  • Today we have a deep look into Port Royale 4 compare it with Port Royale 2 and see if it's good and why I spent 100 hours playing it, while it getting mixed reviews. Beyond being a review we also analyse some economy gameplay elements of the game.
The Developers also announced potential changes of patch 1.3 for Port Royale 4, which were posted yesterday (16. November 2020). Some of my suggestions are in it, even though i did not know at the time of voice recording. You can find it here:

    ► Update 1 (20.11.2020)
The Developers just released Patch 1.3 and it addresses a lot of my criticisms. They even added the Tavern with the gambling mini-game back to the game and new fields for combat as I suggested, here are the detailed patch notes:

Yes doing well. I hope you are doing well too! Difficult times for many people, but I feel blessed. Channel is doing super well, even though I haven't uploaded much. A lot of work is going on in the background and time is passing by so fast. Can't believe it's already mid November.
Yes you are right. That's what I do I guess. I pick a topic and cover it in a lot of detail, sometimes I get lost 😅

After a long time another review. I don't expect much interest for this one, but I wanted to make it. So here it is. I hope some people will enjoy it or find it useful :)
Have you played port Royale 4? How did you like it?

Port Royale 4 the only comment section where yo can write about port royale 1 and people actually know the game, I love it! Hope it´s like it, but it doesen´t seem to :/

haha yes ^^ Yes there are sadly differences. But I would say the core game is mostly still intact. Turn based combat is probably the biggest change for a lot of people (and some features missing). The Port Roayle 4 devs announced the possibility to declare independence for Patch 1.3, which imo would be an interesting feature.

If this game had a real time naval battles and city battles, it would revolutionise a lot of things in these series we all loved in the past!!!
It would even stand shoulder to shoulder with Empire Total War!!!
It is very sad having those beautiful Ship models and having them battle in a Mobile Androidy turn based way... 😟
This is very sad. All this work for nothing, looking them from a distance like chess!
If Port Royale 5 comes out with these features, I would pre-order , that's for sure!!!
But 4? If nothing of this changes in the future, even if it drops to 5$, I won't buy it!

Informative. Convinced me to buy it. I like the city building and prefer the more complex TB combat.

Happy you enjoyed the video and potentially want to get the game. The recent patch addressed some of my criticisms. They added those special fields in combat (shallow waters, maelstroms/whirlpools, etc), you can declare your independence now and even the card Minigame is back. Sadly I had no time testing it out yet (busy months). But the current patch looks good.
I hope you have fun with the game and enjoy it! :)

IDK why often overcomplicating gameplay like in 18:50 gets hidden as "new feature" while it just kills the purpose, and the turn system UHG! i still have my childhood saves from PR2 and more recent PR3 i guess ill stick to those

I agree on the difficulties issue but there is no detailed instructions for all aspects of the Port Royals game. I would like to know how to get military ships in the campaign mode especially when the Viceroy tasks you to eliminate a privateer or pirate. Merchant ships do not have cannons. If you can suggest how to obtain the military ships in campaign mode, I would be appreciative. Abby i

      I hope this helps ^^
There are multiple ways to get military ships:
      1) You can check bigger harbours with a normal shipyard or bigger (not the repair docks though) and those sell ships. If you are lucky they offer one. Shipyards can sell military ships, but that is not always the case. Maybe check the Viceroys' cities (the one with the crown), I feel it is more likely there.
      2) If you want your own nation's military ships: go to the Viceroy menu and click on Concessions. There you have to spent your (hard earned) fame points to unlock your nation's military vessels (you have to follow the unlock path). The biggest military ship of each nation always needs one fame point (or two if you took the merchant) to build (so you pay fame points one time to unlock and every time you build one).
With the licence/concession you can then built them at any large shipyard (click on the building) of your own nation including your own large shipyard (it must be a large one though; the normal shipyard can't build ships), but those nation specific ships you can't build at shipyards of other nations.
If you want to build large shipyards you require a concession too (Viceroy menu -> unlock with fame points) and you have to fulfil a population requirement (6000 inhabitants) to actually build it.
There are also ("neutral") military ships (the Frigate, which has a pretty good ability and the Corvette) which you can built without a concession at any large shipyard on the map (I assume you should not be at war with the nation that owns it). You don't even need a ship near by, just click on a shipyard somewhere on the map and check the order menu -> select the ship you want -> and then click on the "Order" button . Ships ofc need materials and gold to build, if those are missing, it won't built.
And you need a captain assigned to any convoy with a military ship in it, else it can't move. You don't need crew to move though, but you should have around maximum crew if you expect combat, else your ships will get instantly boarded by enemy ships. But keep in mind that crew is expensive. Btw. ships in light houses don't cost gold. So you can store them there, when you don't need them. War is really expansive.
Also if you want to get the other nations' ships, you can build a shipwright. A town you control (you have administration rights for) with a shipwright & a large shipyard learns to build the ship types of all ships docking at it. So if you board enemy ships, you can dock them and then your large shipyard can build them too. Or if ships of other nations dock at you harbour for what ever reason (trade convoy), you learn them too. This can be useful. The Dutch have the Trading Fluyt (not a military ship though), which is a pretty good trading ship (but they only have one nation specific military ship as the result; which is the big one and costs fame to built every time). Learning to build the e.g. Military Frigate (small military ship of England) is also pretty useful, because its ability is really strong.
      3) If you have you already some military ships, you can go into the "pirate mode" (or simply fight ships of a faction you are in war with) and attack a random military convoy on the map. If you win, you can chose to integrate all the ships you have boarded in battle into your fleet/convoy (alternately you can sink them). To board ships, you need crew on your ships though (max amount is best, but expansive). A canister shot attack reduces crew on the target ship heavily compared to a normal shot.
You can go beyond the limit of your captain, but there is a maximum amount of ships possible in one convoy. If you go beyond the limit of your captain (command points), you can't leave the next harbour you dock at. Also careful: your crew is split between all ships (including the boarded ones), so your boarding power is reduced by that, because instead of splitting 1000 crew on 5 ships, they will now be split on 6 or more ships and though you can dock, you can't move from the harbour again until you reduce the number of ships fitting your captain's command points. So if you want the additional fire power of having more ships that would be possible by command points, you can't dock and get more crew. But you can prioritize ships to have max crew and the remaining crew (after those are at max crew if possible) will be split on the remaining ships. This helps a lot.
Have fun :) If you have more questions feel free to ask ^^
