"A great tactician creates plans.
A good tactician, recognizes the soundness of a plan presented to him. A fair tactician must see the plan succeed before offering approval." ~ *Grand Admiral Thrawn* ~
“I am a warrior, Your Majesty. A warrior may retreat. He does not flee. He may lie in ambush. He does not hide. He may experience victory or defeat. He does not cease to serve.”
-- Mitth'raw'nuruodo, “Star Wars: Thrawn”, Chapter 3 (2017) by Timothy Zahn
First time I’ve seen his name spelled and now I get why no one can pronounce it
@@andrewmichael9201read the (old) Thrawn trilogy, the books are awesome!
Beautifully edited video and summary of Grand Admiral Thrawn's life from Legends. Plus that pronunciation of his full Chiss name was beyond impressive XD
Thank ya kindly good sir! We'll have to team up on something at somepoint at sometime!
+The Templin Institute Absolutely we should!
+NRI Media Thank you!
That would be awesome to see Lore Master and Templin Institute team up
The Templin Institute
Can you do a video on Anakin Skywalker Canon or Legends?
"But it was so artistically done."
Erndem Sterff Prederctions too bad that was cut. RIP.
Classic last words
Which odd occurrences?
@@7erikgiles considering thrawn never resurfaced even when the yuzahn vong arrived he died on that bridge. How artistic that despite his egalitarian views his continuation of Darth Vader's policy of oppressing the noghiri is what led to his defeat.
Bezerker21 technically he never opressed the noghiri. The noghiri were given to him and all he did was have them be bodyguards with rukh being one of his most trusted officers alongside pellaeon.
Thrawn's fault was not truly learning or comprehending the noghiri's hatred
FINALLY A VIDEO ABOUT THRAWN!
Matteo Kropej
I know right it's awesome
Jean-Luc Martel
Indeed
There are dozens of Thrawn videos on every Star Wars channel. If he so important, they should put him in an actual movie instead of a disney cartoon.
PathsUnwritten Star Wars Rebels is canon and as important as any film in the canon. I would love to see Thrawn in a live action film though. I’ve been thinking about if there is a way to bring him into episode 9. It probably won’t happen but maybe he will get a Star Wars Story movie.
wesrm1 I’m right with you that he’s canon. However, I wish that if he’s so extremely important that every Star Wars UA-cam channel has so many dedicated videos, they should do more than an occasional cartoon appearance. Most people interested in Star Wars will only watch the movies and have no idea who all these videos are talking about.
Thrawn: In summary, a man of knowledge, tactics, and warfare, and yet a man that could understand and respect a culture's art, history, and beliefs. I personally believe Thrawn was trying to help strengthen the Galaxy for the Yuuzhan Vong, albeit under his rule.
If someone like thrawn was emperor you know that the rebellion wouldn't have formed. He was be pragmatic enough not to put the boot as hard, open enough to tell the population why, and respectful enough to keep the more vocal dissents from going full on rebel.
I can't explain just how happy I am that you used legends rather than Cannon. Thank you so much...
Same here.
Thrawn's canon legacy has only just begun.... if we know his fate after Rebels season 4's finale.
SK Au Yeong doesnt matter. The thrawn introduced in rebels is just ridiculously inferior to the legends version
There is hope, he was mentioned in the Mandalorian so it is possible that he may not have been idle after his disappearance in season 4 of rebels
I recommend you all read the Thrawn Canon Novels.
Excellently done dossier on Grand Admiral Thrawn. But then, I’ve come to expect that from the Templin Institute.
A dossier on Warhammer 40K’s Emperor of Mankind would be very interesting. Halo’s Master Chief, Dune’s Paul Atreides, G1 Optimus Prime, DC’s Darkseid, and Lara Croft might also be good subjects.
Super Ginrai Colonel Usarker Creed for 40k
God Emperor and Paul Atreides for sure.
omg if they do the 40k Emperor of Mankind it would be so awesome
Oh, this is good, very good.
Kind of makes you wish he could have pulled it off.
Now that, would be a story.
i have to admit
the artwork presented was truly masterful
Love Thrawn as a character and you guys did a great job with this video! I'd be interested to see a Dossier on Casval Rem Deikun/ Char Aznable, provided other people would be into that. Awesome video!
