Actually i found one that is very similar to this in combat but it's a strategy/RPG game with all kinds of nice player upgrades, ship upgrades, pirate base, exploration, trading, building a fleet, capturing enemy vessels, selling ships, taking over towns. It's got it all. Oh yeah and it is free to play on mobile. Sry if that bursts your bubble, but there are some rare gems on mobile too and this is one of them. It's got a nice simple story, but it is mainly a sandbox in which you navigate around the Caribbean islands, visit ports, trade cargo, find tips on ships to plunder, work as a privateer for whatever empire you want, transport passengers, buy ships, steal ships, navigate the opean seas, find ship wrecks, treasure maps, anything you like.
It's called The Pirate: Caribbean Hunt. It's a nice single player adventure and it has no loot boxes either, just a store where you can buy some random stuff just to support the devs. I frankly didn't feel the need to buy anything as the game's economy is very well balanced and you can survive damn well from trading, sacking or exploring. I just bought a 5 bucks pack to support the devs cuz i liked it so much.

As much as I liked Pirates (I used to play it on the Mega Drive!) ...Pillars of Eternity Deadfire is the best Pirate themed game I've ever played.

I bought the game, did the tutorials, started my game and immediately didn't unpause for the next few hours. All of that time was me setting up my trade routes and building my city with the funds I had. I enjoyed every second of it

@@EgnachHelton to be fair, the original Port Royale and Port Royale 2 didnt have slaves in the game - but the games were close to masterpieces without it regardless. These new itterations suffer from a different problem: for the sake of try to appeal for a wider audience their removed EVERYTHING made a Port Royale game a Port Royale game. No economy (in a economy-naval warfare sandbox game!), the combat is trash since 3, making money is became a trivial thing and even city management itself became a joke by now...
This is what happen, when you try to appeal for the normies - you get a farmville with carribean skin,, because this game is nothing more than that. A glorified farmville, all of the once great titles are degrading into cashgrap mobile game levels - and im especially disgusted for whats happened with this game, Port Royale 2 was MY childhood, that was the game set my on to understand how economy work in general and in the end made so much impact on me to the point where i became an Accountant... I hope every single developer having anything to do with Port Royale 3 and 4 will have a very long "struggle season" in Hell (or whatever place you believe in).

This series is practically an auto purchase for me ...then I saw what they did to the combat!
I was really thinking about giving Mafia a miss after watching the IGN review as I saw they replaced all of the people with new faces and voices. I loved the mob, i worked for Mr Salieri and he did not look or sound like the guy in the remake! I just don't want new memories of these characters, they did not require replacing nor did their voices. I will have a think about it tomorrow when am out and about.
Please consider it Mack. I play the original about every two years and I am really interested to hear your opinion.

To be fair, 2 & 3 never had slaves either (never played 1). I never really thought about it until you mentioned it. Just roleplay it and assume the plantations have slaves. The sailors that you transport are for other, better jobs and also used as soldiers.
They need to do a reimagining of Sid Meier's Pirates!

They probably don't have the slave trade because of their target age rating. I don't know how that would effect the age rating of a game but I would imagine it would be at the very least substantial.

They actually scrubbed slaves from the game and made them "free sailors" - If they remove history then we'll forget it.
Maybe we're the new slaves. No, we're certainly the modern form of slave and we're not important enough to get to know history.
If you want to play the pinnacle of these kinds of games, get The Patrician III (made by this same company but in a different era). It is a masterpiece and has a very nice dynamic simulation where what you do in the game affects the cities you trade with. Also in patrician 3 (and all of the earlier port royale games to be honest) you get to manually control the ships and tell them what to buy where and there is a lot of decision making to do. (Btw skip patrician 4, they really dumbed it down. All their games get progressively stupider as time goes on).

The hours I've spent playing Port Royale 2... Man... Actually I wish I could play it again - I bought it on GOG but I haven't found a fix for the flickering water glitch.

@@luobomu9747 Right click on the .exe file, change the compatibility with Windows Xp service pack 3. Go in the installation folder, double click on PR2Config and flag "Compatibility" mode for reflection

He's not doing that review, as far as I know. Since he didn't get a key. But more importantly he doesn't want to taint the good memories he has from playing the original game. Mack has seen scenes from the remake and he just didn't like it (in comparison to the original game)
He’s not doing a review. He said because they’ve changed the script/voices etc he doesn’t want the memories of the old mafia changes. Said it on Twitter and on stream.
If mac did a review on it he would lose his shit and need another bell. Its a dumbed down shallow remake.

