Please note, if you own a recent camera with UVC/UAC compatibility you may not need to use this method using a capture card on the HDMI output. You may be able to connect between the camera's USB-C port and your phone using a USB cable. I believe this is the case with some Sony cameras and Canon's EOS R6 Mkii, R8, and R50. If there is an app for your camera, such as Canon's Camera Connect, you can use also use that. However, my experience of Canon's app is that it can be a bit flaky and also very laggy (not great for video). Furthermore, the image cannot be made full screen in the app, whereas the image in USB Camera Pro used in this video, allows you to see the camera output full screen.
I'm glad this helped. You might also like one of my newer videos that lets you connect a camera to a phone while also charging the phone from a powerbank, thereby extending the shooting time further. Here's the link. ua-cam.com/video/ggz9T2kOXWE/v-deo.html
Mate, you're a legend. I've been looking at doing something like this for my Astrophotography set up. The screen on my old Nikon is tiny and my eyes aren't what they used to be. This will make focussing with a Bahtinov mask and framing much easier. Many thanks sir!
I am writing to help other people. Works with Cannon power shot g3x, I did not do long tests, but at first glance everything is fine, the buttons on the camera work and you can record on the camera's SD card! Many thanks to the author of the channel for the video again!
I've just got mine set up .. thank you sir for the tutorial .. usb video capture card, mini hdmi to hdmi cable, type c OTG adapter & a ulanzi cold shoe phone mount .. total at SGD17 .. I'm using the free usb camera app to play around a bit 1st.
Your videos are high quality, enjoyable to watch and really helpful, thank you! Your videos have really nice voice audio qualities, especially this one filmed outdoors with a lav mic - have you made a video about the way you process your audio as part of your video editing workflow? Thanks
Thanks. No, I've not made a video about processing my audio yet, but plan to do so. I would say that recording outside is a great way to avoid the roomy echoey sound you can often get with lav mics, but you do get the problem of background noise (like neighbors cutting their grass etc.). That can be fixed if you are willing to pay for noise reduction plugins, but I've heard there's a new free AI plugin for Audacity that can clean up audio recorded in a noisy environment. I've therefore added this as a topic to cover in a forthcoming video.
I must say I’m really glad I found your video. I was on the verge of buying a monitor ! So I got all the bits required and fantastic ! Everything works as it should. Except anything to do with touchscreen. I can use the zebra peaking false colour etc. but I have too change settings on the camera buttons. But I’m not disappointed. It’s just great too have a big monitor. Believe me, the Sony RX0 mkii needs it. It doesn’t seem to want to let me shoot stills though ? I’ll need to look into that. Thanks
Thanks for commenting. Not everyone needs to use a monitor and recorder like the Ninja V, but having a larger display makes composition a lot easier and is good for people like me, who occasionally need to show the camera's screen in a video tutorial or blog post.
Sir, you're so gentle. Thank you veeery much for explaining this process with special detail, I do love the way you speak! English is not my first language but I understood everything you said perfectly. And this tutorial is super helpful since I was looking for the correct cables and the correct the app. So again, thanks a lot! Thanks for sharing your knowledge with the world.
Thanks for the video. I have Panasonic MFT cameras, each with wifi. Panasonic do their own control app and with it, I can control my camera, starting and stopping video as well as taking images. When using a gimbal, there are no bits of wire to get in the way. I made a shroud for my phone using plastic sheet with the inside covered in non-reflective foam sheet from Hobbycraft. I know I sound a bit ‘careful’ with costs, but I don’t think of that as a criticism. It is something of a relief not to be asked at the start of a YT video ‘What’s up?’, and I thank you for that.
That's good. My Canon camera also has a mobile app that does the same, however it's laggy and you can't monitor the video full screen. That's why this is a useful (and cheap) solution if you don't have something a Ninja V. It also allows you to record the overlay on the camera screen, which is useful if you're making HowTo videos about using the camera.
Good to hear that. I can do the same with the Canon Camera Connect app, but you can't make the view full screen. That's where this method wins. However, the Camera Connect app doe allow you to control the camera, something you can't do with this setup.
a couple questions 1) does this work for photography 2) would a straight microUSB to USb-C work instead of usign the video capture card? 3) would this work with sony cameras? or cameras equipped with wifi? 4) does it lag at all when using?
