It's definitely a rough game. DanganRonpa was able to get away with some weaker, flater characters because you'd never be with any one for long and they'd always have other rotating characters to bounce off, but Rain Code's structure left it so that when a major character was unlikeable, you had to put up with them a *lot*. Plus yeah, some of the midgame cases are just really weak, with Chapter 3 being I think my least favourite case in any case-based game I've played! I almost put it down too, but similarly the ending was absolutely worth it.
I enjoyed this game personally, but the growing pains of moving from a death game formula that gave Kodaka an easy access to weave drama and create tension are apparent. It's interesting how both Uchikoshi and Kodaka moved on to a more open-ended less formulaic game, while still trying to retain a bit of the identity of their most famous IPs in Zero Escape and Danganronpa respectively. Ultimately, I think this is Kodaka's weakest effort as a whole tbh. I didn't feel too involved in any of the cases aside from the 4th and 5th chapters, and the main cast of characters are just way too quirky even by Kodaka standards (I even found Halara to be honestly annoying with their whole money gimmick and being basically a superhero). Kodaka usually writes absolutely repugnant characters that grow on you as time goes on, but this game only really focuses on one detective per case, as opposed to having each character be involved in each chapter like they are in Danganronpa. My main criticism is that the cases just need more time to breathe and a less formulaic structure of investigation > labyrinth. Backloading every case to the basically self-driving labyrinth just doesn't work in this game, like it did in Danganronpa, the labyrinth is magnitudes more chill than a class trial, and it just turns all cases into "well, lemme just do the investigation so the game can spood feed me the answers in the labyrinth." which is just a death sentence for mystery games. I really hope Kodaka takes what didn't work in Raincode to heart and improves upon it in the next game, I do like this setting.
I think it's also worth mentioning Uchikoshi THRIVED the second he moved on. We went from Zero Time Dilemma to what a lot of people consider his best game.
As much as I liked this game, it really didn't do a good job getting me personally invested in the cases until Chapter 4. I do really like Chapter 0, but that's because of the big twist of all these advertised characters dying right away, the murder plot being pretty neat for a tutorial case, and Zilch being a good starter villain. Chapter 1 feels like it was *made* for you to not care about the characters, considering none of them (except for the boy and his father) were given names, you don't even get to meet the person you're trying to defend from false charges, and the culprits are pretty bland. Chapter 2 is very popular due to the tragic nature of Yuma having to kill 3 high school girls who killed Karen out of revenge for her killing their friend, but I can't say I like the chapter, because 1. Shinigami and Desuhiko drag it down *a lot,* 2. The twist that all 3 girls worked together was extremely easy to figure out very early on, and 3. The 3 girls get about as little characterization as the Nail Man characters (pretty much all we know about them is that Yoshiko's nice, Waruna's mean, and Kurane's quiet). Chapter 3, in true Kodaka fashion, introduces some elements that seem very interesting, only to scrap them all and have a boring culprit with disappointing motives. ...Seriously, what was the point of bringing the Resistance into the game when they were completely irrelevant to the main story and only barely relevant to the chapter they were in? I think the only point I disagree with you on is that I really liked all the main detectives (except Desuhiko). Sure, they could be annoying at times, but I found them pretty fun to work with!
most of the playthroughs I watched ppl were weirded out by Makoto so this is such a shift (which I gladly accept because he's the best character and carried this game)
I really liked the game but I can absolutely understand why people wouldn't like it. If you didn't really like danganronpa then you probably won't like this game that much, even I agree that some parts were a little bad. The lip syncing was horrible and I didn't really like how Kurumi was written either. I actually liked shinigami but not when she was endlessly insulting Kurumi. I don't mind fluff in dialogue that much either, but I loved the characters and how insane this game and its story is. So this game is prob a 8/10 for me.

