Pat the NES Punk not even interested. I won’t be surprised if Mike Kennedy had some involvement in this.
Pat the NES Punk They should lower the price to about $150 and market it as a budget console. There are a lot of people (Such as low income family's) that a cheap console alternative would appeal to.
I think the people at Atari are still getting crunk on the job.
Pat the NES Punk cool enough to be in the beastie boys pat.
This thing will basically wind up being an emulator box. It runs Linux, so the emulation community will turn it into something that will run every classic game under the sun. A shame it's gonna be so expensive, because it does look cool. Also, as other people have said, it's obviously going to run Steam. As for it becoming a success? Oh, hell no, it's going to flop big time.
Since this thing was announced I've always wondered if somehow Mike Kennedy was secretly involved. This is starting to smell more and more like him. I feel like we're going to have a Scooby-Doo moment where we pull a mask off somebody and it's Mike Kennedy, LOL!
they will catch him attempting to backtrack on all the promises made to sell this thing, while also wearing a mask of Ian's creepy friend that ruined ranch dressing for him [the name escapes me at the moment, im thinking kevin, but not sure]
And he woulda gotten away with it, too, if it weren't for those meddling UA-camrs!
Retail Archaeology this comment is to perfect 😂
Old man Kennedy??!
Oh god, how I wish this were the case. :D
I hear the Atari box is electricity compatible.
I could've sworn it needed to be cranked up every five minutes, but I could be wrong.
Oh shut up
That's a strange looking Coleco Chameleon
I dunno... might be too small to put a SNES mini in...
Control Issues i think you can shove a snes classic edition in there
"Preowned games from other content providers" it will run Steam...
Yeah, I was thinking Steam when they said Terraria.
You can't sell preowned games on steam.
only thing is steam doesnt have minecraft only terraria.
Sure you are right Mana, but this is more likely to have a tied down front end. Unless it has for example the Play Store, installing things outside of the available market (assuming Steam) will involve doing things beyond most users. No matter how simple you make it. Related to what I feel is linux's biggest barrier, using the console.
(edit) the reason I mentioned steam not having minecraft, is also to highlight the already suspect marketing from the creators.
ronindebeatrice THE ATARI STEAM BOX
Ian. I'm sorry you feel like crap. But thank you for making my day.
I still feel like this must be some kind of extremely elaborate and forward planning April Fools joke that they'll deliver in a few months.
There's one way they could salvage this system. Have nearly every single 2600, 5200, 7800, Lynx, Jaguar, and Jaguar CD game built in. That would certainly make the package more appealing.
Dark Mountain Productions Especially since there are people still making Jaguar games to this very day.
at least if they had some sort of gimmick like that they might pull in the collectors and retro gamers, but as is it's such a bizarre decision. The Ataribox seems just like a multitude of other mini computers that offer games, except with nothing specific making it unique. Atari should have focused on a deluxe nostalgia system based on their name and the few classic games they have, rather than some weird attempt to infiltrate current gen electronics space
Be hard to emulate all those games.
Dark Mountain Productions you are a dreamer
Trouble is, they only have a licence to use the name, logo and maybe a few first party games. To have every Atari game on there legally would cost a fortune in licensing, if it were even possible to track down every licence holder for games whose publisher disappeared 20-30 years ago. Thery could go down the `get your own roms for the thing` route, but then why buy this overpriced white elephant when a cheap raspberry pi or android box can do the same for a fraction of the price?
Also, Is the Atari brand even relevant anymore? Im struggling to think of a single Atari console game that would hold my attention for more than a few minutes. Paying a few quid for a compilation disk or cheap plug n play is the logical way to legally play these games, and theres always the pc emulation option.
So yeah, this thing, at the price its going for will fail due to a lack of a market at the price point they are aiming for.
If Pat is the NES Punk does that make Ian the PC Engine Punk?
Ian the RetroVGS Punk
I posted something very similar to this on an RGT85 video. Why would you buy this for $250-$300 when you can buy the "Atari Flashback Classics" for PS4 and/or Xbox One (which already has all your streaming services) for dirt cheap? Plus you know names like PlayStation and Microsoft already have and will continue to come out with excellent exclusives. Their are 2 volumes with 50 games on each volume. You should get your Atari fix off that unless their is a rare gem that you want to play then just emulate it.
Unless this ends up having some great exclusives for it just bury it in its grave now.
that's the thing, there have been compilations of old Atari games and such for years, where you'll get like 30 of the best classics. Not quite sure what Infrogames is suggesting one would get out of the Ataribox that's different than, say, the Ouya- beyond a woodgrain and literally the name "Atari"
Love me some of that expensive freedom!!
