This might be my favorite in the series yet, and I haven't even finished it. It's really interesting to hear about the gear restrictions in nz and how they got around them/made it work. Thanks for everything, EQD team!
Having heard them live and sound exactly like the record, I was super curious about their gear. This is an amazing video!! Thanks so much for doing this. They’re one of my favorite bands
Hands down, this is the most invaluable advice for anyone feeling their way through recording their own music that I've seen on YT. Kudos to Team Sports & EQD for sharing this wisdom.
Just want to say, this was a joy to watch from start to finish. I loved seeing him working on mixing, and it was SO cool hearing him talk about the actual songs that various things were used on. I discovered The Beths randomly on Spotify about three weeks ago and they’ve become my favorite band. This guy is an absolute enigma.
Are The Beths the best band on the planet right now? I think you could make an argument for "Yes, The Beths are the best band on the planet right now."
This band quickly became one of my favorites when I discovered them last year. They tick all the boxes: songwriting, vocals, musicianship, tone-and all of it holds up spectacularly when they play live
So glad to have stumbled on this video! The Beths are one of my fav bands, and Liz and Jonathan are phenomenal guitar players! Seeing the gear and some of the processes around Jump Rope Gazers is just *chef kiss*
Just getting into The Beths and realizing that Jonathan is a lot like the Elliot Easton of the band; just ripping these absolutely mind-bending solos in the middle of an otherwise airtight perfect pop song. We need more brains like this in the world.
Seems like a really nice guy. I like his down-to-earth approach to recording. He seems to really know what he likes and it doesn’t have to be expensive to sound great. Love it!
This was a great great video. Knew of the beths and listened to their records but learning about jonathans process and space inspires me and I have a new appreciation for their music.
I can not put into words how much i love "Show Us Your Junk" episodes! thank you so much for this awesome content for us nerds! Discovered The Beths through this video, killller band
Have always heard about this band but never listened. I've watched this whole thing and what a fantastic musical mind. Loved the tour of the gear and looking forward to discovering the greatness of this band.
Jonathan, your gear and knowledge is very inspirational! Love your band and appreciate it even more so now after seeing your setup! Best of luck and thanks for sharing. Cheers!
It's inspiring and very cool hearing the various recording techniques and gear used to achieve the sound. Thanks, Jonathan, for sharing your creative process with us.
Great show. I used to take my portastudio to my buddy's shows and record those off the board. Memories... I DID digitize them last year, 25 years later. Please do it. You have history on those tapes.
I just bought a replica of my portastudio 414 from my teens and just digitised all my tapes last week. So glad I did. Everyone should archive their 4 track tapes!
Good point regarding Reverb; with guitar especially, you can't overestimate the impact it can have on the feel and the way it sits in the mix.I like my Springs and Plates, but I think of them always AS an EFFECT, like Chorus, Flange, or anything else, and sometimes, Delay just works better.
That tascam 48 is gorgeous. I used a 38 to record the first "The Smiles and Frowns" album and it was great but I missed the balanced outs on the 48 badly at times. Thanks for the video!
Love this video and keep coming back to it. Think someone in a previous Show Us Your Junk may have shown a Johnson Millennium 150 amp. If someone remembers which one or if I'm wrong let me know.
I love this idea. The ‘show us your junk videos’ are awesome and important. Thanks for putting the spotlight on the artists and inner workings of the creative process. I love all the pedals Earthquaker Devices makes and look forward to more groundbreaking pedals in the future. If I could own them all, I would.
Scotland Fan .. loving the studio and more so the albums u have all produced.. brilliant work and LOVE the sound u have created AWESOME 🏴🏴♥️🎸🥁🥳
I got one of those Marantz mics, it's actually a SuperScope EC-9P, Superscope is the company that owned Marantz in the 80's or whatever. I used it on acoustic guitar.
I wonder how that acoustic spring thing would interact with a semi hollow, I think it might sound cool to record something direct in and acoustic at the same time with it
Boss DS-1 forever, I JUST got my earthquaker Hizumitas fuzz pedal 5 mins before I watched the video. Jon always lights up when you talk gear. He used this very specific RAT back in 2018. Made in Japan maybe?cant remember.
Now get him to do his live rig! They showed a little but I know he uses an H9 and other things. Love hearing how it was made. Would love an insight into how it's recreated.
This was awesome! new Zealand is wild, no American imports! wild! down here in Miami i think the weirdest DIY guy is this Cuban dude named Gran Hechicero! insane psyched out stuff! plays wacked out instruments from Cuba
Now I'm on the hunt for a Shure FP42. I'm not coming up with much online, but if anyone stumbles across one, or has ideas for anything else that might get me close to this vibe / technique, I'd be very happy to hear it. Thanks for these great videos! You guys rule!
Thanks very much for checking out this episode of Show Us Your Junk! Keep an eye out for *_more_* soon!
This might be my favorite in the series yet, and I haven't even finished it. It's really interesting to hear about the gear restrictions in nz and how they got around them/made it work. Thanks for everything, EQD team!
This guy is amazing. I want to be his friend.
What a fun vid!
This dude is legit. I'm recording my next album in New Zealand
Having heard them live and sound exactly like the record, I was super curious about their gear. This is an amazing video!! Thanks so much for doing this. They’re one of my favorite bands
This looks like such a fun, chill music room
I love his vibe sm. Such a cool chill studio that’s all about making music and experimenting
definitely!
was thinking the same thing.
Hands down, this is the most invaluable advice for anyone feeling their way through recording their own music that I've seen on YT. Kudos to Team Sports & EQD for sharing this wisdom.
That demo he gave with the Shure compressor on the drums was illuminating!
This is a gem of a production. Love The Beths

