You can really feel what James went through with his mom in this song. It's so raw, not only in the lyrics but in the delivery. Really expressive and great music.
Nothing like as sad as what he went through but after I left home, my parents become hardcore fundamentalists. Our family had never been more then holiday Christians and virtual agnostics growing up so it really felt like my parents had been taken from me. They would hold 'prayer sessions' in the house where they would speak in tongues and perform 'deliverances' (lay exorcism) until 3am. This song helps me cope.
James prayed to God as a kid on behalf of his mother just a guess and the more time that passed and pain he seen his mother in and what he seen as unanswered prayers his hope waned and turned into rage and hate for his mothers God he gave up and she held fast to her faith it is sad so much emotion in his voice dude was is scared from his childhood of watching his mother die a little more everyday.. but he missed the lession his mother wanted to leave him with I feel she knew she was dying and she wanted to leave him with faith in something bigger than this world she wanted him to never feel alone that no matter what he could find hope in God?
@@harryr2431 It's all in his book, but long story short, his mom had a brain aneurysm when James was a teenager, leaving her severely disabled, and he cared for her for many years. She died 27 years later, the Tool album 10,000 Days was dedicated to her, and this song is named for her. He also named the first wine he made "Judith". Edit: his book is called A Perfect Union of Extraordinary Things, it's available in hard copy and ebook, a very interesting read.
Damn! Maynard is such a vocal monster. And watching Paz tie her hair and then pull the pick out of her mouth and hit the next bass riff without missing a beat…is marvelous! What a great band. 👍
This might be a rare 'perfect' song. The vocals, the bass, the guitars, the drums, the lyrics, the soul of the song, the passion. Everything about it and how all of these things complement each other perfectly is absolute perfection.
Likewise! From start to finish. Its tantalizing and intense (visuals are great too!)...one of those great songs that you can't help but soak in-its good energy.
I was able to talk to Paz one time and it was a highlight of life. What a beautiful woman and a truly nice soul. The way she times putting her bun up in the break of the song kills me.
“Is God willing to prevent evil, but not able? Then he is not omnipotent. Is he able, but not willing? Then he is malevolent. Is he both able and willing? Then whence cometh evil? Is he neither able nor willing? Then why call him God?” ― Epicurus
If God values human freedom above preventing evil, Then his goodness is aimed at liberty, not protection. If he allows suffering for the sake of learning, Then he is not malevolent but sees beyond the present moment. If he is both able and willing, yet does not intervene, Then perhaps he trusts in our strength to overcome evil. If he is neither able nor willing, Then perhaps the responsibility lies entirely with us
This song and '10 000 Days' are an evocative bookended peek into Keenan's relationship with his mother. He starts by excoriating her continuing faithful ways in the face of what he saw as divine betrayal. By the time of the latter song, his outlook changed considerably, even expressing a grudging respect for her toughness, tenacity and courage - qualities he noted were lacking in her fellow churchgoers.
great analysis. i think this is all unintentionally capped by pneuma. the real shame about maynard is that he still hungers for christ and god, despite his anger towards what was done to his mother. gnosticism was where he fled to, his mind too hot to abandon the truth entirely, he sought that which perverted it instead. lateralus and pneuma are his clearest voice regarding dogma, as above so below, sun becoming, you can hear faith bursting from within Maynard, his sense of what is right is too powerful for him to ever ignore. I suspect we'll one day hear his true testimony, now that that old hot brand of hatred has finally cooled.
I recall using Napster on satellite at my friend's house and it took 3 days to download Nirvana's smells like teen spirit... Lime wire was just as bad...
Loved this song since the day it came out but 13 years later I sadly came to understand exactly how Maynard was feeling when he wrote this. I cry now when I listen to this. Feb 3, 2013, my Mom was just living her life & in an instance she was struck with a catastrophic stroke that left her unable to walk, talk, but yet was fully cognizant of her condition. She was imprisoned inside herself for 7 1/2 years until she passed from COVID. The nursing home, a place she vehemently was against ever living in, wanted to treat her but she knew COVID was her ticket out and we agreed to let her go and told them not to treat her. She finally got out of her imprisonment on Oct 27, 2020. I do believe in God but I'm not gonna lie, I have a shitload of serious questions for God, should that be where I go.
I can totally relate, to watch a parent drift away while still being physically present. My mom has dementia and it breaks my heart to be with her, what hurts the most is her faith failed her. When I realized the back story of Judith I wept when it hit me. 10 years of anger translated into a 3 min song.
I can assure u God is very real. I am sorry for ur pain sadly humans learn more from sadness n pain then we ever do happiness. Most ppl starved for love n connection but pass by hundreds n thousands of ppl daily nnignore them strange creatures we r.. bow I can't say why one person ends up in a chair paralyzed the other gets to walk ect I know belief has one thing to do with it but there I'm sure r many other factors. Other talk about lessons n karmic debt from other lives or this being type of school n we enter into contracts before coming here. I have not had things easy myself but I also was laralyslzed after a "fall" so to speak.. but I believed I would walk again n I did believed God could n would heal me same w the finger they wanted to chop off still functional n the nail did grow back Dr's don't know everything. I hope she's happy where she is.. time is short n things r about to change for everyone n there will be no doubt soon if there is or isn't a God. Because scripture is coming to life n ppl will see amazing things for better or worse I pray ur on the right side of things when time comes.. believe in God God believes in you. Sacrificed a great deal for u aswell. The supernatural is around u all of the time if u jave the eyes to see n ears to hear it.. seek God while God can still be found will come a time ull pray to jave those words in front of u n they won't be fojnd.. n knowing those words ll keep u safe.. seek them while they found dear. Know them wrote them on ur heart. Store food hide it.