In answer to your points. 1) I don't see why not. In fact, I initially hit upon the idea of using my phone when looking for a better and inexpensive way to compose landscape images without having to spend £500+ on a Ninja V. 2) No. You need the video capture card. 3) Provided it has an HDMI output you'll be fine. If you want to use wifi then use the app provided by the camera manufacturer. Canon has Camera Connect, but I gave up on it because it's dreadful and I couldn't get the image to fill the screen (althougfh it's better on a tablet but the app and their wireless tech is dreadful). 4) Yes there is a lag, but slightly less than when using Camera Connect. This is meant as a "cheap and cheerful" solution costing under $20 that will give you a better view of the scene, to aid composion, than you'll get on the camera's LCD screen. It is not meant to be a cheap replacement for expensive external monitors and recorders, nor it is suitable where you must react to fast action, like sports and bird/wildlife photography.
I'm so happy this video came up in my algorthm. I plan on taking a holiday in Iceland later this year. As well as, I'm going to get into filming as I'm an actor and looking at different ways to get get that going without going into incredible debt! LOL SUB!
@@DIYVideoStudio Thank you! I really enjoy your video and look forward to me. You're straight to the point without unnecessary fluff. Cheers from Los Angeles!
Cool solution for doing it with wires. The other way is that most cameras with hdmi also have wireless to android phone. I also like having the remote shutter via WiFi for photos.
Yes most cameras offer a wireless solution. But my experience with Canon cameras is that the camera app sucks and the wireless tech in DSLR/Mirrorless cameras is way behind what smartphones can do.
oh wow am I ever happy to have found this. I was curious about doing this, ive got lots of old phones and use for body cams, dash cams etc.. but I would love to have larger screen for my Cam. Thx for the tips mate. Subbed. Cheers.
This is great. I have saved to my Watch Later list, so I have it easily accessible. I don't need it right now, but can see needing it if I ever wanted to record someone else. But what I have thought of using it for is for recording myself, but I would see if I could use a blue tooth connection.
When I record myself I find the vari-angle screen and the inputs for the mic and headphones are on the same side, so the mini-jacks and cables get in the way and make it difficult to judge if I'm in the middle. Being able to see myself on my phone makes framing much easier.
@@DIYVideoStudio Same issue. Why I have things set standard in my office. I still want to see if I can connect my Android to my Canon via bluetooth. I have the instructions but have been lazy in trying it.
@@topshelfva You can use the Canon Canon Connect app to link to your Canon camera. Personally I don't like it, but you can see yourself and control your camera.
Thanks for the sub Peter! I hope you find the setup useful. BTW. After connecting, if you find that the screen in the app is blank or frozen, tap on the USB icon to open a list of USB devices (there'll probably only be one device) and then tap on your camera/capture card again. That usually does the trick. Unfortunately I only found that out after publishing this video. BTW. If you want to see what footage looks like that has bee recorded from a mirrorless camera to a Samsung phone, check out the video that I have scheduled to go live this Friday.
What I'd recommend instead of the corded cable, I'd recommend a micro-HDMI to HDMI (female) converter and a short (50cm) HDMI cable. It has roughly the same profile.
Although you can use this method to capture video on the phone, it's primarily for monitoring the camera output on the phone screen. Some recent cameras with UVC/UAC compatibility may be able to to connect directly from the camera's HDMI output to the phone's USB-C port, otherwise you will need the capture card. I tend to use the capture card with a USB-C output to minimize the number of parts.
Hi great explanation. Do you know if there is a time limit on usb camera b4 stops working. Was ok 2 days ago just got my canon back and now won’t work. Many thanks
I've not experienced a time limit on the app, but I paid for the Pro version, so perhaps that's different. There's also another app you can try. I've used Endoscope USB, but you need to pay if you want higher resolutions. Thanks for leaving a comment.
Awesome video! Do you know if there is a way to make the app auto rotate? When I turn my camera on its side for a vertical picture, the image on my phone is still in the horizontal. I can fix this in the settings by manually pressing the "rotate 270°", but its kind of a buzz kill. Thanks
On my Canon R6 the LCD/EVF also goes blank when the HDMI output is enabled, although there is a setting that does turn the LCD screen back on but at the cost of not recording to the SD card.
It's not an Atomos replacement because the Ninja V (etc.) does a lot more (it also costs several hundred dollars more). However, you can record video to your phone if you need to, but it will use the motion jpeg format. I've got a video scheduled for this Friday that includes a clip of me recorded onto my Android phone from my Canon EOS R6. Make sure you're subscribed so that you get notified when the video is released.