"Big Lots next to the Zatarains." I LOL'd.
"You won't have to spend any more money if you don't want to." Isn't that true of almost every other console?
It's main competition is the Shield TV. With the Shield TV I get streaming apps (Netflix, Hulu, Vue, etc.) Game streaming (Nvidia service or from my own PC.) Emulation and it can also be a Steam Box. And with the announcement that a remote only Shield TV is coming at $170 the Ataribox is already behind. The pricing would have to be in the 120-150 range to have a shot at making an impact. There is a market for this kind of box, but again not at that price.
2:49 WAHAHAHA, that deer in headlights look Pat! WAHAHAHAHA
So we are basically getting a small underpowerd PC with a 2600 emulator for $250+. Sounds like a great deal to me.
I feel like there is some kind of scheme going on where it doesn't matter whether you make a successful clone console that reaches market, you're somehow still going to make a profit. I imagine from initial investors or backers.
My nephew is 10 and he is obsessed with Atari and Sega. He had never heard of them just a few years ago. He doesn't really like newer games but he loves Minecraft and Terreria. There might be a bigger audience out there for this than you think.
Why atari lol
Well there is a fair few kids on Atari Age that are into the 2600, i guess they understand gameplay is more important then flashy graphics. Could also be the reason there is so many games that are forgotten or unknown by younger generations. Quote that even Pat has used "Just because they're old doesn't mean they're not fun". Atari 2600, Nintendo, Sega, PC DOS ect ect it really doesn't matter aslong as the games a fun..
Minecraft and Terraria are both great games, but they are on everything from PC to the Vita. Nobody's going to buy this console for those two games alone.
Thumbs up if you're watching this on a Turbo Express
Okay from my perspective, this is awesome. I was in the process of designing and building my own "All in one" emulator console when I started to hear whispers of this console. I still have the plans but don't intend on making it, because this will be essentially what I was going to build but (hopefully) better quality and better finishing. I'm sure this will be "hackable" or w/e you want to call it and if you can hook up or install a bigger hard drive this could be a pretty sweet EMU box for people. Sure you can build them for less than $250 but this would be something I'd be willing to pay around that price for. Edit: People threw money at tons of dumber "consoles" (Ouya anyone?) for that price bracket. I guess we won't know till we see it.
The Pharcyde reference alone was enough for a like
1983 here, Atari brand definitely invokes strong feelings of nostalgia but not enough that I'd buy this thing retail.
This is going to be an X86 AMD powered system with a custom Linux distribution. When they say "Pre owned games from other content providers" they mean you will be able to install the Linux version of Steam on the Ataribox and play most of those games too.
so its another emulation machine or just a cheap PC?
From what I can tell it will be a cheap mid grade PC that runs Linux. But Atari's also including emulators with all of their old back catalog of Atari games pre-installed with it.
The operating system for this Atari Box will use its own custom desktop environment like SteamOS, but probably also include a desktop side that will allow users to install Linux applications Such as Steam for Linux as well as Linux games from GOG and Humble Bundle.
dont worry they will port Skyrim to it
No, its TES: Arena.
With paid mods
They already have ported it and it has since been confirmed as a release title... nuff said. Take ma moneh plzz joo sexeh slutz!
Every time Atari comes up, Pat has to mention Enduro.
If this comes out, I'll get it for $20 after it fails. Just like my Ouya
Might have worked when steam boxes were being hyped if it were a special flavor so to speak.
Colleco Chameleon, ZX Vega+ and now Atari Box
Ian is my spirit animal.
But seriously, this would look so good sitting on my entertainment center next to my 2600
I'm from the 70s and the only way I would be interested in this is if it came preloaded with EVERY 2600, EVERY 5200, EVERY 7800, EVERY Jaguar, and EVERY Jaguar CD game. If they did that I would buy this thing on day one. Sadly though, I think we're just going to see the same old games preloaded on here that comes on every AT Games plug and play Atari console.
My friend was on the AtariAge FB page yesterday, talking about the specs of the SOC (System on a Chip) that they're going with, and I don't understand the response. Some ignored the facts about the hardware and kept insisting that it was going to be another Android (Ouya) box, and others said they should just manufacture Raspberry Pi enclosures with their design.
Well, which is it? Is it not powerful enough, or is it too powerful?
Wood grain??? SOLD!
If I recall correctly, this is the same guy that does the Atari watch kickstarter. A UA-camr name StopDrop&Retro did a video on him and that kickstarter as well as one he did in the past.