@gregbanks5136 I am so very sorry for the issues you are having to handle with your Mom. Dementia is so difficult to deal with because you really just never know almost minute by minute what will happen with your loved one, for you, your Mom. Will she have periods of lucidity, complete unawareness, happy, sad, confusion and will she understand any of what's going on? I watched one of my best friends lose her Mom last year to Dementia that her Mom fought for several years. I wish I had words of wisdom to help you but there aren't any and for that I'm truly sorry. Like I said in my original post, I do believe in God but he made me who I am and who I am is mad, confused & horribly guilt ridden. I pray the days you have remaining with your Mom are great days. I know that's a hard prayer request to fill, but I will pray you & your Mom gets some of those days. I want so badly for my husband to hear this song so he can try to understand what I struggle with on my Mom's sickness & passing. We're coming up on 4 years of her passing but really for me, I feel like it's been 11 1/2 years and that I lost my Mom twice. She was such a great woman, Mother, faithful wife (that my Dad did not deserve) Grammy & Great Grammy. Friend to all she met. She even allowed my sister's best friend, who had just started transitioning in the 80's (not a good time to be tans) her family kicked her out and abandoned her but yet they were devoted Christians, and my Mom just welcomed her as if she were her own child. I can't play this for my husband because he too is a very devoted Christian, and that expletive towards the beginning will silence his ears instantly and mostly likely cause stress in our marriage. He'll only hear the song, not actually listen to it but I wish he would. Also, if you haven't listened to Tool's 'Wings for Marie (part 1)' & '10,000 Days (Wings part 2)' played back to back, for me, it is as equally as powerful and moving as 'Judith' but in a whole other realm of feelings and dealing with what happened to Maynard's Mom and her death. Sorry, I know I'm rambling & if you read this, thanks for letting me vent, but what made me the maddest about my Mom's death was the fact we were kicked out of the nursing home almost 11 months before she died, so I never got to physically see her and we had to watch her die alone, through a window, as we stood outside like she was some sideshow circus freak. It was degrading, dehumanizing, and disrespectful and I'm still so f'ing mad about it.
@@AmyBerry-vt1fv Thank you. You're very sweet for your comment. I believe there is a language difference but I'm pretty sure I understood what you are saying. I do believe in God, but I've been "tested" far too many times throughout my life & frankly I'm over it. I know the saying goes, "God never gives you more than you can handle" but I really wish he'd stop having as much faith in me because I can't handle it anymore & I no longer have faith in myself. I know my Mom is rejoicing in heaven and singing all his gospel praises & songs. She loved to sing so much, especially the gospel songs by Elvis. My Mom honestly had a beautiful & angelic singing voice, so I know she's singing cause her heart was always full of songs. Good bless you on your life's adventures and I pray all good things will come your way.
Josh is such an anthemic drummer. It drives the song in a manner that puts the entire context of pain, hate, anger, and sadness in the best of way with no fancy tricks or gimmicks.
Josh Freese was on an episode of Yo Gabba Gabba showing how he can play drums one-handed while eating lunch with his other hand. Not joking! Such a badass! 🙌🏻
He loves his mother so much and has anger about her life and death! My mother had a broken body and prayed to someone that wasn't there! I can feel this song to my bones
God's there. Make no mistake about it. Rest your mother soul, and I hope that you find the comfort and strength that you need to cope with the loss from whatever resource that you need to find it from. Keep your head up brother. The bible itself even says about at one point, even christ himself asked God why did he foresaken him, and thought that God had left him. Thats life!
Credit to the videographer. He knew damn well the viewers wanted to see more of Paz, but if he filmed any more of her, people watching this video would completely forget the rest of the band even exists. She's incredible!
My current focus is on the whole, not the human candy. The effects, feel, attitude, presence, ... Bolder, finer, than a quick spurt of adequacy of videoclip. This goes beyond music; it's a capsule of what it meant.
Maynard is literally a genuine. His lyrics, his stage presence, his visions for videos. He will never be duplicated. That man has several bands with different styles and all are amazing. That’s why he takes years and years to make new music. He’s the metal version of Dr Dre ! A perfectionist
@Devin Carter If you had any clue what that term meant, youd see the irony in your comment. Hur durr long hair equals woman. Textbook strawman at the end too. Nice
@Devin Carter man shuddup, it added to the visuals to the vid, the whole point of that part was to look cool. Learn your instruments before you try to act smart homie
It's not like you killed someone, It's not like you drove a hateful spear into his side Praise the one who left you broken down and paralyzed, He did it all for you Amen, brotha.
After losing my mother to cancer and how she reconnected with God the last 2 years of her life....this song is even higher on my list of music that has meaning!!!I feel the pain he wrote this from
It is strange to me how this song still backdoor proclaiming Christ. I don’t like the message but in a way.. he still credits Christ as all powerful. It’s interesting. He’s asking questions and giving credit to Christ. Reminds me of Paul saying whether good or bad Christ name is being proclaimed. With the situation with his mom I get it, I just wonder if this isn’t her prayers for him actually working?
The scene at 1:52 cements this as maybe the quintessential rock music video. The fade of the main guitar, the sexy bassist hair knot, Maynard's silent sip of water, the piercing high riff and of course the drummer who absolutely kills it.
I like to call it the "stretch moment" in between the first chorus and second verse in rock songs. It's that moment I feel the everyone can take a moment, stretch their arms, maybe neck, limber up, and just go in on the downbeat.
I agree. This was a defining moment in a brilliant performance - frankly hard to pin one down in such an astonishing video. For me the peak of of a great song by a great band. Sad that they disbanded but it just spread the joy - Tool, Pixies,. Not sure what Billy did afterwards - seems to have slipped out iff view but essential in this band. Love Maynard as a performer, but love Paz in every way!