Did I get you you right, that the adapter is just adapting the different plug sizes / designs? Or in other words. If I would have a cabel with the small HDMI-plug (Canon) on one side and a USB-C plug on the other side I would be able to connect my mobile phone directly with my camera?
For this method, and cameras like the EOS R and R6, you need the video capture. If you have a more recent camera that includes UVC/UAC compatibility, you should be able to connect the camera to the phone from the camera's USB-C port to the phone, using a USB cable (although I have not tested this). I believe this is the case with some Sony cameras and Canon's EOS R6 Mkii, R8, and R50.
Bummed! Got everything but didn't work. It is from a Panasonic to an Android, so I don't know if it a Panasonic issue. Anyway, enjoy your straightforward approach. New sub!
@@DIYVideoStudio I typically film at 4K. But adjusting the camera setting to 1080p, then this system works. Do you know if the USB Camera PRO supports 4K filming? Thanks.
@@fafaegregory The video capture cards I used in the video will take a 4K video input but then output 1080p video. That works with the Pro app (only displays/records up to 1080p). But when trying the Elgato 4K capture card (that outputs 4K video), the Pro app often displays a blank screen but when it does work it again displays/records at 1080p. I've used both the Canon EOS R and R6 with 4K output connected the way I show in the video and the video shows up on the Pro app, but as mentioned, the video is 1080p by the time it gets to the phone. Obviously there's something different happening with your Panasonic, but I hope you can get it to work to your satisfaction.
Great presentation… will the app work with ios on iphone and here’s the big question. I shoot video in 4k with Sony ZV1 & RX10 but have issues with ‘the flip screens dimming quite severe and it’s an issue Will monitoring on the phone eliminate this dimming or reproduce it? Many thanks
USB Camera Pro is available for iOS, follow this link apps.apple.com/us/app/usb-camera-pro/id6450152282 If the screens on your cameras are dimming and not the actual video output, then you should be fine on the phone.
Nicely done. I’m hoping I can figure this out with a Sony RX100 vii as it’s not supported by the monitor+ app. I have an iPad mini 6 that I would prefer to use, but also a Samsung Galaxy S6 lite so will be giving it a go this weekend.
Sorry, I don't quite understand, if I use the capture card method, will I be able to use the physical buttons on the camera itself? Will the video be recorded on the PHONE ITSELF or on the memory card of the camera from which I output the image? I need to use my phone only as an external monitor, and not record video on it, I want to record video on the camera's memory card, I hope you understand my question. Thanks for the interesting blog!
@user-nr8bn7bw4c You use the buttons on the camera and record on the camera's SD card. There is an option to record on the phone, but you’ll get better quality by recording to your camera's SD card. The advantage of this setup is that you get a larger screen than the LCD display on the camera, making composition and checking focus a little easier.
@@DIYVideoStudioThank you very much for the quick reply! So I can record video to the camera's SD card, that's great! I'll buy a capture card and try this with a Canon power shot g3x, I'll write about the results to help other people, thank you!!
Does this setup enable you to use both camera screen and cellphone/monitor screen? I have a Canon R7 and Feelworld F6 Plus but my main concern is that Canon turns off the camera screen when a field monitor is connected.
Your Canon camera's screen will go blank, as it does with my R and R6. You lose the ability to control the camera from the touch screen and instead need to use the buttons and dials.
some more questions: when your phone is connected like that , is then the battery from your phone also loaded whit power from the battery from the camera? Can you whit, the app ,your phone only using like a field monitor or is it also possible to control your camera through your phone?
The camera does not provide power to your phone. If you need to charge the phone you'll need the USB hub that I mentioned in the video, or use the adapter I talk about in this newer video. ua-cam.com/video/ggz9T2kOXWE/v-deo.html This set up only lets you view what you would normally see on the back of the camera, but the screen size is likely to be larger and therefore useful. You'll need to control the camera using the buttons and dials on the phone. If you need to grab video or stills of what's on the camera's LCD screen (if you're making How-To videos or tutorials) make sure you check out the video I'm publishing this Friday. It includes footage of video recorded from my EOS R6 to my Samsung phone.
Canon already connects wirelessly to phones. Has for at least 10 years. What is the advantage of using a wired connection, if any? Just the ability to use it full screen with your method?
