What do you think about the Atari VCS finally reaching backers? Is it a momentous occasion, or just the beginning of the end?
Check out the Twinblasters video @ua-cam.com/video/FFh1s90OSOM/v-deo.html
There's a guy who got Linux Steam running on it :) He did more in a week than Atari did in 4 years...
Hey Pat, I personally know the person who uploaded the video you covered. I played the system myself for about 40 minutes - the system lags at 4K (think 20-30 FPS) and plays at a near flawless 60fps at 1080p. I tested the same games he did plus one more. I played the fart game specifically. Will you get the system at some point?
Love it and so much better than I thought. MODERN joystick is awesome with a spinner for Tempest and others.
Whoa, thank you so much for the shoutout! I uploaded a secondary, more in-depth video yesterday, too
Beginning of lawsuits, and potentially the end. Like the gamepad is literally just a Switch Pro Controller rebranded, and put in a slightly different case. Nintendo is going to be pissed.
To clarify, I knew when I talked about Pitfall that it was Activision. I don't think it means it's impossible, Atari would be smart to invest in some licenses to expand that classic library
Just wanted to wish everyone a happy holidays.
Seasons Greetings!🎄
@@PatTheNESpunk Hee!😀
Happy All-the-Days!
happy new year
It’s the best new console of 2020 to buy, because it’s the only new console of 2020 that you can actually buy.
Actually, you can't buy it. You had to pre-order it as a backer on IndieGoGo. The retail release will supposedly happen in March next year, though whether or not they actually go ahead with that remains to be seen.
So all those new XBoxes that I keep seeing advertised...
So my first thought was Wow Tommy Telarico mananged to release it... then I realized Tommy is making the Intellavision and I thought about how many of these damn things there are.
Yeah, I got it messed up with the Polymega.
Well, Atari did release before Intellivision historically!
Amico fans make fun of the vcs but they are both the same right now the vcs even did what amico did not we will see if the amico ever comes out but if it does it will probably be similar to this but with more drama.
@yotv van, the only drama will likely come from another of Pat’s tantrums. You see he couldn’t help himself taking another jab at Tommy here in closing.
Atari tweeted a video in which it shows them stealing money from someone? Who is running that Twitter?
Well hell finally froze over, what a year 2020 has been. We live in interesting times.
fo sho
I will stick to playing the Atari and Activision collections on the PS2.
And I will stick to playing them on my UNOcart and my raspberry pi.
Yeah exactly
and I will stick to playing them on my OG VCS.
@@jcchaconjr , wow, a lot of elitist pricks are in this thread.
@@paxhumana2015 Why? For preferring to keep $400 in our pockets?
I feel turned off again for the VGS. How does it not include a controller for the price mark?
Happy holidays and good health to both of you~!
The best feature of this thing is the fact that it has the Atari logo. Hell, that’s probably it’s only selling point at this stage.
Wasn't that always the case though?
Is that even a selling point any more? Atari isn't Atari any more, it's a rotting husk of what it used to be.
That's the selling point of all these things. They are selling you a name, the same goes for the intelevision and the failed colleco chameleon. All just nostalgia baiting for money.
@@medes5597 Nope! the case used to be an intricate matrix of slices. :) But, then they realized they'd need molds for all that and just buckled on a clamshell.
@Samson Themighty We backed it because we have trouble drawing three lines on things we want to look at. Figured it would be less taxing to spend 40 hours of wages instead.
So the "store" is more of a gofundme
@@zoiks6631 He's a James among Screenwolves....
Woah, it came out before the Polymega, but still AFTER Paprium
And after the NT Mini Noir, i am enjoying the complete 2600 and 7800 +more systems, in FPGA, crispy 1080p native output and tons of other features
You bought a $500 Nintendo to play Atari games?
$400 and a mandatory internet connection (per your last video) to play Centipede. Borked store that only takes your money with very few things to download if it functioned in the first place.
At least it released, but right now I'm just not seeing much. Makes me appreciate the simplicity of the Nintendo/M.2 SEGA minis.
This is usually the point where I say I don't want it to fail for the sake of the backers getting what they paid for, but ever since the initial dev came out about not getting paid to work on it... eh..........
You can install Windows 10 on it and that doesn't require an internet connection.
Its got a ryzen cpu gpu and 8gb ram. Wait for a deep discount, hack it and you got a cheap mini steam machine
No need to hack it - booting up another OS with Steam on is fully supported.