@@matthewcarroll5117 Maynards grandmother who was a devout follower, but died paralyzed. He's basically blaming jesus christ for how she died, because she was such a strong religious woman but died broken and sick. Chorus: "Its not like you killed someone, its not like you drove a spiteful spear into his side" Christ died on the cross, and a soldier drove a spear into his body, and the lord started bleeding water, and the soldier got scared and ran off. The song also says "even though hes the one that did this to you". I like the song, but its from the perspective of someone that doesn't completely understands God, has no faith and just mad about how his family member died. My grandmother died similar. Devout christian, still died with a series of health problems at age 52. Still I dont question christ or blame God for what happened. That is not the will of the father. Life has its problems. Aint no getting around that. Thats not the fault of God, though.
@@user-lr7lp2ol2h exactly. It's sad how often so many people want to blame God for stuff like the death of a loved one. That's not His fault. People forget that if you acknowledge the existence of God you need tk acknowledge the existence of Satan too. The Bible clearly states how Jesus came that we may have life and have it more abundantly and that Satan is the who he comes to steal, kill, and to destroy.
Love this song. David Fincher captured the essence of the entire band with an ambience for all time. Paz is a total rawk star in this video. @@edwardireson6901 to be fair OP didn't state she played the bass in the recording, but that she "commanded that bass" in the video, which is a rather different statement. I was thinking today about this video. Hence why I'm here tonight. I was asking myself "How could I record a video myself and make it look like the Judith video?" Not even the direction. Just the look of the video, like a dark 90's movie. Please someone guide me.
One of the greatest sounding records of all time in my opinion. The musicianship and production is top tier front to back. Maynard was at his peak vocally. Killer track

