- This morning an email went out to everyone who was signed up to the AtariBox website and it outlined some important details about the brand of CPU and their target price. They also let us in on which crowdfunding site they would pursue. Still a lot of questions to answer, but with the campaign starting this Fall we will know more soon.

Sounds like an alright area to sit, to me. The Switch can play Doom and a bunch of other 3rd party games so I think being between the Switch and PS4 at a budget price could work. Though could be cheaper for some more hype.

Kenneth Newbery Except Switch can get away with low res graphics because it offers a different value proposition... That being the ability to double as a handheld. This will be lumped together with the PS4 and the XBOX and PS4 are going to decimate this. Both Microsoft and Sony have massive marketing budgets. Atari is a small fish relatively. The brand name is going to save them because almost nobody cares about/remembers Atari. They better have a killer first party or its DOA.

doop i disagree. If it's running Linux i see a lot of potential to be something big. Only problem, the gaming market is pretty flooded right now with 3 home consoles, the mid generation consoles, the primarily hand helds, and Pc. Plus theres the Titan known as the mobile market too. There just might not be space to add another competitor to the ring. One could potentially be killed off and unfortunately the xbox one looks to be on that path. They have no real exclusives, plus they lost like all of their steam. I really liked the 360, but the way Microsoft handled the one wasn't really the proper direction i feel.

Do they actualy think this will work out good? The prize is a bit high compared to other options with (probably) more current games and they probably don't get many thirds or even indies to create games for them (espacially if it takes much more work then checking another box in UE4/Unity for porting).
They may be better off, just staying out of the console market if they can't come up with something special. The problem is, we already got PS4/Pro and Xbox One/S/X for Homeconsoles, the (new)3DS/2DS and PSVita for the go and the Switch combining Homeconsole and Handheld. And of course we have mobile gaming for the casual consumer and PC for the High End Gamer. There isn't much space left where a new competitor would come into play.
The only way I could see this thing as a possible success would be if they market it as a console PC and use a Linux, completely optimised for a Controller, to allow users to do all the PC stuff(office, drawing, programming, optimising games to what you want) with the comfort of a Console(no driver problems, not having to build it yourself to get something good). This could actualy get some people, with not that much money, that want a gaming system but are in need for a PC and only get confused by the options you have when buying/building a PC, to buy this.
Let's see where this goes, they may suprise me and make me want it, but I doubt that for now. :)

From what I have read, back in 2009, Atari was developing small social or mobile games related to gambling. So I think there may be quite a number of both built in free games and demos for premium games along with the opportunity to join some kind of new social networking site where you can connect with other ppl who have atari box and you may even have multiplayer capability.
Kinda like what Sierra Online did many ages ago.
I got the mail this morning and to be honest, i was excited for this but i'm not sure how i feel at this moment... I guess i will wait and see what they bring in further updates...

If they actually handle this thing properly, I'd be glad to see another attempt on _Steam Machines_ in a real small form factor that's still enough for party or LAN games.
I know most people think of the OUYA here and I can't blame them, however, Linux gives possibilities here.
Until we know what chipset and graphics chips are used however, all hope are worth nothing.

Uh yeah but did you actually check out how poorly optimized most Steam games run off of Linux? Gabe was a genius when it came to the creation of Steam but optimization of the failed Steamboxes running off Linux.........yeah even Linus Tech Tips had a field day with that one.

Barely do I notice any that failed entirely but still I have to admit that there are games such as Dirt Showdown that turn into a slideshow for me when playing on Linux on ultra settings.
Trying to play these on Windows10 however makes me scream "YES!" inside.
Still, Linux gaming is fine for what it is.

Do you guys think Atari can reenter the home console market? Considering they want it to play modern games, as long as there is lots of third party I can't see why not.
Problem is the console market is already flooded- you have the PS4, XB1 and Switch. Then handhelds with 3DS and Vita. Besides that we have PC and mobile.
Plenty of places to play games, and we need incentives like exclusives, control options and services to have one platform stand out from the others.
Switch is portable, XB1 has gamepass, PS4 has huge exclusives etc. The Ataribox so far just has the Atari logo.

Yeah sorry I forgot to include that in my original comment. They need a unique feature like exclusives, as you said. At the same time, the Xbox One X has no exclusives and is launching at $200-250 more than what the Ataribox is launching at. So after thinking about it, the Ataribox is looking like the Xbox One S, but not even as powerful as that. With all that considered I guess if it doesn't have exclusives it should fail since the Xbox One S is still a better choice and already has a large library.

MY OPINION: It needs a cartridge slot with backwards compatibility to make it. Atari's brand name is alive still because of nostalgia. So bank on nostalgia and release games on it through cartridge format. If they can sell PC games on a USB stick, they can sell new Atari games on a cartridge. You can still have the digital market, and adding a cartridge slot adds little cost to the development. And, it would double as officially licensed Atari hardware that plays old games through an HDMI output.
Serious, this thing can be so freaking good. If I ever win the lottery (which would be impossible cause I don't play), I am buying Atari, Coleco, or some well known brand and reviving it properly.

If this thing was somehow more powerful than PS4, PS4 Pro and even XB1X would still be better options, because they have guaranteed exclusives and third party support. While possible, I HIGHLY doubt it will be more powerful than PS4.
If it's on par with PS4 or XB1, what's the point? You can get either of those for the same price new/used and both have more games and exclusives.
If it's weaker than XB1, even if it's still above Switch, Switch still is a much better choice. Even at $250 for Ataribox, Switch wins on full portability vs a tiny bit more powerful console locked to your TV, as the difference in graphics will be virtually non existent at that point, AND again, Switch has exclusive titles and growing third party support.

Even if it did, that's no guarantee. Case in point would be Dreamcast. Amazing exclusives, pretty solid third party support, but it still didn't last, even though it really should have.

