Show Us Your Junk! Ep. 34 - Rob Schnapf (Mant Studio) | EarthQuaker Devices

- Throughout February, EQD's "Show Us Your Junk" video series is showcasing the "Rock Block." It's an actual city block in Los Angeles' Silver Lake neighborhood that houses the studios of veteran producers, mixers, and musicians Aaron Espinoza (The Ship), Rob Schnapf (Mant Sound Studios), and Dave Trumfio (King Size Sound Labs). Also included is the Rock Block "OG" Manny Nieto, whose Suplex Audio has since moved to a new location.
Like his Rock Block buddies, Rob Schnapf has a vast amount of audio junk in his Mant Studio. More than two decades in, Rob and his former production partner Tom Rothrock have their names in the credits of records of all kinds. From beloved artists including the late singer-songwriter Elliot Smith to Guided By Voices, desert rock legends Kyuss, soul goddess Mavis Staples and R&B organ icon Booker T. Jones with whom Rob won two Grammys. Rob and Tom also helped unleash Beck's "Loser" onto an unsuspecting world through their label Bong Load Custom Records and worked with Beck on Mellow Gold and Odelay.
Though Rob says he's an "anti-gear fetishist," he sure has a lot of it at Mant. His stash includes unique guitars, classic mics, newer boutique-made mics and outboard gear, and a Pickle Steel (see, it's kind of a steel guitar thingamajam with a...well, just watch it), making its world recording debut in this episode.
Once you've absorbed Rob's gear, head on over to the EQD Blog for Rob's Talk About Your Junk. Get more details about his days interning at the famed Record Plant's tiny studio, the Micro Plant, how he adapts his recording style and process to each artist and how his "one song at a time" recording method helps keep everyone focused in the studio. www.earthquakerdevices.com/bl...

Lmao this guy is fantastic! Great video, hope he keeps having a succesful career!
We hope so too! thanks
😂😂😂😂😂 my friend this is the man responsible for three of the greatest debut albums ever. His success is carved in stone. I mean have you ever sat down and listen to rubberneck by the toadies or the self-titled foo fighters albums???
Love the Elliott stories, thanks EQD
🥰 thanks for hanging out
As someone who runs a small studio this series is a joy to behold. Very inspirational and informative. Thank you Earthquaker
Our pleasure! thanks for watchin!
It's really moving to see Rob get emotional when talking about Elliott Smith.
These videos are great, I really enjoy when people show off their gear (junk) and their studios, if they have them. Does anyone else do videos like this? You guys rock!
everyone does but ours are the best. Subscribe and you won't regert it. I mean regreat it. I mean... regret it!
Of course @earthquakerdevices are the best, but Warren Huart’s studio tours on the ‘Produce Like A Pro’ channel and Andrew Masters ‘Epic Home Studio Tour’ series are also great.
I really love this guy. and this is the perfect way to work with music...
that's cause you know what's up.
Figure 8 was such an important record to me. Getting to know Elliott through Rob (and Larry Crane) is such a gift. Love this studio tour. 💕
Happy to present this to you. Thanks for watching. Subscribe and smile!
Does anyone else sit with a note pad and Reverb open on their phone when watching these? One of the best series on gear.
this is hands down the best one of the series. rob seems very down to earth, yet also very inspiring.
I love this whole series, but this one is way up there and one of the best. Thank you so much for making these
yay thanks! our pleasure!
Definitely my favorite.
Brilliant. I always thought it was the '64 Jaguar on Pretty Pimpin', surprised to learn it was a Tele! Great episode.
The guitar chair is revolutionary
it changed everything
I LOVE this series, so , so much, thanks for making the world a better place Earthquaker...
Glad you enjoy it!
I've obsessively watched every episode of this series. It brings me a lot of joy, especially the technical nerdy stuff. Thank you guys for documenting these legendary spaces.
Comments like this make it all worth it. Thanks for spending your time watching our stuff!
@@EarthQuakerDevices I'm always curious what systems these guys use for digital conversion. Going from a 24 channel console into pro-tools etc. Love the work you're doing!
I’ve seen about a dozen of these episodes and this is the best. Rob, is well paced and thoughtful. And he’s so damn cool.
What an episode, Rob has been an inspiration for years, really cool to finally see his space and such a humble and funny human being.
WOW awesome he is, Rob Rocks Big, verry impresive, definitly yet my favorite 'show us your junk' video, thx for making it
heck yeah, thanks for watching it!
Totally worth the wait!! That rack is LOADED
🤘🏻⚡️⚡️🤘🏻
it's pretty awesome right?
@@EarthQuakerDevices absolutely amazing stuff
I first heard of Rob from seeing his name in the liner notes of a Beck 7" on Bong Load Records back in the mid 90's...I was recording friends on a cassette boom box, dreaming of having a studio. So rad to see this all these years later!