My mother died of a degenerative called Alzheimer's 3 months ago. Found that this song was dedicated to Maynard's Mother who died of a stroke. Nevertheless, I have been obsessed with this song for quite a long time these days. Sometimes paths are similar and some songs are especially meant for you. I love you, dear mother. It has been 7 years and she suffered a lot from this disease. I always get aggressive when Maynard takes 3:16 of high-note voice to the next level. What a song this is. I always remember my mom when I listened to Judith. Thank you Perfect Circle for this great song .Always a admire of this song.

I love Maynard and everything he does. His voice is magic and all of his band musicians are absolutely mad talented. His music never gets old to me either. Fucking beautiful.
I watched the Conan O'Brien TV performance of this song and was knocked out. Someone commented they half expected Paz to tie her hair up like the official video. So here I am and yeah, that move is pure attitude. This song is so powerful. The performance is exquisitely complex yet still thrashing. Maynard's vocals are so raw and passionate. The lyrics are disarmingly direct. This has got to be considered one the best prog-metal tracks ever.
50 Yrs into this life. Pain and adaptation are a point of learning. We all must grow past it and thrive. Thank you Maynard. See you all on the other side.
This video was the first time I had ever heard of Paz. The way she just leans back and rocks that bass is amazing. I always turn up the bass volume when I play this back. Would love to see her perform with A Perfect Circle again, though it may never happen. Paz fan for life!
Just found out today that she didn't play it on the record, though. But you can tell she's a great bassist. And that hair tying move is drool-inducing.
My mother passed away a few weeks ago. Complications from Parkinson's. An awful disease. First took her motor functions. Then her mind; she didn't know who I was anymore. Lastly she couldn't swallow anymore. She went 13 days without food or water. She didn't give up, her body did. Very angry; she didn't deserve this. Taking solice that it can't hurt her anymore. Song just hits different. Hug and cherish the ones you love.
I'm so sorry to hear about your mom's passing. My mom passed away from Dementia 10 months ago. It doesn't matter how old you are...no one is ever prepared to lose a parent.

I've always related to this song... but I don't know the story behind it.

Paz single handedly caused thousands of teenage metalheads to fall in love in one move.
And I thought I was the only one.
She's so hot. Especially while she plays bass. Women who play instruments are automatically hotter just because they are talented.

Single most sexiest and powerful moment in rock history.
Dude, reality. Like it was all for me. Me alone. A moment we weren't supposed to see. But, we did. Perfect.
This might be a rare 'perfect' song. The vocals, the bass, the guitars, the drums, the lyrics, the soul of the song, the passion. Everything about it and how all of these things complement each other perfectly is absolute perfection.
I totally agree. The quality of the production is also amazing.
Likewise! From start to finish. Its tantalizing and intense (visuals are great too!)...one of those great songs that you can't help but soak in-its good energy.
So you're saying it's a perfect circle😉
So tight and well executed by everyone in the ensemble. Homogeneity.
You're much better than I am at this, Chiko!