I definitely had some problems with this game. The writing is a little stilted at some points, the ending kind of felt like a copout, that "choice" at the last Mystery Labyrinth wasn't a choice because each option ended the same, and...Shinigami. Her jealousy bitchfit in chapter 2 was so annoying in an otherwise pretty great case, and she's basically just a vessel for all of Kodaka's weird fetishes, but I do appreciate her minimal character development. When she hugged Yakou at the end of case 4, I'll admit, I cried. It took a while to get going, but by chapter 4 this game had me on the edge of my seat. Vivia is probably my favorite character, and while I don't like Makoto as much as Crystal seems to, I do agree he's Kodaka's best written antagonist. Yeah, that's fair. The plot definitely only picks up fully by chapter 4, and then you only get that and ch5 as the 'best' parts. I didn't mind the cringey dialogue, but I was also not coming off the back of FF16 and Ghost Trick when I experienced it, so, knowing that background, it makes sense. It's funny that I actually had the opposite experience. I played this right after Fire Emblem Engage, which had some ogofhe worst writing I've ever seen, and not only were the characters here better written and the story more interesting, I actually like Kodaka's brand of Humor.
Shinigami is a very hard character to like. This game would have probably worked better if they toned down a lot of her personality. Solid overall, but Shinigami brought down a lot of the game for me.
Really, I find that she's pretty likable, not everyone's cup of tea but not bad. Technically she isn't my favorite tea character either but I don't think I'd say she's bad or brings down the game. She honestly brings some nice life into parts of the game and I kinda thing for some people they get hung up on the innuendos and spunk and disregard the rest of what she's like in the game
It’d be easier for me to like her if she even bothered to show Yuma some support, at least ONCE. Take the end of Chapter 2, for instance. (Spoilers) He wakes up in an unfamiliar location after almost drowning, and all Shinigami has to say is “How tf should I know where we are??” This would’ve been the perfect opportunity to show how much he matters to her, but no she just remains indifferent the whole time.
@@heartmermaidat Not the whole time, what you want does happens in the last 2 cases for the game. She doesn't do that in chapter 2 because it is early to do something like that.
@@heartmermaidatWhat you just said isn't indifference, she just answered the question of where they were. Because Yuma passed out she wouldnt know where they were or who took them so she cant reassure him everything is okay. Also thats not the kind of person she is(shes blunt and honest and tries not to lie to Yuma for his own personal growth. She literally keeps telling him not to heavily rely on others because it doesnt do good for his growth as a detective and even when shes mad at him she continues to assist him despite this because she cares), but that doesnt mean she doesnt show concern or care, she just doesnt do it in a soothing motherly way. Also she does show not only concern for Yuma's wellbeing throughout the whole game but also concern. Like it wasn't hidden how she felt about him when she has openly expressed it.
I really enjoyed this game. Chapter 3 I felt was the weakest but wasn’t the worst chapter I’ve seen in a game. I definitely feel the last two chapters were absolute gold. And I really loved all the characters. I hope we get a sequel.
I personally really liked this game. I know it isn't even close to a perfect game, but I personally liked the way the story played out and I found the mystery labyrinths interesting, though there were some bullcrap moments in them that annoyed me especially in ch4 (ch4 is really good, I just found the order of questions asked in the mystery labyrinth kinda annoying). Overall, fun game for me.
I'm kinda shocked that some people like Danganronpa but dislike the writing in this game when they're both very similar and have the same writers. I guess context matters a lot when it comes to how people will interpret things.
I think it is not as simple as you put it, simply because of the difference that this game is not a death game formula. In danganronpa you have 2 guarantees: 1. Someone from the cast will always be the culprit. 2. The culprit will always die. Raincode keeps the latter without the former, and that is kinda where the emotional disconnect forms In Danganronpa, during investigation, you are paying attention to what everyone is saying, and even in between murders are spending time with the characters learning about them. Whilist Raincode has a new cast for every case that is mostly gone by the next case. Even in Case 2 where you kill the 3 girls there is just such a small amount of time you learn about them, you didnt spend hours upon hours with them like you do in DP. I dont want to speak for others but I think that is what people ultimately like about DP, the characters. Sorry for a bit of the essay, I love Danganronpa and while I dont hate Raincode I dont think liking DP means you will like RD.