Why don't these assholes ever put their money into something constructive, like replacement SNES shells? There's money to be made in retro games, but you have to listen to people and see what's in demand, not create some flashy product that nobody asked for and then try to convince everyone there's a niche for it. A great example of a company doing things the RIGHT way is Hyperkin. They don't just listen to their dealers and gamers, they actively encourage people to make suggestions for new products. That's how we ended up with that SNES mouse that they just came out with.
Hyperkin is a prime example, their Gameboy phone cover device is genius. I think it's obvious the guys who obtained the Atari branding/name (Infrogames?) just have gotten out of touch with how valuable the IP is and genuinely think that the Atari name is enough to pull people in to a completely un-unique device. The strange thing is they seem to have forgotten that from the mid 80s until like 2000 that didn't work, when Atari was still a very recognized name, so why would it work now
Personally, I think the SmartBoy is a bit silly (it's so thick that you may as well carry around the real thing), but at least people asked for that.
You're putting words in my mouth. I never said that I want it to fail. I never even said that I thought it was a scam. I'm just frustrated with stuff like this. There are real niches to be filled and problems to be solved in the hobby, and instead of doing a little homework to find out what people actually want, these guys insist on wasting time and resources doing things that have already ended in colossal failure. We don't want or need a wimpy computer to play indie games. The Ouya already proved that, but at least that thing was sold at a reasonable price. Maybe I'm wrong. Maybe they know something we don't, and it'll all work out for them. I hope it does, I'm not so petty that I wish failure upon someone trying to make money in a seemingly honest way. But the fact that they think your typical tween knows what the Atari 2600 even was or that "Minecraft" isn't already on everything from PC to those screens that run ads on gas pumps is very telling. I don't think they have any idea what they're doing.
Who are they aiming this thing at anyway? Is there anyone who wants to play atari 2600 games on a modern telly that hasnt done so with a rpi or kodi box, plug n play, one of the many consoles that have atari collections or cheap mini pc?
I cant see many people even wanting to play such primitive games, I havnt found a single game on the system thats held my interest for more than a few minutes.
Same goes for the 400/800/5200/7800 and jaguar, no one really cares about those systems anymore.
Atari as a brand is pretty much dead as well, most people only know them from the crap asteroids and alone in the dark reboots or top 10 worst console lists thanks to the jaguar.
The guys behind this are also pretty shady with a history of lying and ripping off backers so I doubt the final product will be anything more than some cheapo chinese kodi box with an atari logo on the front.
So, it's another "Steam Machine."
You have to wonder if the "limited edition colors" will be simulating different types of wood-grain.
I really like that it's running Linux. There really needs to be more gaming support for Linux. Maybe if this is successful, we can start seeing some positive change for Linux. But considering Valve failed with the Steam Machines, I doubt Atari will find much more success. I still feel like this is going to be a flop, but now that I know that it's running Linux, I at least want it to succeed now.
There is only two companies that can potentially step back into the console market these days and that's Atari and Sega. As much as i hate to say it, Nintendo only managed to keep afloat in the game for the sole fact of their company name... I also hope they do the name proud and excited they're using a Linux based OS, lets hope it also kicks Sega's ass into gear again. I feel these companies are realizing the retro scene is coming back and in high demand especially with Sonic Word and Nintendo's route
...I kind of want a new atari console. .
Guys, as long as this launches with E.T. 2, there's NO way it can fail ;)
Is it just me, or was Ian more quotable than usual in this video? Almost every sentence could make a great one-liner.
I think if they bundled every Atari pc, console, and arcade game ever made into one console that supports hdmi for $60, I would be interested. The most fancy future I can imagine is being able to go online to play multiplayer games with friends, compare high scores with your friends (Most Atari games are high score based), and have a online high score leader board for all players that own it. Perhaps have yearly tournaments or something if you really want to pump it up.
I'd imagine all these things would peak people's interest. However the direction they are going with this defeats the purpose of making a Atari console to begin with unless they plan on making a crap ton of Atari exclusive triple A titles in which we all know they won't
So wheres this new Atari 5200 controller? I would buy that
No one's gonna pay that much, not even me.
Jason Rotbergs Don't forget there making one with REAL WOOD.... LOL
This is some Scooby Doo type shit. Just waiting for someone to rip the mask off Feargal Mac to reveal old man Kennedy.
I heard that it will be capable of full 480P and displaying in colour :-P
If there was a time to revive the slowpoke meme, now would be the time
Totally worth it if it comes with Custer’s Revenge lol
Watch the final Atari box be shipped in the Jaguar shells lol. This screams Mike Kennedy is involved.
