  • it's time for a close look at yakou furio, one of the most important characters in rain code! he's the chief of the nocturnal detective agency and the character who caused me the greatest emotional agony! if you, like me, were utterly devastated by chapter 4, then come right along and see how much i've got to say about this guy!

CHEERING !!!!!! I love yakou man. I especially love how he's present in the other detective's DLCs [apart from Fubuki :((]. Halara's and Vivia's are literally so sweet 😭

i love him too!! i really really wish he was involved in fubuki's so we could see the bond he shares with her, but it's still nice to see him with the other detectives!

fun fact: the Yomi phantom design actually resembles Yakou and his wife, (the demonic side being Yakou and the angelic side being his wife) implying that it's actually Yakou's phantom and he was hiding behind the image of Yomi, that phantom then melted away to reveal Yakou. i wanna believe this was caused by Yuma's hesitation that was also making the labyrinth harder to solve, Yuma subconsciously hiding the truth behind the scary mask of the twisted Yomi so he doesn't have to face his mentor, but the labyrinth still hinting at Yakou and his motivation through the denial. Yomi's labyrinth counterpart never actually becomes a phantom when he does show up for real
another fun fact: Vivia _doesn't_ have a phantom despite clearly seriously wanting the case to stay unsolved, which makes me curious about if the labyrinth won't produce phantoms for people who are already there to stand their ground themselves

that's very interesting! i personally don't see any resemblance between yomi's mystery phantom and either yakou or his wife. i see the phantom design as more tied to yomi's two-faced nature--how he positions himself as the highest authority of justice and the one who protects the city despite being an absolutely terrible person. plus, yomi would have had a reason to not want the case solved because of his own involvement in it.
as for yomi's labyrinth counterpart not becoming a phantom, i would assume that's because the main mystery was already over. dr. huesca's murder was solved, and yakou's soul had already been reaped. shinigami mentions early on that mystery phantoms represent people in the real world trying to hide the truth of the case the labyrinth centers around, so it's possible yomi's labyrinth counterpart doesn't appear as a phantom because there's simply no truths left to hide. yuma, vivia, and shinigami have already figured everything out. it's also possible the glitchy, obscured figure he appears as before is, in a way, a sort of mystery phantom, although the game itself doesn't really give us any information about that.
and the point about vivia having no mystery phantom makes perfect sense! no need for the labyrinth to craft a phantom to represent him if he's already right there lol. however, there IS a mystery phantom of makoto in chapter 5 despite him being present in the labyrinth, so that also brings up some questions about exactly how the mystery labyrinths function.

@@onecargoshort the resemblance is in the hair, the demon side has an exagerated version of Yakou's floof anf the angel side has long straight hair in a similar style to his wife's, neither side actually looks like Yomi.
also the comment about Yomi not becoming a phantom was mostly me pointing out he himself never actually showed up for the case because he didn't give a shit if they solved it or not, he was going to kill them regardless, so he had no reason for a phantom of him to ever actually spawn
I think i'd also chalk the inconsistancy in Vivia and Makoto's phantoms as a plothole, it's not the first random unspoken rule that got broken (the first was Yuma and Shini suggesting bringing items into the Labyrinth wasn't supposed to happen when Vivia took out a book, while they didn't bat an eye at Desuhiko's pens)

@@thelemoncoffee good points, and very interesting! i still personally think the mystery phantom is a representation of yomi, because the two-sided symbolism ties in pretty well with his overall character (the hairstyles can still be representative of this, with the demon's side being disorderly because of his evil nature, and the angel's side being straight and elegant to match his projected image), and it would also be strange to me if yomi, THE big bad of the peacekeepers, never had a mystery phantom lol
i imagine yomi mostly didn't show up for the case because a large part of it was carried out using vivia's forte, which is completely undetectable to most people. whether or not he was planning to kill them regardless of the case's outcome seems pretty irrelevant--in chapter 2, martina appears as a mystery phantom when she was right about to shoot yuma and desuhiko.
and i don't really want to chalk up the vivia and makoto inconsistency to a plothole since that particular rule of the labyrinth is never explicitly stated. it could also lend more symbolism/detail to makoto's character, since he simultaneously wanted yuma to solve the mystery (since he laid out every piece of evidence he needed) but also wanted the truth of kanai ward to remain hidden.

The one thing I have to say about Yakou is that his special interest is his wife

I'm kidding I do have more to say since Yakou is arguably one of the characters we know the most about, considering he had a whole separate game
One thing: I didn't like him at first, lol. I found his cowardice detrimental and downright annoying, especially considering the efforts of the other master detectives. Now, though? Nervous dad vibes. Lol
I have to mention what I like most about him, and that's probably his tendency to protect (and avenge) those he cares about. While he is undoubtedly a flawed character, I find it sweet:))

@@saywhaaaaat11 that's a point where we differ, then, because i personally never disliked yakou, though i do see how he could come across a little annoying. he's for sure flawed, but that's one of the greatest things about him! he's an extremely good and well-rounded character, i think, and it makes him one of my favorites.
as a side note, and i wish i'd mentioned this in the video, his voice actor did a PHENOMENAL job. kaiji tang's performance of yakou was excellent and it definitely contributed to how much i love the character

@@onecargoshortLol, my dislike was only at the start
By chapter four, I didn't want Yakou to get killed so much that I started looking for proof the Ama-pal guy was the killer
Dude's silly. He grows on a person like moss