I love the fact that these videos demonstrate that studios are what people make them not all the things you're 'meant' to have. It's shitting on the idea that you need all of the top end stuff (I mean a lot of them obviously do) to make a record.
the best records ever made were recorded straight to turf grass with LOTS of fertilizer. Thanks for watching and being a long time subscriber!
@@EarthQuakerDevices absolutely. I was going to say something similar. Same with producers. You don't need a big name to make an amazing record. I believe the strong, quirky, interseting characters of these studios oozes through onto their records
Thanks for all your pedals, innovation and content. Love it all.
It took me awhile to figure it out...
But dude has his shades on top of
his head, under his hat XP
Thought it was a hearing aid for the first 30 mins or so hahaha
This is the guy you want behind the desk love the approach , problem solving at an unbelievable creative level .. 👍👍👍👋
One of the best series on musical UA-cam
heck yeah thanks!
Recording drums at a small local studio then working on the rest of the tracks in my basement was how we recorded our 3 song demo as teens, it was great!
He seems like a cool and down to earth guy. The longer I am in music, the more it seems like people with the real skill are as humble as can be
Love this series. It would be cool if you guys did one with Machines with Magnets in Province.
what a legend - exactly the kinda guy you'd wanna create with
Rob is awesome!! What killer gear.
yeah dude
He did a amazing job on "La Musica negra"
Thanks so much for this series! I look forward to these episodes and it makes my day when a new one is available. The last month has been awesome.
Our pleasure! Very happy to hear that you have enjoyed the series!🥰
This is my Ed Sullivan story about Loser. I was playing metal till I heard that song. Then I started pissing off my friends coming up with rap rock riffs. Such an awesome story. Loser changed my journey, a lot.
thanks again EQD for another installment of my favorite show!? i’ll be looking forward to the next one. 🤘
thanks for caring about what we are tryin' to do!
This is by far my favorite episode you’ve ever done, I wanna be this guys friend!
Best advice ever: don't borrow money. Buy what you can afford as you have the cash. And I'll add: make do with what you got...be creative.
Absolutely💯
But this guy has loads of gear. It's not a cheap investment
@@user-yg4dr8po4p He didn't buy it all at the same time
"only buy what you can afford" is the best advice I've ever heard. Thanks for all the Elliott Smith details, that was really interesting. Saw him at Trees in Dallas TX on that tour playing your 330
With the Ampeg Gemini?
I'm in a band called "Kick and the Hug" and we recorded at KSL next to Rob's studio. He came over and hung out a bit, loaned us that '64 / '65 Tele, and Charlie McCarthy as well. Such a cool & super nice guy, that Rob Schnapf! THANKS ROB!!! :-D
Love this series! Please come them coming.
Awesome series. Much respect Rob, Thank you Earthquaker
you got it! thank for being here!
I'm addicted to this series.
subscribe for more! thanks for your suppport!
The Poison Live story is amazing.
pretty much!
I know right? Why is no one talking about that haha, mixing in Motorhead crowd is such a ‘fuck you’ move on so many levels
That….and also that he has his sunglasses on under his hat
Dude the Beck history lesson gave me chills man! That studio is sacred. :) ✊🏽☮️
love this episode, i've watched it like 4 times
Fantastic! Keep them coming!
Thanks! Will do!
He recorded The Toadies "Rubberneck".. enuff said.🤘🏻
Fucking fantastic -- unreal gear collection -- Rob seems like a great dude and been a part of some serious music history.
classic!
That hour was so short, please keep these videos coming!
OK OK!
Taking Notes! Gotta get me that 57 badness!
Hey Manny! Do you know happen to know what Rob is referring to about the "Crimson Handle" and "Orange & Yellow - two different flavors" regarding the SM57 modification?
Agreed! You could probably just buy a cheapie knock off and do the same mod. Hmm.
Tommy Boy reference on the trucker hat? Nice
Trivia: the pic of Rob when he talks about being in college was taken in Toerag Studios in London when they had the Calrec console that the White Stripes’ Elephant was recorded on.
kool!
That’s not me
"If you're left-handed, you're already f*****"...Yup
been loving this series!
Can’t be overstated enough, Billy Zoom is a treasure
You really know your gear..and elliott Smith. Wow. Beyond good
As a huge Elliott Smith fan I have become a huge Rob fan over the years naturally. The amp for LA he mentions.. I always thought the guitar tone on that track was so hot and searing, in a good way. So great getting info about Elliott's 330 obsession. Elliott was _so_ good... in every aspect. The most complete songwriter of all time. I love any insider Elliott info, thanks for talking about him Rob! FABOTH is my favourite album of all time, so good work... You tried to ride things in and out cos Elliott liked that... This was so nice to hear wow. Suicide Machine is a great song, but good call! and thank God you figured the King;s Crossin mix out, maybe my favourite song ever.
