It's all to do with society, not only were there thousands of great bands from the US in the 90's, there were thousands of great bands from the UK, Canada, Australia and most of the English speaking world.. (I say English speaking world as I tend to like songs in English) These days, i'm finding young rock bands lacking a certain something and everything beyond that is manufactured rubbish for teen consumption... @@matthopper9637 i think chris meant that even if you're a celebrity no matter if you're rich or poor you're still the same as everybody when death knocks on your door you are not some godly figure who needs to be worshipped whether you're dead or alive.
The band explained that the lyrics for "Jesus Christ Pose" concern the exploitation of religion for personal benefit. The song is a criticism of how public figures use religion (particularly the image of Jesus Christ) to portray themselves as being "better" than others, or as "martyrs". Chris Cornell specifically mentioned Jane's Addiction's frontman Perry Farrell as an influence on the song, explaining, "It became fashionable to be the sort of persecuted-deity guy. In an interview with Spin magazine in 1992, Cornell explained the term "Jesus Christ Pose":

What Chris Cornell isn't aware of though is that "Jesus Christ" is not the Messiah's name. Jesus is a pagan name from Greece, Iesous, which means "Hail Zeus". Anything with "sus" at the end means "Zeus". Any time someone says Jesus, they are hailing a false pagan "god", not the Messiah. Yahshua HaMashiach is the real name for our Master. Furthermore, a look into the Aramaic of scripture (the original language of The Father- not Greek as many believe) will tell us Yahshua was not crucified on a "cross", nor was He executed (the proper terminology) in that "pose" that Chris Cornell is talking about here, but Yahshua was executed on a stake with his hands together above his head and a nail was driven through BOTH wrists, not hands WRISTS. Same goes with the feet... a nail driven through both feet, not ankles, FEET. So Chris Cornell's song is an example of ignorance and Satan's deception even on his personal self and what he thought of as truth. I bet Chris Cornell didn't even truly understand a word of scripture, he probably knew what most of the world knows about man-made religions and false doctrines of men. I hope Chris Cornell got right with The Father before he left this earth but I don't know nor can I say anything about that. I dj on the high school radio, i played all grunge , metal and punk bands during our lunch. Friggen rocked back then in 91 and many , still shakes the walls of reality. Soundgarden and alice in chain where so perfectly loud and clean soundscapes . Those productions stand out from a lot of artist through the years just for the insane quality of sound. Add to that the mtv videos and no wonder they are the icons they are now. My 90s teen souvenirs live in these sound or vice versa. I hear this im teleported back
This was the first song I heard sung by Chris. It was on either MTV or Much Music and I remember being both frightened by the visuals and the lyrics but when it was over I wanted to hear it again. RIP Chris
Stuart Yes! This was the first Soundgarden I heard, (it was on MTV2/M2) before I even knew or cared who they were I remember just being mesmerized by the video. Mostly because of Chris though. He changed my taste in men before I even got to appreciate his music.
One of most menacing intros ever. Badmotorfinger was the first album I bought along with Nevermind and Apocalypse 91 after I was discharged from the Marines so long ago. This one stands the test of time.
This is the song that made me a Soundgarden fan. It was the first time I was ever exposed to Soundgarden and it was the fall of 1991 and I was watching the video on MuchMusic up here in Canada and was in awe with this singers amazing voice. I was thinking that this was the coolest front man I'd ever seen for a band. I went out and bought the Badmotorfinger cassette and here we are almost 31 years later and they have been my favorite band ever since. RIP Chris Cornell you beautiful soul.
One of my favorite Soundgarden songs, it was more metal than alternative and could hold its own with bands like Metallica, Megadeth, Anthrax, Slayer and Sepultura. They would always play Soundgarden on Headbangers Ball back in the day even though they’re not a metal band. Love the rest of the album, such a classic, R.I.P. Chris.
@@ricardovalderrama7895 i somewhat agree with you, man. Soundgarden and AIC were way too heavy to be rock, if i were to put them in a genre i'd say alternative metal, AIC had some sludge elements in their music too around the Tripod era