Well Atari can at least say more than the Coleco Chameleon people. They did indeed release a product. Wether or not it's up to snuff to what Atari promised well we'll have to find out. "After they figure out the kinks it may be quite fun."
The Coleco Chameleon was at least a kinda cool concept though. This is just some generic Android smart-TV box.
@@Eddies_Bra-att-ha-grejer I suppose.
Amazing it actually came out take that "coleco".
@@yotvvan2472 Sure, it didn't get off the ground, but the concept was at least pretty cool. It was basically gonna be an FPGA console that would run the cores of several retro-style fantasy consoles on it.
I just want one for décor purposes, the thing looks awesome
I think it’s hideous.
It is actually a nice looking system and even better looking in person.
I feel you guys didn't watch or read the comments of Twin's video, or his follow up. The issues he had were addressed by Atari.
Was the issue of nothing on the system for $400 addressed? Why spend that much money when you get a Xbox series S for less? This thing is insane. Who would buy this and why? 100 games you can play anywhere! Netflix and Chrome for more than a series S. This is hilarious.
@@knotryter I didn't buy it or back it, but watching the videos on it from this channel and ReviewTechUSA, I think the hate is a little overblown. This seems to be something geared toward enthusiasts and casual gamers for indie developers. Even if Atari drops support, it can be used to play Stadia games via Chrome or Steam games on the PC sandbox mode.
@@knotryter being able to do things other than play games by installing Windows 10 on it is a bonus
It doesn’t matter that Atari addressed them. It matters they sent out the consoles like they did, and without an operable game store.
Sorry I've been playing so much 2600 in Retroarch on my phone that I forgot my opinion on the VCS
Sorry for that.......you deserve better.
It looks pretty good tbh. I know I wanna pick one up.
Im interested in that classic joystick, it would be cool for retropie setups.
I think I'm good with my 29.99 Atari Flashback Classics cart for Vita. 150 games on the go.
Channel Super Nicktendo received it, puts it aside on a table, talks about all the stuff we already know from the internet and concludes: it will look nice on the shelf. That’s exactly the audience for it. He who wants that Atari Casing. It will be outperformed by Larkbox, Miniforum and all current mini pc’s out there, with this pricepoint.
there has to be a better way to spend 400 bucks
If you *just* get the console it will be 300$. I remember a lot of these miniPCs only let you have EMMC storage and had soldered RAM. The Atari VCS has an NVME slot and let's you upgrade the RAM to like 16 or 32 GB and of course uses a Ryzen APU instead of a relatively weaker intel CPU.
The Atari Vaults being on there is amusing since you could get those for a couple of bucks on sale over the past few months.
I can't wait to pick up a couple of those joysticks on clearance for $5 each
same. Stella's gonna be bad-ass with these.
Good luck with that. Our economy is slowly turning more and more into a scalper's market.
@@oldmandandan Patience is the cure for most scalpers. And timing.
@@oldmandandan I don't buy anything from scalpers.
A retroPi set up is like 75bux for everything u want and does everything this does
You can even buy those scammy already set up retro pi's floating around for less then half the price of this thing if you really don't want to download a pre-loaded image and write it to an SD card.
negatory, good sir. The exclusive experience here is in what the controllers can deliver. You aren't going to find a convincing atari experience with a raspberry pi until you add on a stock joystick/paddle set with adapter or a solid usb equivalent. This would add another $20-40 to your $75 quote, plus the trouble to configure it accurately (retroarch-stella can be ishy with paddles while virgin stella is much more accommodating).
retroPi can't run source engine games. It can barely run UT2004 through x86 emulation. This has a Ryzen APU, it can run everything retroPi can and actually play relatively new games like most of the Call of Duty library, everything made by Valve except Half-Life Alyx maybe, probably the Master Chief collection if you tone down the graphics a bit, etc.
It came out, how stunning and brave!
Someone get ReviewTechUSA in here, we need to ask the developers some really easy questions and make this $400 item look appealing!
Rich tomorrow: The Atari VCS Store stole my money, and I'm OK with that. Let's get into it...
You're a bit off on the prices. The base 800 unit alone is $300. Still as a gaming machine it makes no sense. An XBOX Series S costs $300 and can also emulate all the way up to PS2. As a stylish 4k media center PC this is actually pretty solid though. A barebones kit with similar specs and no hard drive is around $250ish so you're basically paying a $50 premium for a very stylish case and some retro games. Honestly, that's acceptable.