Nice! Glad you discovered them and enjoyed the episode, Jonathan is the best!❤️
Are The Beths the best band on the planet right now? I think you could make an argument for "Yes, The Beths are the best band on the planet right now."
Stephen…you are correct.
I second this argument
So hot right now 🔥
A friend just recommended to me "Expert in a Dying Field" and I am officially hooked!
Agreed
This band quickly became one of my favorites when I discovered them last year. They tick all the boxes: songwriting, vocals, musicianship, tone-and all of it holds up spectacularly when they play live

Glad you enjoyed it! The Beths are the best!
20:29 "It looks like it's going to be awesome, but it's not awesome. It's really bad!" 70% of all vintage gear.
Just getting into The Beths and realizing that Jonathan is a lot like the Elliot Easton of the band; just ripping these absolutely mind-bending solos in the middle of an otherwise airtight perfect pop song. We need more brains like this in the world.
Agreed! Glad you enjoyed :)
Seems like a really nice guy. I like his down-to-earth approach to recording. He seems to really know what he likes and it doesn’t have to be expensive to sound great. Love it!
Couldn't agree more!
I love this band. They're such great song writers. I also love how you can see the gear nerddom in the video for Expert in a Dying Field.
that walk-by wipe at 13:35 was genius and subtle
This is one of my fav youtube vids ever
Yes!🤘
They have absolutely mastered *that* sound.
More Beths. ALWAYS more Beths in the mix. Best band out there.
This was a great great video. Knew of the beths and listened to their records but learning about jonathans process and space inspires me and I have a new appreciation for their music.

Trust me. "future me hates me" is your new favorite album.
Have always heard about this band but never listened. I've watched this whole thing and what a fantastic musical mind. Loved the tour of the gear and looking forward to discovering the greatness of this band.
What a talented guy. I’d have a beer with him for sure!
Wonderful video, thank you! I really like the Beths and it is so interesting to hear Jonathan describe his recording philosophy.