Yes I know about Canon's Camera Connect app. In some ways it is better because the app allows you to control the camera remotely, however you cannot make the preview full screen. This allows your view to be bigger, which I find useful. If you also create how-to videos/blogs, it also allows you to capture the screen on the camera. That avoids picking up reflections and glare, as you often get when trying to photograph the camera's screen. So it's just another tool that has its pros and cons.
Although the R5 was released in 2020 (along with the R6), it is still a stunning camera. However, as you say, it sucks that it can't link directly to a phone via USB-C like the R6 MkII and presumably the soon to be launched R5 MkII. If I had the spare cash right now I would pre-order the R5 MkII because of the new features it offers, although a second hand R5 would also be tempting since the price is sure to drop soon.
@@DIYVideoStudio yeah I got it in a nice discount last september, so I'm not looking to make another big purchase. Might get the MKII next year and then keep the R5 as a second body.
@@thedancingqueen9567 You've probably done this, but have you tapped the phone screen to get rid of the app menu and maximize the display? I'm sure that worked when I tried the free version of the app before upgrading to the paid app.
Although you can record to the phone, that's not really what I would use this setup for, since you'd be limiting yourself. Yes you can record to the camera's SD card (providing you use the correct setting in the camera's menu), and that's what I do when using this setup with my Canon R and R6. I hope that helps.
The camera must have an HDMI output port, preferably clean HDMI output (you don't see any text or the over overlays on the back of your camera). I believe the Nikon D3300 can do so. You're phone must also be OTG compatible. If you are unsure about the latter, you can download an app (such as USB to OTG Converter) that will check whether your phone is supports OTG technology.
Thanks great info - But if you have a Canon Camera with built-in WiFi you can use their "Camera Connect ' app which is Free, controls your camera and monitor. No additional video capture card Just a thought.
I have the Camera Connect app and it has some good and some not so good point. It's good that Camera Connect allows you to control the phone remotely from your phone or tablet, but the downside is that you can't make the view full screen. That's OK on a tablet but on a phone the viewable screen is about the same or smaller than the camera's LCD screen. Furthermore, I've found the wireless connection to be somewhat flaky, limited in range, and laggy. Nonetheless, it's good to have the option.
@@DIYVideoStudio thanks I didn't know that Canon Camera Connect doesn't fill the full screen on phone, tablet etc. ? I'm guessing it's reduced by camera functions on either sides? Like you said a tablet works better - larger screen. But how does it work controlling the camera?
It's possible to (using the USB Camera Pro app) to record video or take a snapshot (still) on the phone of the feed from the DSLR/Mirrorless camera. So, yes, you can get an image onto the Android device and then share it.
@@DIYVideoStudio Basically the idea is if you're at a party with your Canon DSLR your phone is connected to the DSLR you take pictures of your guests and immediately they can view it on the Android phone and share it to their text or email. Is it possible to do that?
This a really good video,I have a question are there any settings that would allow me to take photos on the camera and save them both to the camera and my phone? Many thanks.Mike.
Thank you. You should be able to take photos on the camera and send them to your phone by using your camera's app. For instance, if you have a Canon camera, use the Canon Camera Connect App from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store.
Thanks for a great video. I have everything working, but my video output on the phone is in split screen (screen is duplicated horizontally). I can't figure out how to get rid of it. Any ideas?
@@DIYVideoStudio Not to worry. I had another old Android phone lying around and it's working perfectly on that one. I must have messed up the config on the other somehow ... or it could be a bug. It's all good. Thanks again, this is a great and economical solution to a real problem. It was a real struggle trying to record using just the camera monitor. Can't wait to try this out in the field.
Hi. Can you shot in 4K & LOG profile if you are using the phone as external monitor? This is extremly important for me as I always shoot in LOG and with my Accsoon I can only shoot 1080 classic pricture profine :(. Thank you
Yes you can still shoot 4K and LOG to your SD card, provided you use an HDMI setting on your camera that delivers an HDMI output and simultaneous recording to the camera's SD card. Although you can record video and photos to the phone, I don't recommend it for high quality capture. This setup is really about using the phone as an external camera monitor as an aid to composition, checking the focus, and other setting. It's not setting up the phone as an external camera monitor and recorder like the Ninja V.