So as a gaming console, hell no. As a small workstation PC I'm actually all for this thing.
A version of the Atari plug n play consoles for modern TVs that can maybe download new games would of been neat. Not 400 bucks neat but at a reasonable price stocking stuffer neat.
Hello
Off topic. But does anyone know with the nes mod with the blinking win, can you damage the nintendo by pushing down the cart?
I had an nes that i bought off ebay, and didnt realize with the blinking win mod that you dont push the cart down?
I pushed the cart down, not realizing im not supposed to. Can i do damage?
Obviously now i know im not supposed to but can i do permanent damage?
The Switch still doesn't have Netflix but this does...
This thing is pretty much a Linux computer.... it’s probably not even a native app...... probably web based...
@@gmcnewlook Yep, they included paperwork in the box that literally says this is the case.
I have 8 devices that play netflix in my apartment, some overlap multiple times over. why does anyone care if switch has netflix, lol. It's like saying Wii didn't play dvds in a time i had 3 other other devices hooked up to the tv that played dvds.
This does not have Netflix. Netflix was installed by the guy doing the review.
@@SumDumGy technically usually consoles don’t have it pre installed.....
Omg it was almost 10 years in the making
I would rather play the Atari Jaguar tbh. That at least had personality and it looks way cooler.
@@HiNRGboy 3DO was *KING* of the FMV gun-games!
The jaguar had a few exclusive games not very good games but that alone makes it more valuable than this.
@@yotvvan2472 had the best doom port until the PS1 came out and even then the PS1 version stole the levels from the Jaguar version and it doesn't even have the keypad which the Jaguar controller has so you have to cycle through the weapons one by one.
A lot of Hobbyist port the Atari St games to the Jaguar.
What? It came out? Holy crap.
Just spitballing here, as I havent seen anyone post actual 3dmark specs, but the VCS cpu seems to 3dmark anywhere between 2000-4000, or roughly 10-20% of my 16GB Asus G750 gaming laptop from 2013.
Anxious to see how Project Zomboid runs on it in Steam!
Is it on sale at Kmart? Or K-B Toys?
Shots fired at the Amico hidden. Lol
No developers=New Hackstation...🌪️🦾
OR you could just do it on your computer instead of the idiots that waste money on crap just to download Roms. Atleast the PC actually does other things and has an actual valuable purpose.
Apparently Atari keeps ignoring people reaching out to them to develop games for it.
Is there a playerbase at all to sell to? Could it be a good platform to target for a small time indie dev to target, to have less competition for the little audience there actually is?
.....or, even presented as a Game Maker's platform. Instead of just a single piece of software like the GameMaker suites, the entire console/platform is marketed towards game creation. Harnessing the volume of free dev tools for linux and a friendly interface, it seems like a missed opportunity.....an iconic brand like Atari handing the artistic, creative light their brand once represented to a new generation through a dedicated game development console....smh.
Before Star Citizen even!!!
Will this play Atari 5200 or Jaguar games?
man, one could just play pitfall on one of the Atari flashbacks for God's sake
its a shame & a sham i picked up the atari vault for $9.99 at walmart over the summer i can get the 50 game add on for $4.99 on steam.id rather pick up the kfc console than the atari vcs.its pretty sad when the colonel becomes a more trusted name in video games than atari one of the early cornerstones of the arcades & home console market
I love my Flashback Gold and was able to upload all 400+ Atari-compatible titles (including all Activision) so I can play anything ever released on the 2600. Turns out Pitfall 2 and Megamania are my favorites in 2020. As cool as I want the VCS to be, I really don't know why I would spend $500 to buy it. I don't need another computer or smart TV. I have a MAME cabinet with 400+ arcade games. I have PS4. I am a huge Atari and retro gaming fan, but is there ANY reason to get this other than as a collectible?
Could be used as a solid emulation station.
I don't think anyone, backers included expected the vcs to 'rival' PS5 or any mainstream system.
There's some interesting aspects about the vcs but it's a smaller niche market and that's what Atari is targeting.
Regardless, it'll be interesting to see how this unfolds.
