God, I miss Chris Cornell. That man's voice was a gift for all who would listen.
No kidding, unfortunately I was distracted from the whole grunge thing as a teenager but Chris and Kurt had one-of-a-kind, badass voices.
Man 😔 unreplaceable.
No matter the genre, the 90's had so much great music.
true that
Second that
90s had some unbearable pain in the ass POP tho
Yesssssssss
but the time was very problematic
"I'm looking California and feeling Minnesota." Timeless lyric. I'm so glad to have grown up during this era!
Soundgarden sneaking in the wicked burn for the win.
@@Boo-Stein I thought it was about the weather
What does it mean?
@@rudyallen4 I think it means he was looking good but feeling lousy. Analogy based off of the different types of weather. At least that’s my guess.
@@Boo-Stein There was a famous recording studio in Minnesota that handled some of the biggest grunge bands of the day. It was where Nirvana recorded their last album. The industry was abusive to these artists. I think it's a slight to the big labels picking up bands like Nirvana and Pearl Jam while leaving Soundgarden behind, they're feeling "outshined."
Kim Thayil is hands down one of the most underrated guitarist ever.
I agree 👍..
Right next to Steve Vai…
Finally , someone else has an ear ...yes he is a great guitarist ..

If he did this knowing he has CHILDREN who love and need him, he was a selfish bitch. Before anyone comments, you would know that, if you are a decent person, you would NEVER inflict that kind of pain on your own children!!
As if you know anything about what Chris was going through.
Layne Staley and Chris Cornell. The vocal gods of grunge.
You say the right man
Yep.
For sure! I always loved Kurt’s voice as well because it fits so well with this type of music, Eddie Vedder not so much…
X ever and ever!
Also can't forget about Scott Weiland
This is the best Soundgarden song for me, Chris Cornell is irreplaceable may his soul be at peace.
I agree with you. this song is the best.

Too many awesome songs to pick a favorite or best. I'd have go with Pretty Noose purely for the lyrics.

Listen Ritchie Kotzen kinda similar voice
As a child of the 60’s, growing up with Hendrix, Beatles, Zeppelin, Cream, etc., Soundgarden in my opinion was one of the few bands that sounded unique and had depth to their music. Really great.
I am!
Chris Cornell had the BEST VOICE in Rock Music!!! No one will ever sing like him anymore!!! RIP Chris!!!
I whole heatedly agree. AIC also.
Wow.. not a rockstar..a drug lord xxoo from the next week 😉 fan club Empress Kathy Kane
Nirvana and Pearl Jam stole most of the shine from the Seattle area but Chris was gonna prevail no matter what... But then he somehow hooked up with some incredible musicians and proceeded to outshine everyone, this song was Chris really telling us he would never be outshinec.
These guys are more metal than most metal bands.
They are a metal/grunge band lol
Nah this is pretty straight rock and tool tbh I don’t care for grunge punk all that crap this is just good old rock and roll. Nothing near Slipknot Crowbar LOg or even Metallica
Absolutely, Soundgarden and Alice in Chains were both heavier than most "hair metal" bands.
They were definitely heavier earlier on and you could hear a metal sound influenced tinge to their music. Superunknown was more grunge inspired.
I wouldn't go that far. True Metal bands are much heavier or extreme than this...
90-95 Was so rich in great music
damn right!
Marc Bolinger 👍🏽digging the shirt!
Cheapo shit if you were born in the early eighties.
81-89 was even better.
80's were much better than the 90's.
RIP Chris!!! You'll always outshine the rest of em.
Except Eddie, He's still alive.
Even though Vedder had his problems, he played it "safe" compared to Layne, Weiland and Kurt in terms of addiction and messing up your body. Chris had his problems, but he became a born again christian, but he never could let go of the demons in his life.
You wouldn't say that to his face Jesse lol
Why? What would Eddie do, throw a flower or some granola at him? Vedder is an angst ridden uber-liberal.
Tootsie Roll What makes YOU such an expert on Eddie Vedder??? He is the only one left of the three. Maybe the burden of that has not hit his soul yet. When it does, there will be more glory then the world can contain.
A timeless rock Song. Everthing is great. Voice, guitars, light,.... Millions of thanks for It.
The 1990's:
The last decade of talent, musicianship, and creativity.
The last decade that had something to say.
The last decade to change the landscape of pop culture.
I turned 50 this year and I wholeheartedly believe that we'll never see another artistic Renaissance quite like this decade.
Don't know what you got till it's gone.
Very true though
I like both Cinderella and Soundgarden.

This is hands down the greatest snare tone I have ever heard. Matt Cameron is a genious.
That’s Terry Dates doing... not Matt Cameron’s
He did Panteras records and the drum sounds are good.
Listen to Applebite off of Down on the upside. It has even better snare tone.
You know it's the PRODUCER that get the sounds and tones, right?
Yes, of course, each individual musician comes into the studio having tweaked their instrument to its best sound and tone ambiently, but then it's up to the producer (in this case, Terry Gates) to transfer that live sound onto a recording, and that's a whole 'nother process. If you like the tone, it's a combination of Matt and Terry, not Matt alone. If you like the "drumming" - then that's all Matt.
This is the 90s yall feel it
One the very best 🤘🏾👊🏾✊🏾
That's gotta be one of the most badass riffs out there.
100% agreed. Chris' singing, the amazing, drumwork, and that damn guitar riff. All so great.