Have been reading and listening to the novel Thrawn, detailing his early imperial career. It is a most interesting read, he is portrayed as a Sherlock Holmes within the imperial navy. Always calm, always observing, analyzing and utterly ignorant of social conventions. He is often viewed as heartless despite his efforts to minimize civilian causalities and convince his opponents to surrender. Whilst another protagonist in the story, Arihna Pryce, is a clearer example of someone ambitious and utterly cold blooded.
Superior intellect breeds superior ambitions. He probably just wanted to be emperor more than he was an ideologue. Pragmatists tend to not be overly ideological, so I'd bet that he was more of an opportunist than die-hard.
1:22 A valiant effort to pronounce my full name. It is rather difficult for humans who have had no experience with the language.
This was a well-thought summary of my many exploits. By analyzing and exploiting the psychological weaknesses found in my opponents and combine it with information from sources, I accomplish what appears to be the impossible. It is a strategy that lead many copy from.
I'd like to see videos on the battletech universe. Theres a goldmine of content that I rarely if ever see in channels like this.
I've watched everyone of your guys amazing videos but this has to be my favorite!! Great job!
Thrawn: *Makes brilliant tactics and strategies from observing an entire species culture through their art*

@@michaelandreipalon359 Hey, never hurts to try lol
Thrawn ladies and gentlemen the Hannibal of Star Wars. I am glad that my favorite star wars character was given a video by you guys. Keep up the good work.
If Star Trek B-canon is acceptable, a Dossier on Captain Mackenzie Calhoun would be awesome.
This, this is what the first order should have been a dark parody of the rebellion
You honor me so with this most epic & impressive tribute.....
He is basically the field marshal rommel the desert fox in ww2
Will an Honor Harrington Dossier ever happen?
Second for Lady Dame Honor Stephanie Alexander-Harrington, Steadholder Harrington, Duchess Harrington, Countess White Haven, Fleet Admiral Harrington (RMN) Fleet Admiral Harrington (GSN) "Dances on Clouds" "The Salamander"
Amazing video on the man who likely saved Star Wars between episodes 6 and 1, and linchpin for almost all of the (successful) Expanded Universe...
Next: Spock Prime, please!
Considering the fact that he's still alive by the time of The Mandalorian, and his role in the old canon, Thrawn is basically Karl Donitz in space, mixed with Alexander the Great and Sherlock Holmes.
If it hasn't already been suggested, perhaps Revan could be next? His(Or her, if you decide to leave it ambiguous and not include the events from TOR) achievements are on the levels of Thrawn, and greater in some respects. He turned a Republic that had been losing a war into a force that forced the Mandalorians back and pushed them to the brink of extinction. An extinction that was prevented by his hand as well. He then turned on that Republic by finding the Star Forge, something which likely happened before his involvement in the Mandalorian Wars, or shortly thereafter. Again, though not at the head of a vast military, he was able to bring the Empire that he had crafted, which was on its way to conquering the Galaxy, down to its knees by assisting in the Destruction of the Star Forge. And later on, (if you include the events from TOR), he was able to unite two warring nations, which had been in a Cold War against each other for years, against him because they feared his power and because of what he had accomplished.
Outbound Flight and Survivor's Quest are underrated books.
I would have gladly served under his leadership. The man was beyond brilliant.
Great video. A fantastic exploration of Thrawn and his legacy.
Fantastic video, little disappointed I didn't find your channel earlier.
7:31connect esoteric and obscure bits of data together into a much larger picture
If Thrawn leads, I will follow!
A video on Varian Wrynn, King of Stormwind and High King of the Alliance, perhaps?
I love this Video.. In the new canon his Goals are very clear. The Chiss knew of the Evils in the galaxy ( Yuuzhan Vong ) IF this is who they go with as the Evils he talks about. When the clone wars where over the Chiss looked at who was still standing the Empire and had a choice to make Team up with them and fight the EVIL or weaken it as to make it a more easy target for the evil so that they could have more time to figure out how best to destroy this evil. Again i still loved the video
I did not notice the LEGENDS tag. :) but still i LOVED this video
RIP Thrawn you were betrayed but you will be avenged and we will reform the empire in your name
"i studied the art of war, work to perfect it"
You guys should really do the *United Federation of Nations* from code geass. ^_^
or at least the Black Knights or Britannia Empire
Well put together video
I would gladly serve under Grand Admiral Thrawn. Not to mention probably present him some art pieces to get a opinion of.
It would be great to see a video about the Chiss Ascendancy.