It wouldn't pain me more to bury you rich Than to bury you poor In your Jesus Christ pose (poor) Poor In your Jesus Christ pose
This fucking song.. I remember the first time listening to it back in the day (I'm 40) and during the lead up in the beginning the thought of "I'm about to get my ass kicked" crossed my mind... It didn't disappoint the moment Chris shredded into it with those fucking lungs of his.... This was the definitive Soundgarden song..
I love the optical effect that starts around 3:37. On TVs at the time, if it was the only light source in the room, it had the pseudo-3D effect of looking like they were hammering through your TV screen.
@@travis2950 Considering what this song is about, I wouldn’t be offended. He’s calling out public figures for pretending to be prosecuted like Christ. Or literally doing a “Jesus Christ Pose.”
What a voice, what a riff, what a drumming... what a freaking masterpiece of a song! When the mytical Soundgarden decided to experiment with thrash metal... R.I.P. Chris !!!
it's BETTER than most thrash b/c most thrash just sounds like a drum machine SPED UP. THIS tune has aggressive rhythms that are not a 1, 2, 1, 2, 1, 2, sameness! More exciting!
R.I.P Chris Cornell, you were the voice of my youth, whether it be solo, Soundgarden, Temple of the Dog or Audioslave. Your voice decended from the heavens and will never be replicated. Thank you for the memories.
@@shahidullah5983 before the media artists begun doing Christs references all the time just as a "renegade" pose because It seemed cool. While others like Chris Cornell always had that soul of the real expression throught the music... For example, "Show me how to live", in Audioslave, is a yell to be identified with that screams "how is it possible, that im suppoused to be done by something, that wants me to be diferent from what im made with, and in the circumstances im made in. If there's that something somewhere, i want to know how shall i proceed, because i feel this nail inside my head and It makes me believe that there's a meaning in everything, but nothing seems to go anywhere"... Now that is a piece of art expression that reflects all those questioning, suffer and conflicted feelings... And then there's a band that just makes the singer dress like Jesus and headbang for example or recite stuff bout god and/or Satan, or maybe even just T-Pose... For example. Which apparently became quite popular in the rock scenary. Anyhow, dont take me wrong, some of them I really enjoy as well, and I find them genuinly cool and enterteining. Like: Misfits, Marilyn Manson, Slipknot, Ghost B.C,... But Chris Cornell, I find transcending.
Very raw. Takes me back.Getting older sucks, but then so does the alternative. I wish time could stand still, but then would be insanity. I guess we're just passing through, raising and falling. RIP and thanks.
@@CinematicMaj I do also hate it when people over use under/overrated however in this case I think it's kinda fair, like Ben shepherd is not talked about that much compared to the rest of the band dispite him being a massive part of their sound

I've always had difficulty waking up in the morning, except when this has come on the radio. It's guaranteed to get me fully wide awake! RIP Chris, Never forget you.
I'm not really a Soundgarden fan, but this is one of the best rock songs laid down on tape. Thunderous drums, off-kilter riffs, thick bass! Those piercing guitar glissando stabs just hit you in the gut, and that rhythmic section at 4:20 is to die for. So fucking intense.
@Lord Aäkenrez "Grunge" is not a musical style - it is a musical counter culture that channels the Pacific North West identity (i don't claim to hold the truth but it's my definition)
@Lord Aäkenrez i'm not - i'm not even American in fact - but i watched several documentaries especially Hype! The word grunge is mistakenly used. Btw the Seattle big 4 basically have obvious musical differencies that prooves it, but they still are grunge
@Lord of Misanthropy Soundgarden is grunge. Their sound was too dirty for metal and too heavy for punk. Mark Arm came up with that term because his band Green River lead the wave of bands that were forming in Seattle. Mark knew his band influenced Seattle along with The Melvins creating a subculture surrounding a dirty/heavy sound. Even Soundgarden's first 2 EPs Screaming Life& Fopp were mostly punk.
FUCKING AWESOME!!! 💣❤ Today's music💩 doesn't even compare. Chris we miss you more every day.. Still hard to believe your not with us anymore. I remember when Bad Motor Finger came out, I had on cassette and I just kept turning it over and over in the car, blew me away. The whole Grunge era was a blessing to rock n' roll.
This record is absolutely on fire. I may say so - it is not only their best effort but is one of the best albums that has ever been recorded. At least in the universe of rock related music.
Ben and Matt’s rhythms on this track are so clean and tight. This is how you produce a hard track like this, where the drums and bass aren’t drowning out all of Kim’s subtle guitar nuances

