Yakuza Kiwami 1: A Questrospective Retrospective

  • Doing things a little differently today. Yakuza Kiwami is the remake of the original Yakuza, renewed and refreshed for the audience the series pulled in with Yakuza 0, and for longtime fans. But with time comes age, and with age comes wisdom. Kiwami means Extreme, and playing Yakuza Kiwami has brought with it memories of this video series' beginnings- and my own feelings from when I set out to make it. For me, Kiwami is a little more- just a little more- than a remake of a beloved classic. It's a retrospective into my own past, my journey since, and a sense of closure I've been chasing for the last three years.

    From Wikipedia:
Yakuza Kiwami is an action-adventure video game developed by Sega. It is a remake of Yakuza, the first game in the Yakuza series, originally released on Sony's PlayStation 2. Yakuza Kiwami was released on PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 in Japan on January 21, 2016, and on PlayStation 4 in Europe and North America on August 29, 2017. It was also ported for Microsoft Windows worldwide on Steam on February 19, 2019, and was released on Xbox One on April 21, 2020.
Like the original PlayStation 2 game, Yakuza Kiwami explores the life of a man named Kazuma Kiryu who is demoted from his clan after taking the blame for his boss's murder. After a decade in prison, Kiryu searches for his old friends who have gone missing. The remake adds extra elements to the story, including Akira Nishikiyama's corruption during Kiryu's imprisonment and constant struggles between Kiryu and his rival Goro Majima. The gameplay was improved to resemble the prequel Yakuza 0, adding more depth to the fighting system.
Sega had ideas to remake the first Yakuza game in 2015 as part of the series' 10th anniversary but were unsure about developing due to their team focused on making Yakuza 0. Following the success of Yakuza 0, Sega started working on the remake of the first game and aimed to add new elements to the story while trying to make it more enjoyable than the original game. The game was well received, earning positive sales. Critics praised the simplicity of the gameplay but were divided by the handling of the storyline and pacing. Yakuza Kiwami was followed up by Yakuza 6: The Song of Life later in 2016, and another remake based on the second game titled Yakuza Kiwami 2 was also released in 2018.

The best part of Kiwami 1 was the new story content with Nishikiyama. It shows how he was suffering during Kiryu’s time in prison and how it literally broke him. The scenes were so sad that the voice actor of Nishiki stopped reading scripts for a while after recording for the game.
Fun fact, you know that new protagonist, Ichiban Kasuga has some similarities to Nishiki and he even has a similar tattoo to him. Also, they are both voiced by the same actor.

    • @GCVazquez

I'm so happy Nishiki's voice actor is now voicing the protagonist. It's a great choice; the actor is talented AND narratively it's a nice piece of metatextual information.

I'll repeat one of the best comments I've ever read:
The fact that one can play "Tonight" in Kiwami 1, straight from the beginning, means that even if Nishiki is still alive, Kiryu recognizes that his friend is already gone for good and mourns him as if he was already dead.

    • @GCVazquez
      @GCVazquez  2 роки тому +11

I like this! I also think "Tonight" can more specifically be just about the one moment in Kiryu's life where everything changed, and wishing he could go back and stop it from happening. It's very personal and not as one-dimensional as some of the other Yakuza songs lol

Look, I like Kiwami, just it's kind of a shame we'll probably never get the original two games ported properly to PC. I actually played the original versions AFTER I played Kiwami and I still loved them; they're a bit less bombastic and more quaint, which I personally prefer. Plus just for the sake of art preservation I think they deserve proper PC ports, for their historical significance to series and gaming as a medium.