Damn, that was awesome and inspiring.
I had not heard of Rob Schnapf before this video and yet thoroughly enjoyed hearing his story.
it's pretty captivating huh?
Loving this series. And Rob's energy is very cool.
Thanks for watchin’ our vids!
Not that it matters that much or that anyone cares but I was the guy designing those flyers, securing distribution & promoting to radio. Sorry I do not have any junk to share :-D
I don’t think it matters
@@robschnapf2135😆great interview 🙃
Hope you doing alright
Awesome finale to the trilogy 🤘🏻
the quadlogy! there's four of 'em!
Doh 🤦🏼
B&W 801's! And ProAc's too! Nice to see a rock and roll type studio that isn't just using JBL's. I worked for a Hifi shop that sold BMW speaker's, I sold a couple of pairs of 802's back in the 80's and I owned a couple different models of their less expensive bookshelf speakers. Ever heard BMW 808's? I heard those once at the CES show in Vegas, being driven by Threshold monoblock amplifiers. Much bigger than 801's, and huge dynamic range. I have a pair of ProAc Studio Ones at home that are in need of refoaming....
Love British hifi
Topper! Thanx!!
Thanks for sharing Rob!
Man, I love these.
we love making them! thanks!
@@EarthQuakerDevices thanks for making them!
Elliot
Brilliant!
I love this series so much, but I’ve never been as excited as seeing the amp Elliott used for LA that’s one of my favorite studio recordings of his by far I love that song and tone. Awesome.
Incredible!
Awesome! Thanks EQD
This was amazing..
Very nice gear! I spotted a synth that I have also: The Korg Mini Korg-700, the first ever synthesizer of Korg. You see it standing on top of that organ.
He seems like such a nice dude
he is!
Just now discovering this series, and it's awesome! Very very interesting. Thanks for uploading.
This was insanely cool. Mellow Gold changed everything for me. Thanks!
great episode, loved all the elliott stuff - thanks for sharing!
This is wonderful.
I've always thought that Mellow Gold is one of the most interestingly recorded albums that I've heard. I'm forty six and that album made a big impact on me about thirty years ago.
To stumble across the "behind the scenes" story has been a delight. Thank you!
🥹❤️
Total! Same age here too! I think ?
THIS IS GOLDEN!!!!!
Schnapf is the king!
I never knew I needed a slouch chair. Now I do.
Love this video. I’m inspired to say the least. Had a Shure vocal master I sold and I regret it after being reminded just how good that reverb is
best episode yet! truly comp: dont jusrt buy sht you dont use, save up and buy what you can afford and need..
Killer studio...old school dude who really knows his JUNK...! This was really cool what a great personality..cool guy man 😁☮️💚🎸🤘
I think the term you're searching for is LEGEND! lol Cheers
Guitar repairman Ted Woodford in Canada just rebuilt one of those same Silvertone electric archtops with the Gibson pickups a couple weeks ago. The guy is an awesome craftsman, does fantastic work on acoustic guitars, broken Gibson headstocks, and so on. Look for his twoodfrd channel (note the spelling) on UA-cam.
Okay
this is GOLD!!!
99.999999% pure
The place you show when he talks about the recording studio at the physics department (10:29) is actually Liam Watsons Toe Rag Studio.. Give the credits to the great man who deserves it!
very inspiring very creative very funny very technical very insightful. i would be stoked to hang with this guy! and now i can. great video.
A++
Glad you enjoyed it!
so good, thanks for the extensive video. and for letting him get so many stories in!
You bet!
Love to see Blastroom in Ft. Collins. You guys rule. Thanks.
Such a legend! I would've loved to hear some 'In Reverie' stories, probably one of his most underrated records.
Super dooper cool! Also love the stealth glasses under the hat ;)
Beautiful Junk.
amazing. thankyou.
Thanks very much for being here!
Love this series great earthshaking documentaries folks 👍
Glad you enjoy it!
This is awesome. Totally underrated guy. Had a hand in some great records by Saves The Day (Stay What You Are), Osker (Idle Will Kill), Foo Fighters, and many more. 🤘🏼After watching this I wanna be friends with him lol.
Great video. Thanks!
You bet!
INSANE !!!
so good it should be outlawed "pretty much"
Great video Rob
Freakin’ rad - thanks so much for sharing!
our pleasure
Now this is really interesting!!
The sunglasses under his hat is the real power move
Optimizing space
@@robschnapf2135 dude it took me 1/2 the video to figure out what that "ear piece" was XP
What an amazing sympathic guy!
Rob, hit me up if you wanna sell anything in the junk room. Need more junk.