RIP Legend
In the middle of the summer of 1998, early August, just a little over 18, I felt so lonely and depressed. At night I would lie down on the floor of the roof of my grandparents' house, in Vieste, Puglia, and stare at the sky and see NATO planes going back and forth from Italy to the Balkans in the last years of the conflict. I had a Walkman and an audio tape that I had never listened to, on which A-Side was recorded, dubbed from a Neapolitan friend's CD before leaving for the summer holidays. I only knew Nirvana, while Soundgarden I only knew for the Black Hole Sun video, which was the reason why I made a copy of their cd. So, at night when I looked up at the sky, I fell in love with the instrumental interlude of Outshined, or the infinite sadness of The day I Try to live, or Blow up the outside world, the anger of Ty Cobb or Bleed Together, or the desolation of Fell on the black days, or the banjo guitars of Burden in my Hand or Spoonman's spoons, or Rusty Cage's guitar riff. I did not understand anything about the lyrics because I could not speak and write in English (and as you can see even today I am not able to) .... but today every time I think about Soundgarden I remember the summer of 1998, how suddenly I felt inexplicably fragile, and how much this feeling has never left me even today. So I would like to dedicate these few lines to all those who in their life were and are looking California and feeling Minnesota. Thank you so much Chris wherever you are now.

One of the greatest rock singers of our time. RIP Chris. 😭
Of all time.*
Great Lyrics. Cornell is a poet.
AGREED!
Exactly, that's what I said when I really listened to his words - I was HOOKED. Haha, and I mean, I'm from the HOOD, you know, I listened to Tupac.. D.O.C, Ice Cube, etc (but then again, as a 6th grader, I was a TRUE weirdo in that while everyone around me was digging L.L. Cool J, I was listening to Iron Maiden, haha). But hearing Cornell changed all that. When hip-hop died, I found something better in bands like Soundgarden. They're hardcore and their front man is a frickin GENIUS. By the time of "SuperUnknown" and "Down on the Upside", Chris Cornell had basically taken over ALL the writing, not just the lyrics but the music parts, too, and the music began having more subtlety, nuance. Those two albums are my favorites, especially the last, but I love the rawer old stuff like "Jesus Christ Pose" and "Flower". He's a poet. It took me a minute to adjust when I first heard his solo "Euphoria Morning", but it started making sense after awhile, as it's pure Cornell. With Audioslave I was super-excited. Now I don't know. I saw him live a couple years ago and he did a lot of old stuff plus some covers (from Mother Lovebone, Marley, and Floyd), but I was really hoping he would introduce new material, some sign of a new album (and NOTHING like that pitiful shit he did with Timbaland, gawd). Watching him live, it's like he expends SO little energy when he wails. He's also cool in that he's so down to earth and relatable, humble. I was surprised he was so frickin TALL, man - he was easily like 6'4" or more. I'm 6'1" and I felt short next to him. Back then, he'd grown his hair back out and even had a beard, looked like Jesus, haha - and that was on Easter, actually, and he said something funny about that. Anyway, I'm a HUGE fan, PURELY because of this dude's poeticism.
7 years... i can't believe how much time has flown through my hands like water, nor how Chris is gone. Rest in power, we miss you.
That's why "Right Turn" by Alice in Chains is so amazing. Layne and Chris singing together in a song is absolutely amazing

Soundgarden fans are pretty cool. Same goes for the band. Their music probably inspires this. Back in the Seattle days they helped out other bands and jammed with them rather than pointlessly squabbling, as they realised that we're all in the small shitty boat together, and you can either get along and make the best of it or fight amongst yourselves and watch it all sink. There's probably a moral for our turbulent times in there somewhere. Thanks for taking us along for the ride, dudes.

Always been a fan of Nirvana and Alice in chains but there's honestly just something to soundgarden and Cornell that scratches a different itch when listening. How they alternate from the thumping heavy chords of the beginning to more melodic and fast paced strings during the pre-chorus going as far as to kind of mix the two during the chorus. Man it's experimental shit like this that I miss, the kind where typically it wouldn't work but when arranged JUST so brings about a new sound.

SoundGarden is one of those bands that with RARELY exceptions ALL the members are top level musicians, just like the Beatles or PinkFloyd, where all the members were talented and multifaceted.
The bassist (Ben Shepherd) is a monster, the drummer (Matt Cameron) is a killer, the guitarist (Kim Thayil) is breathtaking in the tuning and complexity of the riffs, and Cornell sings like a God of Olympus, as well as playing very well, it's a band that has everything in terms of music, composition, chords, sonority, it's like a classical music show where the Maestro is rock n roll.