Best Character in all Star Wars
We need a Thrawn series
Pidge form Voltron: Legendary Defender would be an interesting character to have on Dossier!
In Legends Thrawn outsmarts and outmatches the entire New Republic with his small fleet ....
In Rebels Thrawn loses to some local rebel bois

I prefer this Legends Thrawn over the Disney Thrawn, can we please get Dossier of Legends Gilad Pellaeon?
Would love to work under him imho!
A Geralt of Rivia Dossier
btw great video
Thrawn sounds like a futuristic Sun Tzu
If Thrawn had been at the battle of Endor the rebellion wouldn't have stood, not in space and not on Endor.
How can a man who served as an admiral within an evil galactic empire be so likable and admirable?
Because unlike the rest of the empire, he alone was competent.
Thrawn, the Erwin Rommel of Star Wars; sure he's fighting for an evil regime but you just can't help pulling for that guy every step of the way hoping he succeeds.
As for recommendations for additional episodes of Dossier: Lady Dame Honor Harrington.
Long Live The Empire.
Me : Grand Admiral Thrawn
Google : Did you mean *God* ?
the Terran Empire From Star Trek!
He was the best admiral in the star wars universe.
Eldrad Ulthruan next! The only psyker greater than the emperor!
What is sad that thrawn overshadows pellaelon who didn't get a spotlight only a lame name drop in rebels, because in the thrawn trilogy they were a perfect duo he learned under thrawn and even came up with strategies thrawn didn't think off and also had concerns about thrawns tactics that turned out to be fatal like the highly unstable jedi clone cbaoth.
I have subscribed a while ago and I love every one of the videos I've seen so far. I would love it if you did a dossier on 343 Guilty Spark (if you haven't already. I'm still binging your videos.). Not many people know who he was before that name was given to him. I think it is interesting.
Amazing, loved it
I'd love to see a what if for Thrawn winning
Hope they do a stand alone film about him
I do not require glory, only results for my Emperor
WE COULDA HAD THREE MOVIES ABOUT THIS MAN BUT LOOK WHAT WE GOT!!!!
OH THE HUMANITY
SIX STAR DESTROYERS AND A DREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEAM
A subject for a new episode of Dossier, is General RAAM from Gears Of War.
1:27 Grand Admiral :D
This was a excellent video. In the next dossier could you do James Raynor from Starcraft
I don't think being in the Unknown Regions saved Thrawn from sharing the Emperor's fate. Had Thrawn been at Endor the Rebels would not have won. Thrawn would have known about the Ewoks, for example, and they would never have caught him off guard. Ironically the Empire could have won at Endor, and the Emperor still have been killed as they are largely separate events.
A true hero.
New republic grand Admiral thrawn
But he couldn't see the death blow aboard his own bridge... tragic.
A tribute to a great man:'( you have truly onered his mamery
5 dislikes from the surviving Ghost crew members
Love this
The Brotherhood of Steel Fallout
As flawed as the Disney canon is they have done Thrawn justice
So, Napoleon in space.
They did Thrawn dirty in Legends and don't even recognize him in canon. :(
You need to do Organization XIII from kingdom hearts
He can outmaneuver the egos and ambitions of an entire galaxy but misses a knife to the chest. SMH

If there is one man worthy to claim the emperor's throne after Palpatine and Vader died, it is Thrawn.
iono, i could be mistaken... but he wasn't aiming for emperor? I'm pretty sure he had concerns and actually disliked MANY things the Empire was doing, but his logic dictated that they had purpose as well as capability. when you also bring in the fact that he was semi protecting his species and culture, you can almost think of him as a loyal but rogue knight. even once his lord had fallen, he still stood for his oath and purpose.
@@vissermatt1058 noticed he said worthy.
I could see Thrawn changing the Empire to allow non humans in the ranks. Seeing as the Empire was a tool to keep the galaxy together similar to Tito in the former Yugoslavia.
"a grand plan to prepare the galaxy for the Yuuzhan Vong?"
"the safeguarding of his people?"
"or just another opertunistic warlord?"
Me- why not all of the above?
I would serve the empire only under grand admiral thrawn thumbs up if you agree!
AL Elder Hail Grand Admiral Thrawn. True heir to the Empire.
I hate the Empire, but if Thrawn led it, I'd follow him.
ALL HAIL EMPEROR THRAWN
FOR THE EMPIRE!