the original PR games (1 and 2) were amazing in their time. They had their flaws, but still good. PR 3 came and it didn't find a place with the old fans or much new fans. Pr4 comes out and improves on that recipe.
PR 4 aimed low and fell short of that as well. Vomit bucket.
As a veteran of the port royale series, previous port royale games were better than this. The ship combat used to be real time and you had around 4 different shots to cycle through from the start of the game. you had to load up on shot at ports, you could romance the daughter of the mayor at different ports. You also had factions where you will be bombarded by an enemy faction constantly as well as pirates. you had to also manually sell at ports. a fun thing to do was to board ships, loot them of their stock and sell them at the ports that give you more for them. Port Royale 4 is a shadow of its former glory

Port Royale 1 & Port Royale 2 were a lot of fun. But the developers ruined it after that. *@Worth A Buy* the first two games were worth the effort. You could actually control your captain and have a sword fight with the enemy captain to capture them for bounty. Sea battles were in real-time but could be paused and you had to use tactics when you were outnumbered. There were three different options when firing. One to damage and sink the ship, another to disable the ship so it could be boarded and seized and a final option to kill enemy sailors to make boarding easier and resulting in fewer casualties. Also building business and warehouses and managing trade was a lot more fun. You could marry a Governor's daughter profit from a political alliance with a particular colony. Definitely _Worth A Look._

this is not a game for modern gamers like fast and shoot and shits like that, is a game of trading and tactics, growing slow and build businesis, organising stuff etc, is not for anyone but i can say is a beatifull game and extremly rare in his type of game.
Since 1504-1507 in the Spanish Empire slavery was only legal for criminals and the territories were not colonies but viceroyalties, not the same.

They took a good game concept and made it Braveheart or something. You also sail only within the Caribbean and slave trade was trans Atlantic, so no slave traffic here.

Why couldn't they just call the slaves workers? I know that they were slaves but they were also working and just because you're working doesn't necessarily imply that you're enslaved.
If you had to pay a fee to acquire new workers for your plantation I think that would be a good way to avoid the "racist" label well not breaking the lore to much.

Long time Port Royale fan here, can confirm that a lot of this game feels simplified. The trading seriously needs more depth. Everything else feels okay. I haven’t wasted time on my battles.
Main missing things... detailed control of trade systems / warehouses and acknowledgment of the slave trade. It seems cheap and tacky that the sailors are really just slaves that have been rebranded 🤦♂️
And no multiplayer. I believe it was Port Royale 2 where had many hours on multiplayer at the weekend lan party.

the Spanish and the Hispanic Empire never traded slaves , in fact the empire tried to ban the slave trade because of strict laws on who and what was allowed into the empire! the english forced slaves on the Hispanic Empire as a clause of the "Treaty of ultrecht" that forced the allowing of english companies to sell slaves throughout the empire on top of dishonorably and forcefully taking Gibraltar

In previous games I starve the towns of bricks and wood and stockpile in my warehouse so only I can build new residences.

Try playing PR2. Where as PR1 is basically a role playing choose your own adventure with a story line, PR3 is to overwhelming for me.
The battle system in 4 looks attrocious, I'd like to see a land battle in PR4.

Port Royale 1 is probably the best but I need an older pc to play. These are all great educational games for young kids in computer class at school. Only upside I see in #4 is better map detail and accurate history details.

So they released a game into Early Access called 'Medieval Dynasty' a week or so ago. You play - as the title suggest - as the head of a medieval family. Guess what? You can only play as a man - who would have figured? You should see some of the forum threads. It's ridiculous.
I'm kind of torn on the slavery thing in this case though. It tries to be a light-hearted game. By Macks argumentation, you must have 6 million dead Jewish people in every WW2 game - wich I think is kind of dumb. These are entertainment products. While I do like 'heavier' stuff once in a while - like This War of Mine, it is not for every evening. I mean, even in Victoria or Crusader Kings, arguably 2 of the most accurate historical game series, you generally don't have these topics as a prominent feature. Plenty of Jews got murdered in these times. Not to talk about burning people just because their neighbor didn't like them or cutting off hands for stealing and such.

It’s not historically accurate. It’s anachronistic. Only Spain had colonies in the Caribbean during the 16th century. The other European powers started establishing colonies from the 17th century onwards. Spain’s flag is also anachronistic. Same with the types of ships. There were no ships of the line in the 16th and early 17th century. Port Royale would work better if it was set around the years 1670-1720, which also coincides with piracy’s golden age.
this game is going to be wildly popular. People don't enjoy playing games anymore they just want to make a few random decisions and then see the rest play out while they eat McDonalds. See also: Mobile games and the rise in popularity of auto battlers.

Errr, I dont know of really any strategy titles short of Kenshi that make a thing of slavery... Im not sure its a legitimate knock against this game.
The Campaign mode is just a continuation of the tutorial, much like with the Anno games. The Freeplay mode is the actual game.
This game about trade airbrushed the slave trade out of the game, but they left all the items produced by that slave trade in the game...how virtuous.