Excellent video. Working in Kiwami's revision of what the original Yakuza was with you're own personal experience with making this series was an ingenious approach. While Kiwami itself may not have fixed all the issues Yakuza had, I feel the additions it made definitely added to the experience. This is most apparent to those who played Zero, which is why I wouldn't recommend starting with Kiwami.

i only played 0, k1 and k2. the two biggest moments i felt where the pain as majima left in yak 0, and the smallest detail in kiryuus eyes at the end of k1.
i almost bawled my eyes out after seeing the pain. the gritted brows just break down, as he comes to accept the life now void of friends and family. it hit hard after spending 2 games with this new kiryuu, one who never changed, even during deaths, always kept the same face.
that moment helped me fall in love with what the games can produce, even if the story itself is basic and has flaws, that small emotional detail and how it affects kiryuu in k2 is what makes me love him

When Kiwami was first localized a common thing I feel I was hearing was distaste for Nishikiyama, and how silly it was to try to add more depth to him through 0 and Kiwami. Also, some of it was probably joking on Pat's part, but just kind of writing off 0 Nishiki knowing where he was going.
Maybe it's because I started with 0, but Nishiki always felt like my bro. And I did Yakuza 1 before Kiwami came out, so I felt the added cutscenes did a lot to show not that Kiryu being gone was a mask-off moment for Nishiki, but how life put him into a box where he couldn't become anything but what he became.
I think a part of me still misses him, and I didn't even have him for that long.

I was surprised at how much thought was put into them. Combat can be a bit jarring to get used to but once you get good it feels good…

We aren't even at Y6 yet and I feel like we're at the end and it feels grand :)
On to Kiwami, the game that introduced this fuckin' sick series to me :D (and still one of my all time favorites in it)
6:00- on Y1 to YK, I'm stoked for this analysis in particular, just as I found your Y1 video interesting, getting to actually hear your take on K and how it's evolved from Y1 is something I'm just generally stoked for here.
15:00- on K1 game design potentially aleniating newcomers- Dang if I can't see that happening but hadn't considered it in the slightest. Interestin'.
    16:50- Modest GC :)
19:30- Tiger drop sfx is the good stuff~
21:15- On YK story lacking the oomph of later entries- DON'T YOU DRAG RUBBER BULLETS INTO OTHER YAKUZA GAMES, lmao, that made me smile
post-closing-addition: Overall on this video, I really enjoy the angle you approached it with. Awkward to say as this took on some personal levels and you hardly owe anyone that level of insight, but you took that risk with grace and it tied in to this ongoing story impressively. Also, big fan of your parallel take on Majima Everywhere, it was a light in a video that held a lot of melancholy up til then (though not exclusively), I'm glad you had friends to drag you out :)
    Closing-
I had a lot less to say this time than usual but I want to emphasize the reasoning was a good one.
I'll be transparent in that I generally put off watching your content unless I'm in the right state of mind to take in a meaningful look at a title. It isn't how I've always treated your work, no one comes at a new creator with a pre-conceived notion of "how" to take in their work.
It's just what happened over the years as your style has evolved and your work has become a hell of a lot better at both communicating fun and interesting analysis AND tacking on a human element that often allows others to see themselves in the story etc.
    Ah, the reason.
This one was touching. And as a stranger enjoying a personal telling of someone's life growing and the self reflection they experienced through this portion of the project, I hardly felt at terms to talk half as much.
I know I have a big habit of leaving my comments optimistic as hell and flowery and praising or what have you- or annoying, I do both as it turns out ;)
But I say this sincerely, as I'd argue the rest of my words were as well, you've gotten really good at that. At attaching humanity in all its random elements to your work. I know that's a nothing compliment, it's biased on my own enjoyment and experiences and it carries little explanation as to "what" has improved, though honestly, I'd argue it's the part of your work that's intrinsically You.
But I ain't gonna ramble much further, I felt myself getting a little too sincere and that won't do.
I'm glad YK gave you a chance to reflect, and I hope you like what you saw in your growth.
I wish ya the best out there, and here's to the next 3 years allowing yet more growth that leaves you a more complete version of yourself than ever thought possible prior! Or however ya'd put it, lol. Have a good one~