"Yes officer, I was just minding my own business when out of nowhere, Matt Cameron from Soundgarden starts beating the living fuck out of a drum set. I hear this im teleported back
Every Grunge music video director:
"Okay, guys, just walk, stare forward, and look pensive. We'll rotate the camera and shake it around a lot."
Hip hop groups got the fish-eye lens. Harder bands got strobe lights in a small metal shed.
you are driving the nails:-)))
Yep and it was enough
Great :)
LMFAO
This was the first song I heard sung by Chris. It was on either MTV or Much Music and I remember being both frightened by the visuals and the lyrics but when it was over I wanted to hear it again. RIP Chris
Stuart Yes! This was the first Soundgarden I heard, (it was on MTV2/M2) before I even knew or cared who they were I remember just being mesmerized by the video. Mostly because of Chris though. He changed my taste in men before I even got to appreciate his music.
Chris is undeniably good looking in this video!
Miyala Peters hell yeah...I would
even straight men can't look at him right :P
Chris was good looking 24/7
4:20 That riff, man...it´s one of the best riffs i´ve ever listened to.
And that drumming underneath!! Matt Cameron with those perfect ride accents.
@@rbnh9827 Yeah, the drums are fixing perfectly
Such a masterpiece!
Really drives the nail home STRIKE AND STRIKE AND STRIKE AND STRIKE AND STRIKE...
It's a clear PARODY of the main riff from Andrew Lloyd Weber's JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR.
Also Red Hot Chilli Peppers ‘borrowed it” for By the Way.
His vocals, his lyrics, his message...his face, his body. Ugh, Chris Cornell will forever be my favorite male musician to come out of the 90's.
Best hard rock singer EVER! Dio, Halford, Plant, Gillan (Ian or Ray with an e), Ozzy, Tate, Rogers, Mercury.... All fantastic but NO!
One of most menacing intros ever. Badmotorfinger was the first album I bought along with Nevermind and Apocalypse 91 after I was discharged from the Marines so long ago. This one stands the test of time.
Semper Fi bro I use to jam to this in Oki during field day, and getting drunk and belligerent in the smoke pit after

A buddy who's played guitar for decades was always astonished that someone would have come up with that and made that the "riff" for a song!

This bassist and drummer do not get enough credit!!
Matt gets his props, Ben had always been over looked.
@@patrickrussell6558 Yep. Ben's input, I've heard, was a major component of their sound during their heyday. Badmotor and Super' are classics.
Says who?? I have witnessed much praise heaped upon all the boys in SG...each in their own right.
every single instrument in this song including chris's voice is so fucking amaZing, but I agree the bassline is fucking intense
Ben is the one that came with the main riff and nobody gives him the love that he deserves
Chris.
Agreed
because it is metal.
Soundgarden is a metal band and Alice in Chains too. Grunge is just a fashion. Every seattle band has its own musical style.
@@ricardovalderrama7895 i somewhat agree with you, man. Soundgarden and AIC were way too heavy to be rock, if i were to put them in a genre i'd say alternative metal, AIC had some sludge elements in their music too around the Tripod era

Rest In Peace Chris No one sings like you anymore
His vocals were out of this world!
Everyones hyping the vocals but remember to notice the awsome drum performance too!
+Ylis Vauhdis the guitar riffs are great too
just an intense display of musicianship through and through.
+Ylis Vauhdis Is that Jason Sutter?
Those drums were the truth
The whole thing is amazing
i love you so much chris cornell, you always make me feel better. also bless soundgarden in general, love u guys💙
Chris Cornell is literally singing this song into my soul. The emotion he puts in is infectious. RIP
Yes I agree Chris Cornell a awesome singer and great emotion in the song.May Chris Cornell RIP
Bill Platt BEST. COMMENT. EVER!!
Very well said. His voice was so powerful and versatile. In my fourties too, I can clearly remember the time I saw this on MTV and stared in awe !
Epic comment.
my morning ride to work song
Period. Still is. Well Said Bill
I love the optical effect that starts around 3:37. On TVs at the time, if it was the only light source in the room, it had the pseudo-3D effect of looking like they were hammering through your TV screen.

