 169 again but knowing Amazon you can blink and its back to the regular price.
@@CrazyWillTechShow yep, I ordered me a second one. Last one was 172 with tax directly from Amazon. One thing I have learned is to buy from third party sellers and save on the tax. My last one was 158 plus tax. This one is cheaper at 169 and no tax. When I do get started I will run 2 at the same time from different angles and edit them together.

Can you connect an external power source like a battery pack?
I’ve never tried it. I’ll look into that.
@@CrazyWillTechShow like a portable power bank.
I’m a wedding videographer, would you recommend this camera to film ceremonies?
For certain shots or long ceremonies. I’ve used it for family weddings. But if you got the money I would go with canon DSLR like t7i or t8i.
Crazy Will Tech Show I have a DSLR and use them for weddings but I want something that can continuously record for more than 30 mins, this camcorder looks ideal without paying huge amounts for a professional camcorder.
What do you think? I’m sold but would love your advice.
I think it would work you can see my video I compare the two ua-cam.com/video/MZjrsAtLyMk/v-deo.html
ok so I found my vixia r70 in storage, always heard the audio through those horrible speakers, bought a ride mic and now realize that I probably didn’t need it that bad.
well whatever what can I do now. Nice video.
The rode mic should have done the trick, did you adjust the audio? ua-cam.com/video/1gW8HG5AhpA/v-deo.html
you could use you smart phone with the mic and sink the audio and post, But that could be a pain.
Thanks for watching.
Do you recommend that battery charger and battery kit, mines is the Dste charger and battery from amazon, which takes 8hrs to charge and the camera recognize the battery life.
Mine I think take 4 hours and the show Power indication. Bin using them well over a year haven’t had a problem. So yes I would lol.
ok thanks @@CrazyWillTechShow
Just a heads up they are a little smaller and hold less of a charge... sorry just remembered.
Hello Will, this post is getting old but I still have a question about this camera. LOL
Can you plug the camera in to a wall outlet and record at the same time?
I believe so but let me doublecheck it’s been a while.
@@CrazyWillTechShow ok thanks for replying ill do that and do some more reserch on the lag problem. love your vids !!
Thanks man sorry I’m not more helpful I just never played with the streaming thing. I don’t Believe I would be good live. Lol Who knows what will come out of my mouth.
@@CrazyWillTechShow lol its fine
How do you set the iso on the vixia g20??
??? I’m sorry I don’t have that camera.
Great video as always! Do you have a cheat sheet video somewhere of all your settings you currently use when shooting video?
If I asked this before, I apologize. I got hit in the head a lot as a kid, and tend to forget stuff lol
You and me both.... no I don’t but next weeks video is basically Cheat sheet.
Looking forward to that one. I can use a cheat sheet. At age 72 it can be very helpful.
WOW! that awesome 72 and shooting and editing video..... Major respect my friend.
Can you use a lavalier mic with this camera?
yes one of the reasons I bought it.
The guy whose video you have linked in the description put a lot of effects on his footage, so it might not be the best example to show what the camera is capable of.
That's part of video creation. It's all in what you want to do. Still think it a great example of capabilities.
@@THEZAMPCAMP
Thanks for the replies : )
THE ZAMP CAMP thanks man... looks like you hit the monetization level. Congrats.
I'll be interested to know how this camera performs in extreme cold. We did have rain and snow the day of the Santa Claus parade but it was only about minus 5 Celsius or so. Come January, February it will be more like minus 20 .
As far as I know most electronics don’t too good in that weather. I’m in NC we never get that type of weather. So can’t really help u there. Sorry 😐.
Can I use external mic like Boya MM1 on this Canon camcorder? Thanks.
As long is battery powered it should work.
Do you recommend this camera for someone who wants to take UA-cam seriously?
If you’re just starting out and you’re on a budget, yes. That’s how I started.
What size memory card are you using? And what resolution are you shooting at?
@@CrazyWillTechShow I'm using a Transcend 64GB. I have it set on 17Mbhs unsure if that is the correct answer,
Wow never had that problem. I was really hoping you were running out of room. What brand is the memory card?
@@CrazyWillTechShow Transcend it is the one that came with the Camers when I ordered it. Tonight when I used it it recorded fine went past 16 mins. I'll try it some more and get back to you if the problem occurs again.
can you use that as a webcam without a cam link?
No sorry. Only through HDMI.
Will, how do you create video in video?
Compositing software. Take a look at da Vinci resolve. It’s free and very powerful.
@@CrazyWillTechShow Thanks brother.
Anytime man. If you have any questions shoot them over. I am eventually going to do a video on it and how to set up green screen. Just got to get my stuff together. Lol
Is there any remote control ( factory or after market) for this camcorder ?
Unfortunately I searched high and low with no success. A lot of liars out there.
whats with this wierd BLUE outline that counts down then the camera STOPS recordering?
Blue outline?
Hi, I'm having a problem focusing this camera. When I try to record myself my face is very out of focus, I don't know how to change this. I've heard that the focus is suppose to be automatic.
You should just be able to tap on your face on the screen and it put a box around your face.
Does work on a 64bit laptop with windows home 10 64bit ??
Should work fine.
I'm a Canon guy, having trouble loading my videos to my UA-cam account. I didn't have the driver so maybe that is the problem. I'll download it and then try. I use a PC computer.
When you uploaded to UA-cam does it give you an error message? You may have to convert the video.
It’s the same on the camera play back.
@@CrazyWillTechShow It's hard to tell, 2 frames is not a lot. I plan to upload a clap clip to youtube then play it back halfspeed to be sure. Will let you know.
thank you Will! This video answered my "Blonde" questions
At least you have hair😂 it wasn’t a dumb question I get asked it all the time.
Doe's the vixia hf r800 have a firmware update?
I haven’t checked but I doubt it. I’ll look this weekend and see.
@@CrazyWillTechShow thanks
Nope no updates. I have a canon t6i that came out in 2015 never had a firmware update. I don't think canon does them other then oops we messed up. lol
@@CrazyWillTechShow thanks again
He man..... The software link to Cannon is a dead link. Amazon has them at 169 again but knowing Amazon you can blink and its back to the regular price.
Yeah I figured it would be on sale.. yeah don’t know why it wasn’t working but I fixed it. Thanks for letting me know and thanks for watching.
That awesome lot of editing but awesome... Yeah wish I got that deal but there well worth $250 I paid.
@@CrazyWillTechShow And because I buy stuff on Amazon with gift cards from Kroger I earned 23.00 worth of free gas. It's fun when you figure out some of these little tricks. When I finally start doing my videos I will make sure I do one on this. I average 22% off on everything I buy at Lowe's.
too much music! too loud. Thankfully it stopped and I am grateful for all this info. Thank you.
I'm not a fan of recording in 60fps. Always looks weird to me, haha.
I agree. I like 30fps!
Thanks alot
1:41 click Thumbs up if you think its stupid to not include an SD CARD READER on the CPU.
1:41 click Thumbs up if you think its ok to not have an SD CARD READER included on the CPU.
Thanks for the Q and A's Will. My first video with the Vixia ONLY I shot here: ua-cam.com/video/pLyTyjl18XM/v-deo.html The setting I believe were at 35fps but during the parade I switched to Auto and found out when I imported the clips that the fps has changed. :) I am still figuring things out. and you are giving me inspiration to keep experimenting.