I'm sorry to hear it's not working for you. Sometimes when this doesn't work it's often the fault of the app or the phone. The phone must be OTG enabled (many recent phones are). If that is the case then you can try a different app. Alternative apps I've tried include: USB Endoscope app Android 10+ and USB OTG camera. I hope that helps.
@@DIYVideoStudio Its a Canon R10 and Phone OTG is on, OTG kabel tested with RTLSDR. Android 10. Phone connector is Micro USB. I did try a differ video capture card the one with the cable on it. I order the USB card you using to see if helps. Otherwise keep using WiFi and BT to view pictures.
You will see the output of the screen on your phone whether the camera is in video or stills mode. Although you can record video to your phone and even take "snapshot" stills on your phone, I don't recommend doing so because the resolution and image quality will be much better when you save to the camera's SD card. You might like to watch another video of mine that shows how you can record to the phone (if you need to do that), here's the link ua-cam.com/video/Pm1jxGCmvVY/v-deo.html
Can you use your phone to record video to keep camera from overheating? I'm using a canon m200 and a Samsung galaxy s20fe. I am new to digital photography and film with a proper camera.
You can use the USB Camera app to record your video, but you'll be limited in the resolution and video quality. I believe the M200 can manage 4K output, but most of these inexpensive video capture cards will stop you from capturing 4K. If you read the Amazon listings carefully, they usually say that they can accept a 4K input, but they will only output a 1080p signal. When I tried using a capture card that can output 4K video (CamLink 4K) the USB Camera app wouldn't display the video. Furthermore, the recording app probably won't offer you the best recording codecs that are available on your M200.
I want to connect my EOS R to android tablet S8 ultra ; to use it as a monitor for my cam . how can I get the best quality 4k results?? And do u recommend a specific Vedio capture card ???
The main problem you'll have is that most of the capture cards that mention 4K only accept a 4K input but output a 1080p signal. A dongle sized capture card that does output 4K@30fps is the Elgato CamLink 4K, however, this is now about $99, if you can find it at all. Compared to the cheap 1080p output cards, the CamLink 4K is 5 or 6 times more expensive, although the image quality is a little better. The other problem is that I don't see that you can change the resolution in the USB Camera Pro App. If you can get a CamLink 4K, it will improve the video quality slightly, although if it's just for monitor purposes I don't think the extra quality is worth the extra cash. However, I don't know what you intend doing, so you might think otherwise.
Thank you so much for your reply but I have got a question, please .. I am using eos R , & I need to attach external monitor via hdmi or cable Cand i want the info to be shown on both displays (( cam screen & monitor )) during both vedio & photo modes. Best regards
@@ahmedelshall8946 I have just tested this on my EOR. Press the menu button and go to the red Shoot 4 screen. The bottom menu item is "HDMI display" with a picture of the camera's display + a monitor. Select this and you'll go into the submenu where you have two choices, the camera screen + external monitor or just external monitor. Make sure the camera screen + external monitor are selected. You'll get a warning that "Playback or menus are displayed only on screen of devices connected via HDMI". Then press the SET button and exit the menu. You can then connect the capture card to the camera and Android device (I used my Samsung A53-5G). You should get a message on the Android screen, tap OK. If the USB Camera app remains blank, tape the USB devices icon and tap on the capture card that is listed on the screen. The screen should then mirror the back of the camera. If it still doesn't work, disconnect everything. Close the USB Camera app, and switch off the EOS R. Switch on the camera again, reconnect, and hopefully this time the USB Camera app will show the feed from the camera. I tried this with both of the capture cards I mentioned in the video and it worked fine (eventually), but when I tried the CamLink 4K, although my phone recognised the CamLink 4K and was receiving audio, the screen remained blank. Although you will see the camera output on the camera's screen and your Android device, if you press the Menu button or try to playback video, the camera's output will only be visible on your phone/tablet. But you can use all the controls on the back of the camera. You won't be able to use the camera's touch screen, nor will you be able to use your phone/tablet as a touch screen for the menu. Using the EOS R is actually better than the later EOS R5 or R6. When you use this mode on those cameras you can't record to the camera's SD card and can only record to your external device. I hope this helps.
@DIYVideoStudio thanks so much.. Will try it .. Should I disable the WiFi connection to get the hdmi connected ??? And what about the photo mode ?? Can both screens be working ?? You'll see your camera's display on your phone, so it doesn't matter whether you're shooting video or still images. Like video, you will need to use the controls on your camera to make any changes to your camera settings.
