      @@onetwo6039 If there is a big crash, this won't cause it, there are really only three serious players in the console market, al of them are very well established and all of this other stuff is really just a niche market. Vs. the 80s when the market in general wasn't really established at all and consumers really didn't understand navigating all of the various consoles and crap. Also they had to compete a lot more directly with computers instead of that being it's own semi-separate market like it is today.

    The Amico is a great idea if you remove the motion controls bs, remove the lights, remove the screen (replace it with buttons and insert) and allow pixel art games on it.

      MarquisDeSang I agree. As close to the original with a small team of developers to make new games in that retro aesthetic would get my $100. if the controllers were identical to the old Intellivision (wired) and it had wi fi capabilities to possibly add to your library digitally, that would work. Modernizing Intellivision to the point that it's not anything close to the original is this things downfall and Talarico should be conscious of that.

      Earthworm Jiménez, your name is fantastic, I have to say. Talking of our favourite worm, I really am quite sad that the new earthworm jim sequel that looks like a sort of rayman origins treatment but for the old classic 2D earthworm jim games, is exclusive to this dumb ass console. Nobody is gonna be able to play an earthworm jim game with controllers that are entirely touch screen. Touch screen controls are the number one worst thing about trying to play a game on a phone or a tablet, hence why people serious about emulation like myself use a Bluetooth game pad. Or get a device like the GPD XD plus, which I love to bits
      But yeah. They're like "you know the worst thing about mobile games? Let's bring that over to our console even though it's a home console and the main benefit of being a home console is that we can have actual physical buttons on our controllers, nah screw that, touchscreens are futuristic and totally Rad, man"
      You absolutely cannot play earthworm jim 1 and 2 with touchscreen controls. Literally nobody can. You need very fast twitch reactions to things like enemies or obstacles
      So this new earthworm jim game that looks bloody fantastic, well it doesn't matter, only 2 dozen people will ever buy this console and so be one of the rare few to be able to play the new game, but then none of them will be able to enjoy it because you can ONLY use touch screen controls. Again, on a HOME CONSOLE
      It's absolutely nuts. A new earthworm jim game like the classics would sell like hotcakes, look at the success of streets of rage 4, for example. But this new earthworm jim game is exclusive to this stupid ass console that only 2 dozen people will buy (and 20 people from that 2 dozen will just be youtubers who only bought it so they could tear it down in a highly critical review, very few people will buy it because they are just gamers who want a new console).
      How hard would it be to port the new EJ game to all the consoles and PC? But no, they wanna make it exclusive to the worst controlling console that will have ever existed. Literally worse than the atari 5200.
      As you can tell I'm a bit upset by this. I just wanna play the new EJ game. But I never will, unless some bright spark works out how to emulate this Amico console on pc or android devices.

    The Evercade is the "modern retro" system that's coming out of all of this in great condition and with a nice future. The Evercade portable has been a niche success to the point where the Evercade VS console is coming out and more and more Evercade cartridges keep coming out. I love the Evercade. Not only is it well priced and has collections of classic retro games from the 80's and 90's, but as Ian said, Evercade also has collections of modern indie games that play just like classic 8-bit / 16-bit games. Xenocrisis for Evercade is awesome. Xeno Crisis is a game originally released during 2019 for the Sega Genesis (yeah, a Sega Genesis release during 2019) and I love playing it on the Evercade (Xeno Crisis was released in a combo pack with another modern 16-bit indie game called Tanglewood on Evercade).
    Evercade's Indie Heroes collection, which comes out soon, is really cool since it has some really cool modern indie games on it (I'm looking forward to Deadeus... it's an "M rated" horror game done in an 8-bit Black and white Gameboy style. From what I've been hearing, it's very effective in it's horror and there is a damn good reason why it has a "M" rating, despite looking like a Final Fantasy Legend / Pokemon Gameboy game). Evercade is pretty cool and has pretty much taken over that "niche console" market that the new Atari VCS will never have, the Coleco Chameleon never had since it was never released, and the Intellivision Amico will most likely NOT get (honestly, the Amico is going to get screwed over since it's price point makes it where people with $300 in their pocket are either going to buy a Switch if they want the best family friendly modern console or they are going to spend $100 to $130 on an Evercade portable or Evercade VS console (both of which come with several pack in games) if they want a cheaper option that gives them a retro feeling. Competition wise, Amico is stuck in a very bad space between the Switch and Evercade).

