- god i love making character analysis videos
so i played rain code somewhat recently, after looking forward to it before its release and then immediately forgetting about it for several months before later going "oh yeah, i should go play that now" so i went and played it
loved it. lots of fun, ruined me emotionally, and now makoto will NOT leave my brain he's just spinning around in there
expect more videos on rain code characters, i for sure plan on making an analysis for each of the main cast and probably also some side characters

Makoto is genuinely one of if not the most interesting and compelling character Kazutaka Kodaka has ever written and I'm willing to die on this hill. He steals every scene he's in (which is a huge achievement with how over the top *every* character is in Rain Code), and it's a great ride watching him go from being the weird little gremlin who talks about bathing fully clothed during his introduction to the deeply sympathetic man who's on the verge of a breakdown from three years of burning the candle at both ends to keep everyone in Kanai Ward safe that he is in chapter 5. My only real complaint about his character is that Yuma didn't give him a hug at the end of their showdown in the mystery labyrinth, he deserved one.

This is so cool!! It’s exciting to see video essay content start to get made for Rain Code, especially about one of my favorite characters! This was a really good analysis of Makoto’s character too you made me remember how cool and interesting he is. Well I mean I already knew but you know. Now I’m thinking about him again. I’m looking forward to seeing any other Rain Code content you make :D

14:17 just a theory but in makoto's profile his likes are "raw ham" which foreshadowed the whole human meat thing meaning that he probably also had to consume it
not a bad theory! i generally don't take the likes/dislikes into account much when looking at characters, though makoto's likes do foreshadow his connection to yuma ("peace and happiness for everyone"). i also usually interpret him being a "perfect homunculus" to mean he doesn't experience the same "flaws" as kanai ward's homunculi--need to consume human meat, severe allergy to sunlight, losing intelligence after death. it also would be odd to list raw ham as a "like" considering that if he did have to consume human meat, he probably would have hated it based on his guilt over his actions.

I've been waiting for someone to do some sort of analysis of the game I adored from the very start and one of my favorite characters???? YES. CHEFS KISS.
I thoroughly enjoyed listening to your analysis, mainly because it's extremely well made, but also because it resonates with me personally. (Makoto was the first fictional character to make me cry in a LONG time.)

This is an amazing video for an amazing character. Man, I love Makoto and felt so bad for him by the end. He put everything on his own shoulders even though it was such a major burden that was probably too much for him alone. He knew he was the only one with the experiences to care about the situation in the way he does. He tried his best and was selfless to the end and for the most part it paid off because that made him wothy of the resident's trust.
I also love how silly he acts when talking to Yuma. He messes with him so much, casually dropping hints he knows Yuma wouldn't get yet or making comments about Yuma's face or whether Yuma likes his masks as if he's testing how different they are from eachother. I mean if you had the chance to meet another version of you it would make sense you wouldn't give up the opportunity to mess with them.
About his last name I was looking up the god he's named after a while ago and I think it said something about normal people not being able to look at his face which is something Makoto says himself in his introduction so that might be the connection. I feel like Makoto might have named himself that way because he thought it sounded badass too. I doubt the UG lab gave him an actual name tbh.
i'm glad you enjoyed!! also, that's an interesting bit about his last name! i didn't discover that in my own research, so thank you for telling me. and i agree the UG lab probably didn't give him a name themselves--it's pretty clear they don't view the homunculi as people, and thus wouldn't see the point of giving makoto a name.
and i love how silly he is too!! it's one of his traits that made me really like him. i love silly little guys and goofy characters lol
Makoto spelled strangely is an obscured or obfuscated "truth". Cute.
really great read!!! i love rain code so much, such a heartfelt narrative and characters!! one thing i personally wish it had was yuma embracing makoto with a hug at the end and telling him how he shouldn't have to shoulder all this alone. or least a bonus cutscene in the epilogue showing him and yuma working together. their relationship was literally so impactful to the story
god i would have loved that so much. their dynamic is incredible because theyre so clearly opposed and yet share so many beliefs since theyre, yknow, almost kinda the same person in a way. honestly i think makoto needs a hug in general but yeah!! huge agree, i love this game!