This set up displays your camera's screen on your phone and I have used it to give me a larger display when shooting landscape images (helpful to compose and focus). Don't, however, save the images by taking a snapshot on your phone. Save the images to your camera's SD card as usual, since the resolution will be much higher.
First, let me say I've not tried using the phone as a monitor when also using a speedlite on the camera. I also assume you are not saving the images to the camera using the app's snapshot feature (I wouldn't do that). Therefore, I'm guessing you're asking about a situation where your camera settings would give a dark image with ambient or "house" lights, but correct for the speedlite flash. Normally the phone display will be dark in this situation because the camera will have Exposure Simulation enabled in the Red camera menu. Disable Exo. Simulation and you'll see a "bright" image of the scene on the camera or phone, irrespective of your camera's exposure settings. Remember you can also adjust your display brightness in the menu settings. Don't forget to change back to Expo.Simulation once you've finished. I hope that helps.
Thank you for your reply. Not with a Speedlight on the camera, rather a transmitter (master) to a remote flash (slave). Is it possible to use off camera flash while using the phone as a monitor to take pics? @@DIYVideoStudio

hey man, im interested in doing this with my camera but as it is an older canon rebel xs, i am not seeing an hdmi port, i have 2 round type ports, 1 bigger 1 smaller, not sure what type of connecters, and what appears to be a mini usb, how should i go about connecting my hdmi capture card to my camera? any help would be appreciated! edit: from some research i have done it looks like the top round cord is a video out cord, not sure if its a specific type just a video out and the bottom one which is smaller is for the canon remote thing (i think) how should i go about making this work? also if this helps i am only using the camera for pictures, A because its the only thing i can do on it and B because if i want videos i will just use my phone
Having done a little digging, it seems that the camera does have a video output but I don't think it's an HDMI output, so this set up probably won't work for you. If you just want to see images on a computer screen and save the images to your computer, you could download the EOS Utilities software from Canon's websites. Shooting tethered would let you see the images on your computer screen and let you save the images to your computer (and camera's SD card). However, this is only a solution if you're going to be working indoors and don't need to move about. It's not really a solution for outdoor shoots where you need mobility.
Yes you do need the video card. This setup is about using a phone as a camera monitor and not as an external recorder (such as a Ninja V). Although you can record video or photos onto the phone using the USB Camera app, that's not what this setup is really about. If you do record on the phone, the quality will not be as good as recording to the camera's SD card, so it's only something I would do if I wanted to have a record of the camera screen (eg if I were making a tutorial video).
Hey! I have a problem; the app says that no device is connected. I'm using a mini HDMI to HDMI cable with a USB C male to HDMI female adapter. I am guessing that the problem is with adapter. I didn't buy video capture card.
Hi. USB-C to HDMI adapters are usually work the opposite way to the video capture card. They let you connect devices like a PC, phone, or tablet, to an external screen. This can be an HDTV, monitor, or projector, so you can watch movies or TV shows on a larger screen, or use a larger screen to a laptop. If you didn't get the video capture card, that's probably the problem. If you want to keep connections to a minimum, you can use a HDMI to USB-C video capture card, like I mention in the video. Good Luck.

@@DIYVideoStudio Thanks, I'm looking forward to those future videos. Cheers!
Thanks
I'm pleased you've found the video helpful. You're right, you have to use the controls on the camera, but at least it works. Good luck.
This is a very helpful one to be honest. Underrated but very useful
Thanks for commenting. Not everyone needs to use a monitor and recorder like the Ninja V, but having a larger display makes composition a lot easier and is good for people like me, who occasionally need to show the camera's screen in a video tutorial or blog post.
The video i was looking for. Excellent!

Good luck with your camera work.
I use my Pentax's Image Sync app connected with camera's Wi-Fi and Ulanzi holder in hot shoe just like yours. No wires. Works fine for me
Good to hear that. I can do the same with the Canon Camera Connect app, but you can't make the view full screen. That's where this method wins. However, the Camera Connect app doe allow you to control the camera, something you can't do with this setup.
@@DIYVideoStudio yep, just to control camera and have articulated viewfinder it's more than suitable
@@igor_timofeev I'm one of the lucky one's that can't get image sync to work on my phone, only on my tablet 😢
Thumbs up... It worked for my Nikon d750... & I have been struggling with this for so long.