I'm not completely certain that the "low power" claims by spawn wave necessarily equal "low power mobile APU". (or less performance than let say XO or PS4). This device is constructed at the same time as the next generation APUs from AMD are being released (2018), and might as well be constructed with 14nm Ryzen and Vega technologies. The Power input is a standard laptop connector which can house anything from 15W-160W. but will probably more likely be maxed at around 25W when looking at the enclosure and possible thermal solution. I'm actually not that concerned yet. Looking at the price point and the advancement in technology it might as well be something that would compete with a PS4 in terms of performance. about one or two years back AMD said that we can expect PS4 performance out of their APUs. And that statement kind of fits with timeframe of this machine release.
think about it this way. energy effieciency has multiplied by x4 since the PS4 release. and then we are not taking into account the advancement in ryzen/vega architecture. I'm not necissarily saying that something like that will be in the machine, but I really think the likeliness is much bigger than the underpowered APU of SmachZ.
This is only marginally more real than the Coleco Chameleon so far.

My problem with this is I keep hearing Atarii as people might be thinking of sold off all their assets and got bought out by another company that's now wearing their brand. This pretty much makes this a brand new company, not the one we knew about many years ago. On the one hand I'd love to see another company break out into the console market, would be interesting to see how that shakes things up, but on the other I can't buy into this item on nostalgia because it doesn't apply here. My hopes they find the audience they're looking for on the crowdfunding, I'd love to see a review on this.

According to a 2015 pdf they have 300 IPs. Just search Atari IP catalog 2015 there should be a pdf. Most are repeats of the same titles just in different version. But they do still own Tank. With the popularity of world of tanks, Warthunder, and armored warfare they could make their version of that.

After the Atari Jaguar...I have doubts. If they want this to sell, we need to know the controller design, specs, and price. Telling you now that $300 may be the ball buster. The Switch is an exception as it is a portable/home console and has wireless controllers. Eh, it's a wait and see for me.

Atari's name has somewhat been tarnished since their fall, I don't think people have the same nostalgia for Atari as something like Nintendo. Tbh, I don't know who the console is for since it costs about as much as a Xbox One, PS4 and is probably weaker and doesn't have a backlog of games. And the switch is a hybrid for close to the same price and caters to a slightly different demographic. I don't think this will do so well, but hey I could be wrong.

Atari Games, my collected Humble Indie Bundles, Emulators, Netflix, a browser … And it looks amazing. It'd be a great addon to my TV. It won't compete with Xbox/PS/Switch with that price tag but it will definitely fill the gap for all those who want to have a neatly designed device next to their TV screen that brings many of the things to the living room that were still reserved to PCs and emulators.

Jaroslav Houdek, really? Emulators for all consoles are on the Xbox? But yet, can the Xbox run my Steam Library? Can it run my homebrew? Does it look as great in the living room as an Atari-styler retro console?
So, yes, if Xbox games are something for you, get an Xbox and you might not need the Atari Box. if you want to make your living room a bit smarter and more game compatible and you come from the Linux-PC/Mac-world, then Atari box is all you need.
Steam sucks, but that is just my opinion. There are several emulator apps for xbox one, some even support PS3. Homebrew yes, just activate developer mode. Scorpio edition looks great, white ONE S is also pretty. The atari box is great unknown, so far it looks like that raspberry or old mini PC would do the same job for less.
Considering that it's mains-powered, I think it's going to be using a Bristol Ridge chip. At that price point, hopefully something along the lines of A10-9700E, with maybe 8 gigs of RAM and a mechanical HDD. The newsletter says that there is full OS access, and that they allow using third party platforms, which means Steam is an option. I'm not sure why people are immediately dismissing this as an overpriced emulator box, depending on the spec this could be a pretty attractive little computer.
I think this could become a cool PC/Console box, not necessarily targeted just at gaming. It could become a heavily nodded system with emulators, maybe IDEs and other tech stuff. But I can't really see them justifying that amount of money for a low powered system really.
Gandalf the Black rasberry pi is good for emulators so it will have to be 200 dollars for a good deal.
They will acheive the funding they need, guaranteed. But I don't think it'll hit mass production. So those of you who will pay the asking price and buy directly from the crowdsource project might be able to sell them again on the internet for over and above what they paid.

Not sure if they're going to go for an Ouya type of thing in which they have a haven for inde games or what. That almost seems like what they might be going for due to the power limitations but it's hard to tell. Even if it is, it doesn't sound like the switch will be that much less powerful than it and the Switch has a bigger company backing it which can pay devs to optimize their games, so the power difference shouldn't really matter. Due to the Switch being around the same price point and portable, this would need something to set it apart.
The only thing I can really see them doing to set it apart would be making it more open source. That would allow for mods and things, but I'm still not sure if that's enough. It's very easy to lag even a good system with just a few mods for games, so with something that wouldn't be considered very powerful by today's standards, it's hard to imagine much mod support.
Maybe it'll just be a Steam Box type of thing. A PC experience in a console so people who think PCs are too much trouble can get it and not have to worry about drivers and things. But who knows? Maybe they will just go all out with these and try to get as many games as possible on them. With most newer consoles being very expensive, it could act as a kind of middle of the road option for people who want a bit more power than the Switch, but don't want to pay $400 or so for the XBox 1 or PS4. Still, keeping the things stated earlier conserning the it against the Switch, it's hard to see it doing well against any of the other consoles.

Being open and running Linux doesnt mean that they target at "technologically advanced users". Maybe it means that they want developers to have more freedom, or maybe they want to launch a Steam Machine with the addition of old atari games preloaded.
Its an Atari branded steam box and will likely use a mobile chip set or an APU likely Godavari or if they really want to push it Bristol ridge.
