It's all to do with society, not only were there thousands of great bands from the US in the 90's, there were thousands of great bands from the UK, Canada, Australia and most of the English speaking world.. (I say English speaking world as I tend to like songs in English) These days, i'm finding young rock bands lacking a certain something and everything beyond that is manufactured rubbish for teen consumption... Or the real problem... Which is most likely, i'm just getting old..
The band explained that the lyrics for "Jesus Christ Pose" concern the exploitation of religion for personal benefit. The song is a criticism of how public figures use religion (particularly the image of Jesus Christ) to portray themselves as being "better" than others, or as "martyrs". Chris Cornell specifically mentioned Jane's Addiction's frontman Perry Farrell as an influence on the song, explaining, "It became fashionable to be the sort of persecuted-deity guy. In an interview with Spin magazine in 1992, Cornell explained the term "Jesus Christ Pose":
I don`t know about being persecuted guy, being cool. Being a saved one is great though. Just sharing a message that was shared with me. Eternity matters. THis is how to be saved by GOd the Father/Jesus for eternity. GOspel of Grace. Faith plus nothing outside of this, for salvation. Believe sincerely from the heart, Jesus died on the cross for your sins, was buried and raised from the dead, and you will be saved. ANd nothing to maintain it. GOd/Jesus/Holy SPirit. will take care of the rest, after you sincerely believe. Romans 10;9-10 and 1 COrinthians 15 1-4 from the Word of God/Bible. Taught by our apostle in this age of Grace. Paul. What Chris Cornell isn't aware of though is that "Jesus Christ" is not the Messiah's name. Jesus is a pagan name from Greece, Iesous, which means "Hail Zeus". Anything with "sus" at the end means "Zeus". Any time someone says Jesus, they are hailing a false pagan "god", not the Messiah. Yahshua HaMashiach is the real name for our Master. Furthermore, a look into the Aramaic of scripture (the original language of The Father- not Greek as many believe) will tell us Yahshua was not crucified on a "cross", nor was He executed (the proper terminology) in that "pose" that Chris Cornell is talking about here, but Yahshua was executed on a stake with his hands together above his head and a nail was driven through BOTH wrists, not hands WRISTS. Same goes with the feet... a nail driven through both feet, not ankles, FEET. So Chris Cornell's song is an example of ignorance and Satan's deception even on his personal self and what he thought of as truth. I bet Chris Cornell didn't even truly understand a word of scripture, he probably knew what most of the world knows about man-made religions and false doctrines of men. This is why The Father gave us His OTIOT. The "bible" was not written in Greek or Latin, The Father's Name is not "God", our Messiah's name is not "Jesus", or "Lord". These are all lies from Satan that men made. I feel really sad for people who don't know The Word. I hope Chris Cornell got right with The Father before he left this earth but I don't know nor can I say anything about that. @@shahidullah5983 before the media artists begun doing Christs references all the time just as a "renegade" pose because It seemed cool. While others like Chris Cornell always had that soul of the real expression throught the music... For example, "Show me how to live", in Audioslave, is a yell to be identified with that screams "how is it possible, that im suppoused to be done by something, that wants me to be diferent from what im made with, and in the circumstances im made in. If there's that something somewhere, i want to know how shall i proceed, because i feel this nail inside my head and It makes me believe that there's a meaning in everything, but nothing seems to go anywhere"... Now that is a piece of art expression that reflects all those questioning, suffer and conflicted feelings... And then there's a band that just makes the singer dress like Jesus and headbang for example or recite stuff bout god and/or Satan, or maybe even just T-Pose... For example. Which apparently became quite popular in the rock scenary. Anyhow, dont take me wrong, some of them I really enjoy as well, and I find them genuinly cool and enterteining. Like: Misfits, Marilyn Manson, Slipknot, Ghost B.C,... But Chris Cornell, I find transcending.