I just watched your final thoughts from your stream archive and being that danganronpa also came up a lot, if you're still curious (and in for a long-winded retrospective series) I would recommend NezumiVA's Danganronpa Retrospective (covering the full series in several hours long videos ^^''....yeah). I think she offers really nice insight into the fandom culture around Danganronpa (especially its early fandom since that's how she got into it) and her criticisms are well-expressed in explaining the series' appeal but also its failings (and Kodaka's messy writing/style). It's a summary retrospective as well though so prepare to shift through a lot of it. Here's a link if anyone is curious! ua-cam.com/video/-yjM_oXkK4M/v-deo.html (could also just youtube search it~~)
RAINCODE is definitely not a perfect game. I love the game, but all the criticisms I’m seeing definitely aren’t wrong. But you also have to remember that this is the first of its kind (assuming more games are made), so there is obviously room to improve. I think given that context, this is actually a pretty good game! Like I said, I love the game. I thought it was more interactive, the cases were intriguing, and I was given a reason to like each character in the end. Also, Vivia best boi 10/10
I enjoyed this game, genuinely I call this one of the best games I have played personally. Of course nothing will beat the Xenoblade series but I loved the characters and the story twists.
I actually love this game way more then the Danganronpa trilogy, also really loved Makoto Kagsutichi. Enjoyed Halara, Fubuki, Yakou, Shinigami and Yuma, and could relate very closely with Vivia and Desuhiko (believe it or not). Even felt way more connected to this story than DR's, not saying DR is bad, I just prefer this game.
I think I might be getting too used to Kodaka’s writing, nothing in this game was all that surprising. Then again, predictable is better then bad. Uhhh, anyway. Makoto best boi. Give him a game.
Hm, what a Game, i say you did this very well, though I have to say that I don’t think the Dialogue was that bad, but I can understand why one would feel that way. Anyway, I didn’t catch all of the Ending, but based on what I could catch, was there two different Endings there or not? If not, then I gotta say, i was sort of expecting this Game to end with Yuma and Shinigami going their separate ways, but that makes me wonder, what could expect from the next Title? ‘Cause I think it’s pretty clear that Master Detective Archives is supposed to be the Main Title, while Rain Code is just the Title for this Game, so i think it’s pretty safe to think that this Game is supposed to be the Start of a Series and if so, I really wonder what they plan to do from here? Regardless of what the Next Title will be, if it will be a Sequel or a Prequel, one thing is clear, we will most likely get a New Main Protagonist if we get another Game, what’s really unclear though, is what the next title is going to be about? It’s pretty clear that the Main Gimmick for this Game was supposed to be the Mystery Labyrinths, so the Question is: will it continue to be the Gimmick for the entire Series or will there be another Gimmick for each Title? If the Former then it would be safe to assume that, whoever the Next Protagonist will be, it will be someone else who have made a Pact with Shinigami, which in turn (if the Next is a Sequel and based on how this Game Ended) it would then be safe to assume that Kurumi could be the Next Protagonist, that would be interesting I feel like. But, if the Latter, then it could be anyone’s Guess about who and what could be next for this Series. What do you think? What would like to see in the Next Title? Though, I guess it’s still a little too soon to think about the Future Title, after all if I have understood it correctly, there’s still DLC for this Game to come out, I wonder if she’ll do those too?
I legit think that Shinigami is way more likable with the Japanese dub, there's something on the inflection of her voice in the English dub that makes her sound so much more condescending and "Junko-like".
The biggest problem with the game, imo, was the side characters. The other detectives are just annoying, particularly Desuhiko and Fubuki, who never graduated beyond their gimmicks. This also extends to the case-specific characters in cases 1, 2, and 4, where nobody is developed very much beyond their mechanical relationship to the case. Additionally, whoever was the director for the English VAs deserves, at the very least, life in prison. The dialogue itself wasn't uniquely bad. It's an anime visual novel, only our Lord and Savior Uchikoshi has ever been able to write good anime visual novel dialogue. But dear god, the director must have told everyone to deliver their lines in the screechiest voice possible.
The main reason I can't take this game seriously is that Yuma is played by the same VA who voices Elliot Craig in Trails of Cold Steel. Even though I like the character, he has major side character vibes, and his performance here is exactly the same as Elliot's so I can't get it out of my head.
