- Join us on an inspiring journey with Ivan Julian, a founding member of 70s punk legends Richard Hell and the Voidoids. This new episode of Show Us Your Junk features Ivan’s studio in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, Super Giraffe Sound.
We had a blast touring Super Giraffe Sound and learning how Ivan got his start in the New York punk scene in the mid to late 70s, and how his long career performing and touring eventually led him to start producing bands and building his own studio.
At 19, Ivan moved to London where he joined the R&B group The Foundations, whom he toured with throughout the U.K. and Europe. In 1977, he came to New York City, where he helped found Richard Hell and the Voidoids. Their debut LP “Blank Generation” is considered a quintessential punk album. After parting ways in 1980 Ivan formed other groups including The Outsets and Lovelies.
Ivan has worked with many other artists throughout his career including The Clash, Matthew Sweet, and has produced records for notable bands such as Hunx and his Punx and The Fleshtones.
Ivan shares his extensive knowledge about vintage analog studio gear, and has a knack for tweaking and building his own gear. His eclectic collection and taste align well with his approach to production.
Ivan also discusses his difficult battle with cancer, and how the music community rallied around him and supported his recovery, infusing him with optimism and inspiring him to produce and write as much music as he can.

Absolutely! So humble and super talented
Wish I had gone to Julian with the original recordings from Linoleum Blownapart featured in the playlist of my channel
He seems more in tune with where I was going in 1991 & again in 2008
🙌

This guy is cool as hell.
💯
That was amazing, okay x
Thank you!
That looks like a studio where you'd leave with a much better record than the one you envisioned walking in....
Yep. Most definitely an inviting creative space 🙌
💙
Pretty sure that’s a Shahi Baaja, not a Bulbul Tarang. Main difference is the Shahi Baaja has the 10 sympathetic harp strings but they’re definitely closely related
Ahh, thats interesting!
@@EarthQuakerDevices Not as interesting as Ivan and his studio though, let's be honest 💜
WRONG!
Correct.
I always think of The Byrd's when I hear 12 strings.
Isaac’s a big lad
Anyone know who that "Coexist" song at the beginning of this is?
It was pointed out by one of the commenters already, but that is a Shahi Baaja and not a Bulbul Tarang. Bulbul Tarang translates as "waves of nightingales" not just "nightingales." That Shahi Baaja looks like a Paloma brand, from India, not made by the company that made the Echoplex.
Appreciate the insight, very interesting instruments
@@EarthQuakerDevices I use an Arpanoid with my shahi baaja for Terry Riley zones 👍👍
Tube-testing at the drug store? You *BETCHA* !! Come the day of a big ball game or hockey game, my dad would send me with the tubes to the drug store to test them out and make sure we wouldn't have any obstacles to good reception and a clear picture.
He looks like the dude from casino guitars
Tubes😅😍
You must do a show about Ny HED studio ( Matt Verta Ray ) !!!
Damnit no comments? How can I find one of those string instruments?
