I was at a car boot sale (kind of like a yard sale but everyone brings their stuff in their cars to one place) the UK a year or so ago and I saw a boxed original Gameboy. I had £30 on me and I asked how much the old lady wanted for it. She said £75. I said that was way too much and she said "The box alone is worth more than that on eBay!" I told her that it was not and we were not on eBay. she was not happy.
That car boot sale sounds fun. I usually walk away from retarded sellers but sometimes I take it personal and pull out my smartphone to show them on the spot what it sells for. They don't like that either.

Don't forget to tell people like that, that ebay takes 10% of whatever you sell it for including 10% of what you charged the buyer for shipping. Also, it's possible for a buyer to back out after the auction ends on ebay or could possibly return it to you because they claim it wasn't as described (even if you have listed as no returns). Remind them you have the cash now and ready to finalize a sale. If they want to possibly make a little more on ebay, then they can go through the inconvenience. You can also tell them "well I intend to take it how and play it, not try to resell it on ebay."

Launch day Genesis factory sealed in plastic? Even then I doubt 2k for that one.
There were 2 Genesis last month that sold for quite a bit. One (NIB and came packed with Altered Beast) sold for $2,076.00, and the other (NIB and came packed with Sonic) sold for $1,902.00.
As for why they sold for so much? According to the description:
"This item is from the private collection of a gentleman who worked in the toy industry for more than 20 years. It was never displayed or sold in a store and has been in storage for many years. Please check out my other listings for additional vintage toys, as I will be liquidating the collection over the next several weeks."
Apparently, there's a market for that.
Two of them in September sold on eBay for just that much. I wager that's the source of the claim.

Lol, I saw that article and couldn't believe the ridiculousness of its claim; I'm very glad you made this video to let people know who may get fooled. I just picked up a Genesis TODAY for 40 bucks to relive my youth, and that was from an actual local store, I'm sure if you go on ebay and buy it from someone directly it's even cheaper. Do you know what's the worst? if you Google "Sega Genesis" and you know how those commonly asked questions that relate to the search appear also on the search results? Well if you click on the one thats says "How much can I get for a Sega Genesis" it gives you the answer from that exact article!!! There's like probably thousands of people Googling this thinking they have something worth $2,000.

I felt the same way with Stadium Events going for tens of thousands of dollars. Gaming enthusiasts ASSUMED there was only a few copies in existence before Nintendo bought the rights to the Family Fun Fitness set by Bandai. Shortly afterward, a guy by the name Tim Atwood unveiled he had several sealed copies of Stadium Events proving it wasn't as rare as what opportunists thought it was.

I think i saw that one too. i see a couple of those a week and i just laugh at em. the only way i could see it being worth that much is if it is safely hdmi modded and covered in 24k gold with silver logo and a ruby reset button and power switch, that comes with a platinum engraved box.

I was a Megadrive kid for a few weeks. I got one for Christmas when I was like 5 or 6. I hooked it up to the TV my parents gave me and it had colour and no sound. A few weeks later my parents got a replacement console. It came with sound... but no colour. My parents then gave me a choice. Get a 3rd SEGA or switch to Nintendo. I chose the SNES. Thank god I did as most of my friends had the SNES so we had a good chance to swap games with each other.

Same christmas for me too! All I asked for was Sonic 2 for the Game Gear (we were pretty poor then) and my parents surprised me with the same box. Most magical xmas morning of my childhood.
If you can get someone to pay you $2000 in cash for your Sega Genesis console after you tell them the good, bad, and ugly parts of your console, you politely accept their money, hand them your system, and walk away. Then you go on Ebay and buy another Genesis system for cheap and you made profit.

When I was a kid back in 95 I thought I had lost my Sega Genesis (version one) and about 30 games when my family had moved. My uncle recently died of a stroke and his wife had put to side some of his stuff that we could have and in box was my Sega with my initials on the back. I do remember him helping us move. I can only guess he helped himself to it or it was left in his truck and he just threw it in his garage and forgot about it.
I know this is an older video, but did you see one of the others in this article was the Game Boy?:

I stopped by a random garage sale last year, dropped the usual question "have video games?" Guy told me no, but he had an NES and a cib Super Mario 3 that he was hanging on to, and told me that SMB3 cib was worth $800..
On a positive note, I did in September see Bio Motor Unitron for £28 loose in a store that’s a train ride away from where I live. Went back last week and found the game was not only still there, but it had been marked down to £20! I bought it and used the £8 I saved to get Angry Birds Trilogy for 3DS off ebay, allowing me to delete the iOS Angry Birds games off my iPhone!
Loved my sega genesis that I got for Christmas of 91 with sonic packed in. I loved my NES and am surprised I wanted a genesis over a snes but the speed of sonic just mesmerized me & I had seen what the genesis was capable of a year or 2 before I got mine & was blown away. Storage Wars hyped the NES values up over night a few year back but I can't complain since I have about 100 of them but it sure made buying anymore for a deal pretty much impossible. Clone consoles are helping I think bring the prices back to reasonable amounts.