That's fantastic. So glad it worked for you.
a couple questions
1) does this work for photography
2) would a straight microUSB to USb-C work instead of usign the video capture card?
LOL SUB!

Glad I could help!

Thank you.
You area a legend was just looking at doing this myself , you have solved all questions , have sub'ed , cheers Pete Western Australia .

Hey! I just want to see what i'm looking at when taking pictures instead of video capturing can i just use usb-c to hdmi adapter?
Thank you sir. I'll try this before i buy a a dedicated monitor
You're welcome. I hope it performs well for you.
Awesome video! Do you know if there is a way to make the app auto rotate? When I turn my camera on its side for a vertical picture, the image on my phone is still in the horizontal. I can fix this in the settings by manually pressing the "rotate 270°", but its kind of a buzz kill. Thanks
Not that I know of.
Thanks for this, got it working, the only downside is with my r7, there is no way to record the evf, while also using the evf, Oh well.
On my Canon R6 the LCD/EVF also goes blank when the HDMI output is enabled, although there is a setting that does turn the LCD screen back on but at the cost of not recording to the SD card.
Thanks, very useful information for photographer.
Glad it was helpful!
Great video Sir. Very informative. Will it also record the evf or can you view only...so could this be an atomos replacement?? Thunk you
It's not an Atomos replacement because the Ninja V (etc.) does a lot more (it also costs several hundred dollars more). However, you can record video to your phone if you need to, but it will use the motion jpeg format. I've got a video scheduled for this Friday that includes a clip of me recorded onto my Android phone from my Canon EOS R6. Make sure you're subscribed so that you get notified when the video is released.
@@DIYVideoStudio Thank you will do👍👍I just want to record my EVF for my YT channel without buying an Atomos.

New sub!
Sorry to hear this didn't work for you, but glad you enjoyed the approach.
@@DIYVideoStudio I think it is either a setting or connection issue from the Panasonic. I'll let you know if I resolve it
@@DIYVideoStudio I typically film at 4K.

With the Canon Camera application, it works without any adapter, only with the usb cable or via wifi
Yes, but it doesn't show the image full screen, although it does let you control the camera from the phone.
Nicely done.
I’m hoping I can figure this out with a Sony RX100 vii as it’s not supported by the monitor+ app.
I have an iPad mini 6 that I would prefer to use, but also a Samsung Galaxy S6 lite so will be giving it a go this weekend.
Good luck 👍
Top notch video. Thanks for sharing it with us. ❤❤❤❤
You're welcome.
Doing this now with my R5, and it sucks that I have to go this route for such a high-end camera when the R6MKII can go direct to usb-c

Hi. With this setup, does it also save recorded video and stills to the cameras sd card ? Thanks
Although you can record to the phone, that's not really what I would use this setup for, since you'd be limiting yourself. Yes you can record to the camera's SD card (providing you use the correct setting in the camera's menu), and that's what I do when using this setup with my Canon R and R6. I hope that helps.
Does this work for all cameras, especially my camera which is nikon d3300?
The camera must have an HDMI output port, preferably clean HDMI output (you don't see any text or the over overlays on the back of your camera). I believe the Nikon D3300 can do so. You're phone must also be OTG compatible. If you are unsure about the latter, you can download an app (such as USB to OTG Converter) that will check whether your phone is supports OTG technology.
Thanks great info - But if you have a Canon Camera with built-in WiFi you can use their "Camera Connect ' app which is Free, controls your camera and monitor.
No additional video capture card
Just a thought.

Great video. can you take a picture through Canon DSLR and store it to share on Android.
It's possible to (using the USB Camera Pro app) to record video or take a snapshot (still) on the phone of the feed from the DSLR/Mirrorless camera. So, yes, you can get an image onto the Android device and then share it.
You think you can do a video on how to do this. I'm sure 1,000s of your follow like me could be interested in how to do it.

@@DIYVideoStudio Not to worry. I had another old Android phone lying around and it's working perfectly on that one. I must have messed up the config on the other somehow ... or it could be a bug.
It's not setting up the phone as an external camera monitor and recorder like the Ninja V.
good evening sir. Can i use this set up with my canon EOS 90d. Cheers John
The 90d has an HDMI output, so you will be able to view the normal screen output on your phone.
Thanks for the great info and links.
My pleasure.