This writer is so predictable and formulaic. There’s always a double kill, there’s always a suicide, and there’s always a traitor. I’m so glad I didn’t buy this game, especially since danganronpa 3 really left me conflicted on whether I liked it or not. Also it’s a really petty thing but I absolutely hate that every protagonist HAS to have that stupid bit of hair sticking up
It was dumb tho. The game is painfully mid with a few fun parts, but the mystery solving part was kinda shit, especially with no harder difficulty for people who figure the culprit out before the mystery labyrinth
This game is awful, like legit awful morals, awful gameplay and awful characters, but Makoto is the best character Kodaka ever wrote (besides Gundam and Nagito)
@@Eclipse_NTI don’t like Danganronpa! : D and in fact this game is exactly like it! literally the same gameplay and the same writing style! Its has a twist that I only people who have played Danganronpa will get! It’s just very bad!
i don't think you realise how burned out on games you are after playing several story-heavy titles in a row. watching you playing the original soul hackers, the DDS saga, and AI the somnium files was also super disappointing, you clearly had no energy to properly engage with those you claim that FF and ghost trick had better dialogue, but both of those games are not nearly as satirical as rain code or danganronpa. i think you're better off playing games with classic storylines and romance
Shinigami has shown hints of caring about Yuma and only Yuma. Fubuki that one time was also genuine because shes lonely.

It's funny that I actually had the opposite experience. I played this right after Fire Emblem Engage, which had some ogofhe worst writing I've ever seen, and not only were the characters here better written and the story more interesting, I actually like Kodaka's brand of Humor.
I don’t think Kodaka’s writing is for you 😂
Kodaka's writing is for Kodaka only
What writing ?
There was supposed to be a good storyline here?
@@stbr68lol
@@SorwestChannelyou and the person above are too much of clowns lol stop
Wait... is that Haru's VA voicing Fubuki?
Yep
43:37 I don't think you could have described everyone's frustration better here. Hahaha!
I think it's funny that Crystaahhl disliked the writing in Rain Code but was on board with Forspoken's lmao
Everything makes a lot more sense now... Yes, that definitely sounds about right.
I actually love the writting on this game, Kodaka is amazing
Shinigami is a very hard character to like. This game would have probably worked better if they toned down a lot of her personality. Solid overall, but Shinigami brought down a lot of the game for me.
Really, I find that she's pretty likable, not everyone's cup of tea but not bad. Technically she isn't my favorite tea character either but I don't think I'd say she's bad or brings down the game. She honestly brings some nice life into parts of the game and I kinda thing for some people they get hung up on the innuendos and spunk and disregard the rest of what she's like in the game
I think that's a matter of perspective
I happen to like women who will playfully beat me to a pulp
It’d be easier for me to like her if she even bothered to show Yuma some support, at least ONCE. Take the end of Chapter 2, for instance. (Spoilers)
He wakes up in an unfamiliar location after almost drowning, and all Shinigami has to say is “How tf should I know where we are??” This would’ve been the perfect opportunity to show how much he matters to her, but no she just remains indifferent the whole time.
This game is definitely in my top ten I loved it so much! 😊❤
7:51 was me at Halara at all times 😂
本物のユーマ・ココヘッドがカナイ区の救世主になってるの笑った
I really enjoyed this game. Chapter 3 I felt was the weakest but wasn’t the worst chapter I’ve seen in a game. I definitely feel the last two chapters were absolute gold. And I really loved all the characters. I hope we get a sequel.
Thank you Deena
Damn... No appreciation for writing at all... This is crazy
Yes it very much is
I personally really liked this game.
Overall, fun game for me.
cant watch yet bc im still in the middle of catching up to ur full streams of RC but i hit dat like!!!
I'm kinda shocked that some people like Danganronpa but dislike the writing in this game when they're both very similar and have the same writers. I guess context matters a lot when it comes to how people will interpret things.