@Lord Aäkenrez "Grunge" is not a musical style - it is a musical counter culture that channels the Pacific North West identity (i don't claim to hold the truth but it's my definition)
@Lord Aäkenrez i'm not - i'm not even American in fact - but i watched several documentaries especially Hype! The word grunge is mistakenly used. Btw the Seattle big 4 basically have obvious musical differencies that prooves it, but they still are grunge
@Lord of Misanthropy Soundgarden is grunge. Their sound was too dirty for metal and too heavy for punk. Mark Arm came up with that term because his band Green River lead the wave of bands that were forming in Seattle. Mark knew his band influenced Seattle along with The Melvins creating a subculture surrounding a dirty/heavy sound. Even Soundgarden's first 2 EPs Screaming Life& Fopp were mostly punk.
One of most menacing intros ever. Badmotorfinger was the first album I bought along with Nevermind and Apocalypse 91 after I was discharged from the Marines so long ago. This one stands the test of time.
SoundGarden is one of those bands that with RARELY exceptions ALL the members are top level musicians, just like the Beatles or PinkFloyd, where all the members were talented and multifaceted. The bassist (Ben Shepherd) is a monster, the drummer (Matt Cameron) is a killer, the guitarist (Kim Thayil) is breathtaking in the tuning and complexity of the riffs, and Cornell sings like a God of Olympus, as well as playing very well, it's a band that has everything in terms of music, composition, chords, sonority, it's like a classical music show where the Maestro is rock n roll.
This was the first song I heard sung by Chris. It was on either MTV or Much Music and I remember being both frightened by the visuals and the lyrics but when it was over I wanted to hear it again. RIP Chris
Stuart Yes! This was the first Soundgarden I heard, (it was on MTV2/M2) before I even knew or cared who they were I remember just being mesmerized by the video. Mostly because of Chris though. He changed my taste in men before I even got to appreciate his music.
THE most fabulous song and video from Soundgarden! Everything is just right. It's a perfect chaos, the 90s color scheme, Chris voice, the drive through out the whole song. And wonderfully metal in all the overload of grunge. AND.. Chris himself.. I cry, smile and delight, all at the same time. Jesus Christ, I miss him...
This fucking song.. I remember the first time listening to it back in the day (I'm 40) and during the lead up in the beginning the thought of "I'm about to get my ass kicked" crossed my mind... It didn't disappoint the moment Chris shredded into it with those fucking lungs of his.... This was the definitive Soundgarden song..

What a voice, what a riff, what a drumming... what a freaking masterpiece of a song! When the mytical Soundgarden decided to experiment with thrash metal... R.I.P. Chris !!!
it's BETTER than most thrash b/c most thrash just sounds like a drum machine SPED UP. THIS tune has aggressive rhythms that are not a 1, 2, 1, 2, 1, 2, sameness! More exciting!
We love you Chris. You are missed!!! You provided such thought evoking music. I hope you, Chester and Layne are scream singing up wherever we go next! You guys are the best ❤ forever legends and forever missed ❤
MPCB11 23 late reply, but look up Chris's interview about this song where he states it's about Jane's Addiction's frontman. The guy posting above you is right. Unless you're talking about your subjective interpretation
I remember reading an interview where the band stated that the main message behind the song was the hypocrisy/sanctimony of certain religious people. It's pretty obvious that's what the song is about when you read the lyrics. And although the song was somewhat influenced by Jane's Addiction's frontman (Perry Farrell) it, again, had a more general meaning.
pillsareyummy Perry Farrell is Jewish. Is there on shred of evidence that he was a Christian in the early 90s? I doubt it, his music is far more sacrilegious than this song (3 Days)
HonkIfYouLoveHonking I stated that the song (based on interviews with the band as well as the lyrics) is about the hypocrisy/sanctimony of certain religious people. Judaism is a religion just like Christianity, I don't know what your point was?
I remember when Bad Motor Finger came out, I had on cassette and I just kept turning it over and over in the car, blew me away. The whole Grunge era was a blessing to rock n' roll.
Not only this song but another track off of this album named Slaves & Bulldozers indeed portray the awesomeness and the essence of Chris Cornell's vocal range so perfectly.
R.I.P Chris Cornell, you were the voice of my youth, whether it be solo, Soundgarden, Temple of the Dog or Audioslave. Your voice decended from the heavens and will never be replicated. Thank you for the memories.

The song isn't about Jesus; he wrote it after seeing a televangelist posing like christ on the cross, begging for money and talking down to the audience as if he were some Saint.
breakingguitars Look, I read it in an article in the 90's, before they broke up. He specifically stated seeing a televangelist holding his hands up. I live in Seattle, I bought the album when it came out, saw them before they were huge, etc - this isn't me quoting a Wikipedia page.

But Chris Cornell, I find transcending.

didn't say singer, said vocalist. in terms of vocals he was the best, vocal range, power, agility, resonance.
but go ahead i'm interested, who are your top 2?
My favorite singer of all time is Layne Staley... I even got the same tattoo that he had for remembrance.
NARKISDUDE he was not the top.. Alx rose and Dave mustane were the dominant 90s vocal forces...
Mustaine never had a powerful voice to begin with, and Rose was maybe the top in terms of success and popularity, but not pure vocal prowess

Most metal song of the grunge era. What a psychadelic video, too.
You havent listened to Beyond the Wheel?

This song really shows the extent of Chris's vocal range. Fucking amazing.