I love this series, and I LOVE The Beths!
Such a good watch! Kroad is definitely where it's at!
I also started looking into the shure-fp42 straight away 👀
I LOVE THE BETHS
That tascam 48 is gorgeous. I used a 38 to record the first "The Smiles and Frowns" album and it was great but I missed the balanced outs on the 48 badly at times. Thanks for the video!
this man has a great pedal collection in a sweet jam room situated between venues to play at night.. livin the dream!!!
I may have gotten a Shure FP42 just because of this! Jonathan seems like a great guy. What an inspiring video.
Love this video and keep coming back to it. Think someone in a previous Show Us Your Junk may have shown a Johnson Millennium 150 amp. If someone remembers which one or if I'm wrong let me know.
That’s music invention there. Well done and looking up the beths ASAP
I love your music, and I can't wait to hear your next album.
Late to the party. Just discovered The Beths two days ago. (Rick Beato)
Love seeing how they capture their amazing sound.
The Beths ♥️

It was worth the wait between episodes. That was terrific.
I saw The Beths at the Bowl in New Plymouth and they were brilliant!! It's been heaps o fun seeing how he works. Very cool!
Best series on this channel. Love seeing strange gear.

If you love what you do, you’ll never work a day in your life. This guy knows his shit and loves it.
Fantastic video. Never heard of them before this, but love everything about their approach
The Yellow-Shirt-Walk-by-Dissolve was invigorating.
the solo in "I'm Not Getting Excited" is so cool

Is Will Yip a potential canidate for this series? Would be rad!

Oh UA-cam, here you go introducing me to another great band! Y’all rock!
Fun and Inspiring!
this is like a flight of the conchords spinoff episode
more like tim and eric cinco recording studio.
I own one of those Marantz SuperScope's in great condition, have the case and also the vocal head attachment as well. Love those 70's electrets!
Nice job John!
Excellent episode, loved it!
Seems like a lovely, gentle soul
I wonder how that acoustic spring thing would interact with a semi hollow, I think it might sound cool to record something direct in and acoustic at the same time with it
Making more of these guys? I'm always checking back for new ones
You bet! More to come, stay tuned 😎
Really awesome
Thank you! Cheers!

Enjoy that Hizu!!
I look forward to the day Jon’s obsession truly goes down the synth path….
Ok good I’m not the only one w unhealthy michealphone obsession
Do a Junk episode with James Murphy!
Nice transition at 13:34
I watched the KEXP video and I immediately wanted that Les Paul. :)
Sounds amazing right 😩🔥
@@EarthQuakerDevices Yeah the tone in those videos is fantastic. My daughter told me to check them out and now the whole damn family likes them.
Really enjoyed this ⚡️⚡️
Now get him to do his live rig!
They showed a little but I know he uses an H9 and other things. Love hearing how it was made. Would love an insight into how it's recreated.
New Zealand Christopher Guest!
He's got a few of those super cheap joyo pedals. Good to see I'm at the same level in some ways
Cool! I so love The Beths! Liz's board has a lot of dirt in it! And is that a Biyang Reverb??
welp, just bought one of those shure mixers!
What’s the name of the band mentioned at 8:20ish? I’ve gone back but still can’t quite catch it
Hans Pucket
SO HAPPY THIS IS BACK (Show Us Your Junk! that is )
Awww he said that drawing was a treasure 🎸❤️jealous haha

New Show Us Your Junk video ≥ whatever else I had planned to do today
Now I'm on the hunt for a Shure FP42. I'm not coming up with much online, but if anyone stumbles across one, or has ideas for anything else that might get me close to this vibe / technique, I'd be very happy to hear it.
Thanks for these great videos! You guys rule!
they have been showing up on ebay at medium inflated prices for the last couple weeks, usually one or two a week, but they go quick.
Quick Google search came up with a lot of them
So sick!
Great band!
The Treasure at 15:50 is my favourite part
“Pretty junk” would make a good side project name
He really does make K road sound nice
It isn’t