Yes, Space Invaders was an Atari developed/published game - but you'll likely not find it in any Atari collection, because they licensed the exclusive home console rights for Space Invaders from Taito back then, which has long ben expired. That's why you don't see it anymore. Even the licensed Space Invaders you see in some of the old Flashback consoles is just a quasi-arcade version of Space Invaders, and not the original Atari release.
Hell I got asteroids on Rebel Galaxy Outlaw a space shooter I bought for PS4. You stop at planetary outpost or space stations and you can play pool or play an arcade game and even cards.
If they ever bother to send me mine, I'll use it as a stand for my nt mini :)
I wish they would do something new with the old games like program an A.I. for games without it like Combat
IAN!!!!!!!!!
People are going to write it off, then they're going to unlock it and throw on some homebrew then say it was misunderstood. Or it could go the way of the Ouya, if anyone remembers that.
They fixed the store issue and there are now a dozen or so games on it, mostly indie games. Atari told backers that there would be bugs, that this is more like an “early release”, they won’t sell it retail until the software is more complete and bug free. They are actively talking to backers, getting feedback and bug reports, through a private backer-only Discord channel.
Too much defense. The store issue wasn’t a console bug, and those games, regardless of how many were there in the day of release or ten more a week later, is irrelevant, when you pay money for a service that doesn’t provide the games.
@@SumDumGy The store issue was very much a bug, why do you think it would be on purpose? It only ever affected one person, and his problem was fixed the same weekend he got the device, and the number of games available for purchase also shot up over the next week.
And the fact that someone got an early-access device on day zero before everyone else, while their store was having problems, you expect them to have hundreds of games to choose from for purchase? You seem to be exceedingly negative for no reason.
@Dreamwriter4242, you seem to be putting a lot of words in my mouth, partner, and making a lot of assumptions.
The words “...exceedingly negative for no reason,” are completely invalid when responding to any comment or complaint about this console, and you know it. Everyone here knows it.
@@SumDumGy What words? You said the store issue wasn't a bug, you said that the fact that they didn't provide lots of games from "the day of release" was all that mattered, regardless if they released a lot more within the next week. The first statement just plain wasn't true, the second was a very odd opinion to have considering the gaming industry and console launches in general, let alone early backer-only niche releases. Sure, after the delays OUYA finally launched with like 1500 games, but we know how that turned out.
@Dreamwriter4242, Damn, you’re exhausting and presumptuous. Maybe a little shy on your reading comprehension skills, so let me try again. Read slower this time.
I said the store issue was not a *console* bug. Clearly it was something else that they were able to address on their end. If it were a console bug, then it would take a firmware update to fix for him. That was an issue they should have checked before shipping any consoles. Clear on that?
I didn’t give a quantifiable amount as to what was an acceptably number of games. I made a remark that those games that should have been available at launch, weren’t. We are talking a nostalgia console here that should already have a substantial library at its disposal. You then came back and shot of your mouth, implying that I was complaining that there weren’t hundreds of games for it. I said no such thing. Doubling games from five to ten in a week, after more than two years development and a historical Atari library isn’t any sort of accomplishment to be proud of.
No, we *don’t* know how the OUYA turned out. I know nothing about that beyond the random reference I read people like you (UA-cam commenters) make.
You have a nice night now. I’m don’t going round and round with you.
That controller is Dope AF! Does it work on PC and can we buy them stand alone?
@lass kinn Haha, true. That mouthpiece didn't know shit about his own console/controller.
I’m curious if that old style joystick’s paddle function works decently. 2 reviews and not even a simple feature tested
They can probably make more money just selling controlers than this enitre console.
About time Atari!
Did they actually package the 2600 games with it...OMG...
So I’m buying a classic controller when it goes on sale just for roms on my pc
For looks or feel? May I instead suggest an ebay/used purchase of an original joystick and paddle set, a low-latency raphnet 9pin atari/serial to usb adapter, and perhaps modifying the joystick to use tactile microswitches and clean the 1MOhm linear pots in the paddles to ensure steady action? The tac-switches remove all the pains of long-term play, and improve performance on hi-speed back-and-forth applications like Track and Field.
There has to be a cheaper alternative than this.
@@yotvvan2472 depends on what sort of experience you want, really. The AtGames portable and console products scratch one type of itch. The Retron77 scratches another. Emulation rigs and original hardware all have their different feels. This is like the Timeshare version of what the nt mini accomplished. The backers got suckered into an idea and now need to make the most of it.
@@oldmandandan I mean for the controller he said he just wants a controller for his pc not the actual console.