He’s a jerk, I saw him steal some kids finger painting!!
Thrawn is the Caesar of Star Wars, he was a great tactician, but was later liked by an former ally
Agreed, probs the only person in Legends Timeline who could've rebuilt the Empire to its FULL Glory
@@aeigdiusflaviusquintus1337 it would have reached new heights under thrawn the failing of palpatine and the sith would have been washed away
I am going to assume your autocorrect changed killed to liked.
Nah nah nah. Caesar got a decent start.
THRAWN WAS AURALIANVS BVT BLVE. Even stabbed while campaigning in his HQ...
Maybe like Napoleon or Alexander the great
Let me get this straight... The Rebellion spends years performing hit-and-run attacks on the Empire keeping them off balance slowly gaining strength until the Empire fell, and then Thrawn takes his 6 Star Destroyers and performing hit-and-run attacks on the Republic keeping them off balance and gaining more strength. Huh, good ol' Thrawn giving the enemy a taste of their own medicine.
And with the stab to the chest, Nelson much? Except Nelson won in the end, but he died.
Problem was the creators of Thrawn realized they literally made a true anti-hero who despite worked for the Empire was a respectable, well popular and extremely efficient officer who actually was a shining example of what the Empire promoted it was supposed to be.
Thrawn was intelligent, respectful, a real soldier and officer, he was SW Rommell and literally by his own hand nearly defeated utterly the New Republic by strategy and cunning. If he took control he likely would have been loved by both Imperial citizens and the newly re-absorbed new republic citizens. That's why the writers offed him or terminated his character shield. He became too powerful of a character that he threatened Jedi and Sith Characters who were supposed to be near demi-gods and here a Imperial officer who was near human with no Force powers was curb-stomping everyone and he had less resources to work with.
Those 6 ISD's weren't the only vessels available to Thrawn.
In the novel "Dark Force Rising", Thrawn come's into possession of the Katana fleet. Which consist of 200 pre-Clone wars Dreadnought's, whose exact position had remained unknown until then. The New Republic managed to capture 15 of those ships, but Thrawn has already escaped with the rest.
But he's already at war with the New Republic, so how will he find enough crew member's to man all these ships?
The answer: Emperor Palpatine's underground cloning facility on the planet of Wayland.
@@Quetzalcoatl_Feathered_Serpent Timothy Zahn is the sole writer of Thrawn's legacy, not counting beta readers and grammar checkers. He did acknowledge that Thrawn had grown too powerful in the context of the story, especially considering his only weakness has always been politics. So him dying was the only way they could stop him from steam rolling the entire New Republic, and becoming the new head honcho of the franchise.
The Rebels were designed with fighting large enemy armies in mind, they were not designed to fight hit-and-run foes. Thrawn was a genius in that regard.
@@electricfeverx976 damn even the author is afraid of him. Imagine how stable the Empire would be if he knows politics also.
Grand Admiral Thrawn, the most badass Commander of the empire.
THIS is my Thrawn...
If the Empire was led by Thrawn from the get-go, I'll have troubles trying to decide who would I cheer for.
Most likly the rebelion wouldbt happen at all, cause thrawn isnt a tyrant
If the Empire had been led by Thrawn from the get-go, he would have destroyed the rebellion before it ever really got started! Imagine if he had been force sensitive?
If Thrawn led the Empire racism would have almost disappeared given Thrawn himself is a near human alien. He probably would have it as a authoritarian government perhaps similar to the GTU, if anything that's exactly the type of government he would approve of. Rebellions would be more difficult to rise up if people are comfortable and safe with a future to look forward to even if the government they are in is a little strict but not a overbearing monster. Any Rebellion that did rise up likely would have been crushed long before becoming a major threat and Thrawn likely would have used less violent means to subduing a rebellion if possible knowing violent action could create more. Education likely would be valued especially so. I can Imagine Thrawn pushing the arts and promotion of better work enviorments :P
@@Sealhunt If he where force sensitive, that would be an obstacle for him. The Force is never neutral. It allways trys to tip to one side. As a Sith, Thrawn would be to brutal to be a good tactican. As a Jedi, he would care to much for his troops.
The only mistake he made was, that he didn´t gave the Noghri the means to rebuild there planet. If he would have done that - maybe by telling them, that this new gear is better - they would have never betrayed him. Even if Laia landed there as she did, they would have stayed loyal since Tharwn gave them the means to rebuild there planet. I never understood why he did not do that.