Thank you for this very good information. The only problem, i not get it running using a capture card :) APP not find the card stick in.

Hi. Does this provide a good application for shooting stills 🙏
You will see the output of the screen on your phone whether the camera is in video or stills mode. Although you can record video to your phone and even take "snapshot" stills on your phone, I don't recommend doing so because the resolution and image quality will be much better when you save to the camera's SD card.
Simple and direct cheer's ❤️
Thanks.
Does the app also provide video playback? And does it also do live display while filming a video?
Thank you so much for your reply
but I have got a question, please ..
I am using eos R , & I need to attach external monitor via hdmi or cable Cand i want the info to be shown on both displays (( cam screen & monitor )) during both vedio & photo modes.

On the Redmin note 11 pro worked well, on the other two im getting, or color bars like no signal, or im getting some capture but it all bugged, i like to think that its a phone thing, but the Moto G54 is a new one and i downloaded the otg app to check and its compatible, i dont know what to do 🙁
@max_91 Because not all Android phones are designed and made the same (obviously), some are more compatible than others. It's unfortunate.
Hello sir the video is so good but I have question what if I just want to attach mobile for photography not the videography ❤
You'll see your camera's display on your phone, so it doesn't matter whether you're shooting video or still images. Like video, you will need to use the controls on your camera to make any changes to your camera settings.
great video i have one question if connect headphone to phone i can hear the camera mic or is only video ?
I haven't tested that, but I think you should hear the audio that is sent to the phone. But as I said, I have not tried that.
Is it possible for me to use this method to do live streaming? Please clarify me on this. Really interested
I've not tried, but I think it’s possible
I'm a beginner can I use this setup for photo too or just video?
This set up displays your camera's screen on your phone and I have used it to give me a larger display when shooting landscape images (helpful to compose and focus). Don't, however, save the images by taking a snapshot on your phone. Save the images to your camera's SD card as usual, since the resolution will be much higher.
Very cool, Thanks
Thank you too!
Thanks for this!
You're welcome
I have a Canon r62. Is there a configuration when working with a Speedlight transmitter and phone monitor? thank you!
@Bob-tu2xg I don't see why not, but if I have some spare time tomorrow, I will give it a go and get back to you.
I have tried the setup with a wireless trigger that mounts on may camera's hotshoe while the phone is connected to my R6. Everything worked, with the images saved to the camera's SD card. Obviously I couldn't mount the phone on the camera. If you addeda cage etc. you could mount the phone on that.
thank you for taking the extra step! Next is finding a mount. Happy holidays!@@DIYVideoStudio
So beautiful and nice man!
Thanks a lot!
Thank you for this, sir!
Thank you exactly whta I wanted to see.
Glad I could help
I use Monitor+. The free is already good for free monitor and control the camera parameters. The pro has all the features from a pro monitor. Only 24$
Thank you so much. it is useful !!!
I'm pleased you found the video useful.
hey man, im interested in doing this with my camera but as it is an older canon rebel xs, i am not seeing an hdmi port, i have 2 round type ports, 1 bigger 1 smaller, not sure what type of connecters, and what appears to be a mini usb, how should i go about connecting my hdmi capture card to my camera? any help would be appreciated!
edit: from some research i have done it looks like the top round cord is a video out cord, not sure if its a specific type just a video out and the bottom one which is smaller is for the canon remote thing (i think) how should i go about making this work? also if this helps i am only using the camera for pictures, A because its the only thing i can do on it and B because if i want videos i will just use my phone
It's not really a solution for outdoor shoots where you need mobility.
ahh ok, wasn't sure if it would work or not, thanks for the help!
Great video!!!
Thanks.
Diy - greetings Sir.
If im shooting 'Photos' - Landscapes, do i need a capture card, if im only using as a live-view, _focusing aid_ ?????
Yes you do need the video card. This setup is about using a phone as a camera monitor and not as an external recorder (such as a Ninja V). Although you can record video or photos onto the phone using the USB Camera app, that's not what this setup is really about. If you do record on the phone, the quality will not be as good as recording to the camera's SD card, so it's only something I would do if I wanted to have a record of the camera screen (eg if I were making a tutorial video).
Thanks for the video!
You're welcome. I hope it was useful.
Good Luck.
Nice video thanks a lot
Thanks.
Has anyone used this method with the Sony A7iii please? Thank you very much for the video.