Is a Jaguar shell a design option?
A cheap Aliexpress Android box with an Atari logo slapped on it would have been a better idea. At least it would have been cheap.
This is basically an x86 Nvidia Shield TV, probably with a Raven Ridge Ryzen-based APU (combined CPU and GPU).
Welcome back Atari!
Should have known they were gonna fuck this one up...
Damn! First Big Lots pre-order in history! lol
By the way a Radeon r5 based apu is not mid range pc today maybe in 2010 that would be a mid range pc.......
No, APU is mid range ever. For a time its usable, just like Intel integrated graphics. The CPU part of the AMD APU is almost mid range, not the graphics cores.
If it ends up using the new AMD Raven Ridge APU's (Ryzen cores, Vega graphics) set to be released next year, it would actually be relatively powerful.
Sheriff Blatz possibly. The cpu part is still weaker than standard ryzen. If the igpu uses the 8 pcie lanes that are missing from the discrete card channel. Otherwise it will just gimp dgpu use.
amd "support" , amd says "we would love for you to buy our chips"
Now,if the recent Atari / Jeff Minter team up for Tempest 4000 is anything to do with this it may have a system selling game though.
I am wondering if this is supposed to be a pc that is able to game and do other things that people want. If you want though, you will be able to hook it up to a tv and game on the tv. I think that this is supposed to be like a steam machine.
What I am interested in is how it compares to Nvidia Shield TV and how it delivers additional games?
All hopes are now set on the RetroN 77
I put an "Atari" logo on a box a few years ago, shoulda trademarked that shit
Still needs a cartridge slot.
They need to make some new gen games with all those old franchises, and of course have them be exclusives. Then they might have something. Who knows, they just might step up their game. One can only hope :D
Maybe THIS will be the console that will have the new Battletoads game!
Gotta get my LIMITED EDITION!!! I hope they have flex pay.
The same reaction from 3:34 cut and pasted for the next podcast on the Nes mini video due to the systems running out of stock at stores because somehow scalpers have a Trump Tower of them.
Pat what does bravo sierra mean?
kingkold B.S. As in bullshit.
I'm 13 and I'm a huge fan of retro games and i can confirm i don't know every Atari game ever published...
Waiting for that Moon Patrol GOTY Edition.
I was a little boy during the 1980s, and I remember well playing the Atari games. Why anyone would want to play those Atari games when options like The Witcher 3 et al are available is really quite the question for the ages. Whilst I will cheerfully argue that gameplay is a sadly neglected and frustrating element in modern videogames, every experience I have had with playing the old games has shown me that once I get past the nostalgia factor, the older a game is, the less it has to recommend it.
ReviewTechUSA said it best. If "Atari" want this product to sell well, they are going to need to get exclusive content on it. Games, particularly. Get a few devs to make some games that are exclusive to the Ataribox, and it is in with a shot.
First coleco now atari. When is the new intellivision crowdfunding joke starting?
I'm holding out for Vectrex.
Fat Tiger as soon as Kennedy comes up with another Alter Identity to launch one.
Intellivision is a console not a company.
Bah, Bally Astrocade and Odyseey should be next
There are already a few intellivision plug n plays around, but yeah we want an overpriced crowdfunded white elephant for every console. I favour the n64, done badly to both fleece and piss off the mario fanbois.
Raspberry Pi = $20
How to make your own Ataribox, Buy an offbrand or used android phone for $60-$100, buy Minecraft PE, and Teraria for $10 a piece, Install an Atari Emulator, and the entire library bc it takes like 16mbs. Now not only to you have an Ataribox, You have a portable atari box.
i will be happy with the retron 77
Xbox One S is 250 and plays new games and 4K streaming. Apple TV is like $170 and has 4K itunes movies and streaming and it plays minecraft and sonic CD. DOES THE ATARI BOX TEAM KNOW ABOUT THESE PRODUCTS AND THERE PRICES? DO THEY LIVE IN A CAVE?
"FREEDOM ISN'T FREE - IT COSTS FOLKS LIKE YOU AN ME, IF WE ALL DON'T PITCH IN WE'LL NEVER PAY THAT BILL!!"
I love me some Big Lots. I've seen those Flashback machines.....they look cheaply made and not worth the $30-$40 asking price. The only novelty I see in this Atari product is if they make official controllers.....I NEED THOSE PADDLES! for Kaboom and Warlords damn it!
i just dont get it; basically the guy is wanting to make a laptop that doesnt have the capabilities and functionalities of a common laptop - because he saw kids hook a laptop to a tv? like what the hell is wrong this guy?
somebody that wants to cash in on video games but doesn't understand it
What people want from an "Atari Box" is games from 1977, and the developers are talking about early access to exclusive content? How badly could you possibly miss the market?