Had Thrawn run the Empire from the start, the rebellion won’t even be necessary.
Now this is something I’ve been waiting for for a long... long time.
Was it artfully done?
Wait, are you legends Thrawn or Canon Thrawn?
Pyroskies I prefer to represent both.
Thrawn is one of those great fictional characters that doesn't just feel like a compelling real person, but stands as an avatar of some philosophy and ideal which truly sets the mind awander. I look forward to what else the Templin Institute makes videos on
10th man rule Israel
@@Lukeclout What
@@DogeickBateman It’s a doctrine. Always consider alternative narratives, options and methodologies. It’s what effective people(like Thrawn) in real life does.
@@Lukeclout Ah now I know what you're talking about. Heard it was devised in response to the 1973 War after intelligence failed on that one.
@@DogeickBateman It was. In real life to achieve military success akin to that of Thrawn, it’s not usually just 1 smart person/leader. But a group of dynamic leaders operating in a disciplined yet highly flexible team. Israeli intelligence / IDF did pioneer such methodologies.
I remember reading the Thrawn trilogy a few years back and loving it. Thrawn was a great antagonist that more recent stories have had a hard time living up to.
What I think is unique about Thrawn though is that while Star Wars, both legends and new canon, is rampant with threat escalation (The Empire had a moon sized planet killer? Well now the First Order has a Planet sized system destroyer!), Thrawn was in many ways a de-escalation. He didn't have any special superweapons or a giant fleet from nowhere, and was in many ways a dark mirror of the Rebellion, resource deprived and fighting a far larger opponent, but making up for his shortcomings with better strategies and daring plans.
Hopefully they can bring some of that back in the new canon. That Timothy Zhan has been given back control of Thrawn gives me hope, but beyond that I hope that Star Wars in general moves down a path that doesn't try to copy the past, only bigger, but instead focuses on compelling characters with well-explained motivations.
Sadly that's not the path canon is going down.
Canon Thrawn is amazing
I think he is more closely analogous to Hannibal. Both were genius commander who were ultimately fighting for the losing side and dying empires, but were still able to achieve crushing victories against numerically superior opponents, while still losing the war.
Or more like Napoleon. Someone rising against all odds out of left field, in a time where the ancien regime has been crushed, to reestablish a new one.
Well said! Thrawn is the single best Star Wars character, and very high on the list of best characters of all time.
The enemy to brilliant and complex to be in a Disney movie
Travis Wald now being replaced by total knucklehead and incompetent wannabe known as first order 😂😂
To be fair they did put him in star wars rebels and he was pretty damn good
@@mezarisage6055 still humiliated by a brat
Wouldn't it be great that instead of force hologram Luke it was Thrawn and his imperial faction who came and aided the Resistance at Crait? And the last shot would be the remaining Resistance looking through a window aboard a stardestroyer, their fate still unknown kinda like the ending of ESB.
@@mezarisage6055 read the novels, he wasn't a joke or a stone cold killer in that. Hell the dude even forgave, and got some cadets who ambushed and tried to assault him a promotion without them knowing it was him. He wasn't the kind of guy who would bombard a city or blow up a civilian to make a point, he was a honourable and fair warrior who only killed with purpose, and avoided bloodshed when possible.
Thanks for this great video.
Grandadmiral Mitth'raw'nuruodo you deserved it sir *salutes*
How does this channel only have 81k subscribers
The quality is top notch
81k is pretty good for a 5 month-old.
They've grown really fast. A few months ago the channel didn't even exist. I remember subbing right after the channel was created and had less than 1000 subs.
Yeah, they’re only a few months old, but are growing quite rapidly. Lore channels have started to take off. Spacedock, Eckhart’s Ladder, Lore Reloaded, Star Wars Explained- there’s proven to be a massive audience for them. We’re at a point in fandom history where the information is as prevalant as it is readily accessible, and these videos are perfect for both introducing people to a series (when my mother began looking into Stranger Things, the first thing I did was show her the Institute’s video on Hawkins Nat’l Laborotory), and for brushing up, either because the franchise you like is making new content, or maybe just to keep your memory freshed.
Besides, if you wish to see the channel grow, what better way to promote stuff you like than through word of mouth. Tell your friends and family who you figure would be interested IRL, on Twitter/Facebook, on forums and Discord, or whatever other means you deem fit.
Thats why we must help it grow.
