This is an incredible review! You have a lovely voice, a genius script, and my exact taste in humor. It’s clear so much care and attention went into making this and I hope more people get to experience it in the future. You’ve shown unbelievable skill for what seems to be the first video on your channel. If you decide to make more, I’m know they’ll be great!
(Also the subtle ToTK underworld sound effect was a cute touch.)

Great video. The analysis was good and I really liked your humor too. I was shocked to find that you don't have more video's, because you give the impression you have experience with making critiques like this.
Raincode was a huge regression from Danganronpa for me. The carm and atmosphere still make it a worthwhile experience to me and I am glad the Danganronpa team tried something new, even if they made something far worse than their previous titles.

As someone who’s worked with trains before the prologue was so funny. Like just the idea that even a sci-fi train could do that without it being obvious

Also they did successfully gaslight me into thinking the blood was a stylistic thing, but I caught on to the meat buns either being drugs or Soylent green by chapter 1 or 2 I think.

1:08:54 I’ve been assuming that Yuma’s survival wasn’t so much Makoto’s grand plan so much as just a happy accident. Cause yeah the accidental non lethal submarine bomb explanation seems too dumb. That being said with all you’ve brought up I’m not certain anymore.

This is a really good video, and you said a lot of things I was disappointed by (and you were very fair to the game) That said, there were some things you got incorrect, so I just wanna say them just so at least some of the problems were addressed:
-The only person who'd benefit to bring a corpse was Zilch, but since he came to Kanai Ward, he can't get one as there's all quickly disposed of (and would become alive as homunculus)
-the reason swank was so sure the victims burned to death is because he was actively working with Zilch's murder, which is why he was shocked to find out Zilch died
-Desuhiko and Yuma did hold hands back in chapter 2, which is how Yuma was able to disguise. Basically, Yuma had to hold Desuhikos hand as he went in the bag, but once he was out, he can let go

Thank you man, I think this Is the only video that openly talks about the horrendus writting of the game and how it fails to be a detective game, or as I see it, a detective game made for actual children.
I clearly remember the exact moment that i almost dropped the game, if it wasn't for the inmense carisma of the Lets Player who upload it (RanguGamer), on the first case, he had a theory about the culprit tiying the rope to one of the hands of the clock in order to escape, breaking it Om the process and making the suspect go to work, blaming him for the murder, but no, the game doesn't allow you to make your own theories, Is so obvious that i legit was thinking "no, this can be THAT simple, this Is what the game wants me to think" but I greatly overestimated the writting of the game, not even Danganronpa was THAT uninterested on his own writting as this one.
Also, this Is a spanish speaking people problem only, but the translate Is downright stupid and greatly unfinished, Is a minor problem, but even the Lets Player complaint about that and the slow AF gameplay constantly.
Everything packed up in, what I consider, the worst detective game i experienced, the worst work of Kodaka and Spike Chunsoft and one of the greatest disappointments I had as a gamer.
Edit: I checked your channel and realized this Is your first video, you have a great future for your form of analyze things and not sugarcoat them, also being objective and fair to the game, I really want to see what more can you offer, for the moment, you have my like and sub.

Nice video! I'm glad someone mentioned all the details that make no sense in each case, many of those really irked me while watching a playthrough. And you didn't even mention (I think) how unbelievable someone as young as Yuma being number 1, and having been so for years. And even if you assume he's older than he looks (say, late 20s), the game shipping him with Kurumi becomes weird.
Honestly after chapter 3 I stopped trying to make sense of most of it and just went along for the ride, which made it somewhat more enjoyable. Also my favorite chapter was chapter 2, and I didn't think of the possibility of all three girls working together until midway through the labyrinth.Their suspicious dialogue didn't register as them being accomplices at all either. I'm pretty bad at mystery games though.
What are your thoughts on the mainline Danganronpa games? Your brief mention of v3 made me curious.

Danganronpa 1 was enjoyable, it had a tight atmosphere and the novelty of the format. Things were over the top, and the cases were simple, but I distinctly recall having fun with the game. Danganronpa 2 improved the cases and characters, but it took away the gritty atmosphere, which made the middle cases feel very dull to me. Cases 1 and 5 barely elevate it over DR1, though. I can't say I liked DRV3, I really couldn't get into the game or the characters, probably because it felt like more of the same without a fresh spin, and in trying to make the cases elaborate, they came out with inconsistencies left and right. Maybe I played DRV3 at the wrong time, because I remember feeling very disconnected from it.

2:48:42 I think Makoto says he killed Fink the Slaughter Artist because he knew too much, not sure specifically what

I'm glad you explained your distaste for everything without bringing up Danganronpa too much. While I personally couldn't help but feel like this game was failing to escape Danganronpa's shadow (it's doing everything in its power to draw comparisons), a lot of my own complaints originated from the fact that most of the plot felt contrived, or that the mystery labyrinth doesn't matter because you get deus-ex-machina'd out of trouble every time, or that I had mentally solved the mysteries long before I even set foot in the labyrinth. It's just a really rocky experience, not helped by (previously) being exclusive to the Switch.
With Kodaka's other upcoming titles, Tribe Nine and The Hundred Line: Last Defense Academy, I can't help but wonder if he's just banking on drawing people in with the general aesthetics and setup of DR, or if he's just a one-trick pony.

Wait, you typed manual subtitles for a nearly 3 hour video???

    • @ianmurphy7460
      @ianmurphy7460 19 днів тому

You can use recognition software on your script and audio to automatically create a subtitle file. That being said they might’ve done it all manually. The video is all about not making assumptions after all.

for a very long while i hesitated on clicking this video because i am very used to most criticisms of rain code just being surface level bad-faith danganronpa comparisons and nothing else, and just didn't want to hear it again. and while the DR comparisons are certainly there, they're actually fair, and this is a really good criticism of the game! i have a LOT of these same exact gripes about the game- especially the logic leaps and writing inconsistencies. and also i *especially*, ESPECIALLY agree with the gripe about the detectives not being needed to oust yomi. it feels like it makes the whole adventure pointless and really harms makoto's character. unfortunately for me, regardless of the absolute trainwreck of it all, it's a game that stuck to me for so long that i've become obsessed. i still deeply love rain code, despite everything lol. it has me pacing around thinking about how good it *could've* been.
i think this game's overall script needed a few more drafts and passes through the editing team. and the gameplay itself needed more playtesting. a lot of my problems with this come down to stuff that likely just needed more time and review. the game feels... undercooked. i see the vision, but it's most likely game dev crunch that had them rushing things and falling short.
other than some minor things that you misremembered or got incorrect, this is a fantastic review, and im relieved to see a criticism of this game that actually decides to be honest about its problems instead of either gassing it up or just dismissing it as nothing more than bootleg danganronpa and calling it a day. you were incredibly fair to the game even when being harsh, and even pretty funny at some points. im really glad i finally decided to watch this.

Instant subscribe. I agreed with almost everything you said and mentioned this a lot of times in discussions about rain code online. I really hope the next MDA will not make the labyrinths feel so inconsequential among the many others issues the game has