    Here I am again.
    1) When I was playing Yakuza 5, around that part when Kiryu says to Saejima that he never felt lonely in prison because he knew his family would be waiting for him outside, the weight of it finally rained down on me... Kiryu lost everything he held dear in Yakuza 1, and in one fell swoop. His adoptive father, his childhood sweetheart and his sworn brother. Bang. But he kept going because there were people who still believed in him, and who needed him (Haruka). Kiryu never stops being kind of a lonely dude, someone who keeps his pain to himself and tries to remedy it by moving forward no matter what, physically and spiritually, but... ultimately, his relationships and the warmth he gathers from them is what makes him go on. Even when he bleeds inside, Kiryu is still Kiryu.
    2) On the other hand, Nishiki was far more of an emotionally open guy. For better or worse, he wears his heart on his sleeve, as Y0 shows us. Nishiki cries, screams, flirts, jokes around, suffers for the whole world to see. If he can't live without you, he will freaking tell you that, as he did tell to Kiryu. And that is the very same guy who also loses everyone he holds dear AND his self-respect. While the world crumbles down around him, the yakuza world kicks him around, chews him, spits him out, and the bloody mess of emotional abandonment, paranoia, loneliness and general frustration which remains has to find something to make itself go on. But Nishiki can't be Kiryu. Nishiki is Nishiki. The biggest caveat of being an emotional person is that, without people to keep you tethered to reality... you just rot. And poor Akira Nishikiyama rotted like few men do.
    3) And there we go *again* with the themes of duality that define Yakuza as a series! It's not always as straightforward as in the first game, but it's certainly always there.
Anyways, GC... keep doing what you do, man. Writing is hard, but you have been making it seem magistrally easy with your constant evolution in that regard. I only wish there were more reviewers around UA-cam willing to engage with video games on such a deep emotional level, instead of treating them just as power fantasies or some such. Cheers.

I don't know many people who would be willing to open up about themselves like you do. I'm glad that the Yakuza series has provided you with an outlet to express your feelings. This is, to me, what makes it great. It's rare for any medium to make us feel so invested as to relate to a character and see ourselves in them. You should be proud of yourself for accomplishing such growth. I'm proud of you. Some people never manage to get out of their shell. I won't claim to know you, but I can tell you've tried and succeeded. That's a feat worthy of recognition. Well done Sir ❤️

This was my first Yakuza game so I can relate to ur friend. I powered through it though because I loved everything else about the game. The experience made me gravitate to the dragon engine in kiwami2 more then most fans of the series and also not care that much for the fighting engine in 0.

im not going to lie, i love the majima everywhere system, and i feel like why it gets a lot of shit is because once you finish the DoD tree, it gives no more rewards, it gives no cash, like shakedown, and the infamous scene in Kiwami

    • @GCVazquez
      @GCVazquez  2 роки тому

Yeah I think the final impression at gives players is that sorta annoying vibe since towards the end you really wanna avoid Majima to wrap up what you're doing. And since that's the last thing you remember about it, that tends to be the takeaway.

Great vid. The Majima Everywhere System is honestly one of my favourite things in all of video games not just Yakuza. I started Yakuza with 0 with Kiwami as my second and it always disappointed me that, those were the two games that played the best and I'd never get that great feel of the style switching again. Whenever I get asked where to start with Yakuza I always recommend 0 with the caveat that that means you'll be starting with the best one and you'll never really hit that high again. I'd never suggest Kiwami and aside from not actually playing it I feel like I can't really recommend starting with a PS2 game when if you set 1 and 2 aside you can get all the others on the same console or PC

The original 1 and 2 have hd remasters that look pretty good and have a few quality of life changes iirc, but they've never been released outside of Japan! You have to import a copy. I might do a small mention to them somewhere at some point!