    • @sonshinegamers
      @sonshinegamers 3 роки тому +1

      I recently just discovered the Evercade's VS (I knew of the handheld). They have a great price and strategy in place. Not only do they have affordable physical cartridges with multiple games but they also have the indie games as you stated with more cartridges on the way. The ironic thing is that you can play the Intellivision pack and get those games without even having to invest in an Amiico. It is unfortunate, but Amiico travelled into the Switch/Xbox Series S territory that they wanted no part of and it seems that they were making things up as they went along. There is only so far you can go on the name of Tommy Tallorico and mobile looking Intellivision games.

    • @sloppynyuszi
      @sloppynyuszi 3 роки тому +1

      The evercade releasing these indie games on a modern cartridge is the most promising thing about it. Some of those are on steam and Nintendo Eshop, but having a physical modern cartridge scratches the retro itch better, and to be honest, I rather this than finding a 20 year old mega drive and hoping it works. Seeing the struggles people had finding a specific mega drive model to get Paprium to work looks like a nightmare.

    I never understood why they released a poly mega on Amazon's Japanese storefront but never releases it on the American storefront where it's marketed to. I remember asking them this on either Twitter, and all I did was like my response.

    • @TheLandofObscusion
      @TheLandofObscusion 3 роки тому +2

      It's because Walmart was meant to be the Polymega's exclusive American seller, like how Amazon was for Japan. Unfortunately, Walmart royally screwed them over, which is one of the larger factors that has lead to Playmaji's absolute silence for months. Had Walmart not screwed them over, they might have actually had a small launch by the end of 2020, at the very least, which would have helped give them some good will, since the people who actually do have the product (either via the beta testers or the scant few that actually got their pre-orders shipped) have had generally good things to say about it. Now it's currently stuck in limbo as a product without any sort of major distribution partner, combined with whatever other problems the company is having. It's just so weird.

      if the polymega achieves accurate Saturn and N64 emulation then it justifies its existence.

  • @IanSane

    I really never understood why these things were consoles. Why does Intellivision need it's own console to deliver new content in a retro style? Why not just publish games on existing platforms with the INTV branding and have them be games in the style of the old system? That would tickle the nostalgia bone with new content but would stand a real chance of finding an audience.
    An alternative idea, which would have a market but not as much of one as a pure software idea, is to make modern systems like companies like Analogue do that play old games. Old Atari systems that work well as becoming less common and they're RF only and don't connect to modern TVs. Make a modern system that connects by HDMI and accepts the old cartridges and that's a product with some sort of a market. I don't think it's that big but old school Atari collectors would want that. You could probably also re-release some of the old carts, too. This idea would probably be a huge hit for Nintendo and less for Atari but the concept has some legs.

The games were way too primitive to provoke any sense of emotion that I feel the need to revisit. I think the big mistake that these projects have made is misunderstanding the nature of nostalgia in this context. If there is nostalgia, it is for the retro *games*, and there already plenty of ways to play those games. These projects seem to think that there is a pent up nostalgia for retro *brands*, and that a certain retro nameplate on a new, unproven, unfamiliar and probably very quickly unsupported piece of hardware will lead to success.

The controller concepts intrigue me, but they need to intrigue developers more than the consumers. We all saw how underutilized the Wii and WiiU’s controllers were. Controllers can have all the bells and whistles in the world, but they mean nothing if developers don’t care to make use of them with their games.

Now I see they are putting very few games with motion controls, touchpad controls and speaker/ mic as if they are passing the torch and leaving a savy developer to tap into it.

    Even beyond the retro consoles themselves, Hyperkin and Retro-Bit have really stepped up their game in the clone console market, and AtGames' Arcade Legends systems offer a mix of official and unofficial gaming potential.
    Then we have the Evercade, various Namco and Atari compilations already on modern platforms. Hell, Evercade could corner the market by putting out carts with just the hard-to-find, expensive 8/16-bit games. However, the fake-retro stuff, that's not going to last long. The best way one of these systems would exist in the market is as a cheap-ish platform that would allow for easy access to physical games from indies, along with retro compilations. None of this is gonna fly if it costs twice as much as a Pi 4/400.