He could have meant easier with a keyboard/mouse, and I don't think consoles can get modded minecraft.
Do they know Plaque Attack? Stampede?
Do they know Amidar?
What about Blue Print?
What about Frogs N' Flies? :D
For $300 you could buy an Xbox one, have all the shit this is offering and triple A titles. For a little more than $300 you could build a pc that would outperform even the Xbox one and quash this thing plus have the benefit of being a fully fledged pc. For the money, this thing seems pointless
Microsoft could kill every single one of these just be bringing the Windows desktop to the XBOX One, they could even call it the Legacy Desktop, they could even charge for it!
agreed they are banking off the snes and nes classic hype and releasing garbage
Isaac Osborn Except the Xbox One's library is lackluster.
Say PS4 and you make your point.
RayMinishi As an Xbox owner, I can only agree with you. They still have no real MLB game for XBONE 3 yrs running.
Exactamundo. It's comically tragic how out of touch the creator of this thing is. Actually, considering what this thing is at its heart, I could imagine getting one and jailbreaking it to use either with a TV or as a low-end desktop machine. A little "Atari box" would make for kind of a cool PC for general use.
i wonder what verses are in the book of mike kennedy
BEASTIE BOYS
at least they aren't just laser engraving "Amiga" on a small-formfactor PC case..
If wanting a good aftermarket 5200 controller makes you insane then call me certifiable.
My feedback to Atari - RIP homie.
It's basically an Atari branded steam machine
If they manage to pull off the UI right, it would actually be a good alternative to consoles. Steam Machines were expensive and had a confusing lineup. This is much more in line with console pricing and simplicity. And if it ends up using an AMD Raven Ridge APU (Ryzen Cores, Vega Graphics), it would actually be relatively powerful (at least as powerful as a PS4).
So in a way, this AtariBox *could* be a Steam Machine done right.
Minecraft was always my favourite game on the 2600!
Does it play Roller Coaster Tycoon 2?
Pre-owned content is probably limited to Linux-compatible Steam/GOG games.
I heard it will come with a joystick with one button though
Someone should make a video game with Pat as the mine character as he is doing odd jobs for Ian and Frank. It will be Pat going out to collect all the games he can and for him to get money to get that game at the flea market that he needs for his collection Iran and Frank would have him get things they have been looking for themselves but could find. Frank would have pat looking for old comics, dvd movies and music records. Ian would have Pat to get him other video games that his customers want but he doesn’t have them. The enemies would be other game collectors and people that want too money for their games at flea market or other game shops.
I would get it, if it had hundreds of the best 2600 games, 5200, and 7800 games, and can also play the paddle games, AND was around 100 dollars. That would be worth it. I don't need a device for buying more games or watching videos, I have enough of those already. A nice looking device with Atari games already setup and ready to go, that would be great. It doesn't need the extra stuff, just keep it basic, affordable, and full of great games. I would then buy it.
For 300 bucks, does it even come with a controller?
I want to see what the controllers look like
I wouldn't mind playing games like butcher or bro force with a joystick.
I think it looks cool
Yars' Revenge was on Walking Dead so I'm pretty sure kids know about it now these days.
Ouya 2.0. I'll wait for the fire sale.
A 250 linux box is kind of a cool idea, no doubt it will be locked way the fuck down though.
Since it's Linux based, the only thing they could lock down is the GUI. And they've already stated you'll be able to play games from other stores, like Steam and GoG.
Here's the thing. I agree with you guys that the Ataribox is probably gonna fail. But i actually hope it does not, and i'll probably be doing my part by getting one and giving it the benefit of doubt.
Why? Well, i don't care about minecraft, i don't care about terraria or whatever the fuck it's called. Heck, depending on the controller options, i won't even care for playing the classic Atari games on it. What i DO care about, and what i WOULD want, is that Atari gets back in the game, and starts bringing newer versions of their classic games out. As well as all new titles. This could very well be a stepping stone to that, but only if people are willing to give it a chance. I think it'll become rather clear to Atari, rather fast, that people won't be buying it for minecraft, but rather, for the potential of something brand new from a very nostalgic brand name.
I don't think any young people will buy it at all in fact, i think it'll be naive old farts, like myself, who's hoping that Atari could get back to their glory days of old. Hoping in vain, sure, probably, but hoping none the less. :)