More exciting!
his voice = golden
4 octave vocals out of this world
Yes and Matthew Cameron my Husband is the Cutest Person Alive
R.I.P Chris Cornell, you were the voice of my youth, whether it be solo, Soundgarden, Temple of the Dog or Audioslave. Your voice decended from the heavens and will never be replicated. Thank you for the memories.
Chris was so underrated. He was so much better than people can understand. His mind was full of so many incredible thoughts.❤❤❤❤
He's a musician's musician, a poets poet.
Forget remembering Chris for his slow songs. My God he rocked so hard. RIP
This is the SG I liked. Not the Black Hole Sun ho hum. Wasn't a Superunknown fan either actually.
I liked Superunknown, but not nearly as I loved Badmotorfinger. Definitely prefer this over Black Hole Sun, that's for gd sure.

Right?

Now I'm all sensible and bake cakes for church!
"And God so loved Soundgarden He gave them His only song."
It was genius when it still meant something. Awesome!
ChAd Infinitum what do you mean “when it still meant something”
But Chris Cornell, I find transcending.
theoneisdobley woah okay thanks
I saw Soundgarden 2010 I believe it was so awesome Chris has a amazing voice. Chris looked so good with long hair. And I didn't know he was in singles
This song was the one I first heard of Soundgarden and it will always be my favorite.
Very raw. Takes me back.Getting older sucks, but then so does the alternative. I wish time could stand still, but then would be insanity. I guess we're just passing through, raising and falling. RIP and thanks.
yeah man... gotta try not to think about it lol
Gotta listen to Soundgarden once in a while just to wake up my old suburban soul
Soundgarden were the best of the whole grunge era

demonic sweaters pearl jam for me
the only grungw grups are pear jam and soudgarden ....alice in chains is more metal and nirvana more punk rock
Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam and Soundgarden for me, I can't decide who's better
Mejdenka I could never really get into Pearl Jam, though their influence on music is undeniable. I love Alice in Chains though.
Ben Shepherd is deifinitely one of the most underrated bassists in the history of rock.
This song began from the bass riff Ben wrote, which was built on by Matt's drumming, then Kim's riffs, then Cornell's lyrics.
STOP saying "underrated"
@@CinematicMaj I do also hate it when people over use under/overrated however in this case I think it's kinda fair, like Ben shepherd is not talked about that much compared to the rest of the band dispite him being a massive part of their sound

And this had to be inspired by the opening riff in Jesus Christ, Superstar, I think. ua-cam.com/video/g-voeq7Cebo/v-deo.html

Most metal song of the grunge era. What a psychadelic video, too.
You havent listened to Beyond the Wheel?
AIC had the most metal grungr songs
The drumming is fucking awesome on this song..

Matt is a fantastic drummer, that's why.
Why have I never heard this? This is pure energy. Pure power
Banned by MTv is why. Christians were going off
This has got to be the greatest bass line and vocals in the history of rock/metal.

He was the top vocalist of the 90's
RIP
NARKISDUDE I love Chris but he is not my top singer of the 90. He is in my top 5 , hell top 3 but no the best but that is just my opinion
But we can all agree that his death was really sad and rock music lost a great musician
didn't say singer, said vocalist. in terms of vocals he was the best, vocal range, power, agility, resonance.
but go ahead i'm interested, who are your top 2?
My favorite singer of all time is Layne Staley... I even got the same tattoo that he had for remembrance.
NARKISDUDE he was not the top.. Alx rose and Dave mustane were the dominant 90s vocal forces...
Mustaine never had a powerful voice to begin with, and Rose was maybe the top in terms of success and popularity, but not pure vocal prowess
man, I miss the 90s more every day, we had everything we needed and didn't acknowledge it... miss you always Chris