I bought a Version 2 Sega Genesis from a local used game store for $20 two years ago. I bought a Version 1 Genesis for $40 back in June. I like the version 1 because of the headphone jack that allows the sound to play in 2.1 stereo whereas version 2 only does 2.0. The subwoofer sound helps a lot.
This explains all the recent posts on ebay for these systems for 2K.

Hey! I got my original Sega Genesis the same Christmas as you, same version with Sonic 2 packed in too, though I still got mine, been playing a new game or new to me anyway on it lately called Sorcerer's Kingdom it's an RPG and it's pretty fun.

Ps the only reason I am going to eBay is because in my area there is a retro gaming store that has people going out to flee markets, garage sales etc then turns around and sells them for huge inflation. It kinda sucks lol!

I am curious while i was visiting the states last week I went to a games store in NYC They had a sealed in plastic NEES for 999 USD. Would you say that would be a crazy price to ask? They did seem slightly overpriced being in the middle of he city but just curious. P.s I didnt buy it as A dont have a spare grand and I would then need a step-down transformer for it if I was dumb enough to open it.
I loved the Sega Genesis, but it's a combination of reality and nostalgia, because I remember the great games, but I also remember that I kept my NES while I had my Sega so I could have alot to play, before I got the Original PlayStation when I was in Middle School, I loved going to the Farmers Market and Funko Land to get games for my Sega and NES. Now I buy games mostly digitally and online for my PS4 and Switch, but I miss the hunt for hidden gems.
Went to buybacks yesterday and made them take the $247.99 tag off of Yoshi's island. The dude said "yeah we've had a problem with people just looking on eBay and what not and putting the first price they see on it."

My first was a Master System for Christmas in 86/87? and I still have it. Then in 89 I got a Genesis with Altered Beast for Christmas.
I got my Genesis for X-mass back in '93 too. But I got the model 1 with Sonic 1 and a mail-in offer for a free copy of Sonic 2.

My Model 1 Genesis bundled with Streets of Rage 2 (the greatest beat-em-up game of all time in the history of mankind) is worth *infinity dollars* in childhood memories and nostalgia currency. I would NEVER SELL THEM.
I was at retro con last year( same venue as too many games) and I got 2 model 2s and one had a Sega CD attached. 3 controllers and all cables. 60 bucks.

I know exactly where he got his info. He looked up Genesis on EBAY and found the first person who had one listed for 2k and said thats how much its worth. It's like those articles saying your old disney VHS tapes are worth thousands. They see all these people asking for $1000 a pop but don't bother looking to see how much theyve actually sold for. I can list my booger on ebay for $1000, that doesn't mean someone is gonna pay that for it.

Nicely Put! I am a tad curious though RGT85... I have a model 1 High Def Graphics Genesis, A Boxed 32X with everything including RF shields, A Boxed Model 1 Sega Cd that works and is complete as well with RF shields. I habe the tower complete and together and to top the Sunday, I have the HD Retrovision cable coming out of the 32X for Display with some badass audio out cabkes coming from the Sega Cd for audio. I have two of the Sega 6 button controllers and one of the OG red and black 3 button Genesis controllers. I would be curious to know what that Sega setup is worth. 😁

As a kid, the Sega Genesis didn't have enough greatness to turn me into a fan. I got it for Christmas one year. But I didn't like it nearly as much as my Nintendo consoles. I only had moderate fun in the original Sonic The Hedgehog. Never cared for the sequels enough to even play them through. Even the Genesis controller SUCKS compared to the Super NES controller. Too much plastic, and too big of buttons (and awkwardly placed). I even attempted to pawn in my Sega Genesis (model 2) and Sega CD consoles (complete in box) one time. But the pawn shop didn't want them for some reason. They acted like they were garbage. And I'm SO glad they didn't want them. That would have been one of my biggest video game regrets that I would have never stopped regretting. I respect the Sega Genesis now. I even started collecting games for it. However, I still only played through 2 games on it. Sonic The Hedgehog and that god-awful Mortal Kombat, where the fighters sound like dogs barking.