    I'm just sad that the new Earthworm Jim game that's a 2D platformer like the classic ones, is an exclusive for this Amico thing. What a genuine tragedy. About 2 dozen people in the world will buy that console and get to play the new earthworm jim, except of course it'll be terrible because they made the stupid ass decision to have the controllers be entirely touch screen. Jesus christ. So the 2 dozen people who get to play it will never be able to beat it cos of how dumb the controllers are
    Earthworm Jim is a super popular series, it should be released on every console and on PC. But it never will. This isn't a timed exclusive. It's literally being developed only for this stupid ass console that literally nobody will buy. No Switch version. No PlayStation or xbox version. Jesus

    IF all 3rd party developers with an extensive history of retro games; would release all the games in their back catalog in competent collections (with excellent/not poor emulation) on current consoles; then we could finally stop seeing these things pop up in the market. I would want it on any console, but especially on the Nintendo Switch; as it has a plethora of controller options that are modeled to look like past consoles (thanks to 8bitdo and other companies; and not just from Nintendo systems). The Switch is plenty powerful enough to emulate Sega Saturn, N64 Dreamcast, PS1-3, Gamecube, Xbox original, Arcade 2017-below and anything under that; with the hybrid model for both handheld and home console play options. I know such a thing would take time; but I would be willing to wait if they made an official statement; saying that this is their eventual goal (in the same way Hamster Corp is doing with the Arcade Archives line). This alone would kill the Chinese handheld, Pandora box Market (I know I wouldn't care to buy those anymore) and if Nintendo made this a main selling point of the Switch line; that would appeal to many retro enthusiasts (lol, imagine if another side effect of DLSS on the upcoming Switch revision; was perfect image replication of retro games in an aspect ration that seems identical to actual hardware). Just some thoughts really and a missed opportunity if this wasn't done.

  • @firefox1033

    Personally I think there's plenty of room for new retro consoles. As long as they generally follow these 5 rules. 1 put the games of the console your initiating on said console. That means if your making an Atari inspired console put Atari games on it. 2 if you put any other games on said console they should be either homebrew games. Or remakes/different versions of games. For example including both the 2600 version of Pacman along with the arcade version. Or putting DuckTales Remastered on a NES inspired console. 3 any brand new games you might wanna put on said console needs to be a game that fits with it's vibe. An example of this would be like putting Shantae on a SNES based console. Since it feels alot like the SNES version of Aladdin. 4 don't make your console too powerful. Nobody cares if your Atari based console runs Crysis. All your doing is making your console more expensive. 5 stop trying to get exclusive games. If you want exclusive games then make a new console. Instead of something that is based/inspired by an old one.

    The whole idea of these emulation based consoles is just plain stupid these days with stuff like the Raspberry Pi & whatnot available. There is truly no reason for anyone to buy something like these, unless they are simply unwilling to download ROMS off the internet & insist on paying for something that they could easily be getting for free.
    Their choice, but seems rather foolish if you ask me. The selection is going to be rather limited with these official emulation consoles anyway because they have to get licensing rights for those games in order to sell them. It's just not a good solution.

    The mini consoles are one thing, but the rest of these weird things seem pointless. That’s a problem when you’re trying to sell shit. I think these are actually perfectly retro. They are facsimiles of something from the past, with games that try to capture the spirit of that era. That’s different than things that play just original games from the era

  • @skins4thewin
    @skins4thewin 3 роки тому

    Xenocrisis and Tanglewood are not modern games. They are new retro games. Either way, they are most definitely retro & are not what I think anyone could consider "modern". They specifically run on old hardware and were developed for that very purpose.

    I’m glad that the Jaguar molds are no longer in the wrong hands, but I actually did like the idea of repurposing them.
    Jaguar fans would probably appreciate more color options, and you could use it for other systems. The Famicom, another victim of Nintendo’s shortsighted use of bromine, could fit in there as well. The Jaguar’s cartridge slot is wide enough to accommodate a Famicom game, though you might have to use a ribbon cable to relocate the connector, since it sits further back on a Jaguar board. A 2600 clone might be feasible, and it’d be fitting to keep it in the family, but I don’t know if there is demand for another one. Hyperkin and other companies already offer them, HDMI to boot.

    All those retro consoles are dead now cause basically these are companies that more or less don't exist anymore. So once the gen xers are done. That's it. Nes, master sys, SNES, etc. Those console makers still more or less exist and have actual sway on the market so you will always be able to get that itch scratched without these kind of people doing it.