I have been playing this series in chronological order in the definitive editions of each entry throughout this year (which meant both Kiwami remakes and the remaster collection after starting with 0) and currently on Like a Dragon. Kiwami is one I appreciate but couldn't love as much as I wanted to. Its faithfulness to the originals script has some weirdness (like showing quick scenes of just the characters walking to a location that felt unnecessary as well as lacking impact in side character deaths due to lack of screen time). The Kiwami regen mechanic still baffles me that they added it to the combat (making fights too tedious early on). Thankfully the Majima Everywhere, Nishiki-yama, Pocket Circuit Racing, and bond between Kiryu and Haruka made up for those problems. I would say this game is tied in 5th place with Yakuza 3 (one of my favorite story but clunky combat plus far too defensive AI). Great job with this review! Can't wait for more down the road when it's at your own convenience!

I definitely think if anything, Kiwami is *too* faithful to the original, which is what makes it so specifically for people who've played the original to me. I think putting it next to 3 is pretty fair! They're very comparable for some reason. Thank you for the kind words, and your thoughts!

Kiwami was my first yakuza game, although it felt rough being so slow and weak at the beginning, i thought that i just needed to git gud, and get good i did, i guess it just depends on what kind of player you are, and how you adapt to certain kind of gameplay

Kiwami's combat system can be amazing and terrible weirdly enough. It's extremely awkward and tedious in the beginning, but one of my favorites during NG+. Also, after you mastered the combat system, the boss fights become very fun, specially when you see someone like DanteDevil12 having a go at it. The Akai brothers fight went from being one of my least favorite in the game to top 5 worthy on replays.

Yakuza Kiwami is a mixed bag for me. Among its best aspects are - as you so rightfully pointed out - the more technical combat and the excellent extra scenes detailing Nishikiyama's downfall; but I still have mixed feelings on the Majima Everywhere system. I get that it serves as a bridge between Majima's portrayal in the main story and the "Kazuma's goofy pal" characterisation he has in later games but it doesn't quite work for me. Especially since Majima is so consistently villainous in what little screentime he had in the original PS2-game. One detail that stood out to me was a change in the cutscene leading up to the batting cage fight where he beats one of his own men, the PS2 original implies that he killed him whereas Kiwami suggest that he "only" knocked him out.

    • @GCVazquez
      @GCVazquez  2 роки тому +1

Yeah it's got that weird thing where it's trying to make it make sense, but honestly it might have been better to keep Majima sort of mostly evil in 1. I think the angle would have worked in this sense that maybe Majima came away from his experiences in 0 a little burnt by the world, and reconnecting with Kiryu might have been the way he regains some of his humanity. Naturally they probably didn't have a whole lot of time on their hands to make Kiwami, so it makes sense they tried to make it work in the way they did.

When you compare this to the original, you can really see how much the team's design values have changed.
Sub stories are the biggest. Ones that had massive efforts had fully animated cutscenes, and a lot of them were taken seriously. Kiwami had every sub story have very cheap animations
One that really shows it is the missing medicine one. The original was on an invisible timer. If you toom your time, a different NPC will spawn. Telling you that there was a man here begging for his life wanting anyone to find his heart medication. It was a sombreing moment. You messed up. You didnt take him seriously. You took you time doing whatever. Then kiwami changed it so that the ending was whacky. Cause he forgets it again and Kiryu chases him in a goofy way.

  • @ahuman5192

Kiwami in my eyes is like a good game but a very flawed remake
It loses a lot of charm the original had and adds a lot of stuff that I didn't like such as Majima Everywhere, that bug minigame, needlessly extending substories, and more and it also loses the amazing atmosphere the original had and while music is very subjective I really liked the originals music more the dirty hard guitar tones mixed with funky beats was awesome but Kiwami used a lot of electric stuff that kinda ruins the vibe of the song
There are some things I like from it like is the Nishikiyama cutscenes and how more bosses got their own theme and the extra part with the ring
All in all while Kiwami 1 is a good and fun game it just doesn't hold up well in my eyes as a remake