Then why call him God?”
― Epicurus
If God values human freedom above preventing evil,
Then his goodness is aimed at liberty, not protection.
If he allows suffering for the sake of learning,
Then he is not malevolent but sees beyond the present moment.
If he is both able and willing, yet does not intervene,
Then perhaps he trusts in our strength to overcome evil.
If he is neither able nor willing,
Then perhaps the responsibility lies entirely with us
What I love about this music video is how it consistently cuts between the band members instead of just focusing mostly on the lead singer.
I was young when this dropped and decades later this is still fire
I was old when this dropped. Now decades later I am still old.
It's fire alright!!! In the very literal sense too!!
Real talk
This song and '10 000 Days' are an evocative bookended peek into Keenan's relationship with his mother. He starts by excoriating her continuing faithful ways in the face of what he saw as divine betrayal. By the time of the latter song, his outlook changed considerably, even expressing a grudging respect for her toughness, tenacity and courage - qualities he noted were lacking in her fellow churchgoers.
Thanks for this. I look out for song meanings and even meanings being a bands musical themes.
Excellent point actually. Thanks!
This mirrors my fathers story and his death. These songs hit deep for me.
lol mommy issues the band, no wonder i love them so much,.
great analysis. i think this is all unintentionally capped by pneuma. the real shame about maynard is that he still hungers for christ and god, despite his anger towards what was done to his mother. gnosticism was where he fled to, his mind too hot to abandon the truth entirely, he sought that which perverted it instead. lateralus and pneuma are his clearest voice regarding dogma, as above so below, sun becoming, you can hear faith bursting from within Maynard, his sense of what is right is too powerful for him to ever ignore. I suspect we'll one day hear his true testimony, now that that old hot brand of hatred has finally cooled.
God I wish this song was longer❤

I swear this song sounds even better with age.
He's beating that drum set like it owes him money!

Absolutely perfect. Too bad it's pure wickedness.
Mmmm. Paz. Very compelling bassist. I have always been a fan.
Just found out today that she didn't play it on the record, though. But you can tell she's a great bassist. And that hair tying move is drool-inducing.
First time I saw her put her hair up in bun during a pause in playing I knew I had to marry her
I hope so much like you about Paz's return.
I have a serious lady crush going on
When David Fincher directs your rehearsal video, it truly is A Perfect Circle.
When Paz starts singing background vocals 😍 🥰
ZERKER
Her vocals are so haunting. Such a great vibe for this song!
When Paz puts her hair up. 🥴
@@ryanmauck3020 😁🤌🏼
This song really hits home. It’s exactly how I feel about my religious sister who is in the end stages of MS.
Everything Maynard touches turns to gold.
Let’s also give Billy alot of credit though
Still listening in '21, This and more is my teenage years.
1:56 - 02 🤘
And better than anything out now
@@miseurluciferdiablo266 that bun twist was top notch, js
@@Davelon420 2:01 she took it back out of her mouth and kept right on 🎸
Same. Saw them on this tour in Nashville back in early 2001 :)
How in the fuck do I get goosebumps multiple times from a song I’ve heard a thousand times!?!
Same. I play this song a LOT. One of my favorites from A Perfect Circle.
its that god damned good!!!
funny i answered what i did and someone else almost came up with same reply a month before me but mine was more fitting😈
because the song is just that damn good
Same
Pretty crazy how something as simple as Paz putting her hair up in a bun made such an impact on this video. Perfection.
Today 20 years of Mer De Noms. Amazing album through this time.
This is an amazing song
still one of the best songs to come out in past 20 years!
😢
Very sorry to hear about your mother. With advanced Parkinson's, this isn't how any of us want to go.
😢
I'm so sorry to hear about your mom's passing. My mom passed away from Dementia 10 months ago. It doesn't matter how old you are...no one is ever prepared to lose a parent.
Still… one of the best produced music videos to this day. Thank you so much, David Fincher..
I had to look this up so I could call you a downright liar and… you’re NOT a downright liar wtaf!
When Paz ties her hair and doesn't miss a lick on her bass is badass Maynard you know how to pick them you are the master
It’s actually edited for the video... Paz tried to do it in real time, but she wasn’t quick enough, so they sped up the footage
ofc it was maynard