I think it is not as simple as you put it, simply because of the difference that this game is not a death game formula. In danganronpa you have 2 guarantees:
1. Someone from the cast will always be the culprit.
2. The culprit will always die.
Raincode keeps the latter without the former, and that is kinda where the emotional disconnect forms
In Danganronpa, during investigation, you are paying attention to what everyone is saying, and even in between murders are spending time with the characters learning about them.
Here's a link if anyone is curious! ua-cam.com/video/-yjM_oXkK4M/v-deo.html (could also just youtube search it~~)
I love her videos I hope she makes a rain code one at some point
for a sec i thought it was Makoto Naegi
Crystahhl... I had the exact same thought about Zilch. 😂
Me too, when we first met I said "Hello there Byakuya"
Well, he DID move a dead body. They have that in common
kodaka characters? taking forever to reach the conclusions the players already did? no way dude
Glad to see I'm not the only one who feels similarly about this game, and Kodaka's works in general haha.
This is one of the games of all time
This is certainly a strange but funny game!
Are you gonna get the new version?
Even felt way more connected to this story than DR's, not saying DR is bad, I just prefer this game.
great video, nothing else to add
I think I might be getting too used to Kodaka’s writing, nothing in this game was all that surprising. Then again, predictable is better then bad. Uhhh, anyway. Makoto best boi. Give him a game.
Makoto’s my favorite
This game looks insane and im not sure if it's in the good way
This game was a mess. Cool concepts, pretty poor execution. Wouldn’t be as much of a bummer if I didn't care about the success of the studio.
Don't we all just love to convince ourselves that Makoto did absolutely nothing wrong?
Yes, yes we do
This game reeks of Millennial Writing.
The main reason I can't take this game seriously is that Yuma is played by the same VA who voices Elliot Craig in Trails of Cold Steel. Even though I like the character, he has major side character vibes, and his performance here is exactly the same as Elliot's so I can't get it out of my head.
If it makes you feel better (or worse), he shares the same voice as Hifumi from Danganronpa 1 and K1-B0 from Danganronpa V3. Let that sink in
I can't believe that I basically marathoned the cold steel arc and currently playing trails into reverie and I SOMEHOW never picked up on this lmaoooo
I think this game is just as good if not better than Danganronpa tbh
Desuhiko thunderbolt is literally pikachu but if they were human. I just wanted to point that out😂
W
Shinigami is very scrunkly
Is it just me or does Yuma look like a...certain other purple haired MC from a...certain other adult game series? If you know, you know.
This is just a I can fix them vid 😂😂🤣🤣🤣
Shinigami is like the prime example of why mascot characters just always suck
This writer is so predictable and formulaic. There’s always a double kill, there’s always a suicide, and there’s always a traitor. I’m so glad I didn’t buy this game, especially since danganronpa 3 really left me conflicted on whether I liked it or not. Also it’s a really petty thing but I absolutely hate that every protagonist HAS to have that stupid bit of hair sticking up
You're just too smart for this type of game 😂
I still don’t understand the plot
@@black-fenrir35more like imperfect clones that go on a human eating spree if left in sunlight, and if they die
The dlc released so far for the game has been bad sadly
No? If you like the characters then its worth it, otherwise skip them, but they aren't bad
Ngl this was painful to watch. I enjoy your persona but not this one at all. Kinda annoying you always acted so smart and make everyone look dumb.
While I disagree about the characters, I can see where your coming from with the other points. Also Makoto is in fact great.
(in ym opinion)your opinion is wrong but i do respect it
Nah, i heavily disargee with alot of what you has said there were some of my favorite character in this
man youre pissed, sorry not every game is exactly like dr
@@Eclipse_NTI don’t like Danganronpa! : D and in fact this game is exactly like it! literally the same gameplay and the same writing style! Its has a twist that I only people who have played Danganronpa will get! It’s just very bad!
i don't think you realise how burned out on games you are after playing several story-heavy titles in a row. watching you playing the original soul hackers, the DDS saga, and AI the somnium files was also super disappointing, you clearly had no energy to properly engage with those
you claim that FF and ghost trick had better dialogue, but both of those games are not nearly as satirical as rain code or danganronpa. i think you're better off playing games with classic storylines and romance
I think this game is just as good if not better than Danganronpa tbh