I was reading a forum about penny stocks and someone is wondering if it will go up because of the release. It's at $.36, maybe a quick buck? I just can't see it.
Maybe Atari VCS can move some units due to the shortage of actual consoles people want, you know, PS5 and Series X.
I'm waiting for Ian to tell a Tales from the Game Store where he suffers a deluge of VCS consoles!!!
hey should just get a pc then.
I was so close to backing this, then I saw the price tag for their version.of the pro.controller. $50 🤔
KFConsole will dominate the market.
Finger lickin good games
Gotta grease them sticks.
I'll stick with my $10 modded wii I found at a flea market
Its been said before, but when people think Atari 2600, they rarely are thinking of Atari made games. They want the Activision games.
Oh...I shoulda waited a lil bit in the video.
Some of the later Red Label release are pretty good and are made/published by Atari. Solaris is one that comes to mind. Great game, outstanding graphics and gameplay for the time and system.
Can you even stream on it ? What's the point
I live in Canada and wanted one for novelty's sake, but they don't ship anywhere but the US. They're not even serious about this thing, themselves.
The Indiegogo campaign delivered globally - I'm in Sweden and I got mine a few days ago.
Ah the Atari Paperweight. Finally released
Even the At Games Arcade legends line is way more appealing and likely to be popular than this (not fair to compare, but At Games has come a long way with that one)!
Just googled.....snazzy!
Well the eleven people who give a shit will be excited.
I don’t understand?
i will just save the money and play the atari flashback plug and play system
FINALLY
WOW! one of these nostalgia bait consoles actually made it to market? and it's just a really expensive flashback? lol I mean in theory (when they eventually become available) you could buy a PS5 digital for the same price as this thing so who's this for? It's just an emulator box with some features you can find on a 50 dollar chrome/fire stick.
Well, no. You can use it to run the old stuff if you want, but it's a capable (but no PS5) piece of hardware fully able to run current games as well. Being an open platform, there's a lot of room for indie developers to release some interesting content.
disclaimer: I am a backer, and my kids have been glued to the Atari VCS since I got it two days ago.
I know what I'm spending my stimulus check on!
What?
It HAS to be an outright Android machine; there's NO WAY Netflix developed an app specific to this "platform" XD
It's Linux and a web browser...
this will be clearenced in a year ill pick it yup for 49.99 for shits and giggles
I’ll wait until I can get one at a 5 and bellow 😂

Now that the Jailbreak is out for the NT Mini Noir I can play pitfall via FPGA, how does it compare?. This is a officially licenced product so I take it this is waaaaay better. How's the spinner / paddle on that thing?......
🤔
Same here! Noir rules! My Pi had huge lag on Atari 2600, finally got rid of that!
I got the 3 Atari Flashback sets for a total of $60, 150 games or so and i can play online with friends on other xbox's. Plus its an Xbox one!
Why would you buy this when can just download stella and install it on your pc and play any atari 2600 rom for free. Just download an atari 2600 romset and you'll have every game. Or just download your favorites 1 by 1.
First Paprium, now Atari VCS? At this rate the Coleco Chameleon will ship next week.
Don't forget the Polymega
Yeah wasn't this like 3 years in the making?
How did this atari vcs sell out...
"It's a computer" We just want the OS to see what can be done. That's the whole allure.
Windows Mobile was (and imho still is) the best Mobile OS, and had cameras whose hardware is still superior to anything Apple or Samsung has ever offered; all backed by Micro$oft, but it died as it did because its store and app offering was rubbish; valuable lesson here.
Hopefully this is only a bumpy start for the Atari VCS team! Now that it is being properly released, I'll gladly pick up a retail version of it. :)

PEOPLE ARE SCALPING IT? Well thats not surprising...but people are buying it?! Now that is surprising.
I thought everyone thought it was fake vaporware...?!

Why not the Atari 7800? You can play 2600 games on that as well.
@@sharoyveduchi Oh, most definitely! I suppose it's a diminishing returns thing for me. Too few games in the 7800 library for me to make the effort. I remember playing a quick couple games of robotron 2084 on the 7800 before I'd walk to school in the morning before I ever even knew how beloved the arcade game was. But, I only have so many CRTs, so my robotron and pole position II and xevious itch gets scratched via retroarch emulation on the raspberry pi and my 2600 junior stays plugged in for everything else.
